Post subject:  A Surfeit of Doctors

You people have a lot to answer for, you know that? Well, since madness seems wanted, madness is what you get, for as long as my PBs condescend to supply.

The title, obviously, is partly inspired by Lesley's 'A Surfeit of Rach(a)els' but as far as I know will not be a spoof of that epic. I think, but you never know...

Enjoy the ride.
***

“Where are we going now, Doctor?” Rose Tyler asked.

The Doctor grinned at her. “The DQ. It’s time for you to meet some really interesting aliens.”

Rose eyed him warily. “You think? Weren’t the Cybermen and Daleks interesting enough?”

“Daleks, heh. Wait ‘til you meet the Vidiians. And the Borg. And the Talaxians- Actually, forget the Talaxians.”

Rose looked up. “Why? What do they do?”

The Doctor started wandering around the TARDIS, jabbing at random controls with his finger. “Do? Nothing. Not a single little thing. Very nice people, the Talaxians.”

Rose looked puzzled. “Then why-”

The Doctor rolled his eyes. “Honestly, Rose. Haven’t you learnt anything? It’s very simple. Talaxians can’t cook. I refuse to have anything to do with anyone who can’t cook. Mind,” he added thoughtfully, “I didn’t particularly enjoy Kazon Eye Stew the last time I was in the vicinity, but the Vidiians are really very- Ah!”

“What’s happened?”

“Not a thing!” the Doctor responded, moving around the TARDIS with the grace and enthusiasm of a giant grasshopper. “We’ve arrived, that’s all.”

“H’mmm,” said Rose, peering cautiously around the door.

The sight that met her eyes did not look especially alien. It didn’t even look dangerous. It was not, however, a sight that an inner-city council estate girl was accustomed to seeing.

“It’s green!” Rose called out to the Doctor who was complimenting the TARDIS on yet another safe landing.

“That’s nice!” the Doctor called back, somewhat absently. A pause. “Hang on. Did you say green?”

“Yeah.”

The Doctor’s head poked out of the TARDIS door, just above Rose’s. “Aw, that’s alright! I thought for a minute we ended up in a Borg cube. But not this time, eh? Not this time. The old girl did her job right.” The Doctor slipped out of the TARDIS, ignoring Rose’s alarmed squeaks, and took a deep breath. “Lovely, that. Nice fresh air.” He grinned and smacked his lips, then frowned. “Well, what are you standing there for? Come on!”

Rose sighed. “Yes, Doctor,” and followed him out onto the rolling hills of what looked suspiciously like a golf course.

*

Several hills- or holes- away, two men were strolling along. They were both tall, and both wore the green-topped uniform of a Starfleet Medic or Science officer, but there the resemblance ended. One had olive skin, dark eyes, and very little in the way of hair. His grumpy expression was almost habitual. The other had blonde hair, fair skin, bright blue eyes, and a smile that melted the heart of even a starship captain. Despite a rocky start, Voyager’s duo of holographic doctors were rapidly starting up a friendship.

Not, of course, that it had started that way. No, initially they’d been very suspicious of each other. Jack had kept talking about someone called Joey (he couldn’t remember anything other than the name) and a disease called TB. The Doc, on the other hand, had been mortally offended by the fact that Captain Janeway had apparently taken a shine to the new doctor, but on being reassured that he still had the position of CMO, he’d relaxed.

And besides, it had been funny watching B’Elanna vent her temper on someone else for a change. He didn’t think he’d ever forget the look on Jack’s face the day the other hologram had soothingly told the nearly five months pregnant Chief Engineer that she should go to bed with some hot milk and a little dose, regardless of the fact that Voyager had just emerged from yet another space battle. B’Elanna had stared at Jack in disbelief, and then erupted- threatening, among other things, to turn Jack into a milk cow that she could dump in “that bloody simulation of Tom’s.”

The Doc hadn’t dared ask whether B’Elanna meant the Fair Haven sim or the Chalet School one. From the look on her face, he rather fancied she meant the former. He also knew she wasn’t above suggesting to one of the locals that a nice roast beef dinner would be just the thing. It had been almost as entertaining watching Jack’s face go from curiously condescending to slightly panicked, as he realised that B’Elanna was perfectly capable of doing everything she said. Needless to add, the new Doctor Maynard had kept well out of the Chief Engineer’s way ever since.

“Ah!” sighed the Doctor in satisfaction. “What more could a hologram ask, eh? Nice photonic sunshine, a good tee time, and a friend to share it with. It’s been a good afternoon, hasn’t it?”

Jack bent down to retrieve his ball before grinning back. “Certainly has. Now, are you coming to the School with me? Apparently half the Middles are down with Chicken Pox.”

The Doc frowned. “School? Middles? Chicken pox?” He’d been enjoying the golf so much he’d completely forgotten that the course had been laid out behind the San in the Chalet School sim. Or rather, he’d remembered it was a sim, and that their real life was on Voyager. Jack had apparently forgotten.

Their real life was on Voyager, the Doctor opened his mouth to say. He shut it again.

Wasn’t it?

The Doctor strode confidently across the golf course, much to Rose's trepidation. However, he was a Time Lord, which presupposed he knew where he was going. Satisfied with this piece of illogic, Rose tagged along and repressed some of her more cutting comments when they'd dragged themselves up from yet another tumble.

By this point the Doctor was starting to look mildly annoyed.
"This is a golf course, right?"

"Umm... yeah."

"For nice little old people, right?"

"Uh..."

"So- why can't they be safer? Don't you have something called Elf'n'Safety on this planet of yours?"

"Doctor-"

"Someone really ought to complain, you know. Oh look, there's someone over there. She looks important. I'll complain to her."

"How do you know she's not something in disguise?" Rose asked in sudden panic. No reply. "Doctor!"

