Post subject:  I made her cry... 30/5/09 possibly finished

Quick note: I've been away from the CBB for some time, so apologies if anybody has already written a similar story about OOAOML. Also I think I may have left some unfinished stories lurking on the board; I still intend to deal with these, but at the moment I'm rather taken with this PB...

Mary Lou Trelawney to anyone who knew her, looked absolutely fine.

Standing tall, eyes blazing with confidence and intelligence she looked every inch the complete ex-Head Girl of the Chalet School.

Inside her, it was a different story.

Mary Lou's beloved mother was dying and nothing could be done.

Not even the great Dr. Maynard could help. All that could be done was to make Mrs Trelawney's final journey as smooth and pain free as possible.

For the first time in years Mary Lou was in touch with her inner child and was desperate to do the unthinkable and that was look after her self.

It was so hard! Mary Lou could never have been accused of selfishness, but her mother, this was her mother, please could she have some time to cry, to weep, to mourn and grieve as she wanted?

Why did everybody want her for some task or other when all she wanted to do was be with her mother and get used to the idea of her inevitable end?

Mary Lou resented the demands placed upon her by Aunt Joey and Uncle Jack, by the triplets and by everybody else. Just for once she needed to be a "spineless jellyfish" and let the emotion out.

A butterfly fluttered by in the copse which straddled the boundary between Freuedesheim and the Chalet School. At the sight of it, a memory surfaced.

As a four year old Mary Lou had been asking about her lepidopterist father and he had left behind a beautiful book on butterflies for his daughter. Mrs Trelawney had taken the book to Mary Lou and they talked about the beautiful pictures and creatures detailed in the book.
Mary Lou remembered that glow of warmth and love from her mother and absent father. She treasured that happy memory and smiled.

Poor Mary Lou! Her peace was rudely interrupted.

"Hey it's that old Head Girl, you remember the one who made your sister cry!"

"Schtill Dumpkof! She might have heard us and she'll tell the Abbess!"

Mary Lou felt tears pricking at her eyes.

Was she to be spared nothing in this world? No peace? Is that how people thought of her - somebody who made girls cry? The silly kid probably deserved it at the time!

Her steel Head Girl glare appeared and she swung round, but the girls had vanished. Mary Lou checked her wristwatch. Whoever they were they should have been in lessons! With grim determination, Mary Lou set off in pursuit.

Mary Lou was relieved to hear a seriously annoyed Len Maynard collaring the girls and bringing them to justice for their truancy.

Mary Lou breathed a sigh of relief.

Her heart sank at more approaching footsteps and a familiar voice calling her name.

Very sensitively done - who is the owner of the footsteps and familiar voice...? Joey?

Thanks, Phil, looking forward to more.

Mary Lou swallowed the lump of distress in her throat and forced the tears down. Instantly she was back to "normal" Mary Lou as Joey bore down on her.

"There you are! I never had you down as a day dreamer Mary Lou!"

Mary Lou waited for the inevitable comment about day dreaming and Con.

It quickly followed.

"Mind Con doesn't see you day dreaming, I'm sure if she does she will think 'if it's good enough for Mary Lou, it's good enough for me' I know my own daughter's wicked ways!"

Mary Lou frowned as she followed Joey.

"There's so much you don't know about your daughters"

Thankfully Mary Lou did not speak that particular thought aloud.

"What can I help you with Aunt Joey?"

Mary Lou spoke a little too briskly and Joey looked up sharply. She had not lost touch with the old perceptive Joey Bettany whom she used to be. She could tell Mary Lou was at breaking point.

"It's this reunion I am planning, Grizel is coming home! I really do need some help with these invitations and organising feeds and activities."

"Righto, let's crack on then."

There was barely any emotion in Mary Lou's voice. She wanted to be allowed to dwell on her memories of mother.

Joey suspected this and decided to distract Mary Lou by talking about when Mary Lou first joined the Chalet School.

"And you were an imp of mischief! What wicked deeds you got up to Mary Lou..."

It went on and on. Mary Lou considered. What wrong did she actually commit when she was a middle? OK, speaking out of turn and a fight with Phil Craven in which she had used unparliamentary language unbecoming a human being, but that was it. How was she a wicked middle?

Mary Lou thought about this. Had she been stealing? had she put her life in danger or that of another student or person? Had she run away? Had she indulged in a midnight feast or damaged school property? So how was she a wicked middle in her day?

Joey's strategy to distract Mary Lou from dwelling on melancholy thoughts did not work. In fact, it only made Mary Lou more tense.

Mary Lou was to get more tense as she ran an errand to Miss Annersley for Joey, then a further one to St Mildred's then Jack got hold of her there and asked her to run an errand back to Freuedesheim, so by the time she got to her dying mother's bedside, that frail lady had already gone to sleep for the night, her life drawing peacefully to a close.

