Post subject:  Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School Completed 30/10

I actually hadn't intended to write anymore of this as in my mind I knew what had happened. Anyway this came to me today. I don't know how frequently I will be able to update though.

Jacynta, or Jack as she was now known, Fielding sat on her bed and stared round her room. She had arrived back from her final term at the Chalet School in Switzerland, where she had been an exchange student for twelve months, only a couple of hours ago. She had had a brilliant year and couldn’t believe that she was now home and wouldn’t be going back. After Switzerland it was going to be hard to go back to her normal high school but she knew that she was lucky to have had the experience at all.

A person who had read all the books by Elinor Brent-Dyer as they were growing up had founded the Chalet School. The name of the school’s benefactor was a mystery it was run by a corporation. It had been located near Lucerne on the banks of the lake. The school had also had camp locations in Tyrol, Hereford, Wales and Guernsey but Jack hadn’t been to any of these much to her disappointment. The school was run along lines set down in the books but was naturally more modern. One of the main focuses of the school had been languages and after only one year Jack had greatly improved in French and German and she could also speak a bit in various other languages, as the school was so international.

Jack had also read all of the books and had often wished that she could go to the Chalet School, so she had been completely delighted when she had been awarded a scholarship to the school for one year. There had been a complete set of the books in the library and the girls had often talked about how they wished they could have gone to the original school. Jack had found these discussions highly amusing as she had a secret that she could not tell anyone, as they would have thought her totally crazy. At times she thought it was all a dream but the scar on her leg, a legacy of being washed down a swollen stream had convinced her that it had to be true.

At the start of her first term in Switzerland Jack had found herself at the Chalet School of the books in 1950’s Switzerland. She had been so terrified and no one had understood her if she didn’t behave in the way that was expected of a Chalet girl, except on one strange occasion. She still didn’t understand how or why it had happened but Joey Maynard, or someone who appeared to be her, seemed to have been behind it all. She had just started to get used to her life there and had been enjoying herself a little when it had all been over. Jack had only been there just over two weeks before it had all been over. She had enjoyed her year at the other Chalet School immensely but still had moments of wishing she could have gone back even though it had not been at all like she had expected.

“Cyn, dinners ready,” came her mother’s voice. Jack started. It was strange being called Cyn again now she was so used to Jack. It was funny really considering how much she had protested when first given the name by Joey. She headed downstairs and began to set the table.

“Oh Mum, you’ve cooked my favourite,” she said. “Food at school was good but it’s so nice to be home and have your cooking.”

“It’s good to have you home again. Your dad and I have missed you round the house. It has been so quiet.” Mrs Fielding looked at her daughter fondly. The year had done a lot for Jacynta and she had grown up a lot in her year away.

After a dinner in which Jack didn’t stop talking about the Chalet School and her friends her parent’s looked at each other and then her dad said, “ I suppose we should tell her now and then maybe we will get some quiet.”

“Tell me what?” said Jack. Are we going away or something?”

“Cyn darling, how would you like to go back to the Chalet School?” said her mum.

“Go back. You know I’d love it but how? We can’t afford it. I know that,” said Jack hope starting to rise in her.

“Now we can’t but we had a letter from the Chalet School Corporation last week and they said that they are so pleased with the way you have worked in the last year that they want to offer you a scholarship until you have finished school,” said her dad.

“Really!” Jack squealed in delight. “I can go can’t I?” she then asked worriedly looking first at her mum and then at her dad.

“I don’t know,” said her dad. “I think we would miss you too much. It’s been a hard year without you.”

Not sure if her dad was joking or not Jack looked at her mum but her face was serious too. Then both faces split into a grin and her dad said, “Yes you can go.”

Jack hugged both of her parents and then dashed upstairs saying that she had to message her friends to tell them she would be back.

The rest of the holidays seemed to go so slowly. Jack caught up with some of her old friends but she spent much of her time messaging and chatting on Skype, msn or facebook to her Chalet friends. Her mum told her one morning that she would have an opportunity that year to go to one of the camps, which made her day. Jack hoped she would be able to go to the Tyrol one as to her that was where the Chalet School had begun, even if it wasn’t true in real life.

Finally the day came to go back to school. Jack put on uniform. Mot of her luggage had been sent in advance. She travelled with her parent to London and happily met a group of her friends. They chatted nonstop for much of the journey and it was a happy but tired Jack who went to sleep in her small room she shared with one other girl that night. She woke up the next morning and got out of bed and started to shuffle off to the bathroom. Suddenly she was wide-awake as she looked around at her unfamiliar surroundings.

“Oh hell. Where am I now?” she said out loud.

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School

Jack looked round frantically but other than being in a dormitory she was not sure where she was. She didn’t think she was in Switzerland though as the room looked completely different to the ones she had seen there. Tyrol she hoped. But then she had another thought. What if this time she wasn’t in the Chalet School? What if she had ended up in a different series like Malory Towers or the Naughtiest Girl ones? She couldn’t remember that school’s name but she hoped she wasn’t at either of them. The pool at Malory Towers had sounded nice though.

“What do you mean where are you?” came a voice from behind her making her jump. “You’ve been back a few days already so surely you should remember that you are not on holidays any more and are back at school.”

Jack looked at the speaker but didn’t recognise her at all. The girl looked to be a little younger than her and had corn coloured curls, that had been cut short over her head, and blue eyes.

“Come on Jacynta, get moving,” said the girl. “You’re next in the bath and you haven’t even started tidying your cubey and Gill will be back soon.”

The girl obviously knew her and it seemed like she wasn’t a new girl this time. Jack started to stress. This was going to make life a bit more difficult as she would be expected to know what she was doing. And she didn’t even know where or when she was.

