Front Page of The Mailmirror Daily:

Schoolgirl Hooligan:
Kills child in rage.
The wave of hooliganism rampaging throughout our youth has come to a head in the most horrific way. Yesterday morning during what can only be described as a fight, many girls from the prestigious Chalet School were seen by our reporter throwing snow and scuffling with each other while staff looked on, unable to separate the combatants as the battle raged.

One young hooligan, an Irish girl was spotted taking a large and sharp stone and flinging it directly at the head of another child hitting her on the temple. The child crashed to the floor and we have since heard that she died of her injuries. Our sources have informed us that there was an established feud between the two and the Irish ruffian had vowed vengeance against the English child. Vengeance that it seems she claimed yesterday with tragic consequences.

What, we ask is becoming of our youth? The young people whose fathers fought so gallantly for their country are now showing no decency or respect for the truths and freedoms won at such great a price. Something must be done. (See page 7 for Editors comments)

Well, it's nice to know that newspapers haven't changed in the last 80 or so years... :D :D :D

Wondering how accurate the reports were. Newspapers can be unreliable today and i expect they could have been then!!!

The Tribunal

Bring Stone to the witness stand, please”, said the Chair of the Tribunal.

A small, rough stone was carefully placed at the front of the stand, where all could see it clearly. It was trembling slightly, producing a low continuous rattle, this being the only independent motion of which it was capable.

“You were the prime cause of the injury to the human, Stone. What do you have to say for yourself?”

“Please, it wasn’t my fault, Your Honour”, said Stone in a squeaky voice. “I was chucked.”

“Tell me the details, if you please. We will come to our own conclusions over the matter of fault.”

“Well, I was lying on the ground, minding my own business like I always do. It’d been snowing hard for a few days, and I was covered in a nice warm blanket that kept the wind off me. I could still hear things though. You know how clear sound is after snow. I knew it had stopped as the light got brighter. Then I heard voices - those girls that live at the big chalet. I’ve heard them before and recognised the voices. They were laughing and talking, and they stopped close to where I was lying. They were discussing having a snowball fight, and picking sides. From what I heard, one side made a fort to defend, and the other was going to attack it. It sounded like fun. They made heaps of snowballs and stacked them up, but when they started to run out they were making new ones as they went. That’s when it happened, see. This girl grabbed a handful of snow, and she picked me up too. She knew she’d done it, because she scratched her hand a bit, not enough to make her bleed or anything, just so she knew she’d picked up more than just snow. It didn’t stop her making a ball though, with me inside it. There was nothing I could do, was there? I can’t move by myself, so I couldn’t get out of her hand. Just had to go along with whatever happened. I couldn’t see much, buried in the snowball, but before I knew it I was flying through the air! I just hoped that the ball would miss, but no such luck! Those girls are used to chucking balls about in the summer and they’re pretty accurate. The snowball hit one of the girls on the head I think, and I fell to the ground. The girl cried out and collapsed beside me. There was a lot of fuss and bother, and then they all went back inside, carrying the girl who was hit. She was very still, unconscious I think. That’s all I can tell you.”

“Quite enough too, Stone. Thank you. Call Pine Tree to the stand.”

“Pine Tree has recorded his evidence, Your Honour, as he is unable to leave his place of residence,” replied the Usher. He moved towards a projector, set up in the middle of the room, and switched it on. Someone lowered the lights, and a flickering black and white image appeared on a screen in the corner. It showed a clearing in the trees, with low bushes and trampled snow scattered about. The camera zoomed in on one of the trees, and a face could be made out in the bark.

“My name is Pine Tree, and I was a witness to all that transpired on the fateful day,” he said with sonorous dignity. “It had been snowing hard for days, and when the sun came out so did those girls at the chalet. Can’t blame them really, it was a beautiful day, crisp and cold. Anyway, I watched them as they picked sides for a snowball fight. They’d had these before when the snow was fresh so I wasn’t too surprised that is was happening again. One side built up a fort just in front of where I stand, using the bushes to help make the walls stronger. The other group started making snowballs. They were making a lot of noise and really enjoying themselves. When they ran out of ammunition they made more as they went, gathering snow and making a ball, and throwing it straight away. Well, one girl did this, and I could see she’s got Stone there as well. She did too, I’m sure. It didn’t stop her throwing it though, straight at another girl. It hit her pretty hard and she fell to the ground. Then the first girl looked horrified, realised what she’s done of course. Wasn’t anyone’s fault but that girl’s if you ask me.”

The film flickered to a stop, and there was silence.

Then the Chair spoke again. “That seems very straight forward. This tribunal exonerates Stone from all blame, given the evidence of Pine Tree and Stone’s inability to move under his own power. Stone, you are free to go. This Tribunal stands adjourned.”

As I threw that stone I felt complete exultion, here was my vengeance, here was 'pay back' for the way that girl had dared to treat me. Speak to me as though I were lower than her boot scrapings? I would never accept that, never allow her to get the better of me. Burning her harmony book was just the start - I knew her Grandmother's letter was in there, I laughed as it went up in flames - that would teach her! But still she continued to try and 'lord' it over me - well I'd fix her. I knew I had picked up a stone, yes it had been turned over in the scrummage but I could see it, recognised it - a flint, nice and sharp along one edge, and just the right size. I was always good at fielding in cricket and my expertise came to the fore then - I deliberately threw it at her head, deliberately aimed for her temple - I wanted to destroy her.

Then, as quickly as it appeared, my rage died and I realised what I had done - I'd nearly killed her - I went white - oh not through horror - though it appeared to be that - I wasn't horrified, far from it - I was just suddenly aware that I would be caught - that, in the melee someone would have been sure to have seen me throw the stone, would remember the quarrel between me and her - would know to place the blame squarely on my shoulders. I nearly fainted I was so worried, and must have looked terrible as Miss Maynard looked at me strangely as she gave us all an update on her condition. I had a sudden thought and knew how to deflect the trouble and hurried after her to grab her arm, summoning all my acting talent I gave the impression I was overcome, that I was distraught, that I considered myself a murderess.

It was wonderful - I have never acted so well - I made out it was a fit of temper, that I was truly repentant, that I was grief-stricken - while all the time I was quietly laughing to myself - they all fell for it, Joey, the Mistresses, the Head, even the girl herself - oh I have never acted so well as that day - I even had the School Baby trying to comfort me, crying in sympathy when I was trying hard not to laugh out loud. I was forgiven, fully and completely, by everyone, even the girl herself - she even shook hands, told me the quarrel was at an end - as if. I won't forget, I still remember how you treated me - if it takes twenty years I'll repay you - hurt you in a way that will be with you for the rest of your life.

Very plausible too! And I liked the stone's pov - poor thing, caught between a rock and a hard place like that.