Mary Lou could have screamed.

It was a horrible nightmare. As she headed to where she was living, she had the solace of kicking a tree and shouting at the top of her voice, "Go away Uncle Jack and Aunt Joey, Go away Chalet School, I want my mother!"

Exhausted, she went straight to bed.

"Jack, I am worried about our one and only."

Jack Maynard heaved a sigh and closed his newspaper, resting on the table beside his armchair.

"You mean Mary Lou? She seems to be coping in her own 'Mary Lou' way."

"She's not Jack. She's just bottling it up and I keep trying to distract her and keep her busy so she won't go all melancholy."

"I'll have a talk with her."

Jack frowned as he made a mental note to deal with Miss Trelawney. Mary Lou could be quite stubborn when she wanted, but she wouldn't dare disobey Uncle Jack.

Jack intended to lecture Mary Lou using the old "spineless jellyfish" argument about giving away to paroxysms of grief.

Sadly, Jack was no psychiatrist.

Nor was Joey.

In Jack's world, his word was law and what he said was Gospel.

When Mary Lou was finally to break and be allowed to grieve, she was to tell Jack and Joey some startling home truths.

Joey's comment about Mary Lou
Quote:
She's just bottling it up and I keep trying to distract her and keep her busy so she won't go all melancholy

is contradictory as she knows it is not god to bottle up her feelings, but by keeping her busy is she is encouraging her to do just that.

Mary Lou breathed a sigh of relief as Miss Annersley left her. She enjoyed talking to her former headmistress and it was a real treat to see Miss Cochcrane "Cocky" again.

Mary Lou could not fail to notice how strained "old Cocky" appeared. For once though, Mary Lou did not care, her mind was too full of her mother and an end to her suffering. She had told "Cocky" that she was pleased it was all coming to end for her mother. To a certain extent this was true; mother had been frail all her life and had nobody left now but her daughter.

Nonetheless, Mary Lou felt she was obliged to say these words in order to show the outside world what a strong person she was. Even Mary Lou has feelings though...

She quickened her pace to Unter den Kiefern and by the time she was at the front door, she was gasping for breath after a massive sprint. She gulped in fresh oxygen to compose herself.

"Hello Darling!"

That beautiful voice! So frail yet so full of love!

Mary Lou was at her mother's side gently rearranging bedcovers and checking the room temperature.

"Mum, any change today? Has the doctor visited? What did he say? How.."

Mrs Trelawney held up her hand.

"No change you sillly sausage! Now I could do with a cup of tea."

Mary Lou hurried away and was back as soon as she could with a tea for her mother.

"Mum, do you think about Dad?"

"I think about him a lot and your Gran and your Stepfather. Your father wanted you to have a brand new Christening robe embroidered with butterflies when you were born, but your Gran argued that his old family Christening robe was perfectly allright thank you!"

Mary Lou smiled. Dad had wanted her to take an interest in her special subject of lepidoptera, she had been told that from an early age.

"I'm so looking forward to seeing his collections in the British Museum. I know I've enjoyed the Chalet School, but I've never had time to investigate my Father's life and Uncle Archie's war service when he was killed."

Mrs Trelawney smiled knowingly.

"Oh Mum...I feel I have neglected you too! I've been so wrapped up with the school, I haven't made time for you and I love you so much, more than I can say, I always have...Mummy."

Mary Lou wept, and her mother cradled her daughter next her (as far as she could being in bed).

"Darling, precious don't worry. You haven't neglected me. I am and always shall be your mother and I shall be with you forever, just as Gran is, Father is, Uncle Archie and everyone. You do trust your mum don't you?"

Mary Lou stared into her mother's loving eyes and parent and child stayed for goodness knows how long chatting idly about memories, Mary Lou's plans.

That night Mary Lou had got a lot of doubts and worries off her chest. Her mother's death would still hit her hard, for she still maintained her "Head Girl" persona to the outside world and she would need to grieve, but first she had to return to Carn Beg to help with Verity's wedding.

Mary Lou awaited the arrival of Jack Maynard who was to take her to England to go to Verity's wedding.

A memory briefly surfaced; it was the time she started boarding at the Chalet School and was soon to be reunited with her great friend Clemency Barras.

The perceptive young Mary Lou had noticed her mother was very distracted and Gran had been diagnosed with "a cold". She had certainly heard Gran coughing and sneezing, but she was sure there was something else.

Doris Trelawney awoke from her sleep; her eyes followed her daughter as she paced around the room.

"Mary Lou Trelawney, I can read you like a book!"

Mary Lou rushed to her mother's side and glowed with pleasure to see the traces of a smile on her mother's face.

