Vikki heaved a huge sigh of relief as she snuggled down beneath her plumeau, five weeks she had been here now, nearly six. Soon they would be looking at end of term and she could finally return home. It was not that she disliked it here, far from it. In some ways it was a dream come true - I mean, who would not want to attend the famous Chalet School, rub shoulders with the mighty Mary Lou, sit next to Len Maynard in class. And as for the lessons - Vikki smiled when she realised just how pleased her parents would be, she had managed to improve her languages so much - and all it had taken was exposure to a deadly disease. Funny really, she had tried to tell everyone that smallpox just wasn’t a problem any longer. That, actually, the World Health Organisation had declared it to be eradicated from the face of the Earth - well, apart from the small amount that every government in the world was holding in a secret laboratory - ‘just in case’. Somehow though, it just didn’t get through. Oh Doctor Maynard or one of his deputies would listen carefully, agree that she had a perfectly viable scar indicating immunity, then promptly turn round and say that she had to stay in quarantine anyway. It was as though they were all working to a script that could not be broken. Vikki snuggled further under her plumeau, wishing she could get warm again. She thought back over the last few weeks. Having someone speak to you only in French or German for a day really did make you learn things so much faster. And the other girls and Mistresses were very good at ensuring she was able to repeat and understand all the phrases - of course that could be because they were all feeling guilty - after all, it would have been useful if someone had told her the German for Duck!! before playing hockey - still, the three hours of unconsciousness and resultant black eye did mean she was looked upon as a heroine - even though she did have to cope with Mrs Maynard singing ‘the Red Sarafan’ at the drop of a hat - who on Earth told that woman she could sing? The food was good - surprisingly so considering that Vikki was normally such a picky eater. She shivered involuntarily, this time in fear, not due to the cold - never again would she try and explain to Matey that she did not like a certain food - that woman should be done for child abuse - what she made her do. What was even more annoying was that her methods had worked - Vikki now ate everything on her plate solely so that she would not have to face Matey and her bottle of Castor Oil again! Vikki sighed, suddenly starting to feel a little warmer - these midnight dashes outside were the only problem with being at the School. The difficulty was that there were no facilities, Vikki frowned, she had not intended to think that, there were no splasheries, no washrooms, no bathrooms…Vikki concentrated hard, no t..o..i..l..e..t..s, there, she’d said it, well, sort of. She had searched, thinking that they had just not been mentioned in the books, searched with somewhat increasing desperateness as that first day drew to a close. Eventually her desperation had been noticed by the Headmistress and Vikki had, with a great deal of embarrassment, asked where they were. The reply shocked her - they did not exist, Chalet Girls and Staff did not require something so crass and common. Well maybe the rest of them didn’t require them, but Vikki did! In desperation that night Vikki had snuck out of her dormitory and out into the cold, cold night. After completing her business she had run back inside and, every night since, had managed the same. Vikki smiled sleepily as she finally warmed up enough to fall asleep, at least she had managed to sort something out. The following morning, however, there was a shock for Vikki, at Fruhstuck that morning Miss Annersley had risen to request that Vikki Kirkum come to the Head’s Study directly after the meal had finished. Vikki went along not understanding and found herself in being asked to take a seat, “We’re waiting for Matron, Vikki,” Miss Annersley said softly and Vikki relaxed, knowing she was not in trouble if the Head was using the shortened form of her name. A little later Matey appeared and nodded toward the Head who then looked across at Vikki, “Now you are not in trouble, Vikki,” she began, “but Matron tells me that you have been going outside at night to perform some, personal, business?” “Yes Miss Annersley, I’m sorry but…” “That’s quite alright, child,” Miss Annersley replied, “I’m afraid I’m at fault here, I should have explained it to you on your first night.” “Explained?” “Yes, you see we cannot allow any form of waste to pollute this part of the Swiss Alps, therefore it is being sent home to your parents,” as she spoke Matron disappeared outside to return with a huge packing case full of .....!!!!