The next thing she knew another girl came back and said that she had finished and that it was Jack’s turn. She grabbed her dressing gown and then found the first girl shoving a pile of things in her hand and pushing her out the door.

“Hurry up, I’m after you and I don’t want to get in trouble this early in the term even if you do.”

Jack headed out the door and was able to find a bathroom quickly. Hoping it was the right one she slipped in and found a bath running for her. She quickly turned of the taps and dipped her finger in the water and found it to be stone cold. That at least solved one question for her. She knew that she was at the Chalet School. Now if she could just work out when she was. She quickly washed and was towelling off when there came banging at the door. Jack quickly pulled the plug out of the bath dragged her dressing gown on again and then set the bath running again. She murmured sorry to the girl at the door and began to head back to her dormitory.

Jack quickly ran into trouble. Once out of the bathroom she realised that because she had left the dormitory so fast so had no real idea of where it was. She started to stick her head into different rooms. One room seemed to have mainly little girls in there and when she stuck her head into another they told her that Matey was on the prowl and she should stop mucking around before she was caught. It was too late though.

“Jacynta Fielding,” came a voice that she actually knew. “What are you doing?”

Jack found herself face to face with Matron. She looked a little younger than she remembered from last year but otherwise she was still the same Matron.

“Umm,” was all that Jack managed to get out.

“Hurry and go back to your dormitory and get dressed. We have enough trouble at the moment without you playing silly games.”

“Sorry Matron,” said Jack. Then as she was looking round she spotted the girl from earlier heading back from her bath and quickly moved to walk with her. The girl gave her a surprised look but said nothing. Jacynta found her cubicle again and quickly began to get dressed. She pulled on a brown uniform and looked down at herself. “Not Switzerland then,” she thought. Jack then proceeded to strip her bed quickly and tidy her cubicle. She was the last to join the line of girls waiting at the door and everyone was giving her irritated looks as she joined them.

“Now we are all ready let’s go,” said another very pretty girl. “Let’s just hope Miss Bubb isn’t there yet.”

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School Updated 7/10

Jack thought furiously as the girls made their way down to breakfast silently. She couldn’t believe that of all the terms that she had ended up in the one with Miss Bubb as head. She also thought that the girl who had helped her out had to be Gay Lambert but she thought she would be careful until she was sure. Unlike last time she wasn’t as terrified by what had happened. She actually felt quite thrilled. She knew the storyline of this book well as it was a particular favourite of hers, although she knew that it would be different to live in this time rather than just reading about it. Jack was also pretty sure she wouldn’t be stuck here forever and this time she decided that she would try to have as much fun as possible.

The atmosphere at breakfast was very interesting. Many of the girls seemed to be either subdued or talking angrily about something. At the staff table the mistresses were quiet and had worried expressions on their faces. They kept looking over the girls anxiously and then having quiet conversations with each other. One young mistress, in particular looked upset.

From the conversations going on around her Jack quickly figured out that the girls had just found out about new team edict of Miss Bubb’s and the new restrictions put in place about their free time. Jack didn’t participate in the conversations as she spent most of her time trying to put names to the faces of the girls around her. As she obviously wasn’t new here it was going to look at bit strange if she didn’t know anyone. She quickly discovered that she was right about it being Gay and by the end of the meal, which was nowhere near as good as the ones she had eaten in Switzerland the previous year, she had also worked out who Daisy, Gwensi, Beth, Jacynth, Gillian and Frances were. It looked as though she was in the fifth form here. She looked at Jacynth out of the corner of her eyes not wanting to be caught staring. It was going to be so hard to be around her and not be able to say anything about what she knew was going to happen.

Jack was lost deep in thought thinking about how she was going to have to try and see Joey when Gay pulled her to her feet. “What’s got into you this morning Jack?” Gay asked. “What’s so important that you’ve decided to ignore us all breakfast? Thought you would have been discussing the games thing and the free time thing with us all again. You were mad enough about it all yesterday.”

“Oh those things,” said Jack.

Gay’s eyebrows rose at this but luckily for her they were running late for prayers so Gay didn’t say more and the pair hurried in with the others to take their places. But once prayers were finished she turned to Jack and asked her again what was up this morning.

“I didn’t sleep very well last night and guess I just feel a bit tired,” Jack replied hoping Gay would put her mood down to grumpiness.

“Not surprised you didn’t sleep well. You were so angry. And then you got your detention when Monica heard you holding forth in the most unparliamentarily language about it all,” said Gay looking at her sympathetically. “I was just lucky that she didn’t hear me.”

“I don't know who was worse, you or Jack,” said Gill. “You both looked like you were going to explode Miss Bubb’s study last night. As for Monica, I guess she was annoyed about the whole thing herself considering she is games pree.” At this point Gill Culver gave a squawk. “Do you lot realise that we are all going to be late for class if we don’t get a move on?”

Jack stuck close to the pair and they headed off for their form room, which she discovered, was lower fifth. She had been in lower fifth last year too when she had ended up in Switzerland. They had just managed to sit down when Miss Bubb herself walked in. She eyed the class and on spotting Jack’s desk asked her in an icy tone why she wasn’t ready for lessons yet. As half the class didn’t have their books out yet Jack felt it was a bit unfair to pick on only her.

“I’m waiting for your answer Jacynta. Why are you not ready for class,” said Miss Bubb in a metallic voice.

Jack looked at the women. She was quite tall and broad shouldered and had grey hair and blue eyes. The eyes were gazing at Jack in a way that made her uneasy.
“Jacynta Fielding. When I ask you a question I expect an answer,” Miss Bubb said her voice becoming even colder.

“I’m sorry. I was running late,” said Jack.