"You're worried dear. Distracted. You look like how I felt when you ... you.."

"When I first went away to the Chalet School to board? It wasn't just Gran's cold and my growing up was it? There was something else."

Doris took some deep rasping breaths.

"Scraps of information, not a great deal, just scraps about your Father's death. Dr Maynard wanted to censor the information to cause the least distress to your Gran, so she found out from other people, colleagues of your Father's. We didn't know for certain if he was dead, but there was the possibility. The waiting was horrible and Dr Maynard wouldn't tell us. I know his intentions were to spare us pain, but your Gran and I prefer people who talk to us straight."

Doris gulped for air. Mary Lou tried to make her mother more comfortable.

"Oh the pain of waiting for news! I don't want you to suffer like that through worrying about me. Promise me you won't worry Mary Lou! Now you go and enjoy that wedding and give Verity my love. She's not marrying a doctor is she?"

Mary Lou squawked with laughter.

"No. Alan, he is a solicitor and he has a fear of hospitals and doctors!"

Doris Trelawney smiled. She had had quite enough of doctors now and wanted to rest in peace.

She kissed her daughter goodbye. They would meet one final time on Mary Lou's return after the wedding.

Downstairs Jack had let himself in to Unter Den Kiefern. He quickly checked on his patient and gave some instructions to the two nurses there and took Mary Lou with him. Mary Lou gave a final anxious look at her sleeping mother, then she went straight back into her "hail fellow well met" mode that was characteristic of her school days. She was determined Uncle Jack should not know her innermost and sensitive feelings.

Mary Lou eyed Jack Maynard in the car. How much did he really know about Father's death? Did he know all the gory details? What right did he have to know?

At this time, Mary Lou wanted to reject her adoptive or brevet family and be with her own people or thinking of her mother and departed members of the family. She resented Jack's control of everything, her financial affairs, the fact he was giving Verity away even the fact that he gave Daisy away at her wedding when it should have been Jem! Trying to restrain her temper and only just succeeding, she immersed herself in some archaeology journals which she had picked up on her travels somewhere.

It was a long journey from Switzerland to Carn Beg and she barely said a word and she was relieved to get to bed. There were preparations to be made for Verity's wedding and she was quite looking forward to meeting one of Alan Trevor's (Verity's fiancee) friends again. At the wedding, this friend in particular was to be a great comfort to the stressed Mary Lou.

Martin Tull was one of the longest standing friends Alan Trevor had ever known. They had known each other since babyhood and gone to the same schools and university, they knew what the other was thinking, they had had rows, fought over girls and come together in times of crisis and now he was looking after his great friend as he took this solemn and beautiful step of marriage.

Martin had taken a while to get used to Verity Ann Carey but knew she was the one for Alan. He was so proud of his friend.

As for his own life, he doubted he would find someone, he preferred his independence and to go off and explore somewhere. He had turned down law as a career and was a geographer. He was a shy and sensitive fellow unlke Alan who was very much a social animal. It was rare to find the woman who could bring Martin's soul out into the open. Just one such woman happened to be a great ffriend of Alan's wife to be and Martin was looking forward to getting reacquainted with her.

Martin had met Verity Ann's friend several times and her common sense and blunt honesty seemed to press the right buttons and he felt she valued him. She was also the first person he had ever met whom he felt comfortable arguing with!

As he walked to the village pub with Alan for a few pre wedding drinks, his mind briefly focussed upon Mary Lou Trelawney.

Meanwhile, that young lady felt a wave of emotion come over her as she woke up in her old room in Carn Beg. Uncle Jack had bagged mother's old room and Mary Lou felt that keenly. Still, there was no point kicking up a fuss over it.

As soon as Jack had gone out on some mysterious errand, Mary Lou walked around the house and wept openly. She went up to the attic where some old family stuff was kept, all sorts of gubbins that had not been taken to Switzerland.

She remembered shunning demonstrations of emotion as a child and being "Her Father all, over again" but now she felt more in tune with her only surviving relative: her mother, her gentle mother. Mary Lou pulled herself together. She had a lot to get through that day and was happy for Verity Ann and she was looking forward to seeing Martin!

Mary Lou intended to tell Martin all about her interest in archaeology and her father's specialty in lepidoptera and entymology. She wanted to tell him about the collections in the British Museum and she wanted to ask where he had travelled to and was he looking into caves and caving as he mentioned in his last letter.

She cleaned herself up for the wedding and began to feel more like her old self.

The ceremony over and speeches made (thank the good lord Uncle Jack had not mentioned the time Verity Ann defied Plato over the German carols) Mary Lou made a beeline for Martin. His eyes lit up as he saw her and he kissed and embraced her like an old friend. Soon they were chatting nineteen to the dozen,

"Oh the salt caves of the Tirol your Aunt Joey mentioned to you, yes I should love to see those! I managed to get to Fox Glacier in New Zealand last year and I hope to get to Vesuvius later this year."

