In vain did Miss Maynard attempt to dissuade her friend Miss Hope from carrying out her proposed course of action. Miss Hope, seeing Miss Trelawney approaching, realised that she had not an instant to lose in setting off, crying as she went on her way that Miss Maynard was become very dull.

The toboggan descended the hill at great speed, and Miss Maynard did shriek very loudly, attracting the attention of a goodly number of people. Many of them made as if to rush to the assistance of Miss Hope and her companions; but Mademoiselle de Lachennais called on them to remain where they were in such tones of a nature so forceful that they obeyed without a further thought.

Miss Trelawney, continuing on her way, did urge Miss Hope to steer to the right: her scheme was to protect the other young ladies even if she could not save the unfortunate Miss Hope. The folly of her actions did then suddenly strike Miss Hope: alas, however, by that time she could do but little. The toboggan was brought to an uneven patch of ground, which it struck forcefully. Miss Hope was flung against Miss Trelawney, and Miss Trelawney was perforce flung against the trunk of a great tree.

Miss O’Ryan, sick with horror, made haste to the scene of the accident, by which time Miss Lucy, with great strength and zeal, had removed the person of Miss Hope from that of her friend Miss Trelawney. Miss Maynard had recovered her senses and was approaching likewise: her face was pallid and she did weep bitterly.

The poor figure of Miss Trelawney was taken up by Miss O’Ryan and Miss Lucy, and great indeed was their agony on beholding her. She moved not; she breathed not; her
countenance was like death itself.

Miss Alison, I must inform you that I was greatly diverted by your lively account of this unfortunate happenstance. I would be most pleased should you be moved to continue in the manner of Miss Austen throughout the course of this month's folly.

Hmm, who could you be imitating? :)
Well done for avoiding the obvious first line. I'm not sure I could have.
