I'm going to regret this, I can tell...

This is the Harry Potter crossover which I had to stop posting abruptly way back in 2006, when I left the CBB for complicated reasons and didn't come back for three years.

The first two parts are in the archive: here and here . Alternatively, if you PM me your email address, I will send you the first seven chapters without yibble.

Most of Chapter 8 is in the Part II of the archive, but the end was eaten by the Evil Hacker (TM), so I'm re-posting from the beginning of Chapter 8. I know the whole story, but I've only actually written up to Chapter 10, so this could be interesting.

Chapter 8: The Hogwarts Express

Half past eight the following morning saw their tame cab driver unloading Joanna's trunk and Malkin's basket onto a luggage trolley.

"There you go," he said. "You coming home for Christmas? You are? Excellent, I'll see you then. And I'll listen out for the name Entwistle in the meantime!" And with that, he slapped her on the back - harder than he meant to: Joanna almost stumbled - and vanished into the crowd.

"I've never been to King's Cross on Hogwarts Express day," said Mary-Lou distractedly. "Stay close to me, both of you. I don't want to lose us."

The area around platforms nine and ten was full of an unlikely assortment of obvious witches and wizards, confused-looking Muggles and a vast number of assorted children and young people, all apparently shouting at the tops of their voices. Mary-Lou looked round at them all, then took the trolley handles from Joanna and steered a path to the barrier between the platforms. Joanna used her eyes, as usual, and saw someone leaning apparently casually against barrier. The next moment, he had vanished.

"How does it work, Mary-Lou?" she asked. "It can't be a very complicated spell, or Muggle-born children who don't have witches to show them the way wouldn't know what to do."

"What?" said Mary-Lou distractedly. "O, sorry, Jojo. The magic's in the barrier; all you have to do is push through it."

"Then what happens when Muggles without wizarding relatives lean against it?" asked Joanna anxiously. "They're bound so sometimes, you know."

"Yes, I suppose so," said Mary-Lou. "Do you know, I never thought of that. Were you always top of your form at the Chalet?" she asked, apparently irrelevantly. Joanna looked shocked.

"Mamma would have had something to say if I hadn't been!" she exclaimed. "Charlie and Grace are always top too, but Jackie isn't."

"And does Mamma say things to him?"

"No, because Jackie is more practical," said Joanna. "He likes woodwork and knitting. Last term, he was fifth in his form, and Mamma said he'd done really well."

Mary-Lou was saved from having to respond to this by the fact that they had reached the barrier. She nodded for Joanna to go first.

Joanna glanced back at Grandmamma, hovering anxiously at
Mary-Lou's shoulder, took a deep breath and then pushed through the barrier between platforms nine and ten, onto platform nine and three-quarters and into the wizarding world.

Thanks! Hope you carry on enjoying it.

Joanna blinked as she looked round. There was a bright green steam engine, with - she counted quickly - twenty carriages behind it, hissing at the edge of the platform. There was nearly as much confusion here as the had been on the other side of the barrier, except that the majority of the people here were clearly wizards, or schoolchildren, or both.

Her eyes were drawn to a family, all of whom had hair as red as her own. There was a boy of Joanna's age, one a little older, and a toddler who was tugging at his mother's skirt. She was bending over the double pushchair and appeared to be scolding the occupants hard. Joanna involuntarily edged a little closer.

" ...behave yourselves for five minutes!" finished their mother, shaking her finger at the twins.

"Mu-um!" whined the toddler urgently.

"Yes, all right, Percy, I'm coming," said his mother distractedly. "Bill and Charlie, wait here for Dad - we'll only be a few minutes - and keep an eye on Freddie and Georgie." She was obviously reluctant to leave the twins - Joanna, who was very much accustomed to babies, reckoned they were about seventeen months old - but Percy was now pulling so hard she had no choice other than to follow.

Two small pairs of brown eyes followed her carefully, unaware that a single of pair of green eyes was watching them just as closely - Joanna was used to Terrible Twins, as well as to babies in general.

So when there was a loud crack! and Charlie and Bill Weasley looked round, horrified, to see that their baby brothers had Vanished the safety straps on their pushchair and were rapidly crawling in opposite directions down the platform - crawling as rapidly, that is, as only young wizards with little respect for authority can - they were surprised and gratified when a small red-headed witch ran past them, shouting at the top of her voice,

"Go after Freddie! I'll head off Georgie!"

Post subject:  Re: Joanna Creates a Sensation - updated 20 Mar

I'm trying to get through chapter 8 so that I can move onto stuff that isn't in the archive.

Incidentally, I have fiddled about with people's ages. This is theoretically set in about 1980, because the triplets' age is fixed. This means that some of JKR's characters (notably the Weasleys) are a few years older than they "should" be, and some of EBD's are a bit younger. Both EBD and JKR changed ages when it suited them: I suppose the difference is that I'm up front about it, and also that I'm messing about in their worlds, not my own creation.

Ten minutes later, the Terrible Twins were restored to their pushchair, firmly strapped in once more and each, in addition, being grasped by an elder brother.

"Thanks," said the bigger boy, looking somewhat embarrassed. "I'm Bill Weasley. This is Charlie."

"How did you know what our twins are called?" asked Charlie, hopping on one foot (without letting go of Freddie's shoulder). "And how do you know which is which?"

"Yes, we've had them for nearly a year and a half, and only Mum can tell them apart," said Bill with a touch of indignation.

"I'm Joanna Entwistle," said Joanna. "I'm Muggle-born so I don't know anyone here, but I do know all about Terrible Twins. You have to watch them all the time, or you'll never keep ahead; and when you have lots of twins, you soon get used to telling them apart!"

