Post subject:  A mysterious aroma

Sharlie Andrews, Acting Headmistress of the Chalet School since a disastrous skiing accident had wiped out most of the senior staff at one go, stalked along the corridor, a grim expression on her face. She was still finding her feet in the role, as well as trying to come to terms with the loss of so many good friends, and her emotions were rather fragile. For the past few days a strange, rather yeasty smell had been permeating this part of the school, and she was determined to get to the bottom of it. Opening doors as she went to check on the rooms, she left the main part of the school behind, and entered the new wing, only just completed and not yet in use as dormitory accommodation, being still unfurnished, though the classroom accommodation on the ground floor was already being put into play. The smell was getting stronger and stronger, not altogether unpleasant, but not something that should be floating around a girls boarding school, and Sharlie’s face was growing grimmer and grimmer, a sign that would have had any erring middle quaking in their shoes had they been around to see it. This part of the building was strictly out of bounds to all the girls.
Then she threw open a door that led into what would become a bathroom for the nearby dormitories, and knew, before she switched on the light, that she had found the source of the smell. A long table down one side of the room held a collection of demi-johns, full of a deep red liquid and all bubbling merrily, but this was not where the smell was coming from. In the middle of the floor was a large plastic bin. Stretched over the top was what looked suspiciously like a pair of nylon tights, with the legs securely knotted off and hanging forlornly over the side of the bin. The tights were being used to strain a disgusting-looking mash of something no longer identifiable as anything edible. It had clearly been fermenting, which accounted for the yeasty smell that had attracted her attention in the first place.
“This is no Middles prank,” said Sharlie to herself. “It’s far too well organised, and has clearly been going on for some time. Now who could it be?”
As she thought this, there was the sound of brisk footsteps coming down the corridor, and a familiar starchy rustling noise. Then Matey bustled into the room.
“Oh! It’s you Sharlie. You’ve found it then.” she said. “I thought home made wine would make a nice change from jam for the School Sale.”

Lovely Pat!
As an ex-home-made-wino myself, I rather thought this was where it was leading :D
Thanks

Why should Matey making wine make you worry about me? It's a perfectly normal occupation!

It's just as well I don't like red wine. I don't think I could look at it in the same way again. It's like raspberry coulis - I eat it, but not without an inward shudder at the thought of a particular line from John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi. And let's not mention what one of our insane drabbles did to strawberry jam, although I grant you that was EBD's fault to begin with!

*thinks if this is the way Pat normally makes wine, she's seriously disturbed*

*backs away slowly*

Yes, you didn't actually say what or who the wine was being brewed from did you?!

Could have been anything. Rose petals make a lovely light rose wine. Elderberries make a great port. But the stage of filtering off the mash is smelly and messy, and the mash looks revolting.
