Margot sobbed, wounded to the quick by the scorn in her friend’s voice. “But Emmy, we can’t!”

Emerence looked at Margot and felt the smart of shame. “You’re a coward,” she said, nonetheless, and turned her back arrogantly. Here she saw the tall person of Mary-Lou striding up the slope, and that decided her. No-one would tell Emerence Hope what to do! She slid off on the toboggan. The crystal air delighted her, and she laughed aloud.

Margot cried out, desolately, swayed, and then fainted gracefully, her delicate features as pale as the snow, which cradled her in a soft embrace.

Emerence looked back momentarily, and the sight of that small form, clad in blue, at the top of the run smote her: inadvertently she pulled hard on the rope, swinging round the toboggan, and it hit the hidden snag! She was hurled from her seat, across the edge of the run, and straight into Mary-Lou’s arms.

Alas! As ill-fortune would have it, Mary-Lou and her burden were flung against a pine tree and rendered unconscious. Their friends wept, and Miss O’Ryan, beloved preceptress, was hard put not to swoon at the sight of such calamity. “No,” she said to herself, “I must be strong.” She skied as quickly as she could towards the sad group around the tree, and helped Viola to turn over the older girl. She was lying so still and senseless that it seemed as though she were dead. A snowflake lay on her long eyelashes, slowly melting.

“Oh, Mary-Lou!” said Viola, in horror, and crumpled to the ground.

Oooooh, intriguing!

Am guessing romantic novelist of a Cartland flavour? I've not read anything she's written, mind, so may be way off beam just going by reputation.

Wonder if anyone will do a Jilly Cooper version?

I was indeed attempting Barbara Cartland (though unfortunately only having read one of her books!).