"Out of the frying pan into the fire Martin!"

Jack noticed Mary Lou's lively chatter with young Martin. He took one look at Martin and sized him up.

"Just the thought of lad Mary Lou would want to mother! Well, she doesn't need to be taking on anybody's problems right now. I shall soon sort him out."

Jack thought grimly.

Jack's intentions to spare Mary Lou of anybody else's worries were entirely honorouble. He was only trying to protect his brevet niece, someone he had known since the age of nine. It was unfortunate he was to get it wrong on this occasion.

Mary Lou had worked out Martin too; he was just the sort of nice young man she could look after and enjoy looking after too. He may lack assertiveness, but he was incredibly intelligent and an expert in his field. She did know he could be naive and easily influenced, but she was to be shocked at how he was to be influenced within the day.

When Mary Lou was dancing with the groom Jack strode with determiantion to Martin who was gazing with wonder at Mary Lou. Jack knew how to make his point and he also knew Martin was the sort of sensitive character whom he could give a clear instruction to and be sure of obedience.

"Now look here young man, listen to me. Mary Lou has a lot on her plate at the moment...her mother is terminally ill...doesn't need a boyfriend right now...she has her studies to think of...she already has an extensive family to whom she can rely upon for support."

Jack could have condensed this down to "She's ours, keep away" but he did not.

Poor Martin was feeling utterly humiliated and furious with himself for not standing up to this man. Who did he think he was? As far as he knew he wasn't even related to Mary Lou, let alone Verity Ann. Martin smouldered like a volcano, more cross with himself for not standing up to Jack Maynard.

Mary Lou came over to join him a drink in her hand.

"Were you talking to Uncle Jack? About what?"

Mary Lou appreciated blunt honesty but she was not about to appreciate this.

"You Uncle Jack has told me to leave you well alone!"

Mary Lou looked appalled.

"But WHY?"

Fury surged through Mary Lou as Martin told her of his crushing by the older man.

"Of all the conceited..."

She appeared to want to storm off in Jack Maynard's direction. Martin caught her in time.

"Don't! It's as much my fault for not answering the bullying brute back! Anyway he's only trying to look out for you!"

"I can look after myself!" seethed Mary Lou.

For the rest of the night two of the most important guests bar the couple were thoroughly upset. Neither wanted to be in each other's company since they felt Jack Maynard pushing them apart.

When it was time to go, the cold, depressed and miserable Mary Lou had returned, and she was furious with Uncle Jack, furious.

"But I won't give him the satisfaction of showing it!"

Mary Lou wondered how the triplets coped with a father like that. Perhaps Margot's temper was inherited from her Father? Well done Sherlock Holmes!

Mary Lou went straight to bed without wishing Jack goodnight.

Hope Mary Lou gives him her unvarnished opinion.

The wedding night was over and Mary Lou returned to wish Verity and her husband goodbye for their honeymoon.

"Here's our gift to you" Alan handed Mary Lou a wrapped package.

"But before you open it, someone seems to have left some flowers in the hotel, they seem to be in a trail or something. Most untidy. I'm sure you can trace the miscreant down and get them to tidy up; with a good old Head Girl lecture!"

Alan had a twinkle in his eye and Mary Lou knew exactly what he meant. Despite all her toughness, Mary Lou still had a romantic need and nobody, not any of the young doctors at the San had ever shown any interest in her! She was quite jealous of Reg and Len, truth be told.

She picked up a daffodil, then a rose, then a chrysanthemum, then some violets, she smiled as she found herself in the conservatory, the morning's sunshine streamed in and she could smell the fresh air. Someone took her hand.

It was Martin.

"I couldn't leave you like this. You are a wonderful person to know and just this once I am not going to be the good boy who does as he is told. Bother Dr Maynard, I am having a good old chinwag with you whether he likes it or not!"

Mary Lou giggled. She briefly thought of telling him off for slang, but since he wasn't in any way connected with the Chalet School, she knew he wouldn't get the joke.

With Martin, Mary Lou did not have to be Chalet School Mary Lou. She could be herself and embrace the world outside the Chalet School. It was high time she met boys or men of her own age rather than be a nursemaid to baby boys and girls of certain families!

They talked about their interests and Mary Lou flushed with pride when Martin said he had a friend at the British Museum who was looking after the Trelawney collection of lepidoptera. Martin was going to see Father's collections!

Martin asked about Doris Trelawney. He noticed the colour drain from Mary Lou.

"If you'd rather not talk about it" he said.

