Joe Pengelly switched the card in the window to read Closed, and lowered the blind, before walking upstairs to the living quarters with a weary sigh. His wife Stella dumped two pasties onto plates and brought them to the table.

"Busy morning?" she asked.

"About average, but that Miles Barrass came in part way through. You remember his wife bought the last of the sausages yesterday? I thought they were starting to go over, but let her have them anyway as she said they were for that day. Well I shouldn't have!"

"They were off?"

"That's right. We're going to have to have electricity laid in here soon, or no one will risk buying anything. It's not as though the village is cut off any more."

"It costs though, doesn't it? Can we afford it? You always reckoned we couldn't."

"I've changed my mind after this morning. Barrass went off the deep end in front of a whole lot of customers, and he's got a foul tongue on him when he does that. He went on about out-of-the-way places that couldn't or wouldn't use modern technology, and reporting us for food poisoning, and I don't know what else! I caught more than one smirk, and that's when I decided that expense or no expense, we need a fridge! There was one bright spot though!" he grinned reminiscently.

"Well go on, tell me," said Stella, when the silence had carried on for a while. Joe took a mouthful of pasty, chewed and swallowed before replying.

"He'd just nicely got going when that Mrs Trelawney came in. The old battleaxe, not the younger one. She stopped dead in the doorway when she saw Barrass with a look of distaste on her face that deepened as what he was saying registered. She's really above herself, that woman. Thinks that her family are better than the village folk, which means that that poor little kid has no one to play with."

"I know. I've often felt sorry for her, but what can you do against that sort?"

"I couldn't help watching her as Barrass ranted, because I knew his language would shock her rigid - and it did! Her face went red, then white, and her eyes flashed. Then she turned and stalked out of the shop. Barrass ran down about five minutes later, and left, vowing he'd never buy from us again! Well he might not, but his wife will! She won't want to go hiking into Melion for her meat, will she?"

"Did Mrs Trelawney come back later?"

"Oh yes. Very much on her dignity as usual. And no way was she going to admit that she'd been driven off by all the swearing."

"Wonder if that won't rebound against Mary-Lou. She's got very friendly with the Barrass kids, and they live next door to each other, don't they? Will the old lady try to put a spoke in there, do you think?"

"Wouldn't surprise me, though it'll be a shame if she does. That girl needs friends of her own age; she's too old for her age thanks to being around the battleaxe and her soft mother. She needs to have a proper childhood, getting dirty, running around shouting, like other kids. If she doesn't, she'll find it hard to make friends when she needs them."

"Well we can't change things, talk as we might. Do you want a cuppa before you go back to the shop?"

Joe passed his cup across, and the talk moved on to other things.

Thank you!

I was hoping his would be one of the other points of view :D

Makes you wonder how other CS types who sniffed at village schools and similar came across, too.

Adrian Charles Barrass - or was it Miles? He could never remember - anyway he strode angrily along the path to the village square. This time he was going to let that Pengally have it. He'd been looking forward to those sausages all day yet when his wife - couldn't remember if she'd ever been given a name, oh well, she wouldn't care anyway, if she's not busy painting she running her hands through her hair making it look as though she hadn't combed it for a week - have to keep up these artist stereotypes you know? Adrian or maybe Miles came to a stop, somewhat distracted, now what was he doing? Oh yes, going to shout at Pengally the butcher - daring to sell his wife sub-standard sausages - he's have environmental health on to him - least he would if they actually existed in nineteen forty-six, or was it when the book was published, nineteen forty-nine? He shook himself - Pengally, remember, right!

He stormed into the butcher's scattering village women and children as he went - after all, they were only there for local colour, it wasn't as if they were actually human or anything was it? "Pengally, I want a word with you"

The butcher scurried out, all cringing servility, "Yes Mr Barras, how can I help you?"

"You can start by learning the King's - oh wait a minute," he reached out and grabbed hold of a passing peasant, "we do still have a King don't we? He's not gone and died without us noticing has he? She has this knack of missing things like that."

"Oh no Sir," the peasant replied, tugging his forelock and curtseying at the same time, "we'm still has Good King George, I think he's got a few more years before the fags kill him."

"Right, right," Barrass turned back to the butcher, "yes, you can start by learning the King's English, can't you? Everyone knows you should have said 'how may I help you?"

"Oh I'm right sorry Mr Barrass sir, but i only went to a poor village school, I doesn't know no better, even though I'm got an IQ of two hundred and fifty which they thinks is due to the fact that my great uncle once removed once stood in the same line as a Lord. 'Cos of course it couldn't possibly be that I'm just intelligent, me being one of the lower classes you know."

"Well never mind that," Barras said impatiently, "what about my sausages?"

"Your sausages, Mr Barrass?"

"Yes, my bl**dy sausages. The ones you sold us, you half-witted w****r, the sausages that were so bad they f****ing well leapt out of the pan on their own and tried to so*****g well attack the wife....whatever her name is... those sausages? Well if you think we're buying another piece of sh** in this ar** end of a shop, you bas***, you've got another think coming." He stormed out leaving the rest of the people staring.

LOL!!
I've been rather behind this year so haven't been commenting on the individual drabbles, but they're all fantastic. (It's just a shame that Lesley has so many keys on her keyboard that malfunction like that     )
