"Evvy! The Abbess wants you!" A girl with red hair and intelligent looking eyes came flying towards her.

"Elizabeth" said Evvy somewhat sternly, "This may be the first day, but try and watch your tongue will you, and don't run in the corridors."

"Rules don't start until tomorrow" gibbered the shocked middle.

"And how dare you of all people tell Liz off?" said an insolent looking girl, appearing from nowhere.

"Betty please try and control yourself. Mischief is one thing, but at least I have manners. You would do well to learn some."

Betty stared at the prefect angrily, her dark hair tossing. Her friend recognised the danger signs and dragged her away before anything happened.

"She's a prefect Betty" hissed her friend.

"She's a hypocrite" replied Betty angrily, "How dare you drag me away like that? What kind of friend do you think you are?"

"The kind that don't lose their temper when their friends try to help them" said Elizabeth coldly before stalking away.

***

"Come in" called Miss Annersley in her deep, comforting tones.

Evadne opened the door nervously.

"Hello Evadne" she said warmly, although her smile did not seem to quite reach her eyes, "I expect you have an inkling of why I have asked you to come here."

Evadne nodded her head mutely, was Miss Annersley changing her mind?

"I think you will make a very good head girl Evadne", here she paused, seemingly unsure of what to say next, "Evadne... each year the head girl meets a set of problems and challenges, and I just want you to know that I have faith in your ability to meet these challenges effectively and... safely."

It was the first time Evadne had ever seen the English mistress at a loss for words.

As if she knew what Evvy was thinking, the Headmistress made a valiant attempt at a smile.

"Enjoy this term Evadne, and always remember your friends."

Evvy looked at her headmistress blankly before making the regulation curtsey and leaving.

***

Once Evvy had left Miss Annersley remained staring at the door for a long time.

"Please" she said, "Please don't let me fail them. Not this term."

I hope Evvy is able to prove herself a good head girl.

Evvy, was desperate to talk to her friends about her strange conversation with the Head, but Margia and Elsie weren't here anymore. They had all known this for an entire term before it happened. Elsie was the oldest, and Margia needed more time for her music. But somehow the three girls who were left, had really noticed the gap, and sadly Evvy was starting to see a gap forming between them too. They were lost without their leader, and things that they could have talked about they couldn't talk about anymore. How could they reminisce or joke, without their other two?

As she made her way towards the hall for assembly she thought about the term to come. How could she lead the school, when she could hardly get up the courage to talk to her friends?

She entered the hall which was loud with chatter in at least seven languages.

“We saved you a seat” said Ilonka, her dark eyes unnaturally serious.

Evvy slipped into the seat between Lonny and Corney on the Prefects side of the dais.

They had all been Prefects last term, the only other girls there were Jeanne le Cadoulec, and Polly Heriot. Both of whom had also previosuly been Prefects.

It felt awfully empty up there. She needed to say something before the silence stretched into eternity. What could she say? How was your summer? Oh no! She couldn't bring up the summer, the five of them had had three glorious weeks together in Switzerland with her parents before they had all gone their separate ways.

“It's not the same is it?” said Corney abruptly, her gaze never leaving the door where girls running down from their dormitories and the splasheries, were still coming through.

“No.” said Lonny equally solemnly.

“I have a bad feeling about this term” said Evvy, when the silence threatened to swallow them up again.

“Yes, and they will be having a ball” agreed Corney gloomily,

“I never really thought it would end.” said Ilonka.

“It's not the end” said Evadne angrily. It couldn't be.

Ilonka managed a watery smile, “No, we won't let it be, even if we have to kidnap Elsie and then all go on tour with Margia!”

Corney laughed a little, “I can hear Elsie's squawks already!”

“Shh” hissed Jeanne suddenly. The staff were starting to arrive.

Last in was the Abbess, her eyes slightly more serious than normal, though no one apart from Evvy, and one or two of the older Austrian girls noticed.

“Welcome back Girls” she said warmly, once she had alighted the Dais. “and a warm welcome to all the new girls too. Now I know that you are all interested in what Forms you are to be in this term, and Miss Stewart is going to read out the form lists momentarily.” With one accord all the girls turned to Miss Stewart nervously, “First however, I would like to welcome some new Prefects.”