"Do you have Terrible Twins in your family, too?" asked Charlie.

"Yes, and yours look nearly as naughty as Jemmy and Dickon," said Joanna with feeling. "And of course they're wizards too, which makes it even worse."

"Tell us how to tell them apart, then," said Bill.

"O, that's easy," said Joanna. "Freddie's left ear is a tiny bit lower than the right, you see? And Georgie's nose is a shade bigger, and he has a useful extra patch of freckles high on his right cheek, see?" Their brothers stared at Freddie and Georgie in silence for some minutes, and the twins glared back.

"Well, I can see it now," said Bill at last. "But I wouldn't have known if you hadn't pointed it out, and that doesn't help with telling them apart at a distance."

"But that's easy too," said Joanna. "Freddie's right-handed and Georgie's left-handed, which makes a small difference to the way they move. And Georgie's going to be a bit taller."

"So how do you tell which is which, at a distance, when you can only see one of them?" said Bill slowly.

"That's the hardest of all," admitted Joanna. "The right-and left-handedness helps - Dad says that's one of the best design features of twins, that one is always right-handed and the other is always left-handed; he says it makes life marginally less impossible for families that can't get away from twins - but really, you just need to get to know them. That's the only way any of us at home manage with ours."

"How old are your twins?" asked Charlie, who was still regarding Joanna with awe.

"They're six," said Joanna. "But we have two-year-old quads, too, and they are two sets of identical twins. Phoebe and Laina are identical, and so are Rafe and Robbie."

Bill looked at her compassionately.

"I thought I was badly off with four little brothers," he said. "But you've got six younger than you! And you're only eleven."

"No, I've got nine younger brothers and sisters," said Joanna with some satisfaction. "Though my twin's only half an hour younger."

"Are you a Terrible Twin, too?" asked Charlie.

"Where's your sister?" asked Bill, looking round the platform.

"No-o," said Joanna reluctantly. "Jackie's a boy, and he hasn't got red hair, and he's a Muggle."

Bill and Charlie looked serious.

"I've never heard of that happening before," said Bill. "Not with twins."

Sorry for spreeing, but I want to get the rest of what's in the archive posted so I can start on new stuff. This is the last of what's already in the archive: the next post will be the end of Chapter 8.

Joanna was saved from having to answer by the arrival of a tall, thin red-haired man who could only be Mr. Weasley. Joanna was surprised to see that he was closely followed by Mary-Lou and Grandmamma.

"There you are, boys!" said Mr. Weasley heartily. "This is Madam Trelawney. Very unusual case - told you about her the other week -"

"Arthur!" said a voice from just behind him, and Mr. Weasley stopped in obvious confusion. Mrs. Weasley had just returned, with three-year-old Percy in tow. She glared at Mr. Weasley, then turned to Mary-Lou.

"Hello, Madam Trelawney," she said graciously. "We have met. Arthur told me you were bringing a young relative to Hogwarts."

Joanna looked at Mary-Lou curiously.

"Yes, this is Joanna," said Mary-Lou. "She's a kind of adopted cousin. She doesn't know anything at all about the wizarding world - the first she knew was when the owl post arrived."

"Well, you won't be the only one," said Mrs. Weasley encouragingly to Joanna. "And you're lucky - you had Madam Trelawney to show you round Diagon Alley. Most people have to make do with a guide from the Leaky Cauldron."

"Chin up, Joanna," said Grandmamma heartily. "Chalet School girls always meet new adventures bravely."

"Are you from the Chalet School?" said Mr. Weasley eagerly, looking at Joanna with even more interest.

"Of course she is, Arthur, don't be silly -" began Mrs. Weasley. At that moment, the train let out a piercing whistle. Mrs. Weasley grabbed her two eldest sons and began to issue last-minute instructions in a rapid staccato. Mary-Lou and Grandmamma both put their arms round Joanna and drew her to one side.

"Try not to worry, Jojo," said Grandmamma. Joanna was surprised and pleased - Grandmamma rarely abbreviated her name. "There will be news from Mamma soon, and I'll send you an Owl as soon as there's anything to tell you." (Joey Maynard had, of course, stayed awake nearly all night reading the books Madam Blott had supplied for the education of ignorant Muggle relatives, so she knew all about communication in the wizarding world.)

"Thank you, Grandmamma," said Joanna in a small voice. "I know Dad and the other doctors will look after her, but I still don't understand why she's poorly now, when she never has been before."

"None of us are sure why that should be, Joanna, but you know we'll all look after your Mamma for you, don't you?" said Grandmamma. Joanna gulped.

"Will you look after the quads too, Grandmamma?" she asked. "I know you think Marya and Roosje can look after them, and they can, of course, but they'll be so lonely at the moment. Dickon and Jemmy start at St. Nick's tomorrow."

"I admit I find it hard to understand how they can be lonely when there are four of them, and they are only two years old," said Grandmamma, with a small sigh. "But I suppose you know your family better than I do. I'll go and see the quads when I get home this evening."

"Oh, thank you, Grandmamma!!" beamed Joanna. She stood on tiptoe to kiss Grandmamma's cheek, then turned to Mary-Lou.

"Now, try not to worry about anything, Jojo," said Mary-Lou. "You won't be the only Muggle-born in your year, and all the professors will be ready to answer your questions. And I'm sure you'll make some friends soon - you are a Chalet School girl, after all!"

"Yes, don't forget the Chalet School, Joanna," said Grandmamma - as if she could! "Remember, you're an ambassador. It's up to you to show your new school what Chalet School girls are like."

And here is the end of Chapter 8, the first bit that isn't in the archive.

The engine whistled piercingly again. All the way down the train, children were being bundled into compartments by anxious parents. Joanna found herself being pushed through a door after the two Weasley boys.

