Post subject:  Jacynta joins the Chalet School? Completed 27/9

Jacynta sat in a corner of the room and looked round at the girls having fun around her. It was her second night at the Chalet School and she was completely confused. She had always wanted to some to the Chalet School but this was not what she had expected. She had begged to be allowed to attend from the moment she had realised that the Chalet School actually existed as she had read her mum’s collection of the books from an early age and thought it sounded like the ideal school.

Then about two years ago when she was nearly fourteen she had spotted an article about the Chalet School in a newspaper and at the bottom there had been a website which she had quickly typed into her laptop. She had spent hours looking at the site and the photographs of happy girls around a lake in Austria, climbing mountains in Switzerland and of girls swimming in the sea. She clicked on a link and arranged for a brochure to be sent to their house.

She came home one day to find her mum standing in the kitchen with the brochure in her hand. “No way are you going here,” she had said as soon as Jacynta had walked in the door. “We can’t afford this.”

“But Mum,” said Jacynta with a whine in her voice. “Think of all the opportunities a place like this would offer. And look, it looks just like the books.”

Her mum’s expression had softened as she looked at the pictures carefully. “I really loved those books and this looks just like I had imagined it. Look Jacynta love, I really would like for you to have the opportunity but there is no way this is going to happen.”

Jacynta had stomped off to her room and had slammed the door as she entered. When her father had come home she had tried talking to him but it was obvious that he had been prewarned by her mother and he had said “Not going to happen, so don't even ask,” as seen as he had come through the door

Jacynta had spent the next couple of weeks in a complete state of rebellion. She wasn’t spoilt by any means but she had had her heart sent on going to this school. She liked the school she was at now but it was so ordinary. Nothing exciting ever seemed to happen. Her closest friend had left at the end of the previous year and she didn’t fit in as well with the others. So Jacynta had started a major sulk. She slammed every door that she needed to shut and walked round with her IPod in ignoring everything her parents had to say.

Her parents had grounded her. She had to come straight home from school every day and was only allowed to go out for netball practice. Then they had banned her from using the computer when they found her looking at the website for the school over and over again. After the first week her teachers called home, as they were concerned about her changed attitude at school.

By the third week Jacynta was thoroughly miserable. She had never been in so much trouble before. She had been kicked out of netball practice the previous night for arguing with her coach, she seemed to be spending most of her lunch breaks in detention and no one was talking to her as she had practically ignored everyone round her. Her mother had talked to the school counsellor but when Jacynta had been called in to talk to her she had refused to say anything.

The atmosphere at home was horrible. Her parents attempted to talk to her but everyone just ended up yelling at each other. She had even heard her parents arguing loudly when they thought she wasn't around. Her mother wanted to try and send her somehow as she hated seeing her so unhappy but her father had said that with her present attitude she didn’t deserve anything and anyway they simply couldn’t afford the fees.

It was just after this that Jacynta had come home from school early, having decided to skip her last class, that as she was sneaking into the house she had seen her mum in the kitchen crying. Jacynta had rarely seen her mum crying. The last time had been when they had gone to her grandmother’s funeral the previous year. She suddenly realised that not only was she miserable but that she was making everyone around her miserable.

It had taken a lot of work to make up for her sulks. Her parents were the most forgiving and were happy to have their happy daughter back but she had so much school work to make up and the kids at both school and netball took longer to start talking to her again. Jacynta had banned herself from looking up the school website anymore and put all her Chalet books away.

It doesn't have to be a crossover to be in here.

Intrigued to see where it's going.

At this stage there is no crossover though I do have an idea for one if I decide to use it. It's in here but I nearly put it in St Clare's.

About 6 month later posters advertising exchange programs had gone up around her school overnight and presenters came to talk to them about the benefits of being an exchange student. Jacynta thought it all sounded very exciting but knew that her parents couldn’t afford it and also thought there was no way that she would ever be allowed to go after her performance earlier in the year. Many people talked about applying for the different programs and for a couple of weeks all talk seemed to revolve about going to study overseas with students weighing up the merits of different countries.

Jacynta tried to ignore it as much as possible but her ears had pricked up when she heard two girls talking about a school in Switzerland. They were standing in front of a small poster and commenting on how although how beautiful the scenery looked the uniform was ugly. When they moved away Jacynta looked at the poster. The pictures of the girls wearing blue uniforms looked very familiar. It was for the Chalet School and they were offering full scholarships.

Jacynta had walked home slowly that day wondering whether she should even try to bring up the topic with her parents. She was so deep in thought that she just waved acknowledgement to her mother as she walked in the door and headed straight to her room where she lay on her bed. She hadn't even heard her mother come into the room.

“Cyn,” her mum had said and Jacynta had sat up with a start.

“Oh hi mum. Did you say something?”

“Cyn darling I’m so proud of you”

Jacynta just stared at her mother totally confused. Her mum had laughed at the look on her face and her given her a piece of paper to read.

Dear Mr and Mrs Fielding,

We are delighted to offer your daughter Jacynta a full scholarship to the Chalet School, Swiss Campus, for the next school year.

There was more but after this reading this she had looked up at her mother who had laughed again.

“But I didn’t apply for this,” she had said.

“No but your father and I saw an ad in the local paper a couple of months ago. We talked it over and although your father was initially reluctant after some investigating, we forwarded your name, school reports and some references from your teachers to the Chalet School. They wrote back saying they were interested and that we would hear from them when they had made a decision,” her mother had replied.

“But what about interviews and such? I thought anyone who wanted to be an exchange student would have to go through interviews.”

“If you had kept reading you would have seen that they prefer not to interview students. They instead send out some of their staff to observe the prospective students in their own schools. They believe this allows them to know what a student is really like rather than them being prepped for an interview. Apparently the person who observed you posed as a relief teacher for the day and that she reported that you worked hard and was polite even though the others in your class played up for her,” her mum had said with a note of pride in her voice.

Jacynta had jumped up off her bed and squealing had given her mother a hug. The she had stepped back and asked in a trembling voice, “So I am really going to the Chalet School?”

“Yes.”

“What about Daddy? After what I was like earlier in the year he probably thinks I don’t deserve to go”

“At first he would even look at the ad. But as I said before he went off and did some research, spoke to some people who all highly recommended the school and came to the conclusion that this was an opportunity that was too good to be missed.”

When her father came home Jacynta had greeted at the door with a massive grin on her face and more sequels of delight.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are the best dad in the whole wide world.”