"I'm just going to ask- ah, madam. Can I have a word with you?"

The woman he'd accosted looked him up and down very, very slowly. After a moment's silence, she said, "Since you're already having a word with me, I don't think there's much doubt about your ability to do so."

The Doctor frowned.

Rose's nose screwed up in a fashion Mickey had once said looked cute. Demented, but cute.

The woman, on the other hand, was well into her stride. "The question, sir, is not whether you can have a word with me, but in fact whether you may."

"H'mmm," said the Doctor, who seemed suddenly deep in thought.

Rose glared. "An' I s'pose you're an English teacher an' all, aren't ya, miss?"

The woman's piercing blue-grey eyes fell on Rose. Fell,in fact, quite a long way. Rose was rather diminutive.

"As a matter of fact," she said gently, "I am. Now, how may I assist you?"

"H'mm," said the Doctor again. "MMMMmm."

Their companion shot him a steely glare. "I think you are in need of a dictionary, sir!"

"I don't need a dictionary," the Doctor told her absently. "Got all the words I'll ever need in my head. And what's not in my head is in the TARDIS."

"The what?"

Rose smirked. "Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. Don't know as much as you thought you did, do ya?"

"Listen here, lady," the Doctor interrupted, "there's something very wrong here. We shouldn't be here. This the blimmin' Delta Quadrant, for crying out loud. We're thousands of light years away from your planet! I was expecting Borg and Vidiians, not a pedantic English mistress!"

"Maybe," Rose put in thoughtfully, "she's not real."

The woman raised a finely shaped eyebrow. "I assure you, my dear, I am quite real."

"H'mm," said the Doctor again. "Good thinking, Rose. I should have checked that." And he fished out his sonic screwdriver....

Brilliant. brilliant, brilliant. You've captured the Doctor (the David Tennant variety anyway) and Rose perfectly. Loved the can/may thing coming in so quickly too.

After the last time he’d died, Ensign Harry Kim had decided that his mission in life was to remain invisible. However, given the fact that he was Operations officer aboard Voyager, this aspiration was doomed to failure. All the same, Harry still gave it his best try, and aimed to say nothing more exciting that ‘Aye, Captain’ each shift. Needless to add, he rarely succeeded.

Today, however, he was doing rather well. Space was boring, and the senior staff were equally bored. The Captain and First Officer were in the ready room, from whence strange noises emitted from tiem to time. Tom was humming some twentieth century ditty at the helm in a manner calculated to annoy. Specifically, to annoy Tuvok, who wasn’t as Vulcan as he liked to think. B’Elanna was taking apart the Engineering console on the Bridge for the pure fun of it, while Seven of Nine stood behind her and made ‘helpful’ suggestions. Some Nameless Ensigns stood at the back of the bridge and took bets about how long it would be before Seven and B’Elanna started rolling around the floor in another one of their regular cat-fights.

Consequently, it was a wonder that anyone heard the high pitched beep that began to sound from Ops. The beep was insistent, however, and eventually roused Harry from his rapt contemplation of Seven’s rear end. He checked his readings, and then made the call he always dreaded.

“Kim to the Captain.”

Pause.

“Kim to the C-”

“I heard you the first time, Mr Kim,” came Kathryn Janeway’s gravelly voice. “What is it?”

“And it better be important!” Chakotay added through the com link.

Harry swallowed. “Er, ma’am, sir, there’s life signs on the um, holodeck?” His ended on a squeak.

“There are life signs on the holodeck every day, Mr Kim,” came Janeway’s impatient voice. “I don’t think this qualifies as crunch time!”

“Yes, ma’am, I mean, Captain- but there’s too many!”

Two exasperated sighs could be heard. Then first the Captain and her First Officer emerged from the ready room, both looking a little worse for wear.

“What’s this about too many life signs?” Janeway demanded, coming to stand uncomfortably close Harry.

Harry pointed to the appropriate reading and tried to ignore the fact that the Captain was, quite literally, breathing down his neck. “There, Captain.”

“Yes, I see that, Mr Kim. There’s nothing wrong with my- oh, I see. Yes, this does bear investigating.”

Harry’s knees weakened with relief when the Captain gave him her best I’m-so-proud-of-you smile and the obligatory pat on the shoulder. He had been a Good Boy.

Meanwhile, Janeway had turned to Tuvok and distracted him from glaring at the still-humming Tom.
“Tuvok, we have intruders in Holodeck whatever it is. You’re with me. Commander, you have the Bridge.”

And they were gone.

Not that anyone cared. They were too busy watching Seven and B’Elanna pull each other’s hair out.

 Yes, I wonder myself...

I've spent most of the past two years in the Voyager fandom, and have written a number of serious VOY fics.... but I never succeeded in doing the crazy variety. Obviously, I needed the input of you crowd to persuade my brain to take the more demented track.. :D

I don't believe it! How could you go so long being serious? It just isn't in character!

:P :P :P

Believe it. The only wacky VOY fic I posted was a rather odd effusion about Seven wrapping Naomi in bandages. It wasn't for lack of trying either. I just didn't get the responses needed to sustain insanity. And naturally not having Vikki on side for purple llamas and whatnot was a real handicap. Oh, and a completely insane Dr Who fic based on 'School Reunion'- but what's two to the many I started or contributed to here?

Maybe it's to do with expectations- the first drabble I got involved in was Venables. That speaks for itself!

now I've got to try and work out whether the next post starts with Jack and the Doctor, The Doctor & Co, or Janeway's entry into the holodeck... which do you think?

Another place is fanfiction.net- search for Mizvoy. I can guarantee you her stuff is excellent (unless you're a J/7er in which case I don't know..). The 'Belle Colony' series is fabulous.

I haven't forgotten about this, I promise..