"Madam Trelawney put your trunk in here, with Bill and Charlie's," said Mr. Weasley, patting her on the shoulder.

"Now, boys, be good," said Mrs. Weasley. "Charlie, remember what I told you."

"Jojo, send me an Owl if you need anything," shouted Mary-Lou.

"Send an Owl when you get to school," yelled Grandmamma. "Write to your Mamma and Papa every week."

The guard wizard strode down the platform, slamming all the doors shut and glaring at parents and guardians who failed to get out of the way in time. The train began to puff frantically. Bill, Charlie and Joanna crowded together at the window and waved as the train began to move away. Then they all sat down and looked at each other, suddenly shy.

The door onto the corridor opened and a small, pretty, slightly plump blonde witch slid into their compartment. Joanna opened her mouth to say hello, but Charlie was before her. Glaring fiercely at the girl, he said,

"Go away, Nemesis. We don't want you."

Chapter 9: Nemesis!

The girl called Nemesis glared back at Charlie.

"You have to be nice to me, Charlie Weasley! Or my mum will tell yours!"

"I don't care," said Charlie furiously. "I won't be friends with you. I don't want to be. I can make my own friends. Go away, Nemesis."

"Won't." said Nemesis.

"Will," said Charlie.

"Won't."

"Will."

"Wont, won't, won't!"

"Will, will, will!"

They were glaring at each other so hard that Joanna was sure she could see sparks jumping in the air between them.

"Anyway," said Charlie at last, sitting back heavily, "you'll have to leave me alone at school, 'cause Weasleys are always Gryffindors and Smiths are always Slytherins."

"Dad's cousin was a Hufflepuff, so there," said Nemesis. "An' there's always a first time. I'm going to be in Gryffindor. You watch." And she flounced out of the compartment, slamming the door so hard that Joanna was afraid the glass would crack. The door slid open again, and Nemesis put her head back into the compartment to stare hostilely at Joanna and say, "And who are you? I know you're not a Weasley, although your hair's red enough."

"I'm Joanna Entwistle," said that young lady pleasantly - Charlie's quarrel was nothing to do with her. "I'm Muggle-born, but Mr. Weasley knows my sort-of cousin Mary-Lou Trelawney. Pleased to meet you -"

"Well, I'm Nemesis Smith, and I'm not pleased to meet you!" said Nemesis. "My mum says the Trelawney woman should be in Azkaban -"

"Wash your mouth out!" cried Bill furiously. He had been quiet until now - obviously Charlie's quarrel had nothing to do with him, either.
"Apologise at once, Nemesis, or I'll tell a prefect!"

Nemesis stuck her tongue out at Bill and slammed the door again, and this time the glass did crack. Bill took out his wand and tapped the glass, muttering "Reparo," under his breath. The glass was mended instantly, and Joanna made a mental note of what looked like a useful spell.

"Sorry about that," said Charlie bashfully.

"You are an idiot, Charlie," said his elder brother.

"It's all right for you," said Charlie. He turned to Joanna. "Nemesis's Dad works in the Ministry, not far from our Dad. They get on really well together, and Mum and Mrs. Smith get on well, so they think Nemesis and I should be friends too."

"And poor Charlie can't stand her," said Bill with mock sympathy.

"She's such a girlie girl!" said Charlie disgustedly. "She's always wanting me to help change the colour of her dollies' eyes, or make their hair grow, or something stupid like that." He looked at Joanna. "You don't play with dollies, do you?"

"I never had dollies," said Joanna. "I had a family of bears, and I used to make Jackie play school with them." Charlie looked relieved.

"That's all right, then," he said.

"So what are all your brothers and sisters called, and how old are they?" asked Bill. Joanna took a deep breath.

"Jackie my twin is eleven like me, and Charlie comes next and he's ten. Grace is eight and a half, and Jemmy and Dickon are twins and just six. They're the Terrible Twins, and they really are awful," she added in parentheses. "They're the first identical twins in the family, which is quite impressive considering how many twins there are. Then we've got quads - the first quads in the family, too, though Grandmamma always wanted quads - and they're two and a half. And they are two sets of identical twins - Robbie and Rafe are identical, and so are Phoebe and Laina."

"How could your gran possibly want to have quads?" asked Bill. "Mum says twins are much, much worse than just having one baby at a time, even if they weren't as Terrible as ours." Joanna blushed.

"I'm afraid we've always had paid help at home," she said, very embarrassed. Charlie stared at her.

"You mean servants?" said Bill. He turned to Charlie "Muggles don't have house-elves, so if they're rich they pay other Muggles to do the cooking and cleaning and stuff." Charlie's face cleared as if this made perfect sense. Joanna stored the information about house-elves away for later reference, and hastened to explain about Marya and Roosje, and Anna and Rosa at Grandmamma's.

"We don't think of them as servants," she said. "They work for us, but they're more like the domestic staff at school. If we didn't have them, Mamma wouldn't be able to work and Grandmamma wouldn't have been able to, either."

"Oh, if your mum works that does make a difference," said Bill. "But you still haven't said why your Gran wanted quads. Even if she didn't have to look after them all by herself, it was still a lot of extra work."

"Yes, but Grandmamma started with triplets, and quads wouldn't have been much worse," said Joanna earnestly. Bill and Charlie looked at each other.

"Are all Muggle families like that?" Charlie asked Bill.

"No, only mine," Joanna told him. "My family is unique," she said proudly, but then (being Helen Entwistle's daughter) had to add honestly, "I think that's probably a good thing."

Glad you're all enjoying this. Just a shortish bit today.