“Just remember that when I tell you off for something,” he said smiling down at the obvious happiness of his daughter.

That night they had talked about what going away was going to mean. Jacynta was warned that she had to achieve good grades for the rest of the year or they would pull her out. She was told that her father had found out that the school was old fashioned in many ways but that both her mother and father thought this was a good thing.

Fearful of losing her place at the school, Jacynta had worked hard in her last few months at school. She had ordered some language CD’s from Amazon to try and learn as much French and German as she could before she went and pestered her French teacher to help her at lunchtime.

They were asked to send her measurements over to Switzerland and were told that she would be issued with her uniform once she arrived. Jacynta wasn’t happy when she was told that she wasn’t allowed to take her IPod or her mobile phone and whinged to her mother about it.

“Well you don’t have to go,” was always her mother’s response.

A couple of days before Jacynta was due to leave, she had come down with a big cold. Her mother rung the school and talked to one of the staff and had explained the situation. A few phone calls later and everything had been arranged. The school did not want her to start ill and also did not want her to spread her cold amongst other students. Jacynta could fly over when she was better and would be met by one of the staff.

After the last phone call her mother had looked at her strangely. “I spoke to someone different today. Apparently all week the person I have been talking to is the assistant secretary, but today the person I spoke to is the head of office staff and her name is Rosalie.”

“Rosalie. You have to be joking. The Chalet School actually has someone called Rosalie working in the office,’ laughed Jacynta even as she was having a coughing fit. “Next you’ll be telling me that Hilda Annersley is head mistress.”

“Come on Cyn. That was in the books. This is real life. The school is run by a large corporation and was established by someone who loved the books. All correspondence has come from the Chalet School Corporation and was signed by Karen Williams. She is also the women who your father and I met after we sent in your application.”

At the airport Jacynta had hugged her parents and boarded her flight to Switzerland. Her parents had looked sad and she herself had shed a tear or two, as she had never been away from them for this long before. Her mother had told her that she wished that she could come too.

It was after she had disembarked and gone through customs that the strangeness had begun. A small woman holding a sign with her name on it had met her. Jacynta, suddenly feeling shy, had approached her slowly. The woman had smiled at her and then said, “You must be Jacynta Fielding. Welcome to Switzerland and the Chalet School. My name is Kathie Ferrars and I am going to be your form teacher.”

Jacynta’s mouth had dropped open in shock but she closed it again quickly. She gazed at the woman curiously noting the old-fashioned dress and hairstyle. It had to be a joke she thought. Kathie Ferrars was a character from a series of children’s books. She had decided to play along with it for the moment. They must think it was funny to welcome new students this way.

“Yes I’m Jacynta. Nice to meet you.”

“I know this is your first time at a boarding school so feel free to ask me any questions on our way up to the Platz. Now is this all you have? Your trunk has already arrived at school and is waiting for you to unpack it. Do you need a drink or something to eat before we head off?”

“No thank-you. I’m not really hungry. How long will it take us to get there?” asked Jacynta.

“A couple of hours. We will have to go slowly as the road is quite steep in parts.”

“Is it OK if I go to the toilet before we head off then?”

“Of course you may go and get a drink my dear,” responded Miss Ferrars. “Here let me hold your things for you.”

Perplexed Jacynta meekly handed over her belonging except for her purse and headed off to find the toilets. She wished she had her mobile phone with her but her mum had made her leave it behind. Instead she had given her a phone card and told her to call if she needed. The card, though, was in her bag that she had left with Miss Ferrars. She would call home as soon as she could.

As they left the airport building Jacynta had looked round eagerly. This was her first time in Switzerland and she wanted to remember every bit of it. She followed the mistress to an old car and climbed in.

“Wow, what a classic car. And you have it in such good condition.”

“This is one of the school cars. I am thinking about buying a little runaround with another mistress though so that we can pop off during our free time rather than always trying to borrow one of the school cars. It will give us a bit more freedom.” said Miss Ferrars as she deftly manoeuvred them out of the car park.

Jacynta had wondered how to bring up the questions that were whirling round in her brain. For quite a while she just sat silently looking out the window but eventually turned round to face the mistress.

“Are you really Miss Ferrars?” she asked hesitantly.

“Am I really what?”

“Miss Ferrars.”

“I guess I should tell you a bit about the school then,” the mistress had said as if she hadn’t even heard the question.

And then she had explained the rules and expectations of the school to Jacynta. Having reread all the books recently in anticipation of going to the school all of what she was told seemed very familiar. And any attempt to ask what was going on had been met with more information.

“When we arrive you will have to go and see Miss Annersley, the head, and I think Mrs Maynard may be there as well.”

“Come on you have to be joking,” Jacynta had finally said. “You really had me going there. Kathie Ferrars, Miss Annersley, the old car, your dress and all the rules you spoke about were straight from the books.”

“Speaking of books, you will have to give yours to Matron to vet. We have very strict rules on what you are allowed to read. And you will need to watch out for the amount of slang you use as well.”

Jacynta had given up. There had been no point questioning the mistress. She was not going to get any answers from her. Her head had started to hurt she was so confused now. It seemed as though she was going to the Chalet School of the books. Maybe she was dreaming, or had she somehow gone back in time.

She had looked out the window again, not even noticing the spectacular views outside. She pinched herself on the inside of her arm. It had hurt. “Not dreaming then,” she thought. “I must have gone back in time.” But then she remembered the very modern airport she had been in when she had met Miss Ferrars. Other cars she thought had suddenly looking out the window again. For a while there had been no other vehicles in sight but then a car had come towards them. Jacynta new very little about cars but even she had been able to tell that the car that passed them was a fairly new vehicle.

“Can I ring my mum to let her know I’ve arrived safely when we get to the school,” she had asked at one point.

Miss Ferrars had given a little laugh at this. “I should warn you at this point that you will be in Miss Annersley’s bad books very quickly if you use the phrase Can I…”

Jacynta knew the answer to this one. “Sorry, may I call home?”

“I don’t think so. It’s a bit too expensive. Miss Dene will send a telegram though.”

Jacynta had been silent for the rest of the journey. Eventually they had pulled into a long drive and then stopped in front of a large building.

“You can go in the front door today, but it is usually forbidden to the girls. Pick up your bags and follow me into the study.”

Jacynta did as she was told and hoping that all would be revealed followed quietly.

“Don’t forget to curtsey as you go in,” Miss Ferrars had said.

And into the study she had gone.

