I took time to make sure O'Ryan was well aware of me and the sled-load behind me before I set off, and then made the planned over-steer to the left before tipping the whole lot over into the snow, just at the right place. I could feel the cold, wet, crunchy stuff on my face and in my clothes as I landed, and tried to keep clear of the scything limbs of the girls. As O'Ryan made her way down the slope towards me, the target went further up. O'Ryan turned too quickly though, and it looked as if she might get there too soon, but her ski caught and she went over. Now it all depended on Trelawney getting her timing and positioning right.

And suddenly it all started to go wrong. For no obvious reason, Maynard stood up off the sled before it started moving, throwing out all the calculations about the necessary momentum before the target hit the obstruction. Maynard's going to have some explaining to do later.

Trelawney was making her way up the slope as fast a she could go, getting far too close to the buried tree, yelling at the target - I couldn't hear what , but I could see clearly enough that the sled was still on course, or near enough.

The sled hit the buried tree, but instead of being thrown head-first into the snow or a tree, the target, Hope, hit Trelawney first. I could see the horror in Trelawney's face as she realised what was happening... just before she hit the trunk of the pine tree. She lay, senseless and unmoving, on the snow.

Well, I like this one as well as the others.

Me too! Although I wish the sled had exploded on impact - isn't that what usually happens in spy novels? (Possibly it only happens in the terrible B-grade ones that I read :D)

Any guesses as to author?

I did have a particular one in mind (and had to do a bit of re-reading to remind myself how that author writes).

John le Carre? I like that Emerence was the traget for some "accident"! Thanks, Cat.

I'm flattered, but haven't read a great deal of Le Carre (started the Constant Gardener but didn't get on with it very well).

This is more low-rent, really - but I did read two trilogies by the author, albeit nearly twenty years ago.

Speaking of low rent, I'm now wondering about a speed-read of a popular author with a view to a parody here. Hmmmmmm.

Thanks. It's amazing how many of these are turning out completely different to EBD and having such a sinister turn!

That's the one! (I hope it wasn't only the mention of two trilogies that gave it away...)
