#1: A Responsible Quintette
(completed 25/3 p.3 ) Author: brie, Location: GlasgowPosted: Mon Jul 24, 2006
11:21 pm Awful drabble title i know, if anyone can think of any thing
different/ better please offer up! This is a tale of the quintettes time as
prefects- strictly speaking they shouldn't all be prees at the same time which
is why I have put the drabble in this house.
Miss Annersley stood
up at the end of abendessen to make an announcement. This in itself was strange,
and the girls all hushed instantly, and stared expectantly attheir headmistress.
"As you all know girls, two of our prefects had to leave suddenly at
half term for family reasons, therefore I am proud to welcome Cornelia Flower as
a new sub-prefect, and Ilonka Barkocz is to become a full prefect."
Corney had been sitting at a table of mainly fifth and sixth formers,
and by grace of thir age they were allowed to sit unsupervised. At the time of
this announcement Corney had dismayedly realised that she had dropped her
handkerchief, and throughout the heads speech she had been fishing for it with
her foot. The result of this was that when her name was called she got such a
surprise that her whole chair overturned and she landed squat on the floor. And
so it had been a red faced Corney, with her chin stuck stubbornly out who had
gone up to the head to receive her badge.
Hilda Annersley, along with
the rest of her staff was trying to keep a straight face, and though she
succeeded, she did jab cornelia with the pin from the badge. This caused Corney
to jump and let out a yowl reminiscent of a cat being strangled. She later said
she had been trying to keep quiet, and had managed to bite her tongue when she
jumped, but whatever the reason the school could no longer keep its laughter
under control despite the threat of the full staff and prefects. Their laughter
rang around the walls. This was too much for Corney. Thoroughly disgruntled she
lost control of her temper.
"Of all the splay-footed.."
But here
her friends intervened, Evvy and Margia launched themselves at Corney and
dragged her down to sit between them.

12:54 pm Miss
Annersley, Corney reflected, was an absolute gem. Imagine thinking of that!
Lonny with her arm linked chummily through Cornelias was thinking exactly the
saem thing. Presently she spoke, "Don't you see what I mean Corney, two
years ago no one in their right mind would have even dreamed of that, but now
that we are responsible we can all be together. Don't you like being trusted?"
Corneys eyes gleamed, "I think you're right Lonny, I have never really
been trusted till now, remember when we were middles we were allowed to go off
by ourselves but you always knew that the mistresses and the prees had a special
eye on us."
Lonny grinned, "Can you blame them?"
"No of course
not, we were fabulously wicked weren't we?"
"I don't know if 'were' is
the right word to use, did you see the look in margias eye last night?"
"Didn't i just. That dreamy look always meant trouble for us! well at
least we wont have the prees on our backs this time" the two giggled at this,
"Lonny, do you know what, i dont think we should tell the others, lets
just move all my stuff up to green dormitory like we are meant to be, and just
not tell the others. Won't they get a surprise when they find me heading up
there with them? Or gee, maybe I should go up before you all and jump out from
behind the cubey curtain!"
Lonny grinned widely "Well I suppose. their
faces would definetly be worth it "
Corney frowned suddenly, "Its not
really pree- like though is it? I should be all responsible and grave, shouldn't
I? "
"hmmm... well no one shall know about it apart form us lot, we are
the only ones in that dormy now, and we know for a fact that you are not all
responsible and grave, no matter how well you can act in front of the kids."
Corney glared at her "For your information, Ilonka, I can act
responsibly if i want to"
"You just don't choose to.."
Corney
was about to retort that Ilonka was no better, when they were interrupted.
"Girls may I ask what you are doing? Look at all those clothes! Has no
one taught you how to fold your clothes Cornelia?"
cornelia went red,
and ilonka pursed her lips to stop herself from laughing. Matey of course saw
this,
"Not of course that Ilonka here would be of much help, she can't
keep her own drawers tidy, so she certainly shouldn't be the girl helping you
Cornelia. Perhaps you should continue on you own.."
She left this dire
threat hanging in the air, and both girls scrambled to tidy and fold and sort
the mess of belongings heaped on Corneys old bed. Matey left them, wondering if
the quintette would ever really grow up, and wondering if perhaps she should
check Hildas temperature to make sure she didn't have a fever. Imagine putting
all five of them together, gently shaking her head Matey went on about her
business.