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta joins the Chalet School? Updated 14/9

She had come out of the study feeling more confused than ever. There had been no explanations. It seemed as though, somehow, she had ended up at the Chalet School in the 1950’s.

Miss Ferrars had introduced them all and had then left the room to put the car away.
Seated behind the desk had been Miss Annersley who had been just as the books described her. And seated in a chair on the other side had been Joey Maynard. Jacynta had loved Joey Maynard in all of the books. Joey had been her favourite character, especially early on as she seemed to have so much fun and have so many adventures.

“Welcome to the Chalet School Jacynta. We hope you will be very happy here,” Miss Annersley had said in what was indeed a beautiful voice. “Miss Ferrars said you are quite tired so I will not keep you long today.”

“And please feel free to come over to Freudesheim any time you want or if you have a problem you want to sort out. It means Happy Home you know. My oldest daughter Len is in your form so you can always talk to her if you can’t get over to see me.”

Jacynta had not known where to look. If she hadn’t been so confused she would have laughed. It was exactly as she had always wanted the Chalet School to be.

“Now do you have a short for your name? Jacynta is rather long for every day use,” Joey Maynard had gone on.

“Well my friends and family all call me Cyn,” she had managed to say.

Joey’s eyebrows had shot up at this. “No, no. I don’t think we can have anyone in the school called Sin. I’ll just have to come up with something better.” And she had thought for a moment and then said, “We will use the first part of your name and add a k on. How about Jack?”

Jacynta had tried to protest that she didn’t want a boy’s name but no one had listened to her. She had looked round trying to work out how she could get away but she had little cash on her and no idea where to go. She wasn’t even sure where she was exactly. The Swiss books had been a bit vague on the exact location of the school. Jacynta had been frantically trying to work out where in the series she was. She was to be in Len’s form but that hadn’t helped her very much. Until she had more information and had gotten her bearing a bit more she decided that it looked like she was going to be stuck here for a bit.

When is she going to bump into the famous Mary-Lou? What is she going to do about the toilet (will we finally find out if there was one?) How will she cope with the slang rules - I suspect a lot of the language she'd use everyday was considered slang in the 1950s.

Instead she had found herself being led upstairs by a Matron, not the Matey she was relieved to see, to a pretty dormitory with some sort of leafy name that she had already forgotten again. In a small cupboard near her bed was her uniform.

“Come on, I’ll show you where you can wash up quickly. The bell is going to go for Abendessen any second now. I’m sure you are hungry. I’ll get someone to explain how to unpack and such after you’ve eaten. I think we will leave your uniform until tomorrow. Early night for you. You look a little pale.”

Heads had turned as she walked into the speisesaal next to Matron whatever her name was. Matron had escorted her to a table and had introduced her as Jacynta Fielding but had told everyone that she liked to be called Jack and to help her with whatever she needed as it was her first time at boarding school. After she had sat down she had tried to tell everyone that Jack was not her name but everyone commented on how unusual it was but that she was not the first student to have had a boys name.

Recognising many people from the books she had grown up reading Jacynta had suddenly felt quite shy. Sensing that the new girl seemed overwhelmed Len had steered the conversation away from her but had seen to her every need. Jacynta, not feeling particularly hungry, had eaten the small serve that had been placed in front of her but had refused more. She had sat back and tried to work out which girls were with her. Knowing that she was with Len some of the girls had been easy to work out who was who but there were many others of whom she had had no idea.

At the end of the meal Len had whisked her back up to her dormitory and had proceeded to show her the only way of setting out her cubey that Matron would accept.

“I’m your sheepdog,” Len had told her. “This means I have to show you how things work around here. If you have any questions or difficulties just ask.”

Jacynta had had plenty of questions but Len had been oblivious to what she had asked. She had replied to the questions with answers about daily school life as though she was reading off a script. Len had expressed amazement that she didn’t know that the school was trilingual and had asked if she had read the prospectus. Then she had asked what sport Jacynta had played. Jacynta started to feel that it didn’t really matter what she said. Everything that she was seemed to be predetermined. With a memory of one of the books she had decided to test this out.

Finally Len had asked if Jacynta was COE or catholic. When Jacynta had replied that she didn’t really care for religion, Len hadn’t even shown any surprise and had simply exclaimed, “So am I. When time for prayers comes just stick with me. By the way did I know that we have started subscriptions for our own chapels?”

By this time Jacynta’s head had started to ache quite badly. Len had fetched the matron who had helped her earlier and she had ordered Jacynta into bed straight away.

After she had changed and was in bed, and it was a bed like nothing she had slept in before, a small wirey women in an angel wing cap, had come towards her with a glass of milk in her hands. Upon seeing her Jacynta had known immediately that this was the one and only Matey. Matey had given her the glass and instructed her to drink it up commenting that they couldn’t have her becoming ill again. With an inward groan Jacynta had taken the glass and had drunk it without complaint, as she knew just what happened to anyone who tried to defy Matey. Matey had then left her after telling her that she was to remain in bed the next morning until she had been to see Jacynta.

Sure that she wouldn’t be able to sleep Jacynta had never even heard the others come upstairs and was woken by a bell clanging the next morning. Mindful of what Matron had told her she didn’t set a foot out of bed but could hear the others rushing round getting ready. No one had even commented on her remaining in bed so she guessed they had been told that she was to remain where she was.

By the time Matron had come to see her it was quite late and Jacynta had been feeling quite hungry. Matey had bought her breakfast in bed and once she had finished this had shown her to the baths and explained that she could have it cold or chill off. After one of the coldest baths, she had been sure that the water was melted snow or ice, she had ever had Jacynta had dressed quickly into her uniform and had then been shown how to make her bed.

“Keep it like this,” Matey had told her, “And I won’t have to come and get you to redo it.”

Despite the fact that the books had always said that Matey’s bark was worse than her bite Jacynta had not wanted to get into her bad books and had been too scared of her to question her about what was going on. The day had passed by in a bit of a blur. She had been swept from one lesson to another, met all the mistresses and everything had had this strange sense of familiarity but at the same time it had been so different. It had been one thing to read about the Chalet School but actually living it was proving to be more difficult than she would ever have thought.

At least she had finally worked out where in the series she was supposed to be when she had been introduced to another new girl who went by the name Ricki. It was the term after the big Coming of Age celebrations and Mary Lou Trelawney was in her first term as head girl.

