Post subject:  DISCUSSION: Comfort songs

Does anyone - I'm sure you have - have a song or artist they listen to when they need to be lifted out of a certain mood, or want to feel private and comforted, or want to dance like a dervish? I've a few varied ones right now. I've lost the music thread, and I'd like to hear other people's recommendations.

I've just listened to a few. Here are the ones that come to mind. I will add more. It's very late and I'm not being a good mummy by still being up, so I'll add some later:

Mary Black - Columus, and lots more
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now, The Last Time I Saw Richard, Blue, Chelsea Morning, River (so many others)
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes
The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out (the obvious choice but I like lots)
The Stranglers - Golden Brown
Procol Harem - A Whiter Shade of Pale
Ten cc - Dreadlock Holiday (makes me dance!)
Supertramp - The Logical Song
The Tragically Hip - Nautical Disaster
The Kingsman - Louie Louie
Noel Harrison - The Windmills of your mind
Leonard Cohen/Nina Simone - Suzanne
David Bowie - Let's Dance
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
The Cure - Pictures of You
The Cure - Lovesong
The Beautiful South - The Prettiest Eyes
Pretty in Pink - by whom? Memory has flattened and folded itself into a very small space, sorry.

And so much more. But I am looking for other people's thoughts. I'd like some new music!

Minha Galera by Manu Chao never fails to cheer me up no matter how many times I listen to it. Actually pretty well everything by Manu Chao makes me happy but I like that one best.

Have just managed to wipe everything EVERYTHING off my MP3 player so cannot console myself with my favourite songs during my 'lunch' break :x

REM Everybody hurts. Even though it sound depressing, it sort of makes me feel less alone, and that's cheering.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the name of. It's a very good venting song...

Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
The Bangles - Eternal Flame
Meat Loaf - 2 out of 3 ain't bad
Madonna - Like a prayer
Phil Collins - Do you remember
Elvis Presley - Can't help falling in love
The Beatles - Yesterday
Abba - The winner takes it all
Bon Jovi - Always
Guns 'n' Roses - November Rain
Oasis - Don't look back in anger
Will Young - Leave right now
Forgotten the original singer but Westlife covered it - You raise me up

Some of them are depressing, but they make me feel better!

Catherine, I like The Smiths' There's a light that never goes out as well - glad you mentioned it because most people don't ever seem to've heard of it! I adapted the title of it for the title of my first drabble of 2006! & I love the video because it's filmed all round my local area :D .

Ooh, and Purple Rain. And I used to love Raspberry Beret as a kiddy because it was on one of the Now or Hits albums, though I don't think I could have got the ruder inferences.

CatherineS, Pretty in Pink is by the Psychedelic Furs, and Raspberry Beret was on Hits 6, because I had it too and adored the song!!!!

Comfort songs for me are:
Anything by Joni Mitchell works for me too
'Crystal' by Stevie Nicks
'Losing You' Dusty Springfield
'The Swimmer' Sleater-Kinney
Anything by the Divine Comedy

Hmmm, Divine Comedy aside, something about female singers going on there!!!

Dancing songs are:
'I Want You Back' by the Jackson 5
'Come on' by Client
'Hot Topic' by Le Tigre

Cheering Songs:
'I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free', ''Ain't Got No, I Got Life', or indeed anything by Nina Simone
'Glory Days' Pulp
'The Drinking Song' The Divine Comedy

Angry song is 'Deceptacon' by Le Tigre!

Ooh. What a super idea CatherineS! Now let me see...

Basically anything by Crowded House - there's a song for every mood in their catalogue!
Split Enz - I Hope I Never, Nobody Takes Me Seriously Anyway
Ella Fitzgerald singing Gershwin, Porter or Berlin
Electric Light Orchestra - Don't Bring Me Down, Turn To Stone, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Mr Blue Sky
Pink Floyd - the whole of both the albums, Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon
U2 - mostly their older stuff from the early-mid Eighties
Supertramp - The Logical Song
Queen
Paul Kelly
Kirsty MacColl and the Pogues - Fairytale of New York
Sarah McLachlan
Clannad

erk. That's quite a lot already. And I always always turn to Chris Isaak when I need real comfort.

The Psychadelic Furs! That's it! Thank-you. And I love exactly those Nina Simone songs, too.