5:24 pm Meanwhile, out in the gardens, Margia, Elsie and Evvy were
stretched out luxuriously.
"Right Elsie, look out for corney will you?"
"Why? Since when have we been responsible for Corneys doings?"
"You nincompoop, I don't want to see her!"
Evvy and Elsie
exchanged glances. Evvy shoved a hand on Margias forehead, "nope no temp"
Margia, glared and pushed her hand away. "evvy you clown! Do you want
the middles to see you acting like that?"
"Relax Madame Prudent, they
all ought to be over at St. Clares"
Margia rolled her eyes, "So perhaps
prudent wasn't the best choice of words, but you knew what i meant, are you lot
never going to let that go?"
"Never" chorused elsie and evvy. Elsie
continued "It would have been bad enough had you been describing even the
meekest person in the school, but you? Evvy? Never."
She ducked as a
book was swung at her by Evvy, "You leave me out of this, your no prude yourself
you know."
Margia rolled her eyes. "This isn't getting us anywhere. I've
been thinking..."
Evvy and Elsie glanced at each other again. Margia had
always been the brains behind them, and her 'thinking' invariably meant them
getting lines, or being docked pocket money or some other horrible punishment.
"Whats the prank?" said Elsie eventually.
"how did you know it
was a prank? It could have been anything... like how we can do better at
lessons, or reform evvy and corneys language or something."
"Do you want
my help or not?" asked Evvy with raised eyebrows.
Margia immediately
looked angelic. "I just thought it would be fun to hold an initiation ceremony
for Corney..."
"What?"
"When?"
"Margia, all that musics
gone to your head"
"What?" asked Margia innocently, "Can't you see her
face if we crept into her cubey and gave her a surprise welcoming?"
Evvys face lit up, " Don't they normally make people complete a task
during one of those ceremonies?"
The dreamy look came back to Margias
eyes.
"I think you two are forgetting a few things. A- we are prees now,
we cant just pull of mad stunts whenever we feel like it and B- even if we
could, and were willing to get caught being out after lights out Corneys not
even in the same dormey as us"
Evvys face was downcast, Elsie was right
of course.
"Don't be such a wet blanket Elsie, the other prees weren't
perfect, there's no need for us to be. We are allowed to have a little fun."
evvy was smiling again this sounded promising. Elsie was still unsure,
but as they made plans she became more enthusiastic.
"Now all we have to
do is tell Lonny, wait where is Lonny?"

6:40 pm Love the
start of this thanks Brie
Corney swung round quickly almost hitting Maria
Marani in the face with her thick plait.
"Yes Maria?"
Maria was
in lower sixth this term along with Corney. Although out of class Corney was
still a strong member of the quintette in class she had found a kindred spirit
in Maria.
"It is just that my english homework, it is missing."
Corney had been left behind her friends academically, and so she had
become friends with Maria out of necessity, but the two had found they had much
in common. Maria was good friends with everybody but she had no especially close
friends, also Corney was several months older than Maria and she respected
Cornelias opinion.
Corney looked concerned. Maria was conscientious
enough normally.
"I would do it again but you know i still find English
the hardest!"
"Well gee, maria im not sure what you can do about that,
are you sure it really is missing?"
"Yes, i checked my desk and my
locker and i can't find it anywhere. Also I heard Cyrilla say that she couldn't
find her maths, don't you find that strange?"
Cornelia looked about her
shrewdly. Being a tiresome middle, had some benefits she realised. She could
smell mischief a mile away.
"I think I had better check the state of
that awful drawing Herr Laubach gave us."
Maria looked confused. "Do you
think someone has been stealing our prep?" Her eyes were wide.
"I think
you thought that too, Maria, but you didn't want to say anything in case you
were wrong" Cornelia eyed maria to see if she had guessed right.
Maria
flushed red, "I how do you say it, yes i wanted to sound things out first before
I made an accusation. "
"Ah ha! Look Maria, you saw me leave that
drawing in my locker after prep last night didn't you?"
"Well yes
Corney, of course i did. You were worried about bending it if you left it in
your desk. "
"Exactly, some imps are taking our prep, and i'll be darned
if i don't find out who it is!"
"But wait, Corney, how did you know it
would be your art that was missing?"
Corney looked grave, "Thats the
worst part of it you see, they are taking all the prep that we find hardest.
Your english, cyrillas maths, my art. All our pet bugbears."
"But
Corney, thats worse, thats sheer nastiness."
"I know, hopefully they are
just being thoughtless kids, but when i catch those.."
Maria grabbed her
arm, "Corney your a prefect now, you must watch your language."
Corney
glared at Maria, but Maria just laughed.
"Im only a sub..." she
muttered.
Marias eyes were twinkling, "It doesn't matter, your setting
an example"
Then she started laughing at Corneys mortified
face.