The girls looked with interest at the Head, and a couple craned their necks to see who was seated in the back row of the hall.

“Our sub-prefects this term are Maria Marani and Giovanna Donati. Stacie Benson is going to continue with her job as editor of the Chaletian and she will also be one of our Prefects. Cornelia Flower is being promoted to a full Prefect. Our games prefect will be Jeanne le Cadoulec, and second Prefect will be Ilonka Barckokz.”

There was thunderous clapping. And a stunned Lonny went up to collect her badge. They had all guessed about Jeanne's promotion, but no one had known about Secind Prefect. Secretly Evvy and Corney had been hopeful for their friend, but Lonny had been convinced that it would be Polly, who apart from a rough start had had a much more responsible school career than herself.

Miss Annersley clapped her hands for silence.

“Head girl this term will be Evadne Lannis”.

The Quintette had been the only girls to know this, but no one was that surprised at the appointment, now that Hilary had left.

There was loud applause from all the girls, as the new prefects came up to join the old ones, and Evvy was given her badge.

She looked around the hall at all the girls smiling at her.

“I'll do my very best” she promised sincerely.

“Oh all high and mighty already! How can they put you in charge of us, when you behave worse than we do?”

“Betty!” hissed the girls surrounding her. Evvy went red, but with all the mistresses there, there was nothing she could do.

“Beatrice” said Miss Annersley, her voice dangerously cold. “Please come up to the Dais.”

Defiantly Betty rose.

“Please apologise to your Head girl, for your uncalled for, and infantile rudeness.”

The girls all quaked inwardly at her tone, but Betty seemed to visibly harden.

“I am waiting Beatrice”

Evvy, with her cheeks red, remained standing up awkwardly, was this how this year was going to be?

“I would be lying if I said I was sorry” said Betty, only her fast blinking eyes giving any sign that she was scared.

There was a gasp from the girls, and Miss Annersley realised this had already gone too far.

“Matron, would you please take this girl to my Study.”

* * *

“Evadne”

Evadne, turned around to see Elizabeth Arnett looking at her seriously. There was a difference in the girl, some of the hardness with which she had always acted seemed to have left her.

“I just wanted to apologise on Betty's behalf.” she had stiffened, and Evadne could see how hard this was for her to lower her pride like this, “We had a fight, and she was feeling quite sore about what you said to her earlier. I think she was surprised when you were made head girl.”

“I don't mean” she added hurriedly,”That you shouldn't have been made head girl, but just because she was so rude to you earlier, I mean she wasn't rude..”

“It's okay Elizabeth” interrupted Evvy, seeing how flushed Elizabeth was getting at having to talk to a Prefect like she wasn't the biggest nuisance in her life.

“You can't take responsibility for your friends actions” she added gently, “Betty was abominably rude today, what you can do is stand by her, and try and make her understand where she is going wrong.”

“But she won't” burst out Elizabeth before she could stop herself.

I wonder how this will play out. It's a very interesting start. I do feel sorry for the quintet broken up like this.

I've got a small amount of sympathy for Betty here. It's odd that, with all the emphasis on truthfulness, girls were expected to apologise without meaning it.

"Elsie" the voice on the other end of the telephone was abrupt. Only those who knew her well would have known that this was a sign that she was really worried.

"Margia, what is wrong?" asked Elsie. She had heard little from Margia recently. Margia had been very lucky, and she was due to start a small tour in a few months. Elsie knew her friend had been busy practicing.

"Nothing" the voice on the other end sighed. "I mean it's probably nothing, but I know my parents are both a bit worried, and Dad doesn't usually worry unless it's something to really worry about."

"Margia, what is it?" asked Elsie, slightly scared, Margia was in no way highly strung. If she was hysterical, then there was a good reason for it.

"Dad thinks Hitler is going to invade Austria, and when he does..." Margia's voice trailed off.