"That's the point, I want to. I can't at the Chalet School environment where everybody needs me and I just want to be with mother. Nobody will allow me to let my emotions out and come to terms with mother dying. Am I being selfish?"

"Not at all. You have been everybody's problem solver and Mr. Fix it for far too long. Although they are your friends, they are far too reliant on you. It sounds like a relationship where they all borrow from you and you get little back in return. You concentrate on your mother."

Mary Lou listened. It was quite refreshing to hear a different point of view.

"Martin, I can't thank you enough. You have really helped me."

She gave him a kiss and then a voice said,

"What do you think you are doing?"

Jack's eyes danced as he asked Martin this question.

Mary Lou thought how like Margot he looked. Well she had had enough of being a nursemaid to Margot in her time and she wasn't going to take it from Jack either.

"We were kissing Uncle Jack. Martin is a friend of mine. He is perfectly respectable and not some rake!"

Jack gave her a look to tell her to be quiet. Mary Lou refused to do this.

"Uncle Jack I do not think it unreasonable of me at my age to have male friends and it is certainly a good thing to meet people not connected with the school. Just because you don't know Martin and are in loco parentis.."

"It's allright Mary Lou! We were kissing. Dr Maynard, I admire your protectiveness of Mary Lou, but she and I are quite old enough to look after ourselves. She is a strong enough character to tell me where to get off should she dislike me. I believe your overreacting somewhat. I have no designs upon her other than her good friendship."

Jack was astounded at being spoken to by this young man who was scarcely older than Len! Jack's usual medicine for being spoken to in this manner by a man younger than him was a hefty dose of his stick. If Stephen had spoken to him like that, there would be all hell to pay!

"I would advise you to learn some manners my lad!" growled Jack.

Mary Lou butted in with a well timed comment.

"How is Margot these days Jack? I didn't even bother to ask about the trips."

The reference to his belligerent daughter stopped Jack in his tracks.

"You know Martin I really must show Switzerland to you; Lake Lucerne, Geneva, Berne, Montreux, ZERMATT!"

Jack gulped. The significance of the last resort Mary Lou mentioned did not go unnoticed, especially as Mary Lou had mentioned the temptestuous Margot seconds earlier.

"Well perhaps I had better let you two get along. Be ready to leave at 2.30 Mary Lou."

As Martin left first Jack had time to quickly whisper to Mary Lou,

"It's only because I CARE about you!"

Jack stomped off whilst Mary Lou pursued Martin.

But who is Jack to decide what the right thing is?

Martin is a well-educated, personable young man, has just acted as his BF's best Man, and above all, Jack knows nothing about him, and seems to have made no attempt to find out about him.

"I'm tired of being a nursemaid to his brats! All I want is to look after mother and I intend to do that now I have seen Verity happily married."

Martin listened.

"Oh Martin, really Auntie Joey and Uncle Jack are wonderful and caring people; however one does feel manacled to them forever. They've been too kind."

"Do you feel guilty about a perfectly natural urge to help your mother? You say you have been keeping an eye out for these triplets as they grew up because Auntie Joey was always doing so much with the school or having a baby. It seems to me you have spent too much time being a part of them instead of asserting your own identity."

"But I did assert myself! You could never have called me a crowd following sheep at school...Oh...I see what you mean. I've focussed myself on the Maynards as my family and I feel bad about not spending time with mother."

Martin nodded. "It's just my thoughts, they may not be right."

"And when I first heard about Father's death, I reasoned that I could not grieve when I did not know the man and yet it affected mother so badly and Gran."

"Then along comes a surrogate family including surrogate Dad, everything a Dad should be: strict yet kind and caring."

"Mother! I must return to Switzerland, at once. Martin you have helped me so much I don't know how to repay you. I must find out about the Trelawney in me. I must know more about who I am and who my family really is. I am not a Maynard. I am Mary Lou Trelawney!"

And with some of her vivacity flooding back, Mary Lou prepared for her journey home where she hoped mother was still clinging on to life; just so she could say one last goodbye.

Jack was waiting in the hotel lobby. He had been very subdued. Mary Lou was her own master and Jack had learnt that lesson. She was not one of his girls whom he could order into obedience with a glance.

Even Margot in her pre Zermatt days would have been terrified of the look Jack had given Mary Lou and Martin when he caught them kissing. Mary Lou had defied him with a maturity and independent spirit that was lacking in his children.

"Serves me right for treating her too much as one of my own! She's a young woman now and that lad isn't so bad from what Alan Trevor says."

On the return visit to Switzerland Jack steered clear of the subject of Martin and treated Mary Lou as his equal. Most of the time was taken up discussing the wedding, Doris's treatment and various legal and financial topics.