“That is no real explanation. Next time make sure you are ready in plenty of time. Now hurry up sit down and take out your books quickly and quietly. And I hope you can show me better work than your abysmal effort yesterday.”

Jack sat down with her cheeks red. She opened up her desk and looked through it. She had no idea what books she needed. Her temper started to rise. She found her timetable pinned to the underside of the desk, discovered it was time for Latin and was still hunting round for the appropriate books when she heard Miss Bubb’s voice again.

“We are still waiting. I think we will have to make up this time after class.”

Jack finally found the appropriate books and shut the lid of her desk with a small bang. “You old bat,” she said. “At least I know you aren’t going to be here long.”

Gasps, quickly smothered, told Jack that she had been overheard. She kept her eyes down and hoped that Miss Bubb had not heard as well. But then the heads voice rang out.

“Jacynta Fielding. You will leave the room this instant. You can stand in the corridor until the end of this lesson and then you will come with me to my study.”

Jack stood up and made her way out of the room. She stood out in the corridor and thought about sitting down but thought that might be pushing it a bit far. It seemed to be different this time, unless it was like that strange time with Mary-Lou. She listened to the lesson progressing inside the room. Miss Bubb’s voice rang out angrily time after time and no one seemed to be faring very well at all. Jack miserably wished that she were back at her Chalet School. She had been her less than a day and it already looked like she was going to be in serious trouble.

The bell rang out for the end of the lesson. Miss Bubb appeared to take no notice and continued on. Then Jack spotted Joey Maynard coming down the corridor. She was just about to call out to her when Miss Bubb appeared at her side.

“Follow me,” she said curtly.

Jack saw Joey give her a sympathetic look but she had now choice now but to follow the head into her study. Jack stood in front of the desk and looked at the mistress as she sat down. The silence in the study seemed to go on forever and Jack squirmed under the Miss Bubb’s gaze.

“Well I am waiting to hear you explain your outrageous rudeness,” Miss Bubb finally said.

Jack said nothing. She was extremely unsure of herself. She had no real idea if Miss Bubb had actually heard what she had said or if she had heard something more in line with keeping on script. She finally decided that she should just say what she thought. If it were like last time Miss Bubb wouldn’t hear what she actually said anyway. She opened her mouth to speak but before she could get any words out Miss Bubb spoke again.

“I asked you a question. You will do me the courtesy of replying.”

“Well you’re not going to be here very long are you,” Jack said. She decided to leave out the old bat part of her earlier statement just in case.

Miss Bubb’s face went very red when she heard this. “I understand your parents are overseas and are unable to return home at the moment and that you are devoid of any other relatives. This is just as well for you. If I could I would be ringing your parents and telling them about your unbelievable rudeness. I don’t know how they have bought you up but I am presuming they have told you that you should not speak to a mistress this way. I am currently the head of this establishment and intend to be for a good while longer.”

Jack studied her feet. It seemed as though Miss Bubb had heard exactly what she had said.

“Look at me. Do you have anything else to say?”

Jack raised her head slowly and said the only thing she could think of, “I’m sorry.”

Miss Bubb looked at her thoughtfully. “I don't think you really are, but in a week you may mean it. For the next week you will be separate from everyone else. You will do your lessons here in my office or you will sit in the back of whatever classroom I am in and do your work there. You will go to bed in the sanatorium directly after your lessons each day and you may talk to no other students or staff members. I will arrange it so that you have work for each lesson and for exercise you will walk behind me on my morning walk.”

Jack could barely hold back her tears. She was to be with this woman for a week. She struggled to listen as Miss Bubb continued.

“If I am busy in my office I will place a desk just outside my door so I can keep an eye on you. You have to have plain food all week. No cakes or jam. You are to spend your free time contemplating your behaviour. If you cannot apologise appropriately by the end of the week you will spend the following week with me as well. Do you understand me?”

Jack nodded her head in response, as she didn’t trust herself to speak.

“Now I will ring for Matron to come and collect you. You will spend the rest of the day in bed after you have written a letter to your parents explaining your behaviour. I will be reading the letter and will arrange for it to be sent as I will also be including a letter,” said Miss Bubb. She rang a small bell on her desk and Miss Dene appeared. Miss Bubb explained the arrangement to Miss Dene and asked her to arrange for Matron to come down. Jacynta stood in silence until Matron appeared. She was following the small wiry woman out of the study when Miss Bubb spoke again.

“You need to be very careful what you say Miss Fielding.”

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School Updated 10/10

The next week was the worst week in Jack’s life and this included last year when she had been at the Chalet School in Switzerland and had been completely scared. Miss Bubb seemed to suck out all the joy of life and Jack was with her from the moment she got up until the moment she was sent to bed after her lessons had finished for the day. When she wasn’t in Miss Bubb’s study working she was seated at a small desk just outside the door and she watched people go into the study and then come out again looking even more depressed than before they went in. Jack decided that she was like a Dementor from Harry Potter because no one could feel happy round her.

Miss Bubb came to fetch her first thing in the morning for a quick walk around the garden but then she was sent back to the san for a solitary breakfast. All her other meals were also taken by herself in the san and Miss Bubb had been true to her word. The meals were very bland and sparse and by the end of the third day Jack had to force herself to eat them. Jack overhead Matron talking to someone outside the san on the fourth night when she couldn’t sleep about how Miss Bubb inspected of the trays of food before it went in.

“It’s a pity Jack Maynard is away,” she heard Matron say. “He would soon put a stop to this. If the girl is still being fed like this when he comes home I’ll get him up. He and Jo in loco parentis while her parents are away. Jo is already horrified but Miss Bubb wouldn’t listen to her and Madge and Jem are still too worried by Josette. Jacynta is in no real danger yet but she is looking paler and paler and she will get sick if this carries on for over a week as Miss Bubb had threatened.”