"So how many aunts and uncles do you have?" asked Charlie. "We've got two uncles - mum's brothers - but neither of them is married, so we haven't any cousins."

"I've got lots of cousins," said Joanna proudly. "My Grandmamma had seventeen children."

Bill and Charlie's eyes practically popped out.

"Is that - possible?" asked Bill delicately. Joanna smiled at his confusion for a few seconds, and then relented.

"My Mamma and her trips came first - triplets," she expanded, taking pity on their confusion. "Then three singletons, then twins, then another singleton, then more twins. And the other six were adopted, though four of them were distant relatives anyway."

"So how many cousins have you got?" asked Charlie, who was utterly fascinated.

"I have no idea," said Joanna honestly. "Not from the top of my head. I could work it out. But there are all the second cousins, too - I mean, my Mamma's cousins' children. She had thirteen first cousins, and most of them have children."

"And you're the first witch in your whole family?” asked Bill.

"As far as we know," said Joanna. "But they can't always tell, can they?"

"Usually they can," said Bill.

"But they didn't with Mary-Lou."

“Ah,” said Bill dryly. “But then, there is only one Mary-Lou Trelawney.”

"So what relation is she to you?" asked Charlie eagerly.

"She isn't really," said Joanna thoughtfully. "She was at school with Mamma and her trips - she was a few years older than them - and she's a friend of Grandmamma's too, has been since she was at school. And she doesn't have much family of her own - only two sisters and one brother - so she's always thought of us as her family, too." She took a deep breath. "So why is everyone afraid of Mary-Lou?" she asked. "She said she would tell me, but she hasn't yet. There hasn't really been time," she added fairly.

Bill and Charlie looked at each other for a moment. Then Bill shrugged, turned to Joanna and opened his mouth.

Er - I may be a little bit evil. Sorry.

Just then, the door of their compartment opened and in came a short witch who appeared about sixteen, already wearing her school robes and with a "P" badge (presumably for prefect, thought Joanna, who knew all about prefects) pinned to the left hand side.

"Any first-years in here?" she asked. Her gaze fell on Joanna and Charlie and she grinned broadly. "Two redheads! What fun. You must be a Weasley," she said to Charlie.

"Yes, this is Charlie," said Bill, seeing that Charlie was apparently too scared to speak.

"And I'm Joanna Entwistle," said that young lady, who, whatever other faults she might have, had been brought up to be impeccably polite.

"Entwistle?" said the prefect thoughtfully.

"I'm Muggle-born," explained Joanna.

"But she knows Madam Trelawney!" said Bill eagerly. "She saw her onto the school train and everything."

"Then you must know a little bit about Hogwarts," said the prefect, with a reassuring smile at Joanna.

"Yes, a bit, although I'm sure there's a lot to learn," said Joanna. "But I have been at boarding school for five years."

"What, since you were six?” gasped the prefect. She visibly pulled herself together. “I’m sure you’ll be fine, then. I'm Fernanda Flitwick, by the way, and I'm a prefect in Gryffindor house. Bill's in Gryffindor," she smiled at Bill, whose eyes popped slightly, "so we're both prejudiced, but it is the best house."

"How many houses are there?" asked Joanna.

"Four - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin," said Fernanda. "But I must be off - Bill, be a good chap and answer any questions Joanna's got." And she flashed a smile at all three of them and quickly left the compartment, her robes swirling round her as she turned.

Bill blushed violently. Joanna looked at him curiously.

"Is Fernanda a friend of yours?" she asked innocently. Bill gulped.

“I wish!" he said. "She's a sixth year - prefect - I didn't even know she knew my name!" He looked dreamily after her for a few seconds, then seemed to pull himself together and turned to Joanna. "Well then, any questions?" he asked. "We've quizzed you about your family, but Mum, Dad, Madam Trelawney and Fernanda all said I should help you out, so what do you want to know?"

I'm afraid you'll have to wait a bit to hear aboput Mary-Lou.

Joanna took a deep breath. She had lots of questions! She began to fire them at Bill, nodding briefly at each answer then moving on quickly to the next question.

"Do we need to change into school uniform before we get there?"

"Yes, but there's no great hurry. Charlie an' I'll stand in the corridor while you change, and then you can while we change."

"How many dormitories are there in each house?"

"Fourteen, girls' and boys' for every year."

The next question seemed to confuse Bill.

"Are we allowed to have warm baths in the morning?"

"Er... yes..."

"What are the mistresses and masters like? Teachers, then!" impatiently, as Bill looked even more confused.

"We call them professors. They're all different. Some of them are really strict, but some are good fun. Professor Binns, the History of Magic professor, is really, really boring - everyone goes to sleep in his lessons."

"I shan't," said Joanna. "I like history."

"You'll be the first ever if you don't, then," said Bill. To be fair to him, he had known Joanna less than two hours, and did not yet know that making a statement like that was tantamount to issuing a direct challenge. So he didn't understand the sudden gleam in Joanna's eyes, and did not realise his mistake.

"Is it really hard to find your way around Hogwarts?" was the next question.

"Yes, but everyone helps first years, so you'll be ok."

"What games do you play?"

At this, Bill's face involuntarily fell into a broad grin.

"Quidditch," he said.

Oh dear, more RL got in the way I'm afraid (although this has been a lovely weekend). I have another busy week ahead. but then I'm going away at the weekend, and I hope there will be a bit more sanity after that!

Here is the end of Chapter 9.

Just at that moment, a tall, thin, dark-haired prefect stuck his head round the door of their compartment.

"Not changed yet?" he asked. "We're ten minutes away from Hogsmeade."

Bill jumped up and hustled Charlie out of the compartment. Joanna - secretly very glad that Mary-Lou had found time to give her a quick lesson in putting on her robes - dressed at top speed and then slid out into the corridor to give the Weasleys a chance to change.