Jack took Mary Lou straight to Unter Den Kiefern. Doris Trelawney was much weaker but recognised her one and only daughter.

"Mary Lou, Mary Lou"

Doris stroked Mary Lou's hair and crooned softly as she did when Mary Lou had been in her cradle.

"Adam loves you, he's so proud."

"Adam? Oh you mean Dad! Why didn't you say Dad, Mum? Mum? Mum, I'm going to read up on my family history. I'm going to find out about Uncle Archie and his war record and I'm going to collect all the stuff on Dad's expeditions...Oh Mum it will be thrilling!"

Doris smiled.

"I'll always love you"

"I'll always love you Mum"

Mother and daughter kissed one last time and Doris peacefully slipped away to join her husband.

It took what seemed an age for Mary Lou to realise what had happened; in fact it was a few seconds. She held her mother's hand in disbelief. Jack moved over to her and checked for vital signs.

"It's over Mary Lou, she's free from pain and suffering. She is in Heaven now, with her loved ones, but she and they will watch over you forever."

Jack held on to the frozen Mary Lou as he made the sign of the cross and said a prayer. He then called for a nurse as he had to have someone look after Mary Lou whilst he put into operation the plan for all the fiddly procedures that come with the death of a loved one.

Everything ran like clockwork: the church service, the funeral and interrment and the condolencies and legal and financial affairs, but poor Mary Lou was still too shell shocked to come to terms with it. Everything had happened so peacefully, quickly and she had had time to say goodbye and farewell to her mother; so why did she feel numb and empty?

That is so true after an expected death where there has been time to say goodbye. So much griefing occurs during the illness, that the relief leaves you empty at first before it grief comes back in overwelming waves. And Mary Lou has lost her mother before the owrk on grief and dying was well known and the support which should be there today (though often is not) was unknown.

Mary Lou took a deep breath. The numbness was still with her. So was the empty feeling.

Martin had been over to see her and he had had to leave of course, to go back to his work.

Brave attempts by Mary Lou to go through family papers and diaries had been made, but nothing had been completed.

She was aware that Grizel Cochrane had suffered some injury and Len had been involved. All this went straight over her head.

There was a knock at the door of Unter den Kiefern.

A slight frown creased Mary Lou's forehead. She could hear the chatter of three naughty sixteen year old babies. Now what did they want?

A hint of a steel glare greeted the triplets and all three of them huddled next to each other for protection. Mary Lou did look cross!

"P...P...Please Mary Lou, Mama and Papa sent us over to see if we could make ourselves useful."

The triplets may be seniors of sixteen years of age, but Mary Lou was still terrifying. She also knew where all the bodies were buried in the Maynard family.

Mary Lou blushed. Poor little kids are only trying to be helpful! They must be worrying about whether or not I am going to break down in tears. Trying though the triplets could be, Mary Lou was fond of them.

"Very well, come on in. I have been a bit slack on housework and I could get on with some gardening and then I need help with my family papers and..."

"Well that's three jobs and three of us!" Con butted in cheerfully.

Con shrank back fearing an admonishment for speaking too quickly. All three of the poor triplets could tell Mary Lou was about to break even if Mary Lou herself could not.

"If you want us to call back another time..." Margot practically whimpered.

Mary Lou felt the tears pricking at her eyes. Was she such a monster? She hadn't meant to frighten them and she did love them dearly.

"Perhaps now is not a good time. I must do a few things first, then I shall call in to see your mother. Now don't worry about me and thank you for coming down to see me. I dare say we shall catch up later."

She sent the triplets on their way witha warm hug for each of them and a kiss.

Puzzled at this display of affection from Mary Lou, the triplets wandered back to Freuedesheim. All three agreed Mary Lou was not taking her mother's death well and that she was at a breaking point. Every details was relayed by the concerned triplets to their worried mother on their return home.

Joey was alone in the happy home that made up the Maynard residence. Anna had the arduous task of taking Bruno to the vet and the triplets had taken the tinies on a walk.

Mary Lou arrived and was greeted by an exuberant Joey. One look at Mary Lou's vacant expression was enough to make Joey very worried.

Conversation lagged with monosyllabic replies from Mary Lou to each one of Joey's questions and topics of small talk.

"Come along Mary Lou, let's take a walk in the garden. Oh look these flowers are in full bloom already! Doris used to love these didn't she?"

Then the explosion happened.

"Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!"

A cascade of tears flowed like waterfalls from Mary Lou.

"I can't bear this any more! I can't! What did you know about my mother? You were too busy getting me to be a mother to some child at the school who had problems! You even got me to nursemaid your three eldest and God knows they needed nursemaiding! What you don't know about your wicked daughters..."

"But..."