Jack heard no more as Matron and whomever she was speaking to moved away at this point. But she lay there thinking. Joey and Jack Maynard were apparently her guardians with her parent out of the country. She really had to try and talk to Jo Maynard. But for the moment it looked like she was stuck here.

It was a lonely week. Miss Bubb barely spoke to her at any time and had evidently told everyone else that they were not to talk to her. Even Matron had been rebuked when she had asked Jack if she was alright as she thought she looked a little pale. Jack completed all the schoolwork she was given and she had to work hard. Miss Bubb had warned her that if any of her work was not up to standard that she would have to repeat it. She had written the letter to her parents but she hoped they wouldn’t actually receive it like they did her letter last year. They would be so disappointed in her.

In the evenings Jack was sent to bed and had time to do nothing but think. Why had she been sent to this time? How long was it going to be before Bill was going to return? She knew that it was before half term but no actual time period had been specified in the book. The Bubbinator, as Jack had dubbed her, seemed to know something but Jack knew there would be no point in asking her. She caught glimpses of Joey Maynard but she seemed to be avoiding Miss Bubb. Jack received sympathetic looks from both the students and the staff who she came into contact with. She received a shock one day when Rosalie Dene dropped a small piece of candy on her desk with a hurried whisper to hide it quickly. The long monotonous days took their toll on Jack and by the time that long long week was over she more than ready to apologise. She had a headache that wouldn’t go away and was pale and listless.

Jack was called into the study and she meekly apologised for her statement the previous week and faithfully promised that she would never behave like that again. She said that she knew that she had been rude and inappropriate. Miss Bubb accepted her apology and told her that she could return to her form the following morning but warned her that she would be keeping an eye on her. Jack was sent back up to the san that night but she found a much nicer meal waiting for her. She went to sleep that night feeling excited about the prospect of joining the others the next day. She would try and get hold of Joey Maynard and talk to her and she also had a plan that she wanted to put to all the fifth years. A plan that she had been thinking about for the last week and that she hoped she would be able to pull off.

Jack woke early the next morning and got ready quickly eager to get down to breakfast. She had been here a week now and due to her isolation still knew very little about her environment and the girls she was with. She would have to be careful, as she was sure Miss Bubb would be watching her. Jack was the first person in the dining room and when her form saw her sitting there they hurried over to greet her noisily saying they were pleased she was back with them.

The friendly company and the still plain but infinitely more delicious food made Jack feel quite content. She found the group she was with all to be very natural and down to earth. They filled her in on what they had been up to for the last week and listened to her sorry tale of the last week.

“You were right Jack,” said Gay. “She is an old bat.”

“I know she is but don’t let her hear you say that. I wouldn’t wish what I’ve been through on my worst enemy. It’s not fun spending time with the Bubbinator.”

“The what?” exclaimed half the girls sitting around the table.

“The Bubbinator,” said Jack thinking quickly. “Umm…. I read this book once, but I don't remember what it’s called, so don’t ask about this thing called a Terminator that went round ending things it didn’t like. Miss Bubb seems to be trying to end all that we like and it just came into my head. It wasn’t a very good book but I was on holidays and it was the only thing I could find. Mum hit the roof when she saw me reading it and said it was completely inappropriate.”

“The Bubbinator. I like it,” said Gay. “She’s certainly trying to end all our customs here. Did you know we have to show all our written prep to the mistress or prefect in charge now?”

“And if our marks are too low we have to see the head,” continued on Gill.

“No. I’ve barely seen anyone in the last week. And I got sent to bed before any of us are allowed to go the study between her set hours.”

The bell rang at this point and the girls cleared their plates and made their way to the hall for prayers. After that had finished the made their way to their form room and Jack groaned to herself when she realised the first lesson for the day was Latin. But when Miss Bubb entered the room she was ready with all her books out. Miss Bubb glanced her way once but for the rest of the lesson left her alone. Maths was next and again Jack kept her head down and worked hard.

It was during break that Jack revealed her plan to the others. Both fifth forms were together. “Have you all heard of the Matron that locked Robin up?” she asked.

“Have I ever,” said Daisy. “Jo still gets angry when she tells us that story.”

“Is that the Matron that caused so much trouble when Jo was head girl?” asked Frances.

“No that was Matron Besly,” said Daisy. “You’re talking about Matron Webb aren’t you Jack?”

“Yes. It was in the early days of the series, I mean school,” Jack said quickly. “Anyway someone, Margia Stevens or Evadne maybe started a secret group against her.”

“The SSM,” said Daisy. “And they did it gain for Matron Besly.”

“I’d forgotten that,” said Jack. “Anyway I think we should revive it. But it will have to be the SSB now.”

“The Society for the Suppression for Miss Bubb,” said Daisy. “I don’t know. We are seniors.”

“I don’t care,” said Jack. “After what she put me through this last week she deserves everything she gets.”

“I agree. Nothing is the same with her here. She forgets this my house,” said Gwensi. “She caught me coming out of my bedroom when I went to get something the other day. Miss Slater had told me I could. But Miss Bubb wouldn’t listen to my excuses and told me I was forbidden from going in there again.” Gwensi had a hot temper and Miss Bubb’s treatment of her and rankled.

“We’d have to be careful though,” said Beth.

“Can we do the snail thing?” asked Gay.

Suggestions started to come quickly after this. To Gay’s disappointment the snail thing was voted out. “Too many people have heard of it.”

“It doesn’t work anyway,” said Jack. A friend and I tried it at my last school and nothing happened. Maybe you need a special type of snail or something.”

