Recipe for an interesting science lesson.

Ingredients:
1 piece of Crystalline Substance
Sulphuric Acid
Litmus Paper
Sarcastic Teacher
Irritated Pupil
Slovenly Prefect
Distilled Water
Blackish Powder
Crucible

Method.
1.Let the Slovenly Prefect loose in the lab. Do not check what she leaves lying around.
2.Allow the Sarcastic teacher and the Irritated Pupil to slowly simmer together. Separate just before boiling point.
3.Mix Irritated Pupil with Crystaline Substance, Sulphuric Acid, and distilled water.
4.Stir well.
5.Keep Sarcastic Teacher well away from the mixture during this next process.
6.Add blackish powder to the mixture and heat. It may be advisable at this point to stand back.
7.Explosion comes here, as does bad smell.
8.Cover your nose with whatever comes to hand.
9.After the explosion transform Sarcastic Teacher into Heroic Teacher (a small dash of courage normally does the trick) and add her to the end result.
10.Introduce Matey
11.Use the litmus paper to tidy up the mess while letting reflections show with a smile.

Nell Wilson stalked into the Staff Room and just stopped herself slamming the door behind. She sank into her seat, dumping a thin sheaf of paper in front of her.

“What’s up Nell?” asked Con Stewart.

“Nothing! Just the fact that I have to fill out this Risk Assessment form. All because Evadne Lannis has to experiment with the task I’d set them.”

“Poor you. But that explosion could have been so much more serious. Evvy could have been badly injured, for a start. And weren’t you warned that this could happen after that affair with Eustacia?”

“To stop Evvy I’d have needed eyes in the back of my head!” Nell’s face suddenly lightened, and her eyes gleamed. “You’re right as usual Con. I suppose I’d better get on with it.”

Nell uncapped her pen and was soon in the throws of the required paperwork. After a period of steady work she sat back with a sigh and contemplated her handiwork.

Post subject:  Re: Advent Drabbles Day Nine: Exploits

The day Evvy blew up the lab? Oh yes, I remember it well - it was the sort of day that should have turned my hair white, it wasn't until a few years later that I found out it needed a far, far greater shock than that. Anyway, from what I can remember it started as just an ordinary day as far as I'm concerned. I was Science and Geography Mistreess at the Chalet School in the Austian Tyrol. It was the nineteen-thirties so, as you can imagine, the school was a very forward thinking one - there were not many girls schools of that time teaching science. The facilities I had were not wonderful - not like the gleaming laboratories of nowadays, certainly - and even for back before the war they were rather primative - not really surprising as the Headmistress at the time was more interested in the Arts and saw Science as just an added extra - and her predecessor was someone that had never even studied at university level - but I'm digressing. You wanted to know about the accident caused by Evadne Lannis? Well, it's probably alright to tell you know that, in fact, it was no accident. Oh yes, it happened as you've been told, the girl did mix up any number of her ingredients and placed the lot, along with an unknown extra powder, in her crucible and turn up the heat - but it was planned.

Who by? Why me of course! You don't think I'm the sort to leave that type of thing to chance, do you? I already knew of the bad habit of that Prefect in leaving powders out when they should have been locked away and I kept a close eye on young Evadne - of course it had to be her - or Cornelia of course. Well on one day she comes in for her lesson and I could tell she was all revved up, she'd fallen foul of a number of my colleagues through the day and was close to screaming pitch. Of course I added to it - sarcasm is a very precise weapon, you know? I kept niggling and niggling, certain that it would cause exactly the action I wanted. Sure enough, after a particularly sharp dig, she went completely over the top - mixed up everything I had laying within reach then even got a small amount of the 'extra' powder I had left lying around. I watched surreptiously to make sure she didn't take too much and, while she was engrossed in her concoction I moved the jar further away - I wanted no tragedies, you understand. Then ...Kaboom! The explosion was fierce and quite reached my hopes and expectations. As I'd been expecting it I was able to usher all the other students out quickly and I grabbed up Evvy herself on the way out.

Why? Why did I do it? Oh that's easy. Evvy's father was an American millionaire - when he heard about what had happened, what his daughter had done, he insisted on re-fitting the lab at his expense - state of the art facilities I had - the envy of scientists throughout the world. He continued to fund science for the rest of his life - even with all the moves the Chalet School always had excellent facilities - a perfect result for one day's planning.

Sounds more like St Trinians.

Good old Nell - use the millionaire parents to fund things.