Jacynta sat in the common room trying to think about that book. As she wasn’t as fond of many of the Swiss books as she had been of the earlier books in the series and so consequently while she knew where it fell in the series, other than the fact that Richenda started school had the major accident with her eyes towards the end she really didn’t know much about the term she was in. She thought there might also have been something about a storm.

Len noticed her sitting by herself and came to ask her to join in with the others. She explained that it wasn’t the custom of the school to let new girls just sit alone. Jacynta went over to the rest of the group with Len and listened to them chatting in a queer mixture of French and other languages about what they thought of this years prefects.

“I still think it’s a bit of a pity that Vi didn’t get it,” said one girl in English. Jacynta knew that she wasn’t in her form but she thought must be Prudence Dawbarn as she looked like her twin Priscilla who was.
“You only think that because Mary-Lou pulled you up for slang again yesterday,” said her twin also in English.

“Mary-Lou is far too much on the spot,” said Prudence. “She always seems to know when something is going on.”

Others in the group were nodding ruefully at this statement and as if to prove her point the door opened at that point and Mary-Lou herself came in. “English Prudence,” she said in slow French so that even Prudence could understand. “You know better than that. Pay your fine.”

Prudence grimaced and Priscilla looked at her twin sympathetically. Jacynta stared at the tall senior who while not conventionally pretty had something that made people look at her twice. She had piercing blue eyes and curly hair. Jacynta then shook herself. What was going on with her? Her thoughts were now starting to sound like the books.

Mary-Lou came towards Jacynta and said the same slow French that she had used with Prudence, “Welcome to the Chalet School Jacynta. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to speak to you before now. How are you finding everything?”

“It’s bloody awful. The frickin uniform itches and……” Jacynta’s voice trailed off as she realised the others were all staring at her with horror in their eyes. “Of course,” she thought. “Now they hear what I am saying.”

“I’m sorry you are not happy here,” said Mary-Lou in icy tones. She was also speaking in English so that she was sure Jacynta would understand what she was saying. “Now you are a new girl and I don’t know if anyone has explained to you, or maybe you didn’t fully understand, about the rules here, but you are not allowed to use any slang here and as for swearing. Well that is strictly forbidden. I will let you off this time but if it happens again you will find yourself with a Head’s Report.

As Mary-Lou swept out of the room the rest of the girl’s crowded around Jacynta exclaiming on her comments. Len was looking at her reproachfully.

“I’m sorry,” said Jacynta. Then she tried to pour oil over troubled waters. “I’m just really tired and I guess I’m a bit homesick. I’ve never been away from home before.”

The girls looked somewhat mollified by this but Len resolved to get this strange new girl alone and go over the rules with her again before too much longer. Jacynta for her part kept quite for the rest of the evening and when the bell went for bedtime she went up quietly with the rest. Lying in bed she set her alarm for 1am and placed it under her pillow. In the common room that night she had decided that she needed to explore the building to see if she could find out what was going on.

Jacynta left the dormitory quietly and made her way down the corridor. A cough from a dormitory as she passed made her turn off her torch quickly and stand still. She stood silently trembling for a couple of minutes but as no one appeared she decided she was safe and continued down the corridor until she came to the stairs which led downstairs. Here she paused for a minute as she debated with herself whether to keep going and try and find her way to the attics or to go downstairs. She decided to head down as she wasn’t sure where the attic was. She was not going to search any of the dormitories as it was too risky with everyone in them. She would have to try and find a way to search them during the day.

As she crept down the stairs Jacynta was very careful. She had in the back of her mind all the stories about when people creeping round the school at night had tripped with a loud crashing noise and woken everyone up. She made her way towards the office area first hoping to use the phone. But as she suspected it was all locked up. She then went along all the forms but again had no luck. Jacynta started to feel cold. It was sort of spooky down here by herself and she had convinced herself that she was going to run into something. She heard a noise somewhere and as she spun round she tripped and her torch went skidding across the floor. She went after it and deciding that she had risked enough that night headed back towards the stairs. As she was about to head up she heard she voices whispering.

“I’m sure I heard something,” said the first voice.

“Well I can’t hear anything now,” said another.

“I don’t know why anyone would be down here at this hour but I suppose we had better have a quick look.”

Jacynta looked around frantically for somewhere to hide. But where she was seemed to be devoid of any hiding places. She held her breath, as she was sure whoever is was would be able to hear her breathing, and pressed herself against the wall. The voices moved away from her as they moved towards the other and of the corridor. Through the faint light of their torches she could make out that one of the people was Mary-Lou but she was not sure about the other.

She crept up the stairs as quietly as possible and headed back to her dormitory. Before she could get there, however, she was startled by a voice asking her why she was out of her bed. It was Matron.

“I’m sorry I was trying to get a glass of water as I felt thirsty. Then I got lost and couldn’t remember where my dormey was,” Jacynta managed to say although her heart was thumping. She was very glad that it was dark in the corridor as she was not terribly good at lying and had a tendency to blush when she tried.

Matron gave her a long look. “I’ll take you back now. Did you get your drink Jack?” she asked.

“Yes thank you Matron,” said Jacynta deciding that this was probably not the best time to remind Matron that her name was Jacynta. She followed Matron down the last bit of the corridor to her room. Matron followed her into her cubicle and made sure she was tucked up before she left.

“Now don’t leave your bed again until the rising bell please. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to you.”

Evil moi? Now worried about the impression of me you seem to have. Maybe I shouldn't post any more or should finish it now.

How about? - Jacynta woke up to find bright sunlight streaming through her window. She looked round. She was in her room at home. It had all been a dream or rather a nightmare.

All I will say is that it has nothing to do with Joey's World or TV

Jacynta found it difficult to sleep after this and spent the rest of the night tossing and turning. Matron’s last words kept reverberating in her head. Did Matron know why she was here?

The following day was a difficult one for Jacynta. Tiredness and stress were starting to take its toll on her. She struggled to get out of bed and was pushed this way and that by the others in their rush to get downstairs in time for breakfast. She played with her food as she wasn’t really hungry but after a look from Mary-Lou, who for some reason was seated at their table, she managed to finish a small plate. Added to that it was a German day. She had been surprised at how well she had managed on the previous day with French but with German she struggled a lot more. Learning from CD’s and books bought from Amazon was completely different to having to live in that language. She also noticed that although the others still seemed willing to help her there was now a little coolness in their responses to her and they were not so quick to include her in their conversations.