The bell went for the end of break at this point. “We’ll continue this discussion later,” said Beth. I think it’s a good idea but we will have to be really careful. Whatever else she may be the Bubbinator is not an idiot.”

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School Updated 12/10

The rest of the day passed smoothly. Some of the staff noticed that the fifth forms seemed to have some sort of secret but were not overly concerned because as Miss Slater put it, “They are seniors and can be expected to have some sort of sense. If it was the middles though…” She didn’t have to finish her sentence as everyone knew exactly what she meant.

Jack didn’t come across Miss Bubb again for the rest of the day, which was a great relief for her. She enjoyed getting to know the girls in the fifth form more. It was hard though. It was completely different to the previous year as they all seemed to know her and once or twice she received a strange look from someone when she didn’t respond in the expected manner. A couple of times she went the wrong way and had to be hauled back by Gay or Gill. Although she seemed to be friendly with most people it looked as though Gay and Gill were her special chums.

After prep that night when they had free time the two fifths called a meeting out in the garden. They didn’t want to be in the common room as members of the sixths would be in there as well and they were sure would not allow them to go ahead with their plans.

Daisy called the meeting to order. “OK so you know why we are all here. Miss Bubb is trying to change our school and we don’t like it. We can’t bother Madame at the moment as she is so taken up with Josette.”

The girl’s faces grew grave at this. They knew the little girl was getting better but there was still so much to worry about.”

“Anyway,” continued on Gwensi. “We have to do something to get rid of her. We don’t know when Bill or the others are coming back and the Abbess won’t be back for ages so it’s up to us. This is my house and I don’t want her here. Do you know what she wanted to do today?” Gwensi’s voice rose in indignation as she got towards the end of her speech.

“What?” came half a dozen voices.

“She wanted to whitewash the lower half of all the windows and then she told me off for impertinence when I said that my brother wouldn’t like it.”

“She would,” said Jack. “Anyway has anyone had any ideas of what we can do?”

There was silence and then someone suggested mixing her sugar with salt. This was cried down quickly as being too obvious.

“As I said earlier we will have to be subtle. She will be on to us like a shot if we did something like that,’ said Beth.

“Something like what?” came a voice from behind them.
The entire fifth jumped as Joey Maynard came up to them.

“You lot look awfully guilty about something,” she said.

“We were just discussing Jack’s week with Miss Bubb,” said Daisy quickly.

“Actually it was Jack I was coming to see,” said Jo. “Matron said something about you being rather pale the other day. I tried to see you but Miss Bubb was having none of it. Tomorrow being Saturday I was hoping you could come to tea. Daisy you can come too if you wish.”

Jack eagerly accepted the offer. It would hopefully give her the chance she needed to talk with Jo.

“Just don’t call Miss Bubb any more names. I had a hard time talking her into letting you come. She doesn’t think you deserve it after what you did last week.”

Jack promised that she wouldn’t and Jo then left saying she wanted to get home.

The fifths all started talking again but no one could come up with any decent ideas. Everything was voted down as too obvious, too boring or it had been done before.

Jack was enjoying herself immensely. This was the Chalet School she had read about. The awful previous week was almost forgotten as she eagerly discussed ways in which they could suppress Miss Bubb. Nothing was achieved in the way of plans by the time they went to bed that night but everyone promised to think about it and they would try to meet again over the weekend to come up with something. Jack had a germ of an idea but she wanted to think it through first.

She woke early the next morning and spent the morning in Guides with everyone else. This was something completely new to her, but she really enjoyed it. The fifths whispered amongst themselves about the SSB but they didn’t really have the chance to talk and before Jack knew it she was heading off with Daisy towards the Maynards. To their surprise they were met Jo at the front door.

“I have some extra petrol this week so I thought I would come and pick you up. That way we can be away quickly just in case Miss Bubb changes her mind.”

Jack and Daisy scrambled into the car. Jo gave Jack a long look and then said, “Well you don’t look pale to me. But Jack, my Jack that is, wants to check you out just to be sure. He should be home later. By the way the triplets are dying to see both of you. They were very annoyed when you didn’t come last week Jack with all the new girls.”

Jack started. She had not thought about the triplets. It would be funny seeing Len as a child. Last year she had been her sheepdog. She had been kind and helpful to Jack in a time in which she had been totally bewildered. Jo and Daisy chattered for the short drive but Jack sat silently. Would she get any answers while she was here? Jo had so far given her no indication that she knew anything.

Jo pulled up in front of the house with a jolt and told Daisy and Jack to go inside. As they entered the house three little girls crowded around them chatting as hard as they could. Jo entered behind them and laughingly asked why they were not waiting in the nursery like she had asked them to do. The faces of the three fell. But Joey just told them to take Jack up to the nursery with them and to play with La Maison des Poupées while she had a quick chat with Daisy.

“I’ll talk to you later Jack,” she called after them as Jack found herself almost pulled up the stairs. She spent the next hour happily playing with the triplets who gave her no chance to think. She had no difficulty telling the three apart. Len tried to lead them and she was the one who told Margot off when that young lady started to have a temper tantrum when the others wouldn’t do what she wanted. Con was the one who made up the stories about the dolls. For the first time since she had arrived in this time Jack felt as though things were playing out along script lines. The triplets were behaving exactly as they had been written.

Daisy came upstairs to call them down for tea. As Jack came into the room Jo apologised.

“Sorry it’s pretty plain fare today. I used up most of the stuff I had been saving last week when everyone came. You’ll have to help me clean up though. Anna’s gone out now I’m home.”

Jack told Jo it didn’t matter and as they ate they chatted about how things were going at school.