3:08 pm "Lonny
there you are. I've been looking for you everywhere, come and hear this, its an
absolute gem of a plan."
Lonny looked up perplexed from where she had
been standing talking to Hilary Burn. Elsie, finally realised that something was
wrong with the two of them.
"I say you two, whats wrong? Your faces are
tripping you."
Hilary, looked at Elsie with her piercing eyes, "Elsie
could you check your desk for your pens please?"
"What?" said Elsie,
clearly confused.
"Its like this" burst in Lonny suddenly, " Hilary
couldn't find her pen anywhere, so she asked if she could borrow mine, and then
i couldn't find mine and you know I always keep two in my desk" Here she wound
up sounding agitated.
Elsie crossed the class in two large bounds, and
was soon rummaging in her desk. "Well thats strange, mine is gone to!"
Hilarys lips were set in a straight line. "This is Betty and Elizabeths
attempt at a joke" she stated.
Lonny nodded, "It might not be them, but
its definetly a prank."
Hilary smiled slightly at this, "Well you two
should know. I might not have been here long, but i've heard rumours enough
about you lot."
Elsie and Ilonka immediately adopted super angelic
faces. They didn't fool Hilary for a moment.
"Come on you two. Stop
clowning around, and round up the rest of the prees, we had better sort this out
now."

they would be in a unique position to work out when a trick is being played!
(Can remember when a prefect in Lower Sixth, with a friend, being
responsible for ensuring First to Third Years always went outside during Lunch
Break - was asked by the new First Years why it was that we always knew where they were hiding! )

12:29 pm Corney
found herself launched on from behind. She fell into the wall, before
turning and glaring at her attacker.
"What do you think you are doing?"
Corney was standing fully on her prefects dignity. Margia laughed
tantalisingly.
"My Corney, you almost sound like a responsible adult!
Now we need to hurry, or you will be late for your first prees meeting. Well
come on, what are you waiting for?"
But Margia had stopped too, she
smiled again and the two waited complacently. they didn't have long to wait.
Three young middles charged along the corridor clearly running a race of some
sort.
Corney raised her eyebrows.
Alixe von Elsen let out a
defiant "Tally ho!"
But a quick hit on the arm from Biddy O'Ryan
silenced her. Mary shaw gave an angelic, hopeful smile to the two prefects.
Margia spoke first, "What do you kids think you are doing?"
the
guilty three remained silent. So Corney decided to shove her oar in,
"Whats that you were saying just now about the picnic next week Margia?"
The middles looked horrified, they had forgotten about next weeks treat.
"I'm sorry Margia, we were just having a race..."
Corney just
about managed to hide her smile, how she had hated the prees at that age.
"You can come and see Cornelia and I tomorrow morning and give us ten
reasons why you shouldn't run a race indoors."
The middles ran off, and
Margia was amused to hear in a markedly irish accent
"Well tis alright
for you Alixe, its german day tomorrow, but what about me?"
This was
followed by a groan from Mary. Margia grinned at Corney.
"Well we are
going to be rather late now..."
"A bit harsh don't you think margia"
said Corney suddenly.
"Oh they deserved it, we would have got just as
bad if not worse if we had done it..."
Cornelia nodded slowly, she
laughed suddenly,
"Did you see their faces when I mentioned the picnic?"
"And you call me harsh, you threatening them like that!"
"Well
hopefully it'll keep that lot in check till after the picnic, that'd be almost a
whole week without mischief."
Corney had forgotten the thefts in her
form.
"Shall we run, we are most awfully late?"
"Margia! After
giving Biddy and co such a row, you hypocrite!"
Margia laughed, but she
deigned to walk the rest of the way, firmly quenching her impatience and
curiosity.

