Don't even begin to ask me when or where this is set - about an hour ago I just started writing it, no time for research! Anyway, small and pointless drabble ahoy

- X -

It was a lovely summers day in the middle of the holidays and Jem had decided that morning that they needed to go for a picnic. This had been greeted enthusiastically, particularly by Joey, who nearly knocked over the milk jug as she started waving her arms around wildly, describing all of the things that she would like to do. Madge was more serene about it all, immediately starting to plan everything that they would need to do, mentally wandering over every item of food in the house. Robin joined in with Joey’s enthusiastic plans. Jem smiled in satisfaction at having pleased everyone so effectively.

An hour later they were ready to set out. Joey adjusted her wide summer hat and slipped a hand into the Robin’s, looking affectionately at the small girl who followed her in everything. The Robin would always have a special place in Joey’s heart. All three ladies looked exceptionally summery, Joey in lime green, Madge in a delicate shade of yellow which complimented perfectly her youthful beauty and the Robin in a red frock which contrasted neatly with her black curls. Jem, wearing his usual suit, his only concession to the sun being to leave his jacket behind and roll up his sleeves, picked up the heaviest picnic basket and lead the way.

Madge took the other basket so that Joey and Robin could walk behind them and become embroiled in their own conversation about the school library. They had barely reached the bottom of the garden, however, when Jem swung around and stopped the friendly argument effectively.

“I forgot to mention that Jack has asked to come with us, as it’s his day off.”

Joey glanced up at him sharply, but the twinkle in his eyes said plainly that he hadn’t forgotten at all. She was ashamed to feel herself blushing slightly, and she quickly turned her head away so that he wouldn’t see his teasing had had any effect. He laughed and strolled on with Madge, while Robin began to question Joey as to why she looked so hot.

Joey was still trying to explain to her – or avoid doing so – when they rounded a corner and met up with Jack. He was wearing a checked shirt, the first three buttons undone and the sleeves rolled, like Jem’s, to his elbows. He grinned and said that he was just coming to find them, as he fell neatly into the party. David and Sybil had been left at home for the day, Madge determined to make the most of Jem getting a day off for once, so that the five of them promenaded up the mountain alone. The picnic spot they had chosen was among a clump of pine trees, a climb which would take up at least half of the day there and back but which was guaranteed to be secluded.

Half way there, Jack took Madge’s basket from her – for although she still looked as fresh and trig as ever, the strain of carrying it was beginning to show – and Joey hoisted Jem’s when he asked. Robin had skipped on ahead to collect a posy of daisies, and Madge and Jem helpfully fell back just enough that Jack and Joey could talk privately. He started by enquiring pleasantly enough about school affairs, and Joey filled him in enthusiastically, but after that the conversation fell somewhat flat.

They wandered on in a companionable silence, each watching for a flash of Robin’s dress in front of them. A murmur of conversation came from behind them as Madge and Jem walked hand in hand, but Joey didn’t know enough about Jack’s life to start another topic. In the end he put down the picnic basket long enough to fish out and light his pipe. They meandered along happily, Joey beginning to tell him about a proposed trip to Innsbruck to see Frieda in the next few days.

The picnic spot was reached without harm, and as they lay out rugs and set down dishes, all five talked eagerly among themselves. A natural divide came about, and as they ate Jem and Jack discussed San. affairs while Madge and Joey tried to settle an amicable dispute about the best way to darn socks. Robin munched happily on some sandwiches, although occasionally she would contribute a little to the debate.

Eventually, all of the food was either eaten or put back into the baskets. Jem lay down and proposed a half hour nap in the sun. Madge tempted Robin slightly further into the woods, promising to tell her some of the local folklore. Joey looked and Jack and suggested a walk, which he agreed to quickly. Leaving Jem to snooze, in an attitude very reminiscent of having overeaten, they stood up and, Joey putting her hat back on now that they were leaving the shadow of the trees, set off haphazardly to see where they would end up.

They had set up the picnic in a tiny glade in the trees, sheltered from the worst of the sun, and it took them half an hour to get out of the woods again. When they did, a quick scout found them a rocky outcrop with beautiful views over the lake. They sat down gratefully, for both were hot, and Jack mopped his face with his handkerchief. The rock was pleasantly warm, and although the sun shone down, now that they were still it wasn’t unbearable. There was a complete silence around them, until they could have been the only two people in the world.

For a little while they simply appreciated the panoramic views. The lake lay before them, just a tiny blue jewel, sparkling in the sun. They were too far up to be able to pick out much detail, but Joey’s eager eyes found the Chalet, and they could just make out other chalets and Gasthaus scattered along the shores. Suddenly, for no reason, Joey sighed.

Jack turned to look at her, concern in his eyes. Aside from still being weary of Joey’s health – even now, he was aware of every small breeze that moved the sparse stalks of mountain flowers around them – he wanted her to be happy. He wanted to give her the perfect day, and he was determined not to let anything spoil it if he could. She may never return his affections, and he had come to accept that a long time ago, but he still wanted to do everything in his power to make her happy.

“Jack,” she said suddenly, her eyes roving across the scene, anywhere but to look at him. “What does it feel like to kiss someone?”

His honest reaction was that he didn’t know. There had never been a woman like Joey before, someone who could captivate him so completely. He liked to study, and until he met Joey he hadn’t shown any interest in women. In fact, he’d never given the question much thought. He tried to find the words to say this, but already she was talking again, a slight colour rising in her cheeks as she hastened to explain.

“I was talking to Marie about it, oh, ages ago now. She said that she had been with Baron von und zu Wertheimer and it felt odd, but she couldn’t really explain it. I – I just wondered, that’s all.”

“I don’t know,” confessed Jack, watching her face intently. “I’ve never tried before.”

She turned to stare at him, and something in her eyes gave her away. Hesitantly, his fingers traced along her cheek, caressing her softly. They were coarse, but his touch was gentle, and Joey found herself unable to pull away. Slowly she leaned in to him, her hands brushing against his neck and resting on his shoulders. She brought her face closer to his, her breath warm against his, so close now that he could wrap his hands around her back.

Very softly their lips met, his warm and firm, hers nervous. They moulded together, Jack tipping his head slightly. He tasted of smoke and the coffee they had had with lunch. Joey pressed against him a little more, her hands twitching. Slowly she relaxed against him, lost in his embrace.

When they broke apart again she leaned her head against his shoulder, so that he could leave one arm around her waist. For a long moment they looked at each other, enamoured, but Joey broke the silence by confessing,

“It was – nice. But odd.”

She turned to look back across the view again, unable to meet his eyes as she tried to savour what had just happened. Jack was equally silent, unable to express just how he felt. At long last, it seemed, Joey was starting to accept him as more than a friend. Sat on a rock in the middle of a mountain, gazing at a clear blue sky, he could honestly say that he had never felt happier.

Well, it is a sweet story, but I do not think this is quite in Joey's character, but I was trying to think who would do this in CS land?

So I came up with Margot. I can imagine her in a scene like this, and she is going off to be a nun isn't she, but Margot and who...? Reg?????

Joey and Jack, well I think it would have been in the cave or somewhere around then