Elsie stiffened. Unlike most girls, she had an interest in foreign affairs, having attended a school on the Continent for so long. She had heard rumours about Adolph Hitler and his Nazis, and although it had only been at the back of her mind, it had been one of her own suspicions for a while.

"Does he think it will be soon?" asked Elsie eventually.

"Yes" said Margia, "Oh Elsie! What if something happens to Amy, or Corney or Lonny or Evvy?"

There was really nothing that Elsie could say.

"I don't suppose the school will remain open for a moment if anything starts happening. Can you imagine Madame leaving any of us in danger?"

This calmed Margia down slightly. All her pupils had the greatest respect for their old headmistress.

"Anyway any Nazi would run a mile from the school Can you imagine what Bill would say to them."

The silence at the other end, showed that Margia was still too worried to joke. Truth be told Elsie didn't exactly feel much better.

She was suddenly remembering something Evvy had written in a recent letter.

I don't think this term is going to be a good one, just a feeling I have. I think the Abbess feels the same.

Elsie had dismissed it as nerves on Evvy's part, but maybe it wasn't nerves. Maybe things were already starting to change over in Austria.

She didn't say anything though. She was just imagining things. If it was going to be so bad over in Austria, surely the British would have already stepped in.

Evvy was dreading the prefects meeting. Betty had still not backed down from her rudeness of the night before, and Evadne felt as if her authority had been taken away from her before she even started. She had seen Elizabeth this morning looking thoroughly miserable.

In some ways they reminded her of herself and Corney. Back when Corney had just started she had been well... an obnoxious pig, but after the salt caves, Cornelia had reformed, and Evadne had found herself a great friend, but to start with keeping her friend on the straight and narrow, and in some ways teaching her wrong from right, and what was acceptable behavior and what wasn't, had been hard and frustrating.

But of course Corney, had turned out great, straight as... well anything, and she had become the best friend Evvy could have dreamed of. She needed to try and explain this to Elizabeth, but how?

As if she could read her thoughts Corney came in at this moment and sat down with a heavy sigh.

"I've been thinking about Elizabeth and Betty" said Corney, when Evvy looked at her with raised eyebrows.

"Yes?" said Evvy non-commitedly.

"Well they are us again aren't they?"

Evvy grinned at her.

"I was thinking the same thing."

"So what do we do?" asked Corney.

"Well" said Evvy thinking hard, "Should we talk to them?"

"What would we say?"

"Well we shouldn't try and be all high and mighty, or all morals" said Evvy, the wheels turning in her head, "We could maybe talk to them seperately and then together?"

Corney frowned.

"I mean I will talk to Betty, if you prefer" rushed in Evvy.

"No" said Cornelia slowly, "It had better be me, I suppose, I understand her more." she grimaced, "I can't say I exactly relish it, but I suppose she had to learn not to be a... a rubberneck."

"Corney!" exclaimed her friend in mock horror.

Corney just gave her a look, which said quite clearly, don't even start, your language is ten times worse than mine when you get going.

Lonny rose to read the minutes with quiet confidence. She had been a prefect for almost a year and with Evvy and Corney sitting on either side of her she felt comfortable in her position.

"Okay," said Evvy when she sat down again, "Does anyone have anything they especially want to discuss?"

There was an uncomfortable silence.

Evvy sighed inwardly.

"I am going to talk to Elizabeth and Betty, along with Cornelia, but if any of you have any other suggestions please... suggest."

Ilonka smiled slightly, obviously realising the reason. The other prefects merely looked relieved that some sort of action was being taken.

"Now, I suppose we should vote for positions, Jeanne and myself are exempt, although Ilonka may be willing to take on a less time- consuming duty?" here she looked at her frind enquiringly.

"Yes, I'm happy to take on Stationary, or staff." she replied.

"Okay, will all of you vote please. Polly is just handing out the paper now, please put a name beside each of the jobs. Have you all got pens?"

They all murmured their assent.

Evadne turned her attention to the list of duties, but she was distracted by the noise, for apart from the rustling of paper, and the scribble of pens, and the odd murmur or giggle, their was clearly a whispered conversation going on.

