For the Advent Drabbles this year we are doing something different. This time for each of the twenty four days leading up to Christmas we are concentrating on one book, starting with School at for the first all the way through until Island for Christmas Eve. In each book we have decided to write three accounts of one particular scene or occurrence...sounds boring, we hear you cry - well perhaps it would be - except the scenes will all be written from very different perspectives, viewpoints etc etc and we make no apologies for some of them being...odd.

We won't tell you the actual scene - that's for you to work out - we may (or may not) tell you exactly what type of viewpoint it is being written from. We will try to post one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening - but make no promises except one - barring Internet/board failures all three of the day will be posted by midnight GMT.

Excerpt from ...The Edwardian Businessman's guide to etiquette

How to propose marriage to a young lady.

When undertaking such a delicate endeavour it is important to remember that the fair flower you are approaching, will, if she is a lady have no realisation of what is about to be said and may take time to grasp your meaning and to give her answer. However if you follow our guidelines then you should receive a favourable reception.

Firstly it is advisable to make your proposal in writing. This gives any young lady the chance to consult with her elders before feeling obliged to make a response. It also means that you can take your time to ensure the correct words and forms of address are used.

When taking pen in hand to inscribe your epistle be certain to start by assuring the young lady of your respect for her honour. No lady likes to feel she is deemed an easy catch by an unscrupulous gentleman looking to better himself.

After this start you should mention that the subject is a delicate one, thus preparing your reader for what is to come. You should also mention that you would not normally have the temerity to broach such a subject but that your feelings for her are not easily forgotten.

This is the point where you should broach the most delicate part of the letter, the actual proposal. It is best to be simple and clear so that the young lady is in no doubt that your proposition is honourable wedlock.

Finally do not pressure a lady into accepting or answering your proposal. If she gives you a negative answer accept her refusal as final.

The Marj Letters

Gracious Madame,

I come before you with far and trembling to ask for your help. Some few months ago I was travelling to Lyons on business (I am in cloth manufacturing), when I fell in with three young ladies on the train from Paris. Two were children, but the other was a lady, and they were on their way to start a school in the Austrian Tyrol. I speak truly when I tell you that she was graciousness itself to me. I am a self-made man, with little formal schooling, and, I fear, a stronger accent than I would quite like, and she was socially far above myself. However, she was so kind and friendly, when many others would have snubbed a man like myself, that she has never left mind from that day to this. I am single, indeed I have never had time to seek a wife, being too busy building up my business, but now I feel the lack of the companionship of the gentler sex. What I would ask of you, dear madam, is whether I should chance my luck with the lady.

Yours sincerely

James Kettlewell

Dear Mr Kettlewell

Faint heart never won fair lady, and you will never succeed if you do not ask. Write to her and pop the question.

Your sincerely

Marj P

Dear Marj

I find myself in a bit of a quandary, and would value some advice. I am the Headmistress and Proprietor of an English school set in the Austrian Tyrol. We have only been open for a few months, but already we are growing. On the journey here with my sister and my first pupil we shared a compartment on the train with a gentleman from Bradford travelling to Lyon on business. He was a bit rough-cut, being clearly a self-made man, but a pleasant travelling companion. We shared our food and chatted about many different subjects, as one does in such situations. He left us at Dijon, and I confess that I never gave him another thought, being too occupied with setting up my new school, and trying to control my nervousness that the venture should fail. Today, out of the blue, I have received a letter from the gentleman. A proposal of marriage to be frank, and I am not sure what the best course of action should be. I opened the Chalet School as a means of keeping myself and my sister, as we were left in financial difficulties at the death of our Guardian. My brother is in the Forestry in India, and his salary is insufficient to support us all, even if my sister’s health permitted us to live in that climate. After one term the school looks as though it will be a susses, but who can tell? If I accept the offer of marriage, both my sister and myself will be secure. But is liking enough? Should I marry him or not?

Yours sincerely

Margaret Bettany

Dear Margaret

What is your heart telling you? Love is so very important to a marriage, and if you do not love this man, then you are asking for trouble. It seems to me that for you at this moment your school is the most important thing in your life outside your family. Could you give all this up to share your life with a man? If you cannot, then marriage is not for you, or at least not marriage to this particular gentleman. You will know when the right man comes along, for you will be prepared to give up everything for him.

Yours sincerely

Marj P.

Gracious Madame,

Forgive this further missive, but I felt that you should know the effect of your advice. It was totally and utterly useless, Madame. My suit has been refused, though with tact and sensitivity. I am not one to suffer such advice and let the advisor escape with impunity. To this end, I have impregnated this letter with a fatal dose of pure nicotine. Lest this missive should fall into other hands than yours, and thus incriminate me, it will self destruct in two minutes.

Yours sincerely

James Kettlewell

TOP SECRET TOP SECRET TOP SECRET TOP SECRET

These files were sealed originally by order of HM King George V in 1927, they were resealed by HM King Edward VIII in 1938 with orders that they not be opened for another seventy years...

Father,

You ask why I 'dally' with married women, why I cannot seem to find a woman with whom to settle down? Well I have found her, but, unfortunately, she does not want me. Do you remember the time I disappeared for a few months back in 1926/1927? I spent some time travelling in Europe, incognito, with only my bodyguard. On more than one occasion I even managed to give him the slip - why? Because i was interested in meeting real people, I tired of the unending round of functions, meeting people who had been closely vetted, who wanted to meet me solely because I was the Prince of Wales. I yearned to meet normal people, participate in normal conversations. Well I did that and far more - I was travelling on a train from Boulogne to Lyon and, to ensure that people not recognise me, I had disguised myself. I'll admit, I probably went rather 'other the top' with the disguise, wearing padding to appear fat, purchasing a truly ghastly check suit and speaking in so broad an accent I wonder anyone could understand me - you remember our groom from Yorkshire? His accent.

Anyway, I intended only to speak with some people, find out their hopes and dreams, discover something of their lives - I never expected to fall in love. She was travelling with two children, even though she herself was barely more than a child. Dark brown curls and soft brown eyes, an intelligent, determined face. She had a dream of starting a school somewhere in the Austrian alps - and I think she will have made a success of it. The two children were interesting too - one, her sister, a pale, black haired waif with far more energy within her than her body could cope with, while the other was a little beauty, brown curls and grey eyes, though she seemed far quieter, almost afraid. But most of my attention was on the older girl - her name was Margaret and every time she spoke my heart would sing. I felt complete with her and, when they had to leave the train at Paris I nearly forced them to stay. I did manage to get the address of where they were heading but nothing more.

You'll wonder why I didn't say something? Why I didn't tell them who I really was and insist that she remain? But I couldn't do that - I needed to know that she loved me for me, not because I happened to be the Crown Prince of England. I thought she was just an infatuation, I tried to forget her - but in the end I had to know. I wrote to her, father, as the Yorkshireman, proposed marriage - she turned me down flat.

Would she have accepted had she known? I don't know, I hope not - I hope she is the honourable sort that accepts a person for themselves, not their outward trapping. I doubt I will ever find her like again.

Yours
David, Prince of Wales.