She lacked focus in lessons that day. She spent half her time wondering why this was happening to her and the other half trying not to go to sleep. First up had been maths with Miss Wilmot. She had thought this was one subject she might be OK in, as numbers looked the same in any language, but instead it was a nightmare. She had no idea how to do the sums they were doing without a calculator and she had no idea of what Miss Wilmot was saying when she came to help. Unfortunately Jacynta had yawned loudly as she was talking to the mistress. The mistress had commented on her rudeness and had muttered something about extra coaching.

History she couldn’t follow the lesson at all, although warned by what had happened with Miss Wilmot she kept her head down and tried very hard not to yawn. By break she was almost in tears and she snapped at someone who bumped her causing her to nearly spill her drink. The person she snapped at burst promptly into tears. She heard someone near her murmur, “Wet blanket.” Surprised Jacynta looked at the girl and recognised her as Odette Mercier. Shaken out of her own tears she apologised to the girl. She tried to talk to her but it appeared as if Odette knew even less German that what she did so the conversation had not gone very far.

As she was about to head back to her classroom with the others Mary-Lou came towards her. Jacynta did not want to talk to her and so slipped of the splasheries and locked herself in a stall. There being toilets was one of the few things she had been pleased to find when she had arrived, even if no one ever mentioned them. She knew that couldn’t miss the next lesson but she stayed in the stall for as long as she dared before heading back to class which was German.

She somehow made it through her lessons until lunch. She sat between Odette, who gave her a watery smile, and Joan Baker. Len was across the table from her with Rosamund Lilley.

“How are you going today?” Len asked her.
Using very halting German and English when she didn’t know the words Jacynta managed to reply that it was vey different from her last school and that she was finding the German difficult. Len translated her sentences for her and made her repeat it back slowly.

“Keep a notebook and try to learn at least 10 new words a day. If you try hard you will soon find you get on as well as most people. Your accent is very British but that will improve with some practise. New girls are excused from fines for the first two weeks,” said Len in German. She then repeated her remarks in English to help Jacynta.

During the rest period where Jacynta pretended to read a book that someone had given her she thought about how or if she should approach Matey. Try to get sick so she would be admitted to the san. “No that won’t work,” she thought. “I think there is a separate nurse there.” In the end she decided Matron was part of whatever was going on and that she was not likely to help if asked.

At the end of break Mary-Lou was one of the prefects helping to stack the chairs. She looked at Jacynta and said something to her. Jacynta looked at her blankly and pretended that she did not understand even though she knew Mary-Lou had said something about a talk. There was just something she did not trust about the prefect.

Netball came after their rest and it was a relief to Jacynta to just be outside and enjoy her game. It was a beautiful day and by the end of her game she felt more relaxed. She had been urged by the others to try out for one of the school teams. They went back inside to do their prep and towards the end Mary-Lou came into the room. She asked Jacynta if she could have a word with her quickly. Knowing there was no escape this time Jacynta followed the prefect into the corridor.

“I’ve been trying to catch you all day,” she said in both English and German. “Mrs Maynard is giving a party for new girls tomorrow. She held off until you arrived. I’m going as well. Who would you like to take with you?”

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta joins the Chalet School? Updated 20/9

Jacynta was too tired that night to do any exploring. During the course of the day she had worked out if she just pretended that she was a new girl she could converse quite normally with people. It was as soon as she tried to go what she termed off script that no one paid attention to what she was saying. She had spent the evening in the common room reading, fending off the others with the explanation that she had a bit of a headache. She headed off any suggestion that she should go to Matey by saying she just needed to get some sleep. The prefects were also in the common room that evening and Jacynta kept a watchful eye on Mary-Lou but the headgirl didn’t come near her.

Jacynta woke up to a miserable Saturday. The sun had disappeared and a very light rain was falling. At least she could talk English again though. The first part of the morning was taken up with letter writing and mending. Jacynta had no mending so she decided to write a letter to her parents. But what to say? She was sure that someone would read her mail before it was sent out, if it was even sent. But they would have to send something wouldn’t they o her mother would wonder why she hadn’t heard from her. Also she was sure her parents, in particular her mother, would think she was just joking if she tried to tell them she was at the Chalet School of the books. So she sat there and stared at the piece of paper for a long time. Finally she wrote:

Dear Mum and Dad,

The Chalet School is exactly like the books. It is certainly a different experience. I have met lots of people who have generally been very kind to me. Sorry this letter is so short. I’m too busy to write more at the moment.

I love you and miss you lots

Cyn xxx

Jacynta read back over what she had written. She didn’t think anyone complain about such a bland letter. But her parents wouldn’t know she was trapped her either.

“Jack,” came a voice close to her. Jacynta jumped and turned around. It was Len.

“Oh Len can you please cal me Jacynta. I don’t really like the name Jack,” she said.

“Jack’s easier. Jacynta is really too long for everyday use. Lots of us use shorts. Len is short for Helena you know.”

“I did know that. What about Mary-Lou? That's just as long as Jacynta.”

“Well Mary-Lou is actually short for Mary-Louise. I can’t see us calling her plain Mary though,” Len replied. “Anyway Jack I need to know who you’re going to take over to Freudesheim today. We have to give a list of all people going to Miss Annersley.”

Jacynta had thought about this before she had gone to sleep the previous night. She knew from the books that it seemed to be a custom to take your sheepdog with you, but she figured Len would probably be going anyway. Then she had thought about Odette and how miserable she seemed.

“I haven’t asked her yet but what about Odette? She looks like she needs cheering up.”

“Didn’t Mary-Lou tell you? This is a party for all the new girls from our form. There will be you, Ricki, Odette, Carlotta, Joan Dancy and Jeanne Daudet. Mamma feels it helps them to settle in. Mary-Lou is coming as well as Mamma says that she wants to catch up with her and find out how she is coping as head girl. There will be lots of cakes and Anna makes the most delicious lemon biscuits usually.

“I know all about your mother’s parties. I remember rea…someone telling me about them,” said Jacynta. “I just forgot that Odette was new too,” in this book, she nearly added. She also didn’t add that she had always wanted to attend one of the new girl parties.

“They did,” said Len looking a little put out. “So Jack who will you take?”

“By the time we all take someone it seems as though most of our form will be going. Are you sure your mother can cope with us all,” said Jacynta.

“Don’t worry about Mamma. She is used to lots of people. And Anna is there to do the cooking. How about I come with you if you don’t know whom to take. I wasn’t going but this way I can help out a bit because as you’ve pointed out it looks like there will be oodles of us.”

Jacynta smiled at the response. It was so close to what she had predicted Len might say. “That would be nice,” she said.

