...excerpt from The Chalet School Prospectus

...Educational Visits.

At the Chalet School we believe that girls should have the opportunity as part of their education to visit the museums, historic sites, places of geographic importance and cultural significance. To this end we arrange a series of educational visits during the course of the academic year. While some of these are day visits on Saturdays during term time, the main excursions are arranged for the half-term holiday. All girls are welcome to remain at school in order to take advantage of these opportunities.

A recent excursion was to Salzburg where the girls were able to visit the Mozart Museum, the Monastic Library and the Opera House where they attended a performance. Some of the girls, with permission from parents and guardians stayed with an old girl of the School, a former prefect and others were housed in an excellent pension, where they were the only guests.

We take safety and security on these excursions very seriously and our girls travel in modern omnibuses, hired from a reputable company with well trained drivers. In bad weather they will halt a journey and wait for the conditions to improve rather than risk an accident. This happened on the Salzburg trip and the girls travelling in the omnibus were made comfortable overnight and were fed on delightful provisions held in the omnibus.

The bus crept down the road through the driving rain, and stopped where the water flooded across the road. After a moment, with a grinding of gears, it began to move again, backwards this time, up the sloping road and away from the water. Just before a sharp corner it stopped, and the light from the headlights died away. But not before they had lit up a strange creature, watching from behind a rock.

It looked like a cross between some sort of fish and a reptile, though it stood upright. There was a crest running down the back of the head, and wearing a curious net-like garment. It stood and gazed at the bus for a moment, then turned and vanished down the slope and into the water, unseen by anyone on the coach. Not however, by everyone in that area that night. Hidden around the corner behind the coach something else unusual had appeared. The noise of the storm drowned the distinctive sound, and masked the arrival of a blue box more commonly seen on the streets of London. Out of this stepped a man, dressed very much in the style of the school’s eccentric singing master, with a velvet jacket, a frilly shirt with a floppy bow tie, and an overcoat that looked more like a cloak with arm holes. Over his head he held a large black umbrella. Close behind him was a girl with red hair, and wearing a striped top over trousers. Not something your average Chalet School girl would be seen dead in. They slipped past the bus, where the girls were busy having something to eat, and passing out the hot coffee, and went forward gingerly, in time to sea the strange creature turn away from its inspection of the bus. They looked at each other in dismay.

“Sea Devils, Doctor!” said the girl. “But what are they doing so far inland?”

“That’s what I’d like to know, Jo,” replied the Doctor. “I think we’d better find out.”

They followed the Sea Devil down to where the water lapped against the road and stopped. There was nothing that would take them safely under the surface. All they could do was wait. Time passed slowly, and it was well after midnight before anything else happened. Then a group of Sea Devils came up out of the water together, and the Doctor moved forward to meet them. It was at this point that Nell Wilson stepped out of the coach for a breath of fresh air, and saw the little group - or at least the shadowy figures. She came forward to see more clearly and gasped.

“What on earth....!”

“Under Madam. Under the sea to be more accurate,” said the Doctor. “They aren’t going to harm you, or the others in your coach. Are you?” he asked the Sea Devils.

“No. We are just exploring at this time,” said one of the creatures, much to Nell’s amazement. Then they turned and walked slowly back into the water and disappeared.

“Can I believe my eyes, or are they deceiving me?” asked Nell, rather faintly it must be said, as she had yet to be exposed to the trials and tribulations sent by ‘the author’! They would temper her in the future to endure the ‘adventures’ imposed by another author.

“They have told the truth Miss…?”

“Wilson.”

“Miss Wilson. I am the Doctor, and I can assure you that you are very unlikely to ever see them again.”

“Not another doctor,” muttered Nell under her breath, and Jo looked at her sharply, wondering just what she meant.

“I suggest you get back into the coach and try and rest. The water will have gone down a little by morning, and you should be able to reach your destination safely.”

“I think I will,” said Nell, and turned away. She never told anyone of this encounter, which is why there is no report available for study. But she never forgot it either.

Love the Doctor!

'It's no use,' Nell Wilson thought to herself, 'I simply cannot sleep, what time is it?' a quick look at her watch using the light from her torch showed her that it was just before two am. She rose and quietly walked down the coach to check on her charges, 'All asleep, obviously have no guilty consciences to trouble them - unlike you, Helena Wilson,' she laughed softly, realising that it was more likely to be her unusual bed that had caused her sleeplessness. 'What on Earth possessed you to say you would take the case and those two could have the rugs? They're both younger, Joey is far younger than you - she should have the most uncomfortable position - at her age she wouldn't notice.'

Nell quietly let herself out of the coach and got out, managing to stop herself from calling out when she realised that the river was only four feet away from the wheels of the coach, 'Good thing the driver moved back as far as he dared,' she thought. She fumbled in her coat pocket and brought out a cigarette case and lighter then leant against the coach smoking the cigarette, she smiled, 'of course I couldn't let Joey sleep on the case,' she began, 'I'm the leader, Senior Mistress no less, I have to set an example,' she took a deep breath, 'I hope the rest of the coaches got through this alright, perhaps they did, we were the last. It's dreadful though, this not knowing - still, it'll be even worse for Hilda when she hears about this - lucky her, deciding to spend Half Term on the Sonnalpe. I wonder, did she know something like this was going to happen?' A mischievous grin crossed her face at the thought of the indignation with which the young Headmistress would greet that thought, 'Must remember to ask her,' she said most reprehensively.

She finished her cigarette and walked round the back of the coach to try and work out the kinks in her back and legs, 'Definitely getting old, Nell,' she said to herself, 'thirty now, no longer a spring chicken. Who was it said that to me? Oh yes, Edward at the funeral of his mother last year. Never did like him, useless excuse for a man and a cousin. Wonder if he managed to get the red wine stain out of his shirt? Can't see me being invited to any more funerals,' she paused and looked up at the coach, 'wonder if I'll be getting any invites to a couple of weddings though? Wonder how long it'll take Con to finally tell me her true feelings for this Jock Mackenzie? It's not as though it isn't obvious - everytime she speaks about him her entire face lights up. And what of Joey? Funny, what she said to me earlier about ages, it's true, she's barely a term and a half from her own schooldays yet already feels like a friend. I wonder if Hilda is correct about her thoughts on Faith? I'm pleased she warned me so I was ready for Joey - she certainly had a great many questions about the Roman Catholic Faith the last time she joined us at Mass. Funny girl, in some ways she is very deep, thinking through her ideas on Faith and how she wants to worship, yet in other ways she is a child - still sees poor Jack Maynard as 'just a chum' - Poor Jack, waiting forlornly for his bride to grow up.'

Nell shivered slightly, her lack of sleep, rather than the temperature, making her feel cold. She walked back round to the coach door and let herself back in.

*Not so sure about the 'delightful provisions.'
*For someone who's never seen Dr. Who, I'm building up quite a picture, definitely not on the Jem/Jack model.
*Nell #3 could fit into the classic series quite well -- smoking, reading of Jo, and all.:)

Thank you, ADs.
