Please imagine the pictures to go with this.

The Eversafe Trunk Company is proud to present the newest addition to their range:

The Gigantatrunk!

This is the largest trunk the company has ever made and has been designed with the needs of the modern young lady in mind. Suitable for travel or school this trunk will store an entire season's wardrobe without un-necessary creasing. The capacity of the trunk has been increased from four to nine dresses, along with space for all the other accoutrements of a young lady's boudoir, including a compartment for a handy auntie to complain to.

As used by Lavender Leigh of “Lavender Laughs...”
“Lavender will laugh when she sees this trunk” Auntie Sylvia.

Do you know, these drabbles are thoroughly reawakening my love of the books - not that they had grown stale at all, but they're so familiar - and these are illuminating them all in a fantastic new light!

Dear Aunty Madge

Did you know what you were letting me in for with Lavender? I think you did, so thank you very much! She’s going to be horrendous to ’sheepdog’ I can tell already, and it’s only the first night! It all started pretty much straight away when I reported to Miss Annersley’s office, and she was there waiting for me. I took her upstairs to the dormy, as we’re both in Green - was that your doing too? No escape for me at all is there? I was showing her the wardrobe and the number of hangers we’re allowed, and she said it wasn’t enough! How come, when there’s one for each dress we have? You may well ask - she’s brought nine dresses instead of the four allowed! Nine! What were her people thinking about! She wouldn’t take it from me that she wouldn’t be allowed to keep them all, either. Oh no! Just scowled - and oh boy! has she got a scowl! Enough to curdle milk!

She was a bit better when we went down to the Common Room. People were interested to hear that she was the Lavender of the books, and she cheered up a bit, being the entre of attention. Then Amy came in and everyone crowded round to ask about her hols, as you do, and the scowl returned. We were being called up in small groups to unpack, and I was in Lavender’s group, so I saw it all! She got Enid Sothern as her Pre, and it was going OK till they got to her dresses. You can hear everything in the dormy of course. So Enid tells her the same as I did, that she could only have four of the dresses she’d brought, and she needed to choose which ones. Of course, when Lavender refused Enid went for Matey. What else could she do? Matey put her foot down and insisted. When Lavender just chose the first four - with very bad grace I have to say - Matey stopped her. Then she told her to wait, and she went out. She was back in a couple of minutes, and she wasn’t alone. I peeped through the curtains to see, and she had these two strange women with her! I’ve no idea who they were, but they went into Lavender’s cubey, and started discussing her and her clothes in the most personal way you can imagine.

“That blue thing is not you colour,” said one of them.

“Far too sophisticated, and emphasises your lack of figure,” said the other.

They were making Lavender try the dresses on, though I didn’t dare try to see, not with Matey in the cubey. But I listened! I could hear clothes being pulled on and off, and Lavender protesting, though her protests were getting fainter and fainter, and she was obviously feeling a bit shell-shocked. So were the rest of us. I don’t think anyone was doing much unpacking, and the Pres weren’t making us either. I think they were as stunned as we were!

What on earth is that? The brown tunic thing with the flame tie?” the first voice said.

“Not your colour at all. I should leave that!” came the other.

We gasped, because that was the uniform of course. Then Matey spoke.

“That stays!”

There was a deathly silence and then it started again.

“Now that looks good,”

“Yes, it suits your colouring, and the cut of the material hides your angles a bit. Keep this mauve one.”

That was the last of the dresses, or at least the last they tried on. Lavender shrieked something about “leaving her alone”, and I couldn’t stop myself. I peeked through the curtains between our cubeys and was just in time. Lavender leapt forward, and bashed their heads together! They collapsed, and lay there on the floor, still, grey, and to all appearance dead!

Matey took immediate charge and sent for Nurse and two stretchers. That’s when we heard the names of the two women. Trinny and Susannah they were called. Matey had them off to the San as fast as anything, and we had to go on unpacking. But I’m going to have more trouble with that girl, I can feel it. I do wish you hadn’t asked me to look after her!

Love

Bride

Can see the gigantatrunk - I need something like it for holidays, travelling light is not in my vocab.

That should have happened to Trinny and Susannah many years ago.

'I remember my first day at the Chalet School very clearly. Until then I had lived an almost perfect childhood, I was an orphan - my parents had died when I was only five - and I had spent my entire life with my Aunt Sylvia. She was a writer - wrote travel books for children and i was the heroine! We travelled all over the world, never spending very long in any one place, sampling the local culture and getting to know the people. it was a wonderful life. Then the wretched War intervened - we had been in Martinique and had to return home to England very quickly. Aunt Sylvia tried to continue her writing, we visited Scotland next, then Wales, but it wasn't the same. all the joy seemed to have drained out of me, I was missing the excitement, was resenting the fact we had been forced back to this cold, damp, miserable climate. Then Aunt Sylvia insisted I see a Doctor because she was so worried about my health - I hoped the Doctor would say I had to be sent to warmer climes, somewhere where Aunt Symvia could write some more books and I could investigate new cultures - imagine my horror when he suggested SCHOOL.

I begged and pleaded with my Aunt - but she didn't have a great deal of choice - she was quite young for an Aunt - only thirty-three - and this meant that she was called up. She had to find somewhere for me and immediately accepted that wretched Doctor's advice and sent me to the Chalet School. I was furious!!! But it seemed that Aunt Sylvia was determined and I could do nothing to stop her. I decided there and then that I would hate this school and I would not allow it to change me. When we were packing my trunk I managed to placed more than the regulation four dresses in there - even though it was a bit of a squeeze and the dresses got a little creased - but I had always travelled with nine dresses and was not going to change my routine for anything.

At the School they asked this baby to look after me - I was so insulted - and she tried to tell me I could only have four dresses, well I completely ignored her, then when this older girl tried to order me to choose I just sat on the trunk and refused. Of course she went and told tales and next I knew the School Matron was there and, somehow, I couldn't disobey her, she was almost as overwhelming as the Head, and I found myself getting off the trunk and pulling out the dresses. I angrily grabbed the first four when she told me but she stopped me and in a curiously gentle way, changed one of them for the lavender one - my favourite - I still wonder how she knew.

It wasn't a good start.'

Nice that it was her favorite anyhow! Still a shock, though. (Possibly not as much as the middle visitation, though!)

I WANT that trunk. Does it also have wheels/wings and something-to-make-the-airline-not-notice-the-weight?

I like to go back to the days when you sent trunks in advance and only had a small case or bag to travel with. (And the trunk arrived before you, if sent early and addressed correctly!)