"Ok?" said Bill, sliding open the door to let her back in. "Bring your cat, but leave your trunk - they get taken up to the castle for us."

Joanna was extremely relived to hear this. She picked up Malkin's basket - to her relief, the kitten had slept for the whole journey, and hardly cried at all.

With a lot of screeching and whistling, the train slowed down and drew into the station. The prefects jumped out straight away, and kept an eye on their juniors. Joanna and the Weasleys' compartment was at the end of the carriage, so Joanna had plenty of time to look out of the window. She thought she caught sight of an impossibly tall man shouting,

"First years, follow me! Over year! This way, first years!"

As they came closer to the carriage door, Joanna saw that Nemesis was just in front of her. The nearest prefect, who of course had no idea, saw two very small first year girls and directed them both to the front of the queue. Joanna stepped back politely to allow Nemesis to go first, and was deeply shocked to find herself very firmly, and deliberately, tripped up.

I'm afraid that before we see how Joanna copes with Nemesis and settles into Hogwarts, we are taking a fleeting visit back to the Platz to see Helen and Reg. I do hope no-one is too disappointed....

Chapter Ten: The Chalet School

Helen and Reg Entwistle proudly regarded the three cots that stood in a row down the side of Helen's bed.

"Well, you've done it this time," said Reg.

"Done what?" said Helen (who knew perfectly well what he meant) indignantly.

"Beaten your Ma," said Reg deliberately.

"Reginald Entwistle -" began his wife with dignity.

"Oh, don't pretend, Helena," said the taller of the two white-haired ladies who had predictably been the first to take advantage of the fact that Helen was allowed non-Family visitors now that the triplets were three days old, and she herself was out of danger.

"You always were the most competitive of Joey's children," agreed her companion. "You’re just good at hiding it." Helen glared at them both, but was saved from making a reply by the arrival of their successors, the Head and Deputy Head of the Chalet School.

"Oh, good," said the shorter of the two white-haired ladies. "Now you can save your breath by telling us all what they're called."

"And then Nell and I will depart and leave all you youngsters to entertain one other," added her companion.

"Don't be silly," said Reg. "You must know that they are called Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen."

"No, I know Helen has more sense than that," said Nell. "Come on. Spill."

"Yes, if for no other reason than that Nancy and I will be slaughtered if we have to tell them at school that you wouldn't reveal," said the Deputy Head plaintively.

Helen and Reg regarded each other with mischievous eyes. Then Helen relented.

"We thought we were having twins again, so we had the names Megan and Mary all ready for them," she said.

"But we couldn't think of a single other decent name beginning with M," said Reg, breaking off to glare at Nell and Hilda, who were giggling at each other for some inexplicable reason. He resumed with dignity, "Not that it matters so very much, but we thought it might be odd for them if two of them had an initial in common and the other didn't."

"So, since Mamma started her family with triplets and gave us all Mary as a first name, and we have finished our family with triplets, we decided to give them all Mary as a second name," said Helen.

"Very nice, too," said Nell approvingly.

"So what horrors have you thought up for their first names?" asked Nancy. "Do you know, we have a Kylie, a Tracey and three Sharons in the Junior school this year?"

"Eleven will be Megan, because we had that name already," said Reg.

"Twelve will be Phyllis, which is after Pippa but with a twist," said Helen.

"And Thirteen'll be Anne. We haven't decided yet, but we'll probably call her Nancy - saving your presence," finished Reg, with a bow to Nancy Wilmott.

"And who is little Anne named after?" enquired Hilda, with an indescribably expression.

"Well, there are any number of Annes in the extended family," said Helen. "But mostly she's named after herself."

"Yes, we had reasons for choosing all the other names, so we thought we'd please ourselves with our lucky thirteenth," said Reg.

Somewhat to their surprise, all four of their visitors beamed at Helen and Reg. Then Hilda jerked her head at Nell, who slowly inched herself to her feet, equally slowly grasped the handles of Hilda's chair, and began to wheel her to the corridor. Everyone in the room knew better than to offer assistance, though Reg was brave enough the hold the door open for them.

He watched them process down the corridor to the lift, then came back in to find that Kathie was curled up in a heap on the end of Helen's bed cradling little Phyllis, Nancy had possessed herself of the armchair and Megan, and Helen was nursing Anne. He glanced at his watch and saw, as expected, that it was nearly time for his shift to begin. He kissed his wife and new daughters goodbye, and then slipped out, closing the door behind him.

As soon as she was sure he was out of the way, Kathie sat up.

"Good, he's gone," she said. "More fun to gossip without him. Now tell all, Helen. How's Joanna getting on at Hogwarts?"

Oh, all right - since you ask so nicely!

"What house is she in?" added Nancy eagerly. "You must have had an Owl by now."

Helen gaped at her two old teachers. Then she dived after her dignity and gasped,

"I - I - you - what?"

Then she gave up trying to be Professor Entwistle and just gaped at them.

"O, don't be so silly. Of course we know," said Nancy.

"Nancy knows because she's head of the Chalet School - all the heads since Mademoiselle Lepattre have known."

"And Kathie knows now because she's my deputy, though she found out before then, because of Mary-Lou."

"All the heads since Mademoiselle? But what about Aunty Madge?" asked Helen, clutching at straws.

"Madame didn't need to know, because Mademoiselle dealt with all that," said Nancy. "But, of course, it was the main reason why she went into partnership with Madame."

"What was the main reason? You're not making any sense at all," said Helen, clutching her youngest daughter so tightly that the baby began to protest. Her sisters joined in out of sympathy, and for a few moments all three women were occupied in soothing their charges. But when they were all quiet again, Kathie said indignantly,

"Do you mean to say that Mary-Lou didn't tell you?"