"All I wanted was to grow up with my mother I hardly had any time with her! I lost my father, my grandmother, step father and now my mother and I have wasted all my time on your three! Why couldn't you look after them? You and Uncle Jack? Why?"

Joey was shocked into silence. Just what had Len, Con and Margot done?

"My mother was the most important person in the world to me and I never spent enough time with her; because of your family and that school!"

"Mary Lou I am sorry!"

Mary Lou was breathing heavily now.

There was more to come and Joey would be stunned!

I could understand Joey not being told about the Ted/blackmail affair at the time because she was very "busy" and having a difficult time of it, but someone really should've told her later on. It must've been the only CS scandal she didn't know about, and it involved her own children  .

Mary Lou sobbed.

For once in her life Joey was very startled. Should she try the time honoured Jack Maynard treatment for hysterical patients and slap Mary Lou hard?

Joey did not care for the possible reaction from Mary Lou if she did try that particular method. Mary Lou looked ready to pick a fight with her own shadow.

"Mum...Mum...Mum...Mummy...Mum."

Joey decided discretion was the better part of valour and simply held Mary Lou and sat her down, cuddling her as if she were no more than a baby.

"It's not like I have anyone to turn to from the family whom I can talk about mum."

"Out of my real, real family, there is only me left. Uncle Archie had no children, mum was an only child, so was gran and my other grandparents. There's only me! Only me! Sister by marriages or brevet families are all very well, but when you lose the last person of your proper, full family, then you really are alone!"

Mary Lou's blue eyes burned fiercely in a way that made Joey feel rather nervous.

"I should have made more time for her. She was never in the best of health. Why was I made to feel as if your family and the school would fall apart without me?"

Joey blushed. Mary Lou was unique in that she had been relied upon as a moral leader in her early days at the school and obviously as an all round leader in her later years. Even after she left she was still in demand. Previous head girls did have the right to a life beyond the school, but it seemed as if Mary Lou were chained here. Everyone had borrowed sage advice from Mary Lou in the past and nothing had been given back to her in return; no personal time or space that is.

"Countless times I felt as if I was the only person with half a brain at the Chalet School! Problem brats would be offloaded onto me whom even the teachers could not deal with, you would always have another job for me and somehow, just somehow, your daughters usually seemed to be at the centre of any problem or issue in the school!"

At this inopportune moment Joey asked,

"What have my girls done to upset you?"

"Never mind that! Never mind them! Ask them yourselves! What about me? Yes; for once I am thinking selfishly. I need a life and I need to go out into the world and flourish."

"Sorry Mary Lou."

"I wanted to talk through my ideas with my mother. Could I do that? Could I ha!"

Mary Lou broke into further tears.

"I miss her so much! I love her! I'll always love you mum! I'll always love you! I didn't visit so much because of the school! It's not that I didn't care! Really I did! Oh mother I'm sorry. I shouldn't have wasted all that time at the school. I'm so sorry."

Mary Lou was aware of someone else crying now.

It was Joey.

She was so struck by Mary Lou's outburst and felt ashamed that she had been a part of separating a daughter from a mother. Perhaps she should have taken a more active role with her girls? There was no excuse. They lived next door to the school. Why had she burdened Mary Lou with the triplets?

Mary Lou stopped crying. She had never seen Aunt Joey cry before.

"I'm a fool, I'm a selfish fool. I'm sorry Mary Lou. I am an inadequate mother. I am so sorry. I hadn't thought I would be.."

Mary Lou calmed down and moved to comfort Joey.

"It's OK. It's OK. You needed help from somebody. You had to do your writing, look after the school and Uncle Jack had to work hard to provide a roof over your heads. Auntie Joey it's not all your fault. Please don't blame yourself."

"But you wanted your mother so badly...You should have said something at the time. Why didn't you?"

"I don't know. That's the awful thing. I must have taken it for granted that she would be allright out here. I hate myself for that."

"Please don't hate yourself. I am sure Doris would have understood."

"She did. She always told me that, but I still need to grieve."

Joey gave a little wan smile.

"Grieve away my dear. Let it all out."

Mary Lou wept on Joey's shoulder for a good half hour. Joey was a great comfort with a positive message for every negative moment when Mary Lou was feeling sorry for herself. By the end Joey had steered Mary Lou to a happier outlook of the future.

"You can get to know this chap Martin, go on some of those archaeological digs, the world is your oyster. Don't feel you have to keep coming back here."

By the time the triplets had returned Mary Lou had composed herself.

"Auntie Joey, I did need to say what I did about the school using me as some sort of lynchpin and superwoman. I felt a lot of resentment about that."

"Yes I know now and I am deeply sorry for that; we relied on you too heavily Mary Lou. You must have your own life."