“I’m worried,” Jo confided in them. “Madge is so caught up with Josette and has no time for the school. Josette is getting better but it’s going to take time. Miss Bubb seems to be causing a lot of people anxiety.”

“She certainly is different,” said Daisy. “Have you heard anything about Miss Annersley Jo?”

Jo’s face grew grave. “She is stronger but it’s still serious. Both Jack and Jem have been calling the hospital regularly but we still don’t know how long she will be there. It’s going to take her a long time to recover from this.”

“We all miss her so much. It’s not the same at school without her. and Miss Bubb is trying to change everything.”

“She’s an old bat,” came a small voice.

“Margot Maynard! What did you say?”

“She’s an old bat. I heard you tell Daddy that’s what Jack called her and you said you fought she was too.”

Jack started to choke and her face went red. Daisy leaned over and patted her on the back. She took a big sip of her drink.

Jo proceeded to thoroughly tell off the youngest triplet. “Margot you know you are not allowed to repeat things that I tell your father. Both your father and I are adults and may sometimes say things that are not for little girls to say. Jack was very rude to Miss Bubb and she got into a lot of trouble over the incident.”

Margot slid down in her chair with a sulky expression on her face. Jo said nothing more to her but changed the conversation to ask Jack if she had heard from her parents recently.

“No, but I was made to write a letter to them by Miss Bubb explaining my rudeness,” said Jack.

“I don’t think they will be pleased. It’s unlike you to be rude. What were you thinking?”

Jack didn’t know what to say. She didn’t want to say in front of Daisy and the triplets that she had woken up in a new time and had been confused. She needed to get Jo alone. Fortunately as she was thinking Daisy came to her rescue.

“Jo, I think I’ll take these three to wash up. They seem to have been bathing in the jam.”

“Thanks Daisy. I’ll get Jack to help me clear up.”

After Daisy and the triplets left the room Jo and Jack started to clear the table.

“Jack you know you can talk to me if there is anything troubling you don’t you. I know it’s hard for you with your parents so far away.”

Jack looked at Jo as she considered what to say. Was there a double meaning behind her words?

“It’s so different this time. Last time no one heard me if I went off script but this time everyone seems to hear everything I say.”

“Jack what nonsense are you talking? I don’t understand what you mean. Is the fifth form putting on some sort of play?”

Jack stared at Jo. She had been certain that Jo would provide her with answers. Now she wasn’t so sure.

“I guess it’s just been a tough week. I don’t really know what I mean,” she finally said.
“Miss Bubb seems to have it in for me.”
“Well just hang in there. Nothing lasts forever. Miss Wilson will hopefully be back after half term and things should change then.”

They cleaned up the rest in silence and then Jack went back upstairs to say goodbye to the triplets. The three had changed into their pyjamas and were listening as Daisy told them a story. By the time the story had finished they were fast asleep.

They found Jo at the bottom of the stairs looking a bit worried.

“Daisy do you think you two can walk back to school? Anna has just phone and she’s been held up. I don’t really want to take the triplets out now.”

“They’re asleep anyway,” said Daisy. “don’t look so worried Jo. We’ll be fine to walk. It’s not dark yet anyway and I think the moon will be bright enough.”

After saying goodbye to Jo the pair set off. It was a pleasant enough evening and they had no difficulty finding their way back. They arrived back at school and were met by Gwensi as they were changing their shoes.

“Miss Bubb is looking for you Jack and she is extremely angry.”

Post subject:  Re: Jacynta goes back to the Chalet School Updated 20/10

“Why on earth should she be angry with me,” demanded Jack of Gwensi. “I haven’t done anything and I have been at the Maynard’s all afternoon with Daisy.”

“No idea. She just said she wanted to see you as soon as you got back and she was not at all pleasant about it,” Gwensi replied. “You’d better head off there straight away.”

“I’ll come with you,” said Daisy supportively.

“Thanks,” said Jack with a gloomy expression. She changed her shoes quickly and after checking to make sure that she looked reasonably tidy headed off with Daisy to the study. They saw Rosalie Dean still at her desk looking very tired. They went to speak to her but before they could get a word out Miss Bubb appeared.

“So you are finally back Miss Fielding,” she said in angry tones. “I don’t remember giving you permission to leave the school.”

Jack bit back her first retort which was decidedly un-Chalet like. She was so sick of this woman who had seemed to have such a grudge against her. She wished that she had come her despite her liking for all the girls in this era. “I’m sorry but Mrs Maynard told me that you had given her permission for us to go to tea.”

“Mrs Maynard is not in charge of this school. I am. Mrs Maynard may have asked me but I also expected you to ask as well.”

“I’m sorry Miss Bubb. Next time I’ll come and ask your permission,” said Jack in her most apologetic tone.

Daisy also apologised but Miss Bubb did not appear to notice her and continued to address Jack as though Daisy wasn’t there.

“Also please remember that anytime you wish to leave the school you must report to the study before you leave and after you come back. You did not report to me before you left today.”

Jack didn’t know what to say, but anger began to build up inside her. This woman was speaking to her like she was a young child. She wondered what her punishment was to be this time. Two weeks in isolation maybe. She merely repeated that she was sorry and that it wouldn’t happen again.

“I accept your apology for today and will be having words with Mrs Maynard. You may leave but you are to go to bed immediately. Dismissed.” And with those words Miss Bubb picked up a pen and began to look at the papers on her desk.

Jack stood there for a second and then felt Daisy pulling on her arm. They left the study and made their way down the hall. At the senior common room they paused.
“I’ll talk to you tomorrow. You’d better go or she’ll have you back in her study again in the morning,” said Daisy.