She looked up and saw Maria whispering to Giovanna. Should she say something? She certainly didn't want to come across school ma'am-ish to them. Before she could decide Giovanna glanced up and caught Evvy staring at her, she went red, and the whispering died down.

"Okay, Stacie, Lonny, would you like to count the votes?"

Lonny gathered them up and the two retired to a corner. Stacie's back was almost fine, but she would still be prone to the odd twinge for the rest of her life. Smiling, and with her hair newly bobbed, she was much more carefree than when she had started at the school. Her classmates had learnt that she had a quick tongue, and a wicked sense of humour. She had never had a special friend though, although Evvy who had often stayed at Die Rosen, was almost like a sister to her, and she was good friends with Maria Marani. But Maria, who was as happy-go-lucky as they come, was good friends with everyone.

Evvy's mind had gotten as far as this whilst they were waiting for the results, there was a light conversation being carried out at the table on the relative merits of Tennis and Hockey, with Jeanne (who loved both) acting as referee. However Maria and Giovanna were deep in discussion with each other once again, and Maria's normally bright face was serious, whilst Giovanna's brows were knitted together in a most worrisome manner.

"Evvy." Evvy found herself being dragged away from her thoughts as Polly Heriot calmly shook her by the shoulders.

"Evvy. What on Earth were you thinking about there?"

"I don't think thinking is good for her." chipped in Corney lightly.

"What?" said Evvy slowly, knowing somehow that something bad was about to happen.

Behind her she heard the tinkling of breaking glass. They all rushed to the window to look out. There was smoke coming out of the room below them. In the garden there was a group of boys of about their age throwing missiles at the ground floor windows.

Corney flung the window open.

"Oy, you un-educated splay-footed, big-nosed, rabbit-brained, worms of humans. What the hell..."

Maria pulled her away from the window, still swearing, mercifully in English.

"SHUT UP CORNEY!" she shrieked, "Have you any idea who they are?"

From her vantage pint at the window Evvy could see them moving back. Somehow this attack was much scarier than the ones they had suffered from the "Mystic M"last year.

"Heil Hitler" they were shouting in unision.

They were looking at the windows, scanning to see where the outburst had come from.

Further along she could see curtains being drawn over the windows, and windows being slammed shut. She started to close their window over too, unable to take her eyes of the hooligans.

"Get back!" she screamed.

A moment later smoke filled the room, and all Evvy could hear was choking and the sound of cruel laughter as the chanting died away as they moved off.

"Cornelia Flower. what do you think you were doing there? You have just been promoted to a full Prefect. Do you know why? Because we thought we could trust you to lead the other girls responsibly. Do you think you acted in a responsible manner this evening?"

"No Miss Annersley." murmured Cornelia, feeling that this was by far her worst misdameanor yet.

"How can I expect the other girls to behave responsibly and sensibly when you, one of the girls they are supposed to look up to and respect, act like a hooligan and drag yourself down to the level of those brutes."

"Miss" said Cornelia interrupting timidly, "Who were they?"

Miss Annersley's eyes clouded over, and she turned away from Cornelia for a moment.

She looked at her charge descicively before responding.

"They are members of the Nazi movement Cornelia, a political party from Germany."

"Heil Hitler" murmured Cornelia, as recognition dawned on her.

"Don't say that!" exclaimed Miss Annersley, losing her cool.

"Cornelia" she said, her voice quiet and harsh. "You have to understand, these are not people you must not get involved with, so don't even try. Stay away from them."

Scared now, Cornelia simply nodded.

"You may leave" said Miss Annersley, appearing to have regained her calm. "Please send Evadne to me."

"Oh Miss Annersley. Please don't give Evvy into trouble it wasn't her fault I shouted out." cried Cornelia.

"Please go Cornelia." said Miss Annersley quietly.

Looking closer to tears than she had at any other point in the interview Cornelia left the room.

What had she done, she had scared Cornelia completely unnecessarily there. No, she thought, she needed to tell her Prefects and her staff at least, no matter what Jem said. Things had just gotten far to serious tonight. The Nazi invasion had as good as begun.