12:27 pm hilary
heaved a deep sigh, why had gillian insisted on choosing this week to come down
with a head cold? She looked embarassedly at the group of girls looking
expectantly at her.
"What? Why do i have to conduct this meeting? Elsies
second pree..."
She was well aware that her excuse sounded pretty
pathetic. Elsie grimaced at her,
"That was low Hilary, you know fine
well that you are pegged for next headgirl, so you get to take the meeting."
Hilary although now backed into a corner was determined to fight till
the end. "but you are second pree, in the history of this school when has
the games pree ever taken a preects meeting?"
"Oh Hilary back down now,
you know elsies right.." Hilary turned to glare at the owner of the
bored-sounding voice.
Corney raised her eyebrows, this was not what she
had been expecting of her first prees meeting, she had been expecting to have to
act all serious, yet the rest of them were acting like KG babies.
"Ummm,
Hilary, Elsie am i missing something here?"
The two turned around to
stare at the newest addition to their prefecthood. Corney gulped as she
realised all eyes were on her.
"Its just that, well, isn't it supposed
to be an honour to be a prefect?"
Hilary had the grace to look slightly
ashamed,
"It is honourbright it is, its just its too much responsibility
for me i'm already dreading next term as it is, i don't want it to start any
sooner than it has too. You have too understand i am dreadfully honoured, it
just means a year of being an awful goody two shoes."
Hilary wound up
her tale of woe, not realising that almost every person in her position had felt
the same way at one point or another. Hilary realised that she was not going to
get a whole lot of sympathy from her friends, and decided she had better just
get on with this meeting.
"I call this meeting to order," if Hilarys
voice trembled a bit no one else noticed," We as a whole, are at the end of a
prank, and i don't like it. Its a direct prank on us prees and I think thats the
first time that this has happened."
She looked to some of the
longer-standing members of the school for confirmation. All but Margia and
Corney nodded their heads. Corney was realising that Hilary knew nothing of
lower sixths part in this, and Margia one of the pupils longest in the school
was remembering pranks played on the first set of prees in the very first term
of the school. She was not prepared to own up to these right now, and luckily
she did not have to, as Corney broke in and told her story of the missing prep.
The prees looked grave, they were not sure how to deal with a problem
like this. They were not, for the most part, a very experienced set of prefects
and this did not seem to them like the normal mischief one expected from
middles, this seemed more deceitful somehow.

1:12 pm Welcome
back, Brie.
I know that the girls were all supposed to be really keen on
"self-government" but I always thought that the prefects were given an awful lot
of responsibility and an awful lot of authority, considering that they were only
a few years older than the "Middles" who always seemed to be the troublemakers -
it's no wonder they're struggling to cope.

10:29 pm I've
just re-read 'Eustacia', and was horrified at the swingeing and inappropriate
punishment given to E. by the prefects for reading in the library when she
shouldn't have been. Not only were staff not consulted, the incident was
deliberately kept from them.
Agree with the prees that swiping people's
prep is a different sort of mischief.
Thanks, Brie, very
thought-provoking.

10:51 pm Their
was a silence around the room as everyone thought hard. Characteristically it
was evvy who finally broke the silence. "Well" she drawled,"Maybe we should
find out who it is before we decide what to do with the brats. It might be
easier to know how to punish them then."
There was sense in what she
said. You couldn't punish one of the babes the same way you would one of the
seniors.
"My guess is betty and elizabeth" was hilarys immediate
pronouncement.
"Why?"
"why? If theres any mischief to be had
they'll share in it, and i have always had my suspicions that betty at least is
not quite as straight as she appears"
Lonny turned on hilary suddenly,
"Hilary thats rather something to say don't you think?"
Corney had
once been a not so on-the-straight-and-narrow rebel herself and proceeded to say
so.
"Hilary, thats awful mean, thats surely a case of hanging a dog
without trying it, i wasn't always so nice and sensible myself, in my youth,"
Here she uttered an elderly sigh, and though she tried it was beyond
Margia not to splutter at this. Seeing Margia, Ilonka was moved to laugh also
and the argument of the moment before was forgotten as they all turned to see
Corneys highly indignant face. Elsie patted her friend lightly on the shoulder,
making sure that Corney couldn't see her upturned lips, before she became the
complete second prefect and called the meeting back to order.
"Hilary i
think the best plan would be to make a list of likely suspects and tail them
till we can find out who it really was."
Elsies idea of the prees
turning spies, went down well with the others. And by the end of meeting they
had decided that they would each have a form to watch with special attention
being paid to the third and fourth forms.
As they were busy gnashing on
their kaffee und kuchen talk turned to pleasanter things, and they were soon
arguing about the cricket eleven with vim. Suddenly Margias voice could be heard
above the others as she wailed plaintitively
"My music! Herr Anserls
going to kill me! I haven't practised a single note yet!"
and with this
she jumped up and left the room, leaving the others with a mad urge to giggle
wildly.