Jack agreed and made her way to her dorm, she washed and changed and then lay in bed. Matey popped in once and nodded when she saw her there but didn’t say anything. Jack wasn’t at all tired and lay there thinking. The day had been disappointing and she hadn’t got any of the answers that she had thought she would get. She supposed that she would find out why she was here sometime. Meanwhile something had to be done about Miss Bubb. Jack knew that she wasn’t going to last at the school long but she wanted to have some revenge on her before either she or Miss Bubb left.

Jack lay awake long after all the others came up to bed and when she finally fell asleep it was to have dreams filled with Miss Bubb following her around telling her off for everything that she did. At breakfast the next morning she let the others know that she wanted to have a meeting of the SSB as soon as possible. She spent her time in church thinking about her plan and finally after lunch the two fifth forms retreated to a secluded area of the garden.

Daisy had obviously told the other what had happened in the study when they returned.

“It’s weird. She didn’t even acknowledge my presence. I hadn’t reported to the study either but I didn’t get in trouble,” Daisy said.

“We need to do something but what?” asked Frances.

“I wasn’t sure if we should do something before,” said Beth. “But the way she is treating Jack is not on. Come on ideas people.”

“You know how everyone has to go and see her if our marks are too low,” said Gwensi. “How about we all do so badly that she has masses of people to see. She really doesn’t like people going to her study so this would take up heaps of her time.”

Quite a few people’s face fell at this idea. They would not only have to face Miss Bubb’s wrath with this idea but the thought of the telling off they would receive from the other mistresses if their work declined so badly would not be fun.

“Let’s try and come up with something else,” said Beth. “We’ll leave that one on the back burner for the moment.”

“A hunger strike?” suggested someone.

“Do you want to face Matey?” asked Daisy with a grin.

“Pretending we can’t hear her.”

“No ink in the ink wells.”

Jack listened to the ideas coming forth. She still wasn’t sure about her own idea but thought she should put it to the group. They listened eagerly as she explained what she thought they could do and then after a few modifications they had a plan that they would set in motion the following day..

The next few days passed by in relative calm for Jack. Miss Bubb seemed to have forgotten about her for the moment and have moved on to tormenting Gwensi. She was now picking up Gwensi for any little thing that she perceived as being wrong. The rest of the fifth watched Gwensi getting more and more upset and they became more and more indignant with the head’s behaviour. The SSB had a few more meetings to discuss their plan and a few of the more hotheaded members of the fifth had to be restrained from doing something rash.

Miss Bubb had a few uneasy days. She was sure the fifth form were up to something but she couldn’t work out what. She was aware of them looking at her at odd times but there was nothing she could pull them up for. There seemed to always be queues of them at her office in the evening asking for her permission to participate in various activities. She declined the majority of the requests but they thanked her politely for listening to them as they left the study. But then something happened that made the fifth form fly out of her mind completely.

I'm wondering if Miss Bubb is aware Jack isn't meant to be there. Gwensi, I kind of understand as she did stop Miss Bubb from whitewashing the windows

Miss Bubb is behaving very oddly here - another one who can't help wondering whether she knows something about Jack.

I'm so glad that you brought Jacynta back to the school - I hope that she manages to sort out Miss Bubb and gets some of Miss Wilson and even Miss Annersley's regime when she returns. Thanks - I'm enjoying this.

Thanks for all the comments. Gwensi was picked on by Miss Bubb in the original story so I thought I would just continue it on.

No one knew who told the girls but the news went round the school like wildfire. Bill was back. Many of the girls hung round the windows at break expecting to see Miss Bubb departing with suitcases in hand but they were sorely disappointed and then got in trouble for being late. At lunch Miss Wilson received a round of applause from all the girls, which the staff joined in heartily. Anyone caring to look at Miss Bubb during this time would see that she had her lips pursed and looked angry. Joey Maynard was seen giving dark looks towards the head while Miss Wilson looked around the room with a thoughtful expression on her face.

Jack for her part was relieved to see Miss Wilson. She hadn’t met her before through her knowledge of the books felt she knew her quite well. She also knew that her arrival meant the beginning of the end for Miss Bubb. But this did not endear her to the lady any more. Using her knowledge of the book, Jack leaned towards her neighbour and whispered to her that she had overheard the maids talking about how Miss Bubb had not let Jo go the Stephen when he was crying, that she had called Jo rude to Miss Wilson and that Jo had threatened to quit. By the end of lunch even Miss Bubb was aware of the looks the girls were giving her. As the girls left the room nearly every student welcomed Miss Wilson back while firmly turning their backs on Miss Bubb. Miss Wilson on her part did not miss a thing.

Jack and the fifth forms gathered together quickly after lunch. They agreed to suspend SSB operations for the moment as they thought Miss Bubb would soon be leaving and they were worried about Bill working out what they were up to.

“She looks tired and thin,” commented Daisy. “We need to give her our support.”

The rest of the fifths agreed to try and do nothing to upset Miss Bubb for the moment but they all decided to show her how much they supported Miss Wilson.

Don’t think it will help me though,” said Gwensi gloomily. “Don’t think I’ll ever be able to do anything to please the old bat. Same goes for you Jack.”

Despite her gloom Gwensi found herself in no more trouble than anyone else for the next couple of days. Miss Bubb seemed to be treading carefully. She could not mistake the school’s antipathy towards her though. The fifth forms made a point of being exceeding caring and thoughtful towards Miss Wilson. They opened doors for her, were always available to run messages and always had a ready grin for her. Towards Miss Bubb they were what could only be termed as chillingly polite. Miss Bubb was not ready to let go of the reins though.

Jack watched the state of affairs within the school with glee. Miss Bubb was ignoring her at the moment and life was getting better. She still spent much time wondering why she was here and who could help her but for the moment all she really cared about was ousting Miss Bubb. Jack encouraged Gay to give cello lessons to Jacynth whenever she could in the hope of speeding up the row she knew was to come between Gay and Miss Bubb. She sat in and listened to a couple of lessons and saw for herself how easily playing the cello came to Jacynth.

When the news broke that Gay and Jacynth had been sent to bed for rudeness Jack was as indignant as the rest of the fifth. All were in agreement that Madame or Miss Annersley would have done everything in their power to help Jacynth. On a Sunday afternoon when it was too hot to go for a walk Jack found herself helping to carry out tea things to a secluded spot on the lawn with a group that included Gay, Gill and Jacnyth. Jack was happily listening to a tale of Gay’s life in China when a very angry Miss Bubb who scolded Gay for having her cello outside interrupted them.

Gay lost no time in telling everyone how Dr. Maynard had refused to listen to Miss Bubb when he had vetoed her order to send Gay to bed. Every student started to dread their Latin classes and all students found their work heavily criticised. Jack had been called to her study the day after the incident and Miss Bubb had warned her that she would tolerate no more bad behaviour from her.

“Lounging about on the lawn in an unladylike manner and encouraging Gay Lambert to take her cello outside is simply not acceptable behaviour.”

Jack tried to reply that she had done no such thing but she was told off for impertinence and given lines to write. She made no further protests but left the study seething with rage. She sat down with Gay and the pair of them aired their woes against Miss Bubb in loud voices until Gill and Jacynth convinced them to be quiet. Jack was not sure how much longer she would be able to control her temper when Miss Bubb was around and she waited anxiously for a certain letter to arrive for Gay.

Despite knowing what was in store for her friend and feeling sympathy for the punishment that she knew was going to follow Jack encouraged Gay to see Miss Bubb when the letter did arrive. When Gay arrived to tell them that she was running away Jack offered to walk with her to the station.

“Thanks for the offer but you’re in enough trouble as I am. You wouldn’t make it back in time for breakfast.”

“Well what about halfway then,” Jack replied.

The two girls set out together and Gay was pleased to have company for that first part of the walk. Gay told Jack more about her life in China. Jack had always been disappointed by the fact that more of Gay’s story had not been revealed in the books. It was like there had been a missing book. On her way back to the school Jack had time for nothing but thoughts. Miss Bubb’s reign at the Chalet School was now at an end. But how long would she be there for?

Jack enjoyed her walk back to school but she was famished by the time she arrived back. She was quietly slipping in the door when a voice beside her made her jump.

“Jacynta Fielding. Please go to my study immediately to explain the meaning of this.”

A maid who was standing nearby gave Jack a look of sympathy. She made her way to the study miserably wondering how much Miss Bubb knew and if Gay’s escapade was going to come to an abrupt end. She stopped in front of the desk and waited for the head to speak.

“So Jack, did she get away OK then?”

Jack’s jaw dropped open. Of all the things she thought Miss Bubb would say this one hadn’t even made the list. She just stared t the mistress and noted that she looked different somehow.

“It was good to see you stand by your friend.”

Even the voice was different. It was kinder and less harsh. Her eyes had a twinkle in them and she was smiling in a way that Jack had never thought she would see. This Miss Bubb actually looked friendly.

“Why?” Jack finally managed to say.

“Why what?”

“Why are I am here?”

There was a pause for a moment. “I told you last time that you have to be careful about what you wished for.”

“You didn’t tell me. It was Joey who told me,” said Jack.

“But I am Joey,” Miss Bubb replied.

Jack looked at the Miss Bubb with a puzzled expression on her face.

“I am everyone. I thought you understood that.” Seeing that Jack really did not understand her Miss Bubb sighed. “I made this world for you. I gave you what you wished for.”

“I wished for this?”

”Not exactly. But you can’t have exactly what you wish for. I have to have some fun too,” said Miss Bubb. “You always wished you could meet Gay and hear her story did you not.”

“Yes, but....” said Jack.

“And haven’t you always wished you could meet Daisy, Gwensi and Co?” Miss Bubb continued.

“Yes, but....”

“And didn’t you always enjoy the stories where the students got the upper hand against the Matrons?”

“Yes,” said Jack wondering where all this was leading.

“Well I could give you all of that in this time. What mistress in the entire series was reviled as much as me? You know Gay’s story and you have had fun with all the characters you enjoyed so much.”

“But why were you so horrible to me?” Jack asked.

“Why not. It was my way of giving you something else new. You have never really been in trouble at school have you? Thought I’d just give you a taste of what it was like to be a bad girl,” said Miss Bubb laughing.

“But that wasn’t fair. I never really did anything wrong,” Jack replied with a touch of anger in her voice.

“Not strictly true. You did call me an old bat. Anyway life isn’t always fair. Now it’s time for you to go leave here now and go and have breakfast. Today is going to be rather interesting. I’ll see you later no doubt.”

Jack made to leave the study. As she got to the door she turned round and asked a final question. “Who are you really?”

“Well that would be telling wouldn’t it? Now please leave before I have to punish you again.”

Jack made her way out of the study and made her way to the dining room. As she entered the room changed around her and she found herself in the dining room of her Chalet School in Switzerland. She blinked quickly unsure if what she was seeing was correct. The image stayed and she saw her friends at their table. As she made her way towards them she heard a small voice in her ear.

“That was fun. Maybe we should do it again someday.”

Jack gave a wave as she made her way towards her friends. It seemed a lifetime ago that she had seen them. She was going to miss her book Chalet friends though and felt sad that she would never be able to chat with them again. Maybe she should wish to go back. But was sure her mysterious wish granter would never allow it to happen, although she hoped that someday she might find out who that person really was.