As Len walked away Jacynta thought about how difficult it had been to have a conversation without using any slang, swear words or being who she really was. After lunch Jacynta walked though a small gate in the hedge to Freudesheim where they were greeted on the front step by Joey Maynard.

It was with some apprehension that Jacynta entered Freudesheim. She didn’t know why but she felt the combination of Jo and Mary-Lou was something that she should be worried about. In their own ways they were both forces to be reckoned so together she presumed they could be trouble. The only thing reassuring her slightly was the fact that she wasn’t here alone with the pair of them. If her whole adventure was due to them then surely they wouldn’t do anything in front of the others. Bruno, she was relieved to find out had been sent off for the afternoon, as Jo didn’t think she could cope with him bounding round and all the girls as well. She found she was tense as they were led into the Saal where Joey had laid out a positive feast for them. There were oodles of cream cakes, sandwiches, crumpets and a large pile of biscuits.

“I try to have a real English tea for people when they come as I find it helps them to adjust,” she heard Joey saying.

“But not all of us are English,” Jacynta thought to herself. “And I have never seen cream cakes like these at home. Mum would have a fit if she saw more eating too many of those. She’d be muttering about calories and how much exercise we’d need to do if we ate them.”

The girls sat around the room with Joey in a big chair. “It’s so lovely to see you all here. Have you heard the story of how the school began? I was the first ever pupil.”

Jacynta nodded although she noticed some of the other new girls were shaking their heads. Odette, she saw, had not comprehended much of the conversation at all and seemed ready to cry again. Jacynta gave her a smile which seemed to cheer her up a bit and then sat back to listen to the stories of her host. She had read about all of these stories. But there was something different about hearing them from the source as to reading about them. She found herself laughing long with the rest and looking eagerly at the photos that were being passed round to accompany some tales.

“Ok girls, it’s time to play some games,” said Joey standing up. “You can keep eating while you play. Anna would be disappointed if you didn’t finish this spread.”

Jo excused herself at the beginning of the games saying that she had to go and check on the twins and Cecil. She explained that Cecil had given them a few worries lately as she was cutting her teeth and had kept everyone awake at night. She promised to bring her down to show her off if she was awake. “She’s not had much sleep the last few nights so I’m not going to wake her up for you lot,” she said grinning at them as she left.

The paper games that followed were not the most interesting this that she had ever done but as the others were clearly enjoying themselves Jacynta tried to make out that she was as well. She found Mary-Lou looking at her once or twice, which unnerved her a bit, and she nearly came to grief over an alphabet game when she at first wrote down Harry Potter for a book beginning with H.

When Jo came back down after seeing to Cecil she had two fair-haired children who she introduced to everyone as Felix and Felicity. In response to seeing the surprise that the two caused Jo laughingly explained they took after their father, not her. While they were still playing games Jo came round to each of the new girls in turn to find out how they were going. She headed for Odette first and had a short conversation with the girl in French. Odette looked quite sad as she had her little chat. Jacynta heard the word mother a few times and felt sorry for the poor girl. Ricki Fry was next on the list. She had been enjoying herself to the hilt all afternoon. Jacynta hadn’t really spoken to her but she had seemed friendly enough.

When it was her turn Jacynta reminded herself to be careful about what she said. The start of the conversation was fairly bland with Joey asking about her family and if she had any brothers or sisters. Jacynta told Jo she was an only child and then that her father worked for a large company. She didn’t give away the name of the company as she was sure Jo would never have heard of it.

“So how are you finding life at the Chalet School Jack?” Jo finally asked.

“Since I was a kid one of my biggest wishes was always to come to the Chalet School but never thought it would be possible. Now that I’m here it’s not quite what I thought it would be. It’s…” here Jacynta paused. She was not quite sure what she could say.

Jo looked at her shrewdly. “Real life is often like that. You’ve been given this opportunity. It’s up to you what you make of it.” Jo left her and moved onto the last couple of new girls while Jacynta was left to ponder over her remarks.

They finished the games soon after this and then said their goodbyes. Jo reminded them on the doorstep that people could come and see here at anytime if they had a problem to they couldn’t resolve. The afternoon had been easier than Jacynta had thought it would be although she was no closer to finding out why she was here. She was sure though that Jo Maynard and possibly Mary-Lou held the key.

Hmm, while Mary-Lou seems quite threatening Joey doesn't, or not in the same way - seems to be a definite double meaning in her words, though!

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta joins the Chalet School? Updated 23/9

Two weeks later Jacynta found that nothing had changed. She was still stuck here. Despite a couple of nightly forays she had discovered absolutely nothing. She had even managed to get in the office one night when she found the door unlocked but she couldn’t get her phone card to work and there was not trace of any computers or anything more modern in the whole school. On walks around the Platz she discovered that they seemed to be stuck in the same time period as her. Her mind came up with different scenarios every day some more absurd than others. Was the Platz a mysterious place in the space-time continuum where nothing ever changed? Had someone invented some sort of hologram thing like they had on Star Trek?

Jacynta had been caught out of bed again by Matron and had used the needing a drink excuse again. The next night Matron had come to her and told her to keep a glass of water in her cubicle so she wouldn’t need to be out of bed at night. This made her excursions more stressful as she had no desire to be reported by Matey or spend her free time sewing. She was beginning to get used to the food but was thoroughly sick of coffee and missed having the variety of food and drink that she was used to at home. The baths were still a sore point in the morning and she wished she could wash her hair and her clothes more often.

German days she still found very difficult and she had been warned by Len that her two weeks of no fines were up now and that she would now be treated just like everyone else. She was now receiving extra coaching in maths and German, but with maths in particular, even after only two weeks, she found herself understanding it better than she had in the past.

She was still quite a loner in her form. She was reluctant to get close to the others, as she wasn't sure whom she could trust. Len took her sheep dogging duties very seriously and made sure she was never lacking for anything and that she knew what she was doing. Students and staff alike they were true to their characters in the books. The people she found she enjoyed being with the most were those who very little was written about as they had a certain spontaneity that the major characters seemed to lack. She hadn’t seen Jo Maynard again although she thought about her words often. Even Mary-Lou seemed to have backed off a bit.

It was also becoming easier to remember what she could and couldn’t talk about and when she slipped up she was no longer so shocked that they stayed on script. There had been no more incidences of people suddenly understanding her when she swore or used modern phrases. She was even starting to get used to being called Jack by most people. Without really realising it Jacynta had started to become almost reconciled to her life. Her main hope now was when she went home for the holidays she would return to her previous life. She clung to this as she couldn’t imagine never going home again and being stuck here for the rest of her life.