1:29 pm Corney
had completely forgotten her big plan for her dormitory that night until she
received a well aimed kick under the table from ilonka. At first Corney thought
Lonny was starting up an old game which had been abondoned in their youth due to
severe punishment. However when she looked up, ilonka winked at her. Corney
still looked confused, and rolling her eyes Lonny looked around for something
she could use to remind her friend without alerting their friends or juniors to
their plan. Corney, thinking Lonny had gone well and truly mad decided to
concentrate on the young middles sitting at their table. Their table contained
several young imps such as that saintly child alixe von elsen, and the
deceptively quiet Emmie Linders. Lonny finally gave up trying to get corneys
attention as a bad job and started to eat her abendessen. She was just mentally
calling Cornelia a dense idiot of a friend, when her attention was distracted.
It was not normally in her to eavesdrop, but for once she listened with all ears
to the quiet chatter going on at the table to her right. She frowned suddenly,
and corney looking up at this moment was moved to wonder if Ilonka really had
lost her marbles.

9:02 pm Ilonka
decided not to let worrying ruin her night of fun. That could wait until
tomorrow. Having made this important decision she proceeded to try and catch
corney alone. This proved to be easier said than done. Corney having ripped one
of her stockings badly, was trying to avoid matey and had hidden herself in one
of the music rooms. She knew if any of the mistresses saw she would have been
sent to Matey, and her extreme hatred of sewing would not allow her to do that.
Needless to say Ilonka did not think to look there for her. So it was
not until it was nearly time for bed that Ilonka managed to remind Corney of
their plan.
Cornelias face lit up as she remembered, and she proceeded
to race up the stairs to her bed, before any of the quintette went up.
Luck was not on her side tonight however. Matey saw her run up the
stairs and on catching sight of the offending stocking went racing after her.
So Corneys first night in her new dormitory was not spent in the way she
had been so hoping for. Instead of her laughing at them, it was them laughing at
her, as they had to stand waiting in the doorway for matron to stop haranguing
cornelia about her un-prefectly appearance.
Matey seemed to spend a lot of time lurking around the
dormitories and the corridors - she
always seemed to be "catching" people!

2:06 pm todays update comes courtesy of moi! just kidding its still
me- my brie log in is just non existent today! dammit have just realised i wont
be able to edit the title- grrr grr grr
It was lucky indeed that
it was saturday today, or many of the sixth formers may have had a sticky time
of it in class, trying to explain where their prep, and such like had gone too.
However they were lucky, and after fruhstuck the quintette discussed their
problem with much vim in their dormitory, as mattresses were turned and all
manner of morning work was gotten out of the way.
Ilonka, looked for
once hesitant. She was not willing to wrongly accuse anyone.
"whats
eating you lonny?"
Evvy looked concerned for her friend "Its not like
you to be quiet."
Lonny flung the pillow she had been plumping at Evvy.
Elsie glared at them.
"Do you two want to set matey on us?" Her tone was
full of sarcasm.
Corney. fresh from last night went bright red at this,
"Thats jolly mean of you to bring that up again Elsie Carr!"
"Oh
you goop, i wasn't even thinking about that. Its those two idiots im worried
about."
Here she proceeded to throw out her arm dramatically in Evvys
direction. It was really quite unfortunate that Margia chose to walk out of her
cubicle at this moment, catching the full force of elsies dramatic armwave in
her face.
'Elsie!" she cried.
"Are you all right, im awfully
sorry."
"Im fine", Margia said impatiently, "But look where you're
waving next time."
Elsie raised her eyes at Margias imperious tone, and
promptly threw herself down on the floor in front of her.
"Oh greatest
one, i am indeed truly sorry."
She prostrated herself on the floor in
front of Margia, and was just reaching to kiss Margias foot when
"Get up
you idiot!"
They were all laughing now and indeed Corney fell back on
her neatly made bed, she was laughing so much, and evvy who had been in the
process of folding her sheets managed to get tangled up in them and fell full
force into the cubey curtain seperating her and ilonka. The curtain tore of
course, and it was with a loud crash that she fell and landed on ilonkas bed.
By now the quintette were too far gone, Margia and Elsie were vainly
trying to hold each other up as they wept with laughter. Corney was hanging on
to her bed as she yelled with laughter, and Evvys muffled cries as she tried to
disentangle herself made them giggle even more.
But nemesis was to fall
on them.

