“Come and sit here, Nancy,” said Miss Annersley. “I know you must be very shocked but I need to know just what happened, and you and Mollie are the only Prefects who were near enough to see anything at all. As you know, Mollie is in no fit state to tell me anything.”

Nancy sank into the easy chair in the Head’s study and shuddered. She was looking very white, and really fit only for bed, whence Mollie had already been taken, having fainted at the scene.

“The girls had been very cross and crotchety,” she began. “Probably tired after the late night last night. I was in none to sweet a mood myself, to be honest. I’d had to go across and separate Primrose Day and Elfie Woodward when they were fighting over a magazine. I sent Elfie to Matey - I mean Matron - and directed Primrose to sit at the far side of the lawn. She hated me at the time, but I suspect she’s a little more grateful now. Bride was snarling at anyone who spoke to her, and even the Ozanne twins quarrelled, and ended up sitting as far apart as they could. Then Tom Gay got up for something, and caught her foot in Rosalie’s knitting. In trying to stay upright, she managed to break a needle. I must say that her contortions were very funny at the time.” A wan smile lightened Nancy’s face for a moment. “Of course, Rosalie told Tom off, and it looked as though Tome brushed it aside. I couldn’t hear what the were saying very well. Then Rosalie realised that the broken needle was the one with the stitches on it, and she really let rip - err lost her temper. We could hear her voice then all right! She called Tom a pig, and accused her of flying about like a mad eagle.”

“A mad eagle? Are you sure, Nancy?” Despite the gravity of the situation, Miss Annersley’s eyes were twinkling.

“Oh yes! That came over very clearly, and it made the others giggle. Then Rosalie grabbed her book and her knitting and tried to bound out of her chair. The trouble was she was sitting in a deck chair, and you can’t leap up out of those. She caught her foot on something, and fell backwards, landing on the frame. Of course, the deck chair collapsed under her, and the bump finished her off. When she scrambled to her feet she was red with rage. She shouted at Tom at the top of her voice - I would think they could hear her in the village! - called her a pig again, and yelled that she wished she’d never come to this loathsome school! Mollie and I looked at each other, and began to get up to try and smooth things over, as they looked as if they were getting out of hand. One or two of the others put their spokes in too, which just added fuel to the fire!”

Nancy stopped suddenly, looking even whiter if that was possible, and Miss Annersley rose from her seat and came to put her arm around her.

“Never mind Nancy. Tell me later if you can’t go on.”

“No Miss Annersley. I want to finish; get it over and done with. Rosalie gave a funny sort of sob and turned to run away, or so we thought. But that’s when it happened. There was a sudden bright flare somewhere around her tummy, and then.... then.” Nancy choked back the sobs which were threatening to overcome her. “All of a sudden, there was just a pillar of fire where Rosalie had been. The book and knitting dropped to the ground, and I saw later that they were only slightly singed. But Rosalie....” The helpless sobs would not be denied, and Nancy collapsed into Miss Annersley’s arms, shaking with the force of her tears.

'Oh I hate them, I hate them, I hate them. Why did Mummy and Daddy ever send to to this hateful terrible place. Tom did that deliberately and now she's wrecked my knitting, I'll never be able to pick up those stitiches and she didn't even care! And all the others just laughed at me, horrid little hyenas. I hate them, I hate them!'

'I'll run away, that's what I'll do, run away and go home. I'm sure Mummy never expected my school to be like this. I thought it would be full of girls like me. Girls who liked the quiet life, a good story book, some knitting or embroidery and gentle conversation. The girls here are all such hooligans, just like horrid little boys. And Tom Gay? Who does she think she is? What sort of name is Tom anyway - it's not her Christian name, it's just a nickname. Her initials are L.M. yet she wouldn't tell me what the initials stand for. Anyway I don't care about her - she thinks I'm a weak, silly little girl - well so is she!'

'I can't run away, I don't have any money. And anyway it will worry Mummy, the school might contact her and she'll worry so terribly. But I can't go back - they'll all laugh at me, they'll all call me names, call me cry-baby. I wish I could give them a real shock - so they would feel sorry for the way they treated me, so they'd realise just how they upset me. I wish I could find somewhere to hide, just for a while, just until they start to feel sorry. Perhaps I could hide under that hedge?'

'I think this must be a real secret passageway, you know. There's a proper little pathway and a small cave made by the yew. I'm sure I can see another pathway under that hornbeam hedge, heading toward the river. Perhaps I'll just follow...oh..oh..my hair, it's caught by the yew...oh...ouch...I can't get free, I can't get free!'

"Help!!!! Help!!!!"

Easily, we just stop.

Lesley and I are both writing just in time, and no, I have no intention of writing on Christmas day. I have a stinking cold and want tons of sympathy. :coffee: :coffee:

As for next advent, when have we ever repeated ourselves? :P

Ooops, forgot I had logged in ready,
Carolyn.

If we offer sympathy and a week off... could you post, um, say one or two a week in the new year? Just slacken the pace a bit.

Because this is such good fun, I'm going to miss them. Plus I'd love to see what you could do with some of the other books
