Why do I get roped into these things year after year?

Actually, I know only too well why. I married Joey. What on earth possessed me?

I wonder if anyone would notice if she 'accidentally' fell in and drowned.

All these boring swimming races. Who on earth would willingly give up precious free time to watch a bunch of lacklustre girls swimming in a sheltered cove. I thought all those nativity plays and sales were bad, but this is sheer hell. They can't even swim well. No wonder, they have only had a term with any regular swimming.

Over 14 open event, well duh, how silly, no 14 year old is going to beat the sixth form are they?

Oh, they did. Drat, that's a tenner I'll never see again.

Lunch. Why do we all have to eat at the school. I'm not a child, I'd like slightly better food than school fare. What happened to game pie, champagne, maybe even a little caviar. Carey and I grab a snifter to fortify ourselves for what's coming next, but if we take more than 20 mins they will send out search parties. Can only manage a couple of glasses in that time.

Got her. Put a spoke in the Mary-Lou's wheels. Told Hilda that she was far too young to be competing with the older girls, bad for her health etc etc. Maybe Next Year it will be 16+ and my money safe.

Oh flaming heck. Boat races now. Kill me now, please. You would be doing me a favour. I see there is a 'Tub Race' to finish with. One of their supposedly comic events. Joey will talk about it for the next three months, three years if anything even remotely funny does happen.

Will this day ever end?

There you are, the beginning of the final set for this year. Hope you have enjoyed them as much as ever, Have a very Happy Christmas.

Post subject:  Re: Advent Drabbles Day 24: Island

We were scrambled at 16.30 hours to St Briavels, an island off the coast of Wales, only a few minutes flying time from RAF Valley. The target was a school regatta that had been hit by some sort of water spout, and there were reports of missing boats full of people. The weather was fine and calm, with blue skies and little wind, and we discovered later that the waterspout had come into the cove with no warning, swinging round the small bay and heading out to sea again, having wreaked havoc. When we got there we found five rowing boats pulled up neatly on the shoreline, these having been beached earlier. A long line of children were climbing the cliff path, going back to the school, leaving tents, blankets, and picnic things behind. The inshore lifeboat was just entering the bay from the base at Carnbach. There was also a scattering of what looked like old-fashioned wash tubs on the beach, which raised a question mark in our minds as to how they got there! We found out later that some of the girls had been racing in them when the accident happened, but they'd been pushed to shore rather than swept out to sea. Apart from bumps and bruises they had suffered no harm.

The Cox of the lifeboat radioed in after talking to a woman on the beach, who turned out to be one of the mistresses. There were three boats missing - two smallish motorboats one used for marking the finishing line, and the other acting as a guard boat, plus a steam yacht which had acted as a Grandstand for families. The two smaller boats had been moored to buoys, and the yacht had been anchored a little further out when the water spout hit, scattering the tubs onto the beach, but endangering none of the girls in them. The buoys had pulled their anchors, and dragged the boats out of the cove, and the steam yacht had been hit head on by the spout and vanished into the wall of water.

We started the search by heading north along the coast of the island, as that is the way the tide runs. Almost immediately we found one of the boats upside-down, with a couple of bodies floating beside it. There was one survivor on the rocks nearby, and we sent down the winch for him. He was a Doctor Maynard, and he felt himself to be lucky to have survived, though he was uninjured and suffering only from cold, as a check by the medic confirmed. We took him to the school, where he said he could get dry and warm and wait for news of his wife who had been on the yacht, and resumed the search. The island lies very close to the Wrecker’s Race, a notoriously dangerous tidal race, and it was likely that the yacht had been pulled into the current. If so it would have been swept towards Vendell, which has steep cliffs where more than one ship has come to grief. If they had failed to start the engines before reaching the island there would be little hope for anyone on board.

We found the second boat floating the right way up, with two people slumped in the bottom, and radioed for the lifeboat to pick them up, waiting till the boat approached to mark the spot. Then we headed out towards Vendell. As we got nearer we could see the wreck pf the yacht lying on its side, jammed between two rocks, water washing over its decks, the stump of the mast showing only a little above the main deck. The winch man went down to check, but there was no one aboard. Although we searched till dark we found no survivors, and nor did the inshore boat, and no bodies either. Possibly some will be washed ashore over the coming days, but I wouldn’t expect all of the to surface. Those lost from the yacht included Nigel Willoughby (the owner) and his wife, Mrs Maynard (the doctor's wife), her sister Lady Russell, Mrs Trelawney, and Miss Burn (one of the school mistresses). The two survivors in the second boat were the Joint Heads of the school, a Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson.