To her surprise she had received a letter from her parents who told her they were pleased that she was enjoying her new school so much. It was a pity that she had lost her phone card but enclosed in the letter was another one for her. Her mum had also asked if the school was anything like the books and asked her to include some photos in her next letter. After reading this letter Jacynta had disappeared off by herself and had indulged in a good cry. Obviously her parents thought she was at the modern school so they would not be looking to help her in any way.

Last Saturday evening there was entertainment by St Hilds who had produced a series of tableaux, which they had to guess. Jacynta’s final score was abysmal, as she didn’t know most of the scenes. The book ones she had no idea of as apart from Chalet School stories her tastes had been more modern. The historical ones had been a little better but not much.

The two Sundays they had had were probably the hardest days as they gave her too much time to think. Steady rain had mean there had been no going out. For Jacynta who was used to spending her time on the weekends playing on the internet or on computer games, hanging out with her friends and watching TV she found time hung heavily on her hands. To have to spend the first part of the morning in church and then more letter writing, especially when she had no one to write to, was not her idea of fun. Then she had expected to spend the afternoon reading quietly. Even reading a Josephine Bettany book, which Len had told her to borrow from the library when she heard that Jacynta had not read any of the books even though she knew about them, did not hold any appeal. Today though they had been told they would be going out on a ramble which meant that she would be keeping her eyes open for any opportunity to escape.

Jacynta headed off with her form towards St Cecilie, which was a tiny village about six miles away from the Platz. They took sandwiches with them and were not expected back at school until seventeen o’clock. They had three mistresses accompanying them. Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot she both knew but she was not sure about Miss Moore although she had heard from the others that she could be very sarcastic when she wanted. As it was a Sunday they were allowed to speak any language they wanted.

Until they were off they Platz itself they had to walk in pair and keep their voices down but after that they were allowed to break off into groups. Jacynta started to walk off by herself to so she could try and explore a bit but was quickly called back by the others. Walking with Len, Jo Scott Rosamund Lilley and Ricki Fry she listened to their chatter about hockey and spent time with Ricki admiring the Lake Thun and the mountains around them. Then both Ricki and Len went off after Odette who had gone off by herself and looked close to falling off a precipice and who then had to endure a telling off from them mistresses for going to close. Odette joined their group as well after this and then they continued up the mountain towards St Cecilie.

The incident with Odette jogged something in Jacynta’s brain and she was quiet for a few minutes. The others too busy with trying to get Odette to cheer up failed to notice and were surprised when she suddenly gasped and stopped in the middle of the small plank bridge they were crossing.

“Are you OK Jack? You haven’t hurt yourself or anything have you?” asked Len pulling her the rest of the way across the bridge.

Jacynta was in a quandary. She had just remembered that this was the ramble when they got caught in the horrific storm and had to cross the flooded stream. She knew that everyone got back to school safely but she wondered if she could prevent the event happening at all. “No I’m not hurt. I just think we should head back to school now,” she said.

“Are you too tired to go on? We’ll stop and have a rest soon,” Rosamund said kindly.

Miss Ferrars came up to the group at this point and asked Len and Con to run ahead and get milk for them all. Then she noticed that Jacynta looked worried.

“What’s up Jack? It’s too nice a day to look so serious.”

Jacynta decided that she had to try. “It’s a nice day now but I think there’s going to be a big storm.”

Betty Landon who was nearby said “A storm! With that sun and sky! You’re crackers.”

Miss Ferrars turned her face skyward. “What makes you think there’s going to be a storm Jack?”

“Because there was one in the books,” said Jaycnta without thinking. As usual though no one picked up on this.

“Well I’m not sure why you seem so sure,” said Miss Ferrars. “But I’ll keep my eyes open. Sometimes there can be a storm after a day like this but there are no signs at the moment. Now girls why don’t you all run ahead together now and get the milk for us.”

Jacynta considered running off in the opposite direction but figured that she would just end up in a lot of trouble so went with the others to collect the milk. Secretly she was a little excited. She had always wished she could experience a Chalet style adventure and had even talked them over with her mum on occasion. Her mum had laughed at her and told her that she probably wouldn’t find it much fun if she actually had to go through one but had said that she had also longed to have one too. Now it looked like it was going to happen.

They collected the milk and made their way to a meadow where everyone else was sitting on fallen logs or doubled-up raincoats on the ground. Everyone pulled out their food and coffee and they sat down to a merry picnic. Jacynta couldn’t help herself and kept looking up at they sky but the others just laughed at her.

But suddenly Miss Ferrars jumped up. “Jack was right. There’s a storm on the way. Get packed up quickly girls so we can get on our way. It’s a long way home.”

At her words everyone looked up and although the sun was still shining there was queer shine too it and there was a strange stillness in the air. Rubbish and left over food s were pushed back into their knapsacks and they pulled on their raincoats and berets. Then in lines they made a run for it. But before long some of the girls started to lag behind. She saw the mistresses giving each other worried glances and then as they turned a corner the all the girls gasped in horror. Thunder could be heard and in the open space in front of them they could see a huge mass of clouds heading towards them. There was no way they were going to make it.

The mistresses conferred quickly and told the girls to keep going as Miss Moore said there was a barn up ahead. Some of the girls looked terrified. Lighting began to flash.

“Run,” yelled the mistresses as they tried to help the girls who were falling behind. But some girls were beginning to stumble Miss Ferrars and Miss Moore went ahead with the girls still able to run while Miss Wilmot stayed behind to help the ones who couldn’t run any more. Jacynta was just about at the end of her tether. She had a huge stitch in her side and felt like just dropping to the ground. The thunder grew louder and louder and bolt of lightning hit the ground between them and the barn. This gave Jacynta the energy she needed and she finally found her way into the barn safely. No sooner had they closed the door than the rain started.

There was no light in the barn and some of the more nervous girls screamed at of the particularly loud thunderclaps. Eventually the thunder began to pass but Miss Moore discovered that the rain was still coming down in torrents when she opened the door a couple of inches. Jacynta felt much better by the time they had had a quick singsong and some coffee and felt pleased by her little adventure. It hadn't been as bad as she thought and had certainly been very exciting.

Len discovered that the sky seemed to be coming clearer and then as the rain was easing and no one wished to spend the night in the barn they all headed out again with their raincoats fully buttoned up. They had not gone far however when they came to the small plank bridge they had crossed earlier. The stream below had burst its banks and become a raging torrent in the centre.