Satisfied, Mary Lou left in time to see the returning triplets. They entered to be greeted by an ice cold mother. At once three spines shivered and three pretty faces looked at their shoes, feeling very submissive.

"Mary Lou is grieveing for her late mother. It would be a good idea for you to leave her alone. She also told me that at times you were quite a handful at school. Now I am not going to ask what misdeeds you got up to. No doubt Mary Lou dealt with them properly; however I am disappointed that you caused her any problems in the first place. She was not and is not your nursemaid. I hope you treat her with some respect and dignity now."

At this ice cold scolding, the triplets fled.

Margot went white.

"Does she know about Zermatt?"

"She'd have said if she did Margot." Len reassured her.

"Mary Lou looked like she had been crying and getting a lot of things off her chest." observed Con.

Con's conclusion was spot on. Mary Lou had unleashed the gates of grief within her and let loose her resentment of the school and the Maynards. Joey had made her cry and this had released Mary Lou's inner turmoil but Joey had also learnt some uncomfortable home truths about relying upon one person too much.

Not surprised she feels some resentment. It was ridiculous that she was expected to sheepdog Naomi when they weren't even in the same form and Naomi already knew Barbara and Vi, for example. Hope that getting it all out in the open helps.

I think that perhaps Mary-Lou is forgetting slightly what her mother might think; she and Gran always seemed so happy that Mary-Lou had settled in well and was liked so much. I think Mrs Trelawny was probably happier with a girl who was so active and whom so many people liked, rather than someone who sat at home all day being good. But then Mary-Lou's reaction is so understandable.

I also feel sorry for Joey - even Jack knows about Zermatt, only she is being kept in the dark, and it must be a horrible feeling. (Complete side thought, but where are they hiding the clock? Surely Joey can't have seen it, or she would have found everything out, but where on earth would he put it that she wouldn't see?)

Thankyou, this is so touching.

"Dear Martin,

I have had a time of it here. I completely broke down in front of AUnt Joey and I must say I let her have my unvarnished opinion of the school and the family.

Poor Aunt Joey! Still, I was under a great deal of stress as you can imagine and although I still miss mum, i know she was always happy with me at the school and she wouldn't want me to go to pieces. I'm sure she would just say I was being silly and acting quite naturally as anyone would!

Now you must tell me about this dig in Turkey. Spill the beans young man! I want to know everything! How long will you be away for? Whereabouts is it? Do they need any enterprising young ladies to come and dig a few trenches or polish a few fragments of pottery?

Once this wretched paperwork is over and done with, I can fly out to be with you.

Send my love to your family,

Mary Lou. XX"

"Dear Mary Lou,

I am so glad you managed to release all that grief! You were smouldering like a volcano for weeks on end you poor thing. Are you sure Mrs Maynard is OK after you let everything out in front of her? It must have been a shock. I don't know if I could have helped. I hoped I could have done.

I think you did need to tell her how unhappy you were with the school using you as some sort of superwoman. I'm glad Mrs Maynard seems to appreciate that.

The dig, hopefully it is still on. Old Baker has broken his leg so we might need an intelligent resourceful lady to come out and help after all. I will keep you posted on that. It's a site just thirty miles outside of Ephesus and we hope to go in a fortnight's time for about three weeks. Keep your diary clear just in case!

Love Martin. XX"

Grizel Cochrane looked up with happiness and handed Martin's letter back to a glowing Mary Lou.

"I am so pleased for you Mary Lou."

"I leave on Tuesday. I really can't wait to get my hands dirty."

"Don't let Matey hear you say that." giggled Grizel.

Mary Lou blushed. She could imagine Matey's expression if she saw just how dirty archaeologists on a dig could get. Mary Lou hadn't entertained the possibility of Matey taking a holiday, least of all to Turkey. As it happened Mary Lou was to be quite wrong. Matey was very fond of touring the Middle East and had picked up a fez on a previous visit to Egypt.

"You will be travelling all over the world, you could even have someone write books about you like that Lavender Leigh. Remember her?"

Grizel was on a roll.

"Oh please don't! I could never do that!"

"So we won't be seeing a 'Mary Lou's Travels' series?"

"No! And please don't tell Aunt Joey!"

"Don't worry I won't. Have you met any of your fellow archaeologists yet?"

Mary Lou had indeed. The team leader was a spherical, jolly and aged professor and his fussy wife always accompanied him. Then there was Martin and two young men who were very fond of each other's company. Finally there was Mary Lou herself in place of Baker of the broken leg. All were keen for Professor Trelawney's daughter to come on the dig. Professor and Eleanor Beech had even known Mary Lou's late father and were delighted to be looking after an old friend's daughter and fostering her interest in archaeology.

"You've got the whole world to explore my girl! You enjoy yourself!"