"Or McGonagall," added Nancy.

"I can understand McGonagall not saying anything - Joanna's her responsibility, unless she's been Sorted into another house. But Mary-Lou!"

"Mary-Lou's been looking after Joanna too," said Helen, anxious to stick up for her old friend. "She's been protecting her from Mamma."

"In that case, good for Mary-Lou - not that I'd expect any less of her!" said Kathie. "But does that mean she hasn't even told you that the Chalet School is the most important school in the wizarding world?"

Not quite, but a very good guess!

Helen ran the sentence slowly through her head to see if it made any more sense. It still didn't, so she was forced to shake her head. "What do you mean?" she asked. "We have nothing to do with the wizarding world."

"She really doesn't know a thing!" said Kathie to Nancy.

"I know," said Nancy, with a gurgle. "What fun!"

Then she and Kathie both took deep breaths and turned to Helen.

"It all started because there wasn't anywhere to send female Squibs -"

"At least, nowhere where they would be understood, and there'd be others like them -"

"That was why it was only meant to be children over twelve at first -"

"But then young ones started coming, and sure enough, it wasn't long before someone had to leave to go to -"

"Beauxbatons - it was Beauxbatons first, then Durmstrang, because most of the pupils were Continental to begin with -"

"Whatshername was the first Chalet girl to go to Hogwarts - you remember, Phil Craven, Mary-Lou's best enemy -"

"And of course, we have always been one of the most popular career choices for culinary and domestic specialists -"

"Shut up!" cried Helen.

Kathie and Nancy stopped abruptly and looked at her. "Tell me slowly," said Helen. "I have no idea what you are talking about, so I can't begin to follow half-sentences all jumbled up like that. Kathie, you first."

Kathie had always loved telling stories, so she took a deep breath and began.

Yes, they are co-ed. Making them single-sex is a bizarre change they made in the film for no apparent reason.

Shortish bit today...

"Way back in the Dark Ages -"

"Nineteen-thirty," interrupted Nancy, and was glared at for her pains. Kathie continued as if there had been no interruption.

"Before any of us was even a twinkle in our fathers' eyes, there were two things the lack of which caused great problems in the continental magical community."

"Therese-Elise Lepattre, who had been Professor of Ancient Runes at Beauxbatons for many years, was sent to the UK to see if she could find a solution there," said Nancy.

"What she found was that there were several institutions where Squibs were taught alongside Muggles, completely unsuspected."

"And that, without fail, there was a witch in these institutions who was responsible for all pupils' health and domestic welfare, and more particularly for helping the Squibs to become part of the non-magical community and not to show themselves up too much."

"Hold on, hold on," said Helen at this juncture. "I suppose you're saying that all Matrons at boarding schools are witches. That'll come as a surprise to no-one. But what are Squibs?"

"The opposite of Joanna," said Kathie.

"She means, a non-magical child born into a magical family," said Nancy, glaring at her partner. Helen's face cleared.

"Is it very common, then?" she asked. "I mean, either way round," she elucidated, somewhat less clearly.

"No, not very - and Muggle-born wizards are more common than Squibs," said Nancy. "But there are certain old boarding-schools in England which have a time-honoured tradition of accepting Squibs - usually on a scholarship basis - and, very often, the vast majority of the staff know nothing about it."

Post subject:  Re: Joanna Creates a Sensation - updated 14 May

Glad you like the explanation - it makes sense of so many things!

"You see, life is much harder for a Squib than it is for a Muggle-born witch," said Kathie. "People like Joanna have inexplicable gifts and mysterious talents, and when they are eleven they go to wizarding school with a lot of other people like themselves and start to learn how to manage what they can do."

"For Squibs, it's the opposite," said Nancy. "They can't do a lot of things their parents and siblings take completely for granted, and on the whole, the wizarding world finds it hard to see the point of what might be termed Muggle gifts - such as a talent for music, or writing, or some such."

"And until they are eleven, there is always a chance that they are just late developers - lots of the children in their first years at all the great magical institutions have never performed a spell at all."

"And, of course, their families also hope that their magical gifts are latent, so no-one is identified as a Squib until they are eleven, and everyone so identified is always conscious of the disappointment to their family and community, as well as the end of their own ambitions."

"At the age of eleven!" exclaimed Helen.

"The wizarding world is much harsher than ours, in many ways," said Nancy soberly.

“It was because of a recognised need to help Squibs learn how to live in the Muggle world that many of the big British boarding schools were established,” said Kathie.

“The UK was far in advance of the continent in this. In 1930, there were schools for male Squibs on the continent, but not for females, and that was a problem.”

“Boarding schools have always been more common in the UK than on much of the continent, and Squibs have to go to boarding school.”

“Why?” asked Helen.

“Wizarding families can’t cope with teenagers,” explained Kathie. “They’re all packed off to boarding school at the age of eleven, and have been for over a thousand years.”

“So are you saying that Mademoiselle Lepattre founded the Chalet School for female Squibs?” asked Helen, clutching her head. “But Aunty Madge founded the Chalet School because she didn’t have enough capital to do so in the UK!”

I hadn't thought of the eleven-plus. Everyone in my family passed it, and by my generation it didn't exist any more. I can see the parallel, though.

Next bit!

Kathie and Nancy beamed at Helen.

“Yes, that’s right,” said Nancy.

“There’s no contradiction, if that’s what you’re thinking,” said Kathie. “Many old schools were founded in the same way, by a witch or wizard who knew all about it, and a Muggle who knew nothing.”

“And many schools stayed like that,” added Nancy. “There are lots of schools that never survive longer than a generation or two.”