Songs that I have played on repeat whilst looking wistfully out of the window:
Fresh Feeling by Eels
To The End by Blur
Next Year by Foo Fighter
Crash and Burn by Savage Garden
She Left On A Monday by Bic Runga
I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton
I Hope You Dance by LeeAnn Womack
Us by Regina Spektor
At My Most Beautiful by REM

Songs I have played on repeat whist leaping round the room:
Beep by The Pussycat Dolls (oh the shame)
Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Baba O'Riley by The Who
Born To Make You Happy by Britney Spears
The Call by Backstreet Boys
Does Your Mother Know? by ABBA

Songs I have cooked to:
Party For Two by Shania Twain
Flashdance (What A Feeling) and Maniac from the Flashdance soundtrack
Elephant Love Medley from Moulin Rouge (this only works if you're cooking with someone and they're prepared to take the part of Nicole and harmonise with you as you pretend to be Ewan)
Me And Julio Down By The School Yard by Paul Simon
Elenor by Robson and Jerome (again, you need a cooking partner for this)

Me too except that my jumping round the room songs tend to be anything by The Pipettes or 'Dragostea Din Tei' by O-Zone (can't believe I've just admitted that). Or has anyone else heard 'So Good' by Bratz. It's a disturbingly catchy song!

If I'm feeling really down, I tend to head towards Suzanne Vega and normally one of the early ones ('Suzanne Vega', 'Solitude Standing' or 'Days of Open Hand'). Or maybe some mid-90's Indigo Girls - 'Closer to Fine' being the track that first springs to mind.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun and True Colours by Cindy Lauper. At the other end of the spectrum, when I'm feeling glum, there are a few things by Radiohead that do the trick, like No Surprises on OK Computer - lots more of that.

REM - Most of Automatic for the People and I love Stand (I think that's what it's called - anyhoos, I jump about to it!)

Pure - The Lightning Seeds
Runaway Train - Haven't listened to that in ages and I can't remember who it's by. That was a favourite of yore.

Turn Around - Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson

Moonlight Shadow - Am I imagining it or is that Mike Oldfield? I was really into him for a while and am connecting it with a video of his.

I'm just realising that I have hardly any of my old music now. My husband's rather lugubrious taste in music has edged out all my fun fluffy music! I must put a halt to that!

Fairytale of New York is one of my favourites, too, It just makes me feel ALL RIGHT. And is one of the pop songs that nudges me in the direction of thinking about what's really important in life.

That's one of those albums where there just isn't a bad number in it!

Venting:

Erm, Eminem! Specifically "America"
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morisette

Happy Songs:

"Kinderly" - Mediaeval Baebes
"Touch My Button" - Suga Babes

These songs/music feel like a prayer to me - sometimes I listen to them and it feels like I'm praying:
Carl Orff - Rundadinella
James - One of the Three

Good Lord that's eclectic!

There's a lot of the Suga Babes (is that how you spell it) I quite like to in a dance about way, although I don't have any of it and slocy would probably see it as grounds for divorce if I did.

ETA: Johnny Cash and The Man Comes Around for a kick up the bottom in life!

Oh no! I hope I haven't spoiled it for you. But the good part is that I read they did find some of those kids off the back of the video and I like to think of that.

My absolute comfort music is Christmas music- generally of the classical or Bing Crosby persuasion- I had an abusive wrong number call the other day and was all shaken up about it, so came up to my room and was soothed by Pandora's Classical Christmas selection.

For those other times when I need music whilst I'm leaping/cooking/having a great music battle with my housemates I love:

The Divine Comedy
The Who
Belinda Carlisle (Runaway Horses- oh and We Want the Same Thing)
LMNT (Hey Juliet- don't knock it till you've tried it)
Shania Twain
Bette Midler
Bing Crosby
Kate Rusby
The Runaway Bride Soundtrack
'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynryd Skynyrd
'I Love This Bar' (actually the best song ever written- bless you Toby Keith)
'The Disney Parade' ( I bet within a very small amount of time Lizzie will add this to *her list.)
Dolly Parton
Hanson (yes their NEW albumn. I own it and I'm proud)
The Beach Boys
The Parent Trap Soundtrack

Oh and I saw Stuart Townend in concert last weekend with Lou Fellingham supporting- he was amazing- and that really made me happy...

Not at all! That's wonderful to hear that some of the kids were found. It was upsetting - definetely - and I think I'm finding things to do with kids even more gut-wrenching right now because my hormones are still a bit all over the place. It was the juxtaposition of that beautiful bright-eyed baby in the video with all the horrors around it. I just see my own children in every baby, so it brings home properly how nasty life can be and how the innocent can suffer. It was an effective video and thanks for taking the time to find the link for me. Besides, sometimes it's good to be reminded how easy you have it, really.

At the moment I really like "Grown Up Christmas List" by Amy Grant as it's lyrics highlight what, to me, Christmas is supposed to be about and it has a calming melody. If you don't know the lyrics, they are currently in the second post down on my blog.

It depends on whether I really want to be cheered up or just wallow in it and get it out of my system.

'Red, Red Wine' by Neil Diamond is good for wallowing. Also almost any real old blues songs.

For a boost 'Sisters' by Annie Lennox or Electric Light Orchestra.

#2 daughter and I both do our serious housework to Meatloaf

Stuart just seems to go fromstrength to strength. He is one of our partner artists, and Lou is great isnt she? I was with UCB in Carberry, Edinburgh, last September, when she played.