3:52 pm "what on
earth are you lot up to? I knew the idea of you five reforming was to much to
believe!"
"Joey!" yelped Margia, wiping her streaming eyes.
"I'd
better warn you Matey is on her way through the dormitories at the moment..."
With this dire threat hanging in the air, the girls forgot about Joey
and tried to disentangle themselves.
Corney and Lonny came to their
senses and managed to untangle Evvy but the ripped curtain was beyond repair.
Evvy grimaced as she reconciled herself to having to spend her free time
in the near future sewing up the curtain.
"Joey? what are you doing
here?"
"Matey! I came down for a holiday, did no one tell you?"
If the quintette had been hopeful that Joeys prescence would distract
Matey from the state of their dormitory then they were doomed to be
disappointed.
After Matey and Joey had left the rest glumly got on with
their dormitory work.
"Margia, what are you grinning for? We all have a
half hours extra sewing tomorrow" Lonny looked at her friend surprised.
"Well i just have a gem of an idea thats all" said naughty Margia, who
had always refused to be quenched for long.
"oh no not this time! I dont
want to know. We are all in enough trouble as it is." proclaimed Evvy.
"Evvy!" whined Margia, "But its brilliant"
"But we are prees"
"Shes right Margia, we have to be responsible." Elsies tone was heavy.
A stubborn look came over Margia's face, and her friends realised she
was not going to be swayed that easily.

5:11 pm "I'm
sorry Hilda. You know i would never normally question your judgement but i have
to ask wht on earth you were thinking?!"
Hilda looked up startled.
"Gwynneth, what do you mean?"
"those five! they haven't grown up at all.
I thought it was strange when you made Elsie Carr second prefect, and then
cornelia a prefect. But none of them have grown up. and i dont think they want
to!"
Hilda Annersleys eyes softened, "When they are truly tested i think
you will find that they are mature enough, and responsible enough to cope. and
Gwynneth?"
"Hilda! you are not serious. Why
those girls were having a pillowfight in their dormitory this morning!"
"what?" replied Hilda surprised.
"all of them?"
"yes"
"I'll speak to them later Gwynneth. They are responsible deep down i'm
sure." she said gravely.
once Matey had left her study Hilda allowed her
face to relax into a smile. She didn't really blame them for not wanting to grow
up.

they're still young, and they've been so good with Biddy, it's not fair to say

"The Abbess!" gasped
Corney when she heard.
Margia would have comforted her, but she was
turning over in her mind, just how responsible she had been as a prefect since
this term began, and she was starting to believe that she had failed miserably.
Elsie, who it must be admitted, contained most of the common sense, and
conscientiousness of the group was looking panic-stricken. She thought briefly
too herself of the horror of being the first prefect tobe demoted.
Lonny
merely looked nervous, and Evvy with all her spare time to be spent mending the
cubicle curtain was already in a rather bad mood.
The dreaded interview
came at break, and it was after several nudges, and worried looks that Elsie
finally knocked on the door of the study.
"Come in" said Miss annersleys
gentle voice.
She smiled inwardly as she saw the girls apprehensive
looks. Each girl so different, yet clinging to their friendships throughout
everything.
"You are possibly wondering why i called you here?" she
asked icily.
It was Corney who answered, all in a rush, "No Miss
Annersley, and we are awfully sorry about this morning and everything. We just
didn't think."
Evvy chipped in, unwilling to leave it all to her friend,
"It was really my fault miss annersley, i wasn't looking where i was going" she
concluded lamely.
"So i see" she said her voice as sharp as steel.
"Do you think your behaviour was suitable in your current positions?"
Each girl was mentally wondering if she was about to be demoted.
"No Miss Annersley" replied Ilonka eventually.
"You girls have
the makings of fine women inside you" her voice was warmer now, "I see a great
deal of potential in each of you. You all have a great deal of inner strength,
and the backbone for that is your friendship and the fact that you know that
each other are there for you."
She felt that she was right in her
assessment of them as she saw the smiles they gave each other, and the
reassuring squeeze, evvy gave to corneys arm.
"You will each have trials
to face in your life, and you will be able to face them with conviction as you
know that you are not alone, you have your friends, and you have God. You are a
very lucky set of girls."
"Now" she said more briskly, "perhaps, you can
help each other by reminding each other to act in a manner befitting a prefect."
The girls blushed, remembering the reason they were there.
"Now
girls, you may go. Please think about what i have said."
the quintette
nodded at her solemnly.
"Evadne, please wait behind."
Evadne
looked panic stricken, as she searched her mind for any awful misdemeanours she
might have forgotten about.
The others walked out of the room sedately,
casting reassuring glances in their friends direction.
Once outside the
room they looked at each other agog with curiosity.
"you don't think
something is wrong do you?" asked Lonny worriedly.
"I hope not" said
Margia, her normally impish face turning serious at the thought.
"You
dont, you don't think she's getting all the blame do you?" asked Corney
tentatively.
"Of course not" said Elsie crushingly, though she had been
wondering the same thing, "The abbess is most awfully fair."
Just then
the door handle turned, and the four girls watched expectantly.
Evadne
came out, looking rather shocked and white in the face.
"Evvy?" asked
Margia. Her one word speaking volumes.
"I need to sit down" was all Evvy
said however.