A bit more... Thanks for all the comments.

"Betty" hissed Elizabeth beside herself with rage.

"What?" asked Betty defiantly, "I told you I would get my revenge on you and I did!"

"Betty" said Elizabeth so quietly, only the named girl could hear, "What happened to you? Convincing those thugs to smash our windows..."

"You care about this school more than you care about me, how dare you?" screamed Betty, alerting everyone in their common room to their conversation.

"Shut up Betty." said petite Biddy O'ryan angrily, "You leave Elizabeth alone. 'Tis a shame you ever came to this school if you ask me."

"Oh be quiet." stormed Betty, "And stop that stupid brogue, it's so overdone you seem like quite the pathetic, low-born idiot you are."

There was a silence in the common room.

Biddy was staring at Betty open-mouthed, as one single silent tear rolled down her cheek.

"I hate you." she managed.

"Yeah Betty" burst out the normally quiet Emmie Linders to everyone's surprise. "you should think before you speak. You have no idea what you did tonight."

"Oh i'm so scared." said Betty scathingly, trying not to let the hurt enter her voice.

"You should be" said Alixe von Elsen quietly. "They were Nazi's you recruited."

Betty looked at her once friend uncomprehendingly, "So..."

"They killed my brother."

There was a silence. Betty broke it.

"Shut up" she said brashly, "Stop making up stories, and trying to scare us."

No one could quite bring themselves to look at Betty, or Alixe. But with one accord Betty was shunned by all the girls who were in the commonroom that night.

"Why me?" asked Elizabeth crankily.

The girls had all given Betty a wide berth since that incident earlier in the evening, and now Elizabeth was the lone leader.

Her and Betty had always led the other middles by the nose, they were attractive, loud, funny, mischievous girls, and even if they had had to resort to bullying once or twice they had always had the forms support.

Now that Betty was being scorned, the girls were looking to Elizabeth to lead them and tell them what to do. But she was not a leader. Not now, now that she knew there was something wrong with her- she had made her friend become this monster. She had never tried to help her, until now. When she was too late.

Elizabeth thinks of the mad things and Betty does them with frills on

Was she really the brains behind this... this horrible girl. Had this girl ever been her friend? Was she like Betty?

"Elizabeth please you have to help Alixe." pleaded Biddy, breaking in on her thoughts.

"What can I do?" she asked coldly.

They were all looking at her, expecting her to solve their problems, help Alixe, tame Betty, and probably cap it all off with some ridiculous joke.

How could she lead them the way they wanted to be lead- she was no leader, or at least she was- but clearly not for the better.

What had she done.

Oh, God, what had she done to make Betty do this?

"Maria, may I talk to you please?" asked Evadne as she spotted the girl going in the opposite direction.

"Me?" asked Maria quietly, her eyes not quite meeting Evvy's.

"Yes you, what other Maria's do you know?" teased Evvy gently.

Maria just flushed.

Evvy flushed to, why couldn't she have shown some tact?

"I'm sorry" she said, trying again, "There's just something I want to ask you about."

Maria looked her straight in the eye for a moment, before once again turning away.

"I don't know what you are talking about." she muttered.

"Maria, please just come up to my room at Mittagessen." implored Evadne.

Maria slowly nodded, before turning and walking away.

"Biddy what is wrong?" Emmie's dark brown eye's bored into Biddy's drab face.

"Nothing" murmured Biddy.

"Biddy, you are my closest friend I know there is something wrong."

Biddy looked up suddenly, as if she was about to say something, but thought better of it.

"Biddy" begged Emmie, "Please talk to me... we, we may not get a chance to again any time soon."

"What do you mean?" asked Biddy momentarily aroused from her own sorrows.

"Oh Biddy! Me and Joanna, we are going to have to leave." said Emmie tearfully, "Please! You mustn't tell anyone. I shouldn't even have told you."

"Leave" said Biddy stupidly, "Leave where?"

"Leave here Biddy, Leave the Chalet school!"

"But.. but why?" asked Biddy, unable to understand.

"Why? Because of the Nazi's."

"You mean..."