“But by the time Mademoiselle became ill, it was clear that the Chalet School was going to live long and prosper, so she told Miss Annersley about the wizarding world.”

“It was a shock. And then, on top of that, there was the amalgamation with St. Scholastika’s – that first term was a nightmare for poor Hilda.”

“Of course, it was largely because of the wizarding world that the Chalet School was such a success, right from the start.”

“Yes, meeting up with the Pfeiffens – one of the biggest, and certainly the most powerful wizarding family in Central Europe – was a huge boost.”

“The Pfeiffens are wizards?” said Helen blankly.

“Yes, and Karen is a world-famous culinary wizard,” said Kathie. “Of course the domestic side of the Chalet School is run by magic. That’s common sense.”

Helen thought about this.

“I suppose – when you know about magic – it is,” she said slowly. “I always did wonder how it was that Karen was able to come out to the Oberland when Millies was started, and stay with us on the Island at the same time.”

Here's the end of chapter 10. The next chapter is with my beta-reader at the moment, so you'll have to be patient until she's had a chance to read it.

“Well, there you are then,” beamed Nancy.

“And now that’s settled,” said Kathie, “what house is Joanna in?”

“Gryffindor,” said Helen.

“Oh good, that’s McGonagall’s house,” said Nancy. “She’ll be with someone you’ve met.”

“Good,” said Helen vaguely. Then she looked directly at Kathie. “What did Nancy mean by saying you found out because of Mary-Lou?”

“I assume Mary-Lou did at least tell you about herself?” said Kathie.

“Yes, of course – it’s about the only thing she did tell us!” said Helen.

“Well, quite simply, I’m immune,” said Kathie. “That’s why I didn’t like Mary-Lou when I first came to the school.

“But – from what Mary-Lou said – that’s impossible,” protested Helen.

“So it is,” said Nancy. “That’s why, when they found out about Kathie, they summonsed her to Guthenburg and performed all kinds of fiendish experiments!” she cackled. Helen looked at Kathie, concerned.

“Nancy’s being silly,” said Kathie gently. “They were trying to find out what causes my immunity, because it’s so unusual.”

“And did they find out?”

“They think that I’m some kind of super-Muggle. I’m still a bit hazy on the genetics, but just as there are Muggle-born wizards and Squibs, occasionally there are – for want of a better phrase – wizard-born wizards – kind of super-wizards – Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts, is one. And they reckon I’m the opposite, a Muggle-born Muggle. Not only can I not do magic, I neutralise it.”

“Erm,” said Helen.

“Kathie’s explained it to me dozens of times, and it doesn’t even come close to making sense,” said Nancy lightly.

“All right, I won't try to make sense of it then,” said Helen. “So who was the first Squib to come to the Chalet School?”

“Simone Lecoutier, of course,” said Kathie.

We're back with Joanna for the next chapter.

Chapter 11 - Monday Morning

It was six thirty am on Monday morning, and in the first year girls' dormitory in Gryffindor tower, Joanna Entwistle woke up even though there was no rising bell. She leapt out of bed and ran to the bathroom, where she ran a warm bath whilst she brushed her teeth. Less than ten minutes later, she was back in the dormitory, fully clothed and stripping her bed. She flung the curtains of her four-poster over the poles at the top, checked that her drawers were meticulously tidy, opened the window next to her bed to its widest extent, and... wondered what to do next.

She looked at her watch. It wasn’t quite seven o' clock - breakfast wasn’t till eight, Professor McGonagall had told them last night. Some of her dormitory mates were beginning to stir, however, so Joanna set her jaw and marched out of the room and down to the common room. She had no intention of speaking to Nemesis Smith, and Nemesis had already said Things about her to the other girls in the dormitory. Joanna was the only Muggle-born girl in Gryffindor this year, and she consequently felt rather lonely - all the other girls had been told about Hogwarts since the day they were born, and all their parents had been there too. For the first time, Joanna wondered what it might feel like to come to the Chalet School if you didn't belong to the Clan.

As she heard her footsteps, Malkin got up from the settee where she had been curled and trotted up to Joanna with a little "Prreow!" of welcome. Joanna looked around the common room, and found herself wondering who did the work at Hogwarts. She knew the dormitory hadn't been this tidy when she went to bed! What had Bill said on the train - house-elves? As she scratched Malkin under the chin, Joanna made a mental note to ask Professor McGonagall about them in her pastoral session that morning.

When Charlie Weasley came down to the common room at ten to eight, he found Joanna in front of her locker with all her school books and equipment spread out around her, looking confused.

"What's up?" he asked, in lieu of "good morning".

"Oh, hello Charlie," said Joanna. "How do we know what books we'll need?"

"Just take a quill and ink and some parchment," said Charlie. "We don’t get our timetables till after breakfast, and they don’t expect us to have our books today. There will be some lessons, but they start properly tomorrow." This was familiar, and Joanna was relieved. She put a quill and ink in her satchel, and then packed her books neatly away. She turned away from locking it to find Charlie looking at her, open-mouthed.

“What’s the matter?” she asked, concerned.

“How do you put everything away so quickly and neatly?” he asked. “You’re Muggle-born. You don’t know any spells yet.”

“That’s not magic,” laughed Joanna. “That’s just being neat and tidy!”

Here's the next bit for you.

Just then, a gaggle of giggling girls came down the stairs from the dormitory. They slowed down when they saw Joanna and Charlie, and one of them whispered to the others. They all shrieked with laughter, and then swept past them.

“I say, Joanna –” said Charlie, looking after them with a very odd expression on his face.