7:48 pm "Well?"
asked Corney impatiently, if somewhat tactlessly.
"Nothing" replied Evvy
unconvincingly.
Margia glared at her. "Is everything ok?" she asked in
considerably kinder tones.
"Oh yes... well i suppose, just rather a
shock" said Evadne dazedly.
"It's alright if you dont want to talk about
it" said Elsie abruptly, knowing that corney and Margia could be too forceful
sometimes, "But we are all here if you want to talk."
Evvy nodded
gratefully.
There was an awkward silence as no one could think of
anything to say.
Then Ilonka let out a woop.
"Goop!" exclaimed
Elsie severely, for they were still outside the Head's study.
"I just
remembered" exclaimed Ilonka unrepentantly.
"Well before you lose your
wits completely lets say we move?" asked Elsie, the voice of reason.
"C'mon evvy" said Margia, slipping her arms through Evvys, unsure how
else to help her.
They were standing outside on the long lawn, before
Ilonka eventually told her friends what she had heard the previous night.
"the little horror" said Margia disgustedly.
"We weren't as
cheeky, in our wildest moments" conceded Corney.
"It's your sisters
fault, by the sound of things though" laughed Ilonka.
"and i'll wring
her neck when i see her!" exclaimed Margia.
Elsie laughed."it was hardly
likely to have only been her"
"and by the sounds of it the Robin had
something to do with it" said Corney hastily, for she saw a sticky time ahead
for poor amy.
"The Robin is up at the annexe" reminded Margia, " and you
all know Amy was the ringleader by the sounds of that"
"Well, you can't
say its not in the blood" said Elsie lightly.
"oh come on. We were the
limit, i'll admit. But this is cruel"
"Amy's a nice kid." said Lonny
reasonably, "If it was someone else i might agree with you, but with Amy its
just thoughtlessness i'm sure"
Margia looked unsure.
"I can't
face them. When they hear who it was..." said Margia slowly.
"They'll
understand that it was just a prank, and at least it will cut betty and
elizabeth a little bit of slack from Hilary." laughed Ilonka
Evvy looked
up suddenly, "Do you think she is too harsh on them?"
"Yes" said Lonny
stubbornly, "Its a case of, what do you say, hanging a dog before trying it?"
"more or less" grinned Elsie, " and i see what you mean Lonny. I still
think she'll make a splendid head girl though"
"oh yes. I'll back her up
a hundred percent" agreed Lonny
Evvy nodded slowly.
"Back to the
problem" wailed margia.
"It's not a problem" said Corney squashingly,
"The only problem will be finding a suitable punishment, and i'm definetly
thinking it ought to fit the crime" she grinned evilly.
Margia smiled
weakly.
"We have to tell the other prees first" reminded Elsie, "and
find out who else was in on it"

2:15 pm Amy
stevens looked up wth a start as she saw what her friend Lorenz was meaning.
Margia was sending her a look, that would have made her drop dead had she been
any closer.
"Lorenz" and she tugged her friends arm impatiently
"Yes" said lorenz shortly. Lorenz had not been sleeping well recently,
in fact none of them had. What had first seemed like a funny joke now seemed a
bit cruel. Especially after Lorenz had seen the trouble Cyrilla had gotten into
for 'forgetting' her homework the other day.
To make matters worse, Amy
had received a letter from the Robin, full of guilt, for it had been her plan,
for she had seen Gillian, who had come up for the afternoon, to visit her
mother, and as well as worrying about her mother, gillian had found out she had
to do some of her prep again.
"I think Margia might know" said Amy
fearfully.
" I dont know. But i think we should confess."
Amy
looked at Lorenz scared. But then she tilted her chin deteminedly, in a way that
made her for once resemble her sister.
"I think you're right."
"We wont tell them about Robin though" stated Lorenz
"No, of
course not" said Amy, "and Lorenz you didnt do as much, so i.. i should go
alone."
Lorenz looked at her scathingly. "I'm not a funk."
Almost finished!! Finally... one or two more posts thats
all.....

