This is set an undetermined number of years after Prefects. Rosalie is writing to Madge Russell on Hilda’s behalf.

Extract from letter to Madame from Rosalie Dene.

Finally for some light amusement; a little child incident we can make neither head nor tail of. Last Saturday Joey had the new St Nicholas group over to her house. They played the usual games and had English nursery tea. Ructions came afterwards while Joey was showing the little girls her photos. Jenna aged six disagreed with something Joey said, and when Joey corrected her she started to scream. Joey failed to calm her and Anna brought her back early to us.

Poor child. She cried herself into such a state and all we could get out of her was “Auntie was the first” . She was too upset to explain further. One of the St. Nicholas mistresses brought her to bed and read to her until she was calm and ready to sleep.

The next day Miss Norman spoke with Joey to try to find out what had happened; Jenna been too tired to get up. All Joey could say was she had been showing some photos of you and her from the Dark Ages in Austria when she became aware of Jenna quietly muttering in the background. At first Joey had ignored her thinking it typical small child boredom and hoping to enthral her with some later adventures. But the child continued, her protests becoming louder and shriller until eventually Joey asked her what the problem was. Jenna replied with

“You weren’t the first girl in the school.”

Joey then proceeded to explain again to them about you finding the school and she herself as your sister been the first pupil showing Jenna the photograph of the two of you outside The Chalet. For some unfathomable reason this upset Jenna further and she started to scream uncontrollably and had to be brought back to the school.

Miss Norman spoke with Jenna later in the week but to no avail, the poor child just cries when Joey’s name comes up and as she is so thin and delicate we don’t want to push things any further. Consequently we still don’t understand what the small child means but we have decided to turn a blind eye to the incident and not insist on an apology as any reference to Joey causes further tears.

Interesting. The only other person who was ever described as the first pupil was Grizel, surely.

Hmmm....I always think of Simone as the "first pupil". When Madge mentions the school to Dick, she says that Mademoiselle will come teach and bring her cousin, Simone, with her. So, Simone was a pupil before Joey (and Dick) even knew about the school.

Curious, Grizel was an only child so unless it's Neil's niece I can't see it referring to her. But Jenna doesn't sound like a French name - ie Renee Lecoutier's daughter.

Very mysterious and definitely want to know more!

Thanks Mouse.

I tend to think of Grizel as being the first pupil, but Simone was the first girl in the school. Looking forward to hearing more!

Whether she is related to Grizel or Simone I am pleased some one is challenging Joey's claims.
An interesting start, looking forward to more of this.