Biddy trailed off, and the two young girls impulsively held each other close, trapped in a war they didn't yet understand, but in which they were to be the victims.

Eeek. This is getting really rather scary. Poor Elizabeth, feeling the responsibility for Betty. And oh Betty, what have you done? She really doesn't realise the seriousness but surely she should know she's done something very very wrong.

Evadne was sitting on her bed, in the pretty bedroom allocated to the Head girl. She knew it was against the rules but she needed to talk to Maria, and privately too.

She checked her watch again impatiently, it was seeming unlikely that Maria was going to turn up.

Evvy sighed, there was something very wrong, you could just kind of feel it in the air. Even going down to Spartz or Innsbruck was the same. It was like trying to move in a deep mist, something was wrong but she didn't know what.

Some of the girls knew she was sure of it. She was shrewd enough to note that the German and Austrian girls- especially the older ones- were much jumpier and quieter than normal.

And if she had to interrogate Maria to find out why, then so be it.

There was a soft knock on the door, interrupting her thoughts.

"Come in" she called, "Finally, Maria what took you.. Corney!"

"What?" said Corney looking at her blankly.

"Corney what are you doing up here?" asked Evadne annoyed.

"Looking for you, you goose, is it a bad time?"

"Well yeah, it kind of is" admitted Evadne.

"Its just that there's a notice in hall, the Abbess wants to see all of us Prefects tonight."

"What?" asked Evvy startled, "Whatever for?"

"I don't know" said Corney dismissively, "But thats not the real reason I came to see you Evvy."

Corney was standing awkwardly, one leg rubbing up and down the other, the way she invariably did when pulled up in front of the head for something.

"Whats wrong?" asked Evadne suddenly concerned.

"Well, I know things have been a bit weird recently, but ever since the Abbess gave me into trouble, and told me I was a bad prefect I've been trying really hard to prove myself decent, if you know what I mean..."

Cornelia looked really awkward so Evadne just nodded and allwed her to carry on.

"Well, I know you haven't really had a chance, but I remembered what we were talking about, before that happened and so I thought I would go and talk to Betty."

Here she paused again. Evvy looked guilty, she had been so caught up in that night that she had completely forgotten about Elizabeth and Betty.

"And well Evvy there's something seriously wrong!" burst out Cornelia, "And not just with Betty but with the whole fourth. I had them for prep last night and I was a bit early, and I don't know what has happened but something has! Emmie Linders seems to be their leader now! Little quiet Emmie, and suddenly Biddy has gone all quiet. Our Biddy- silent! And she's making a real effort to cut out her brogue, and I know thats a good thing. But it's just like we have never wanted or been able to stop our 'twang'! We just wouldn't want to, and surely it's the same for Biddy? And Elizabeth and Betty aren't talking. In fact I think everyones stopped talking to Betty. I know what she did to you was wrong Evvy, but surely they wouldn't send her to coventry for that? I dunno I really can't help but think something was very wrong. And Evvy! Not one trick, not a single one! I had the fourth for prep and I didn't have to give a single person into trouble- Evvy it's just not natural."

An eventual update! Sorry for the delay, but there is more to follow...

Hilda Annersley lowered herself into her chair slowly. She had officially been head mistress of the Chalet School for just over a year now, and she felt less than equipped to deal with the situations arising within and outwith the school. There was little she could do for the latter, but she was disappointed with herself for her lack of decision and control regarding events happening in the school: her school.

She sighed, her usual composure was decidedly lacking, with the knowledge that she was failing at her job. Just then her door burst open, interrupting her despondent thoughts.

"Excuse me!" exclaimed Hilda, very much on her dignity, "Oh it's you Nell. What are you doing battering your way in here like that?"

"Hilda, He's invaded. Austria has fallen." Nell gasped.

Hilda stared at her friend bewildered and uncomprehending.

"We're living in Hitler's Greater Reich." Nell concluded.

"It can't be, how did you find out Nell?"

"It's all over the wireless. Propaganda talk."

Hilda swallowed.

"Do the girls know?"

"They are at Abendessen."

