“Where can she be?” Joey ran her fingers through her hair, causing fairy sprinkles to float out, landing gently on all the adoring middles.
“I don't know, maybe we had better search,” suggested Mary, “It wouldn't do for our newest friend to get lost and miss such a delicious meal.”

The girls promptly did this, eager to discover where Eustacia had disappeared to and to wrap her in a warm fluffy duvet of hugs until all her woes vanished. They loved the queer child with a passion and so wanted her to feel at home amongst them. They were so keen to find her that the whole school turned out to look for her, searching high and low but to no avail.

There was many downcast hearts when they had to report back to the prefects that the poor unfortunate was still missing, but a mere glimpse of our heroine Joey soon put heart back into them.
“We'll find her yet,” was her cheerful cry, “So don't give up hope. Now think, are there any clues?”
“Well, there was a light in the library,” suggested Margia, “But I know you locked the door so she can't possibly be there.”
“Are you sure, because I put the key away in my desk after locking it.”
“Oh yes, I know, so it is strange, but there was a light.”
Joey leaned over and ruffled the girls hair, causing Margia to swoon in delight. “I'm sure there is a light if you say so, I'll go and have a look now.”

Sure enough, as Joey approached the library she saw a light shining and on trying the door found it unlocked. Eustacia was found safe and sound, to much rejoicing curled up in one of the armchairs reading. She looked up as Joey approached, smiling as she saw the tousle-headed prefect.
“Oh, is it teatime already. I'm so sorry I forgot, I became immersed in this super book.” Joey saw the contrition on her face and steeled herself to ask the awkward question,
“That's ok, but how did you get in here, I know I locked the door earlier.”
Eustacia turned horrified eyes on Joey. “Oh how dreadful you must feel, thinking I had been dishonourable. I know you locked the door, but when I wanted to read and couldn't find you, I spoke to Madamoiselle and she opened the door for me. She did however bid me remember the time and make sure I did not miss a meal and I must go and report my misdemeanour to her.”

“I don't think that is necessary, you haven't actually missed the meal. We saved you some bread twists and I think there is still coffee left, so you can come and eat with us with an easy conscience.”

Joey linked her arm through that of the younger girl and the two of them strolled back to the common room where the rest of the school greeted them rapturously. There were many hugs exchanged, before Eustacia was able to sit and have her meal and many eyes watering at the thought of the prodigal returned to the fold.

“Stop all this and let the poor child eat,” commanded Joey, her golden tones charming everyone and once more peace descended up on the Chalet School, smothering them all in a pink fluffy blanket of sickening, simpering, niceness.

I am not sure whether I prefer EBD view or this one about the situation. Love the thought of Eustacia asking Madamoiselle for entry to the library. But the

Hi Dick

Hope everything’s going OK with you and Mollie. Just to make you envious, we have lovely deep snow here, and the lake is frozen, so we can skate. I told you about Bernie’s wedding last time, but things have been happening since! We have a new girl this term. Well, more than one, but this one is unique! She thinks she’s the bees knees, and looks down on all us lesser mortals. Trouble is, she tells tales to the staff, and got poor Margia into trouble over it. And you can’t make her see how awful that sort of thing is. And she’s now had a real run-in with the Prefects, and me in particular.

As you know, we’re having a computerised library system put in, and at Kaffee on the first day – the Friday when everyone was back at school – I stood up and told everyone that the library would be closed till it was properly installed and all the books put onto the system. Quite reasonable you’d have thought. We’d got all the books ready over the last term, and the system pulls up records from somewhere else, so it doesn’t take long, or not for the number of books we have. We’re going the whole hog, and having something called biometrics too. This means that everyone’s fingerprints are stored as a code, so when anyone wants to take out a book they just scan their prints – or we do! – and then the bar code in the book. Anyway, there was a bit of grumbling, but nothing much and we got on with our meal.

So this week, again at Kaffee, we noticed that this new girl (Eustacia’s her name poor kind, but it doesn’t half suit her), wasn’t there. We sent out a search party, but they couldn’t find her anywhere. No one thought seriously of the library, ‘cos it was locked, and the key in my desk. It’s always locked when it’s not in use, and everyone knows that. Then Margia had a sneezing fit and had to go for a hanky. When she came back she said that there was a light on in the library! Well! We seniors decamped there pretty fast, I can tell you. We opened the door, and there was Eustacia, curled up in a chair, reading! She had a coat round her shoulders, as the stove was out and it was cold in there. She wasn’t pleased to see us, I can tell you! When we asked, she admitted that she’d gone to my desk and taken the key! And then we found out that she was reading a book from the staff shelves! These are strictly forbidden to any of us, but she seemed to think that just because she’d been allowed to read anything at home she could do that here. We hauled her up in front of us – all the Prefects I mean – and had it out. She refused to admit to any wrong-doing, would you believe, and was mightily surprised to learn that we could punish her. We’ve stopped her using the library till half term, since she chose to use it when it was shut.

Now part of the problem was her own sense of superiority, but part of it was because we hadn’t been able to do a proper introduction to the library for any of the new girls. But it’s made me think a bit about how we introduce new folk to the library. We’ve generally just told them about it, when it’s open, and what they can borrow, and stuff. But there’re rules and things that we usually just skate over, and having this bother now makes me think a bit. How about some sort of printed leaflet that they can take away with them? Also a laminated larger copy on the wall? Do you think that’d work? Of course, the new system will make it impossible for anyone to borrow things they oughtn’t, as staff stuff will be set up for staff only, and that sort of thing. What do you think?

Don’t take so long to reply to this as last time. I was wondering if you’d got lost or something! How long does it take to send an email?

Joey

I wish setting up a computerised library system had been that easy when I had to do it... :D Thanks, ADs, I love the modernised version of the story!

The tape machine whirred twice before starting to play, "This is the Secretary, Good Morning Eustacia. The Chalet School is a girl's boarding school set in the Austrian Alps, North-East of Innsbruck. The most popular pupil is one Josephine Bettany - sister of the original founder and owner of the School, Madge Russell. Bettany is now a Prefect, Library Prefect, and guards her privileges jealousy. The School prides itself on it community spirit, pupils are rarely, if ever, allowed to spend time alone, those that even try being looked upon as 'non-conformist' and in need of change. Bettany herself is gregarious and cannot understand those that wish for solitude. She restricts access to the Library by means of a solitary key generally kept in her desk - it is considered a matter of honour that no girl would ever look through another's belongings and their desks are sacrosanct.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to retrieve that key and spend time inside the Library alone. I must caution you that, on discovery, your punishment is expected to severe and wholly out of proportion to the crime and you may find yourself ostracised - especially if you are perceived as an enemy by Joesphine Bettany.

Good luck Eustacia

This tape will self -destruct in five seconds.'

Yes, I was beginnig to wonder . . . but EBD didn't kill that many people off, so they're a bit restricted - and we have had the Cosimo episode, so the ADs are homing in on the bloodthirsty bits where they can

Thank you for these - they are great.

A minor request - would it be posible to put the books name, or an abbreviation thereof in the title? Most of my books are packed in boxes at the moment, and I just don't remember the order by heart. Just seing 'Day5', 'Day 6' can be a bit confusing, and it takes away from the drabble when I have to spend the first few seconds trying to figure out which book.