“No, Charlie, I don’t want you to say anything to Professor McGonagall,” said Joanna. “They’re just being silly. I have better things to do with my time than worry about them.” As if to corroborate her statement, her stomach gave a terrific gurgle. Charlie laughed, and they hurried through the portrait hole and down to the dining room for breakfast.

Joanna’s eyes opened wide when she saw the dining tables. It was true that last night there had been many different kinds of food, but Joanna had assumed that was because it was the first day of term.

There was porridge, cornflakes, puffed rice and least five other kinds of cereal. There was brown, white, wholemeal and granary bread and toast. There were bacon and eggs, kippers, sausages, stewed apples, prunes and yoghurt. As Joanna sat down next to Charlie, she was relieved to see that there were also hot rolls, croissants and fresh fruit, so she was able to have her usual breakfast.

About half way through the meal, Professor McGonagall left the staff table and started to distribute timetables to the Gryffindors. Joanna presumed that the teachers performing the same service for the other houses were their Heads of House. She also observed that timetables entailed more discussion with some groups of students than with others, and supposed that your timetable must be more or less complicated depending on what year you were in. When she reached Charlie and Joanna, the Professor smiled and gave them two identical timetables.

“Miss Entwistle, please come to my study at the end of morning school,” she said. “As I mentioned yesterday, at the beginning of the first term, all Muggle-born students receive one session a week with their head of house. These will continue for as long as you need them. Of course, I am also available to all my students whenever they are in need of additional support or guidance.” She nodded at both Charlie and Joanna and added, “Your second lesson today will be with me, so I will see you later.”

Eek - didn't realise it was nearly a fortnight since I updated. I should get on with writing some more...

Here's a shortish bit to be going on with.

The first lesson that morning was Potions, which they shared with the Hufflepuff first years. Professor Slughorn seemed jovial and friendly, but showed a regrettable tendency to favouritism, even in the very first lesson. Joanna didn’t think any more highly of this just because she was one of those singled out – she preferred to make her own way rather than be patronised just because she was almost related to Mary-Lou Trelawney.
The bright spot in the Potions class was the slightly clumsy, plain, brown-haired girl who beamed at Charlie when they walked in. Joanna introduced herself cheerfully, and was somewhat surprised when Charlie didn’t seem to know how to introduce the other girl, who also didn’t contribute her name. During the course of the lesson, Professor Slughorn referred to her as “Miss Tonks” and announced that he had high expectations of her Potions ability. Miss Tonks blushed, and whispered to Joanna that her stupid name was stupid Nymphadora and she hated it, it was such a stupid, stupid name.
“Why don’t you get people to call you Dora, then?” asked Joanna. Dora and Charlie both stared at her, then Dora turned to Charlie.
“I like your new friend,” she said. “Can I borrow her sometimes?”
Joanna was thrilled that even though it was only her first full day at school, she seemed to have managed to make two friends already. It was a shame that the other girls in the dormitory didn’t want to speak to her at the moment, but she was sure that wouldn’t last. After all, they all knew Nemesis already: it was to their credit that they should stand by an old friend when Joanna had somehow offended her. She was sure that if she was just herself, she would soon persuade them that she meant no harm.

Oops, three weeks appear to have vanished in a puff of smoke this time. I would resolve to get better at updating, but I've already made that resolution three times and it hasn't stuck yet.

Thanks for your patience if you're still reading: I do appreciate the comments and I will try to post more regularly!

Potions seemed to be somewhat similar to Chemistry. Joanna hadn’t started Science lessons yet – in fact, General Science was one of IIIa’s new subjects, so she had been looking forward to beginning it this Autumn – but she had been into the Science labs. Last year, some of the Upper Fifth had given a science demonstration one Saturday evening. And of course, Dad was into science, and he had told Jackie and Joanna how important it was to measure carefully and follow the instructions precisely. Joanna thought Professor Slughorn would approve of that.

After Potions came Transfiguration. They didn’t share this lesson with anyone: it was just the Gryffindors. Professor McGonagall said that Transfiguration was one of the hardest subjects they would study at Hogwarts – which was, interestingly, pretty much what Professor Slughorn had said. She also gave them a brief pep talk about the greatness of Gryffindor house, pointing out that she would expect higher standards from them than from other students, and they needn’t expect her to show them any favouritism. Then she handed out a matchstick to each student, and Joanna was thrilled to begin her first practical lesson.

Transfiguration was indeed hard, and no-one managed to turn their matchstick all the way that first lesson. Joanna’s was looking somewhat metallic and was slightly sharper at one end; the only other student who had managed to get even that far was Nemesis. Joanna automatically turned to smile at her, but remembered in time. She was friends with Charlie, and Dora seemed to want to be friendly, too. That was a good start. It didn’t really matter about Nemesis.

There was a short break after the second lesson, and snacks and drinks were available in the dining room for those who weren’t still full of breakfast. Joanna was thankful for a glass of lemon squash, but she shook her head at all the food Charlie offered her. Bill nodded at them across the table, but he was too busy talking to his own friends to spare them any of his time.

Usually, after break on Mondays, they would have double Charms with Professor Flitwick. Joanna noticed a family resemblance with Fernanda, the Gryffindor prefect whom Bill liked. Professor Flitwick told them he was head of Ravenclaw house, so although Bill and Charlie were in the same house, it seemed that houses didn’t necessarily run in families. Because it was the first day, after a single Charms lesson, they went down to the dungeon to meet their teacher for Defence against the Dark Arts. Charlie had been looking stressed after Professor Flitwick became the third teacher to tell them that his subject would be one of the hardest they had to study, but he brightened up on the way to meet Professor Craven.

So all the Professors think their subject is the hardest. Is Charlie like Ron and not a natural student? Joanna seems keen to learn though.