"Okay" said Hilda slowly.

"Well Hilda what are you going to do?"

“I don't know” admitted Hilda.

Nell just looked at her, they were only in their twenties both just young women.

Hilda straightened up in her chair, although her eyes still held that dazed look.

“I shall call for Evadne, and cancel our meeting this evening. The prefects can take all the girls for dancing after Abendessen, and we shall have a meeting in the staffroom. All the staff must be involved. I shall try and telephone Madge, but you know what it is like trying to get a connection up to the Sonnalpe at times.”

“Yes Hilda” agreed Nell for once meekly.

“I expect it shall be fine Nell. I doubt Hitler will want to become entangled with us at this stage. We are multinational.” said Hilda briskly

“I expect that is what will draw attention to ourselves.” was Nell's pessimistic reply.

“Undoubtedly.” agreed Hilda, “but it also ought to serve us some protection.”

“I hope so.” was Nell's fervent reply.

Thanks for all the comments, if there are any innacuracies in the history/ timeline of this drabble please let me know...

Margia dropped the sheaf of music that was in her arms, and stared at the newspaper sitting on the table, with it's glaring headline.

"No!" she shrieked, "Father! Father come here."

Mr Stephens ran into the room.

"Margia, what is it?"

"Austria Father."

"I know dearest, I know."

And Margia suddenly noticed the worry lines across his face.

"But Amy, what will you do?"

"She will come home with you in May when you tour Vienna and Innsbruck."

"May! That's almost a month away Father."

"I know but there is no real way to get her away any quicker, and with your Mother so ill it will have to be you that looks after her. It may yet all come to nothing Margia."

"You don't believe that Father, I know you don't!" accused Margia. "We must go at once, I'll cancel my tour, i'll cancel everything. Oh and Corney and Evvy and what about Lonny? Will they let her go? Oh Father, we must go at once."

"Germany is not going to pick a fight with Britain at this stage Margia. No it is best to keep to this plan. The night after you play in Vienna we will come to Innsbruck, and go up to Spartz. Cornelia and Evadne have powerful American Fathers they will be alright too."

Of Ilonka and her eastern European background nothing was mentioned, and fearful of the answer Margia did not ask again.

* * *

Elsie Carr folded the newspaper solemnly. The journalist had seemed disinterested, and it seemed that only a lack of other news had made Austria front page news. She shuddered. How could her own country sit back and do nothing? Did no one but herself understand Hitler's intentions?

She knew that she was only a girl, enough people had mentioned that fact, for it eventually to sink in that her opinion meant precious little. But nonetheless she was right and she knew it, this was not just a small storm that would blow over in the night, as everyone seemed to think.

Her thoughts turned as they so often had in the last couple of days to the Chalet School. To her own special friends Corney, and Evvy and Lonny, but also to everyone else she had been to school with. What would happen to her school? Perhaps, she thought hopefully, it really all would blow over in a couple of months. If only she hadn't been to school out there, then like everyone else she knew she could have been so blissfully ignorant and uncaring about a small nation so far from home.

"Maria! Maria Marani!" yelled Evadne, completely forgetting the sensibilities required of a head girl. It was lucky for her the corridor was empty- both of girls and of mistresses.

"Evadne." said Maria defiantly.

"Come on Maria. Talk to me. What is wrong?" Evadne grabbed the younger girl's arm, and dragged her towards the side door leading outside.

"Evvy what do you want me to say?" asked Maria heavily, "Do you want to know about the Nazi's, what can I tell you? Austria is now part of Hitler's great Reich. It is only a matter of time before Papa is asked to remove me from the school. It is only a matter of time before the school ends- it will not remain here in a country like this. Do you not wander why we have not been down to Innsbruck or even Spartz this term? When I went home last weekend we had to shut all the windows and draw the curtains because they were beating Jew's out in the street."

"Who were?" asked Evadne.

"Not even the real Nazi's." Maria laughed bitterly, "This was the Hitler Youth, boy's and girls younger than us. They were out recruiting a few weeks ago, If I was just a bit younger I would have to have joined. As it is it they made The Rincini's promise to send Anita. Giovanna's little sister will be trained to shout Heil Hitler and to march, to hate books and learning, to hate any whom are unlike her, and to believe that Austria was weak to fall so easily, and that Germany is the almighty."

