Job Description

Position: General Maid

Place of Employment: The Chalet School – Main Campus

Salary Scale: Full board and keep included. Food parcels for starving families. Small allowance to send home.

Hours: A full time live-in position. A half day each fortnight is given as holiday and time may be taken during school vacations.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Dusting
Cleaning
Vegetable preparation
Laundry
General food preparation
Washing up
Reception of visitors.
Preparing and carrying trays.
Being scared by middles pranks
Seeing the Devil manifest in the music room.

Essential Qualifications:
Belonging to or recommended by the Pffeffien family.
Good loud penetrating scream.
Face that will turn as white as milk.

Desirable Experience:
Being ruled by Karen's rod of iron.

The fact that Anna was the only one who managed to fulfill all of these conditions (after all, no one else ever saw the devil) was the reason that she was hounered with promotion to the position of cook, cleaner, and general dogsbody to the Maynard family then?

Three strange creatures were gathered in a spaceship sitting in geosynchronous orbit about the Earth. They seemed to be made of shiny metal, the heads shaped something like two flattish bowls stuck together at the rim.

“I visited a place in the mountains, where they educate their young,” said one of them in a metallic sounding voice. “They were preparing a meal with potatoes. First they boiled them.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“Then they added butter and milk.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“Then they mashed everything together.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.“

“They are very primitive.”

“Yes. Some of the young were making something, so I stayed to watch. They had a covering made of blue material, and a long white garment which they put together.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

Then they painted a face on the blue part.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“They didn’t seem to be doing anything else with it so I waited and watched. That night they crept out onto the roof, and dangled the thing over the edge.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“After a while they pulled it up and tried to go back inside. That’s when they found the door locked.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“When they got upset, someone opened it and they went inside and were sent to bed. The object was left on some furniture. In the morning, a servant found it and screamed. The girls were punished for being out at night.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.”

'Well that didn't work,' the Devil thought crossly, 'and I was doing so well, influencing those children to make me, getting them to hang me out of the roof - if I could have managed to get to the American I'd have been laughing. Then that Joey Bettany appears and promptly confiscates me. I thought I'd still manage a little possession the following morning, if it had been any other Maid I could have forced her to possess me, become one with me. But it had to be Anna. Lucky for me that she wasn't believed - my heart nearly stopped when I heard her blurt out that she'd seen me - luckily though it was to that Wilson character - she hasn't an ounce of imagination in her! So here I am, about to be dismantled, before I've managed to cause any havoc - it's very disappointing.’

‘What’s this though? I recognise that mind, that face - it’s that Joey Bettany again - I should slay her, destroying my plans, thwarting my ambitions…wait a sec, I might be able to use her - yes, there, just there - not her exactly, but passed on to her children - it’ll be a little wait but what’s time to one such as I? I will cause havoc once more, just you wait.'