Miss Wilmot quickly pulled off her shoes and stocking and made her way into the centre of the bridge holding firmly onto the handrail. She declared they could make it across and in pairs, one larger girl and one smaller girl they began to make their way across. Joan Baker like Miss Wilmot made multiple journeys. Jacynta began to make her way across and the force of the water surprised her. She had never felt anything like it before. She struggled against the force of the water and then felt Miss Wilmot stumble and her grip on the mistress’ arm slipped and with a short scream she disappeared under the water.

The coldness of the water began to creep into her bones and she felt herself tiring. Her clothes seemed to weigh a tonne. After what seemed to be forever she saw Miss Moore, Len and Jo Scott. She screamed again. Miss Moore spotted her and they raced towards her. They came into the water and lifted her onto the bank. She lay there not able to move. “Len run back and tell the others we have her. Then head on to the school and tell them to ring the San. I’ll stay her with Jack. I don’t want to move her just in case she has injured something and she looks like she is in no state to go anywhere by herself.” said the mistress.

Jacynta couldn’t move and lay there with her eyes closed. She could feel the rain falling on her face.

“Jack, Jacynta can you her me,” she heard Miss Moore’s voice. But it seemed to be coming from a long way away. “Come on Jacynta open your eyes.”

With an effort Jacynta managed to open her eyes and found herself looking up in to the mistress’ worried face.

“Can you talk? Don’t try and move. Are you hurting anywhere?”

Jacynta tried to say something but her voice wouldn’t come. She shut her eyes again. She was so tired.

“Stay with me Jack. Come on, don't go to sleep.”

She opened her eye again. The mistress was on the ground next to her opening a first aid kit and put some bandages on her legs. She pulled off her own coat and was laid it over Jacynta. “You’re going to be alright Jack. Len and Jo have gone to get help. Someone will be looking for us. They know where we went today and will have sent someone for us.”

“Ok,” she managed to croak. “Do you think this will end up in the books?”

Miss Moore held her hand until they finally heard people moving towards them. It was still raining heavily and Jacynta could see that the mistress had started to shiver.

“We’re over here,” she heard Miss Moore call.

Jacynta saw two men come towards her carrying a stretcher. One of the men put a blanket around Miss Moore while the other knelt down beside her and ran his hands over her.

“How did you get here so quickly Jack?” asked Miss Moore

“When you didn’t turn up at the Chalet Hilda figured you had been caught in the storm and when the rain had let up a bit asked it we could come and pick you up. We met Len and Jo as we were driving up and they told us what happened.”

Jack continued his examination of Jacynta and she winced at various times. “I don’t think she’s broken anything but we will have to take her to the San to be sure. She ‘s got some nasty cuts that will need some stitches will be bruised and sore. I’ll give her something now and then we’ll put her on the stretcher and take her with us. You’re coming too. You’ve been sitting here in wet clothes for a long time.”

Jack Maynard opened the bag he had with him and quickly put something in a syringe. “Ok Jack this will only hurt a little bit,” he said as he gave her a shot in the arm. He then wrapped her up in blanket and with the help of the other man placed her gently on the stretcher. The next thing Jacynta knew she was waking up in a white room and Joey Maynard was sitting beside her.

“How are you feeling?” was the first words Jacynta heard. She tried to sit up but groaned at the stiffness in her body.

“Try to keep still. You haven’t broken anything but you must have bumped into things while you were underwater as you are quite bruised and have a few cuts on your legs,” said Joey.

“How long was I asleep and is everyone else OK?” asked Jacynta.

“You’ve been asleep since we bought you here yesterday evening. Everyone else is safe and sound and it doesn't even look like anyone will get a cold, you included.”

Jacynta didn’t say anything for a minute. “Well at least I can now say I’ve had a Chalet School adventure. But I really wish I could go home.”

“An adventure you’ve certainly had. Just like in the books.”

“What!” Jacynta was shocked. How could Joey Maynard know about the books?

“The series of books written by Elinor M Brent Dyer that you have been reading since you were a little girl and of which Joey is the main character.”

“You know that you are a character?” Jacynta gasped.

“Well strictly speaking I am not really Joey Maynard but rather a representation of her.”

“Well who are you then? And are you responsible for what has happened to me?”

“Tell me Jacynta. Once you read the books did you always wish you could go to the Chalet School?” said the Joey character.

“Well yes,” said Jacynta. “School life sounded so much fun. No one seemed to really fight and unlike my old school there was no real bitchiness. I liked the idea of learning in three languages. And the adventures. No school has that many adventures and alarms. But it sounded like fun. And,” she said blushing. “I wanted to meet you and Miss Annersley and all the other characters.”

“So what do you think now?”

Jacynta thought for a moment. “It was really scary. No one really listened to me unless I talked about the topics in the books. Life was also a lot harder. I didn’t really get how easy I had it at home.”

“You said you wanted to meet the characters,” said the Joey character. “What did you think of them?”
“They were exactly like in the books. You changing my name and having the new girl party. Len was so helpful and responsible. The Abbesses’’ voice, Miss Wilmot and the maths. And Mary-Lou always there but she seemed so bossy.”

“So I did well then. They were all as you thought they would be.”

Jacynta nodded in agreement. “Except the one time when Mary-Lou told me off for swearing. She seemed different then.”

“Well that was really me. Actually everyone was really me and I just thought you needed a reminder of what a good Chalet girl should be. Now are you ready to go home?

Jacynta felt dazed. Home, back to hot baths and showers, her Ipod, TV, movies and comfortable clothes. No more watching her words. She found herself nodding her head. “I’m ready. But I think I will miss it thought and I wish I cold have gone to the school when it was in Tyrol.”

Jacynta found the room around her beginning to swirl.

“You really should be careful what you wish for,” she heard Joey say.

“Wait you haven’t told me who you are,” she said.

The next minute Jacynta found herself being greeted by a young woman holding a card with her name on it. “Hello you must be Jacynta. I’m Kim Hamilton, one of the assistant secretaries at the Chalet School.”

Jacynta looked round her She was in an airport. Had it all been a dream then?

“It’s a pity you couldn’t come at the start of term like everyone else. But you’re here now and apart from a few cuts and scraps you look like you’ve recovered well from your accident. Your fairy godmother must have been looking out for you that day.”

“Hi I’m happy to be here, but please call me Jack.”