"Why did Herr Rinicini agree to this?" asked Evadne angrily.

"You do not understand Evvy."

"No you're right I don't!" she shouted.

"It's like a plague, it may not infect you because you are American, but it will crawl under your skin, and nestle there ready to rear it's ugly head. It will get me. It will put the fear of everything into me of life and of death and it will get me. if I do not succumb, it will attack those near to me with thrice it's usual ferocity. It will get me. Papa does not know how much I know but we live in a big city and it has become much quicker infected than the countryside out here. I am not to go home again this term. I will stay with Gisela at half-term."

"Is it really that bad Maria?" asked Evadne, secretly hoping her friend had shown a flair for the dramatic.

"Yes."

Hey, sorry the updates are so far apart. Well heres another bit. Thanks for all the comments.

"Jack!" cried out Jo, with a grin, as her old friend sauntered past, whistling, and oblivious to her prescence.

Unsurprisingly, he jumped, since Jo was nestled comfortably in a tree above him.

"Jo?" he called, "Where the hell are you?"

Jo scrambled out of the tree, and landed with a thump beside him, grinning and disshevelled.

"Language Jack, tut tut!"

"Sorry Jo" he said flustered, his face reddening, "I just wasn't expecting your voice to come from above."

"I'm just teasing you Jack. Since when did you flush up like that at a simple teasing?" asked Jo.

"Ha ha" was Jack's dry and witty retort. "May I ask just what you were doing in a tree? If you don't mind my asking your twenty-year old grown-up self?" he plucked a stray twig out of her hair.

Despite herself Jo found herself blushing rather brightly too. Quickly she turned away.

"Madge and Jem have been arguing, and I've been looking after the babes all day. Sybil and Rix have been fighting worse than ever since Sybil boxed Rix's ears and only the fact that she's a girl has stopped Rix from starting a free for all with her. It has not been a fun day. When Robinette said she would look after the kid's for a couple of hours I just fled. I couldn't cope anymore. So I ended up up there." and she pointed at the tree.

"I see" said Jack, "well now that you are down do you fancy a walk?"

"Okay" agreed Jo easily, "I have to admit I don't find trees half so comfy as I used too."

"You're getting old." mocked Jack.

"I hope not." said Jo fervently, "at least i'm not half so old as you are though!"

"Don't you worry your bones will start creaking soon enough too." said Jack easily, refusing to rise.

"Jack can I ask you something?" asked Jo, coming to a halt suddenly.

"Yes" said Jack, a hopeful look coming to his eyes, although Jo did not notice.

"What is going to happen to the School and the San, and all our friends?"

"Oh Jo ermm, I'm sure everything will be alright don't you worry about it." he said, taking her hand in his.

Jo wrenched her hand away angrily. "Jack don't mollycoddle me. I get more than enough of that in the house, I don't need it from my friends as well. Or am I not a friend, just one of your tiresome charges you have to look after."

Jack looked at her sadly, "Yes Jo... I am your friend. You know I'll always be here."

"Jack I'm just so sick of being called delicate, as if I have some disease and i'll drop off and faint at every opportunity. I'm not being ungrateful, really i'm not but I can't stand it for much longer! "

"Well there's lots of things we all can't stand." said Jack slowly.

"Like what? What's your thing Jack?" asked Jo, "You have your own home, you make your own decisions, you are pursueing a career."

"Nobody's life is perfect Jo." he said, with that same little sad smile, only Jo noticed it this time.

And whatever Jo's imperfections she did care about her friends. "What's wrong Jack?" she asked, this time with no hostility.

"Nothing, Jo really. Just.."

"yes?" asked Jo, real concern on her face.

Jack hesitated for a moment looking at her. She was twenty now, an adult, they were alone, maybe just maybe she might care for him, even a tiny bit.

"It's just all this political stuff Jo, it's enough to make anyone jumpy."