Some of you were asking where the deaths were!
Happy Christmas everyone.

Post subject:  Re: Advent Drabbles Day 24: Island

Hmmm, about time I finished this then I suppose. Isn't it quiet round here, can't see many people around at all, anyone would think it was Christmas or something. So, The Chalet School and the Island - specifically the regatta. Think someone took a little artistic license with their last offering *coughPat* but never mind. And Carolyn's given us Jack Maynard's thoughts too - so what's left for me to do? Of course the best thing would be to relate it to the fact that it is now late on Christmas Eve - but Island was written in the Summer tearm, the Regatta happened in the June or July - how to equate that to Christmas? Well, I could indulge myself I suppose...

"What are you laughing at Hilda?"

The voice broke through Hilda's concentration and she looked up, "I'm sorry Nell, what was that?"

Nell walked across and removed the letter from her friend's hands, "Let me see that," she said, "you've been giggling away for the last twenty minutes - during which time I have put up all our cards, I might add."

Hilda looked round the sitting-room of the house they shared, "And they look wonderful, Nell," she said warmly, "though you'll have Millie Harris reprimand you again if you keep climbing up on the mantelpiece. You know she feels that, at sixty-eight, you should be settling down."

"Hah, time for that when we get old. Now, what were you laughing at - I thought this letter was from Mary-Lou?"

"It is, she included it with our Christmas Card," Hilda replied, she watched her friend attempt to read the letter for a while then sighed, "Nell? Nell, take these," she passed across her own reading glasses, "you'll never manage otherwise. And New Year you are going to the opticians, no excuses."

"No Hilda," Nell said absently, placing Hilda's glasses on her own nose, there was silence for a time then she suddenly started laughing herself.

"Ah, you've reached the part about their Christmas pageant."

Nell continued giggling for a time then looked across at her friend, "It's very hard to imagine Mary Lou as a proud mother of two boys."

Hilda nodded, "Even harder to imagine her being that and a University Lecturer. I know she has had to fight for it but the fact that she's managed is wonderful."

"If anyone could manage it would be Mary Lou," Nell replied, "I love this story, especially as her eldest seems likely to be following in his Mother's footsteps."

"Well it was a mistake giving him the part of the Innkeeper; Mary Lou would never turn away anyone that came to her for help and young George is just the same."

"True, but having our Saviour born in the penthouse of the local Inn doesn't have the same ring to it as being born in a Stable, somehow."

The two smiled at each other and finished the decorations, when they had finished Nell switched off all the lights except the ones of the Christmas tree so they could appreciate them. That done the pair walked out into their back garden and stood staring out at the night sky for a while, the weather being mild and still. After a time Nell stirred,

"Did you read that Mary Lou had heard from Clem Barrass as was?"

"As was?"

"Oh you know what I mean - said that Clem has been touring the States. That her latest paintings have been met with critical acclaim."

"I'm pleased, Clem deserves good fortune - and she has certainly inherited her artistic gifts from both parents - even if they remained dormant until after she had left School. Did you also read about the near catastrophe that occured when she visited Niagara Falls last August?"

"That she fell into the Niagara, leaning over too far to take a photograph, yes I did," Nell nodded, "still it's only as I would expect - Clem seems to make a habit of falling out of boats - do you remember her falling in that year Mary Lou won the over-14 swimming race?"

"I do, though I didn't actually see what happened at the time."

"I did though, and nearly cried laughing. Don't think Clem was ever allowed to forget it."

The pair remained in silence for a time then Nell stirred, "It's just after eleven, so where are we going, your place or mine?"

Hilda smiled, "I've no preference, Nell, whichever Service we go to this evening we'll attend the other tomorrow morning, won't we?"

"True, so what time is your Service tomorrow morning?"

"Seven-thirty I believe."

"Mine's eight-thirty - that settles it, we'll go to yours tonight and mine in the morning - it'll mean an extra hour's lie in."

Hilda looked across sternly, "Nell Wilson don't you think your Father Martin will be disappointed in your obvious sin of laziness?"

Nell considered then shrugged, "No, it'll give me something new to confess. Come on, it's time to go, it's nearly Christmas."

Merry Christmas everyone! :santa:
