Verity-Ann Carey lay out as best she could manage on two hard wooden chairs, and looked up at Emily Lawrence, the school’s Dramatic Arts prefect.

“Is this the sort of thing you’re looking for?” Emily surveyed the effect critically, and shook her head slowly.

“Not quite, Vee. It needs…” she looked around wildly for inspiration, then her eyes lit up and two strides brought her to the deeply set window that looked out onto the school’s front garden. She ran a hand down the faded rose-coloured velvet curtain, then climbed onto the windowseat and began unhooking it. At this sign of outright vandalism, Verity-Ann sat up indignantly.

“Emily, stop that immediately! You can’t possibly…”

“Oh, bother to ‘can’t’,” replied Emily rudely. “I’ll put it up again later, and it’s not as if Brownie would mind.” As Miss Amelia Brown, erstwhile proprietress of Miss Brown’s School for Young Ladies, would indeed not mind – or, at any rate, would not be able to bring herself to object to any plan the insouciant Emily might concoct – Verity-Ann was left with nothing to say, and she subsided onto one of the chairs, only to be ousted moments later as Emily arranged the curtain artistically over the chairs. She pushed Verity-Ann back down and, with an affectionate smile at her friend, Verity-Ann sank into the sentimental pose she had previously adopted.

“How is it now?”

“Better,” said Emily, stroking her chin. “At least, it’s far from perfect, but the play’s not for ages, and we’ve plenty of time to refine it. It’s a start, anyway.” She snatched up a much-abused notebook from the table by the window, and started scribbling notes to herself. Verity-Ann abandoned her makeshift chaise longue, put the chairs back where they belonged, and folded up the curtain. She had just finished this when a knock came on the door, and, on being bid so to do, the door was opened and a head peeped in.

“Please, Verity-Ann, there’s rather a row with the Third, and Katherine asked me to come and find someone to sort them out.”

“All right, Caroline,” said Verity-Ann, smiling at the rather anxious-looking Third Former. “I’ll come down. Thank you for bringing Katherine’s message.” Caroline smiled back, clearly relieved that the situation brewing in the sunny classroom used by the Third would be resolved, and then disappeared back to her compeers. Verity-Ann glanced at Emily, who rolled her eyes.

“A head girl’s work is never done,” she said, tongue in cheek. “Am I glad Brownie didn’t pitch on me for the role!” Verity-Ann giggled.

“As if she would! She’d as soon pick one of the babies!” With that retort, Miss Verity-Ann Carey, Head Girl, headed for the Third.

Emily watched her go, a thoughtful smile on her face. Vee had certainly whipped the school into shape – Brownie tended to be lax, and the last few head girls had been hopeless when it came to dealing with the younger girls. Verity-Ann might be quiet and unassuming, but when she dug her heels in, nobody could match her for sheer stubbornness, and she invariably won the day! She had first arrived at Miss Browne’s four years previously, at the age of thirteen. Her father, an entomologist of some repute, suffered from considerable ill-health, and had decided to withdraw Verity-Ann from the boarding school she had attended and send her to a closer establishment. Mr Carey’s health was increasingly precarious, and it seemed likely that Verity-Ann would soon be alone, but she was not without friends, and Emily knew that the other girl would be able to manage, as indeed she had managed her father’s household for several years.

“I’m glad she came here,” she thought to herself, laying aside her notebook and curling up in an armchair, the better to wait for her friend’s return. “She’s a jolly good sort!”

Look at me reading fic on the board. Look! Very good, Squeenie, that's how Verity should be. Off to read about Grizzle now.

Like it! Verity-Anne was treated very badly by EBD in the later books.

Verity Anne is great here. Such a shame EBD never really gave her a chance.

Much more true to her character than the 'broken reed'! That was lovely.