12:33 pm The
Prefects were sitting in their room, trying to think of an original punishment
for the young sinners. Needless to say all of their minds had gone blank.
They looked greatfully at the door, as a quiet knock penetrated the
silence in the room.
corney, who as the newest prefect, was sitting at
the foot of the table, leapt out of her seat, and opened the door.
she
looked down in surprise at Amy Stevens and Lorenz Maico.
"Come in" she
said shortly, surprise having taken away her manners momentarily.
Gillian stood up when she saw the two sinners, and Amy, already nervous,
tried to ignore Margias steady and angry gaze.
"Girls, what is it?"
asked Gillian in her soft voice.
"I... we.." stammered Lorenz
"We have been hiding the sixths prep" blurted out Amy.
"Why?"
asked Elsie.
"Ro.. we thought it would be funny."
"How?" asked
Hilary bluntly
There was silence, as the two girls stood there silently,
inwardly squirming.
"It wasn't" said Amy eventually.
Evvy looked
at the two girls carefully, and saw the dark smudges under their eyes, and Amy
in particular was pale.
She turned to gillian, and realised she had
noticed too.
"Girls" said Gillian quietly, "Did you realise that your
trick, however harmless it was meant to be, was cruel, and almost bullying by
picking out peoples particular weaknesses?"
The girls looked at each
other. Bullying was not something that was tolerated in this school.
Lorenz started crying, though Amy managed to hold back her tears.
"Thats why we came" she said through her tears.
"We realised we
were wrong, and we are sorry, and we didnt mean to hurt anyone."
And
with that Amy started to cry too.
Margia looked on, her stern gaze
softening as she realised taht they were just two silly girls.
"Well you
must apologise to all the other sixths too, you have both caused a lot of
discomfort to a lot of people."
The two girls looked horrified, various
memebers of the sixths had sharp tongues, and they doubted they would be spared
them.
"Now" said Gillian, "I think early bed tonight, and bed all day
tomorrow should help to remind you not to do this again."
Both girls
hated the idea of such a baby punishment, but they were both tired, and Gillian
knew that it was all they were fit for now.
"You may go now" said
Gillian sternly, "Go straight to Matron. Elsie will take you."
"Wait"
aid Ilonka suddenly, "Was there anyone else involved?"
Both girls went
red, but shook their head vehenemently.
"Ok, you may go."
Elsie
ushered them out.
Once the door was safely closed, Ilonka smiled widely.
"Dont look so upset Margia. She's a good kid. They both are. They came
and confessed off their own bat, and they didnt want their other friends to get
into trouble. She's got a good heart."
Margia, smiled slightly.
Corney looked troubled though.
"Shouldn't we have tried to find
who the others were?"
"No" said Evvy seriously, "Once they find out
their friends took the blame they'll come and confess too... at least if their
worth their salt they will."
Hilary looked up suddenly, something had
been preying on her mind for the last few days.
"I wasn't going to tell
any of you" she said slowly, "But i think i want to. "
The other
prefects looked up expectantly.
"I'm not coming back next term. Mum
wants me to come home and be with her for a while before i go for my PT
training."
The girls sat in shock. Hilary was a favourite amongst them,
and she had been a certainty for head girl next term.
"I say, we will
miss you hilary" said Corney eventualy.
* * *
That night as the
quintette lay in their dormy, trying to get to sleep after lights out, Corney
let out a sudden whoop.
"corney shut up!" hissed Elsie severely, "Dont
you remember what the abess said to us this morning."
"No, dont you!"
said corney excitedly, "or rather what she said to evvy!"
"Do you have
extendable ears or something?" said Margia drily. "We were all outside
remember?"
"No, you goop!" said Corney, still forgetting to lower her
tones particularly, "I've just realsied what it must have been!"
There
was a silence.
"Evvy, you are gong to be head girl once Gillian has left
aren't you?"
The others sat up eager to hear whether this was true.
finally came the reply.
"Yes!"
"Evvy!" exclaimed the
others.
"Shhhh! You goons!" she said scathingly.
"Well they are
going to have to accept that we are responsible now" said Lonny with some
satisfaction, "Imagine one of us head girl..."
"A reponsible quintette"
said Corney,
And the others all burrowed their heads into their pillows
and laughed at the absursdity of it all.
The End
