Cecil snuggled under her covers. It was the first week of her holidays and she was finally finished with school. It had been a difficult year and she was glad the school year was over. She could only hope she had passed all her exams and could go to University.
"Cecil," called Joey, "Are you getting up today or tomorrow."
"I’m coming," said Cecil. "It’s the holidays Mama."
"I know but that doesn’t mean you can sleep them away," retorted her Mother. "It’s the middle of the morning already."
Cecil, got up slowly, she love snuggling in bed in the mornings, though once she was up she was generally wide awake from the word go. Neither of her sisters Felicity, nor Phil were morning people. In fact Felicity only seemed to wake up around four o clock in the afternoon.
“What are you planning on doing today,” asked Joey when Cecil sat down at the kitchen table.
“I don’t know,” she said, “maybe go for a wander.”
"Maybe you should see a doctor," said Joey with a deep breath. Joey had been unsure how to broach this subject with her daughter. Cecil looked at her in surprise.
"Cecil," said Joey gently, “You haven’t had a period since last summer holidays and that isn’t right. I think you need checking out. I think it would be easier for you to see a female doctor in Interlaken,” she added, “We could make an appointment and go down for the day. People talk and I think it would be hard for you going to the San in regards to something like this.”
“Okay,” said Cecil surprised. She wasn’t particularly worried about not getting her periods but she supposed her Mother knew more about it

A year is a long time to go without, but I don't think I'd be complaining. Wink

Interesting ....if this is almost a year, then it can't be the obvious, but stress perhaps? Eating disorder?

Thanks Fiona

Cecil was able to get into to see a female GP that afternoon. Dr Marie Harms was a friendly doctor who managed to put Cecil at her ease. Much to Cecil’s surprise, Joey sent her in on her own.
“Your over eighteen now,” was all she said.
“So,” said the doctor, “what seems to be the problem.”
“I haven’t had my period for over a year now,” said Cecil, “and Mama thought I should get it checked out.”
“All right,” said Dr Harms gently. “How many periods have you had.”
“Just the one,” said Cecil nervously. “I had my first one last July and I haven’t had any since.”
“Have you had any spotting.”
“A little in October but it didn’t end up being any more.” Answered Cecil. “That can happen explained Dr Harms. “Often when your studying your final year at school, the stress can affect your body and your periods stop. We can do some blood tests and an internal to check to see if everything is there. The fact that you’ve had one period usually means all the parts should be there that need to be. If you hadn’t then that could have been a possibility. There’s no chance you could be pregnant is there?” She asked concerned.
“No,” said Cecil shocked, She was horrified the doctor had thought she had had sex before being married. “I haven’t ever had sex or even kissed a boy.” Cecil was starting to feel highly embarrassed.
“I just had to ask,” smiled Dr Harms. “Now hop up on the table and I need to do an internal check. No that seems to be all right. Now we need to take some blood tests, which will check your hormone levels.” The doctor quickly completed the tests.
“Now Cecil,” she said, “the results will be back in a couple of days, so I will need to see you then. You’ll need to make an appointment for Thursday at the earliest.”
“Okay,” said Cecil feeling a little dazed

Nice to see Joey treating Cecil as an adult - Cecil didn't have her first period until she was seventeen? That's very late.

*Worries*

Thanks Fiona.

I was thinking eating disorders, but maybe someone would have picked up on that sooner ... and if it's been over a year then that seems to rule out the obvious cause. Intrigued now Confused !

Embarassed Have realized that I've a fairly huge error in timing. I kind of need the characters a decade younger later in the drabble for it to be fairly historically correct and only know the Australian laws on things, so have changed the characters. Hope that doesn't cause too much confusion and have posted a little background as well, so here goes the amended drabble. Embarassed

Sophie snuggled under her covers. It was the first week of her holidays and she was finally finished with school. Her final year at High School, her HSC year had been difficult and she was glad the school year was over. She could only hope she had passed all her exams and could go to University.

“I don’t know,” she said, “maybe go for a wander.”
“Maybe you should see a doctor,” said Josette with a deep breath. Josette had been unsure how to broach this subject with her daughter. Sophie looked at her in surprise.
“Sophie,” said Josette gently, “You haven’t had a period since last summer holidays and that isn’t right. I think you need checking out. I think it would be easier for you to see a female doctor in Melbourne,” she added, “We could make an appointment today and get it checked out.

Sophie went back to see the doctor three days later. The doctor looked at her and took a deep breath,
“Sophie the news isn’t great. Your LSH and FSH levels are completely out of balance. They are the levels of someone going into menopause. We can’t do anything to resolve them and it will mean that you will be unable to conceive naturally.”
“Does that mean I will never be able to have kids?” Sophie asked in a small voice.
“I’m afraid not,” replied the doctor. “I’d like you to see a gynecologist and get checked out further and it’s always good to get a second opinion.”
“Okay,” said Sophie, thinking desperately, ‘please God don’t let this be real. Please let it be some bad dream that I can wake up from.’
Sophie walked out of the doctor’s office and stared unseeingly in front of her. Her mother Josette Russell had migrated from England when she was eighteen. Initially she had come out to Australia with her parents: James and Madge Russell, her sister Sybil and two younger brothers Kevin and Kester. I was only meant to come for twleve months before I started my Radiology training back in England she had told her daughters, but after traveling for a few months, I was bored and Dad said I should at least start my course here and get credits for it back in England. I met your Dad on my first day at Uni. He was the brother of one of my friends there, not that I knew that at the time she added. He was just the cute guy who nearly knocked me over, but I fell in love and ended up staying on in Australia. We became engaged a year after we started going out and married two years after that, when I was twenty-two. Then you eight kids trouped in, she ended with a laugh. Sophie had five brothers and two sisters and was the second youngest in her family. The five boys came first, then 20 year old Rachel, then herself and lastly the youngest, 16 year old Maggie. Sophie dawdled inside.
“What did the doctor say,” asked Josette, concerned.
“She said my periods have stopped and so I can’t have kids. She wants me to get checked out by the gynecologist,” said Sophie baldly. Josette wiped her hands.
“Oh Soph,” was all she said.
“Oh well. I can always foster or adopt,” said Sophie.

Oh poor Sophie - how young to be having an early menopause. So are we going to see them trying surrogacy when she's older?

Sophie’s GP referred her onto a Gynecologist, who organized for more blood tests and an Ultrasound, but all the tests did was confirm the initial diagnosis and none of it held out any hope. All Sophie could think of was ‘this isn’t real. How can I not be able to have kids? I’m only eighteen.’ It was when the official diagnosis had come in Josette suggested that her daughter see a Naturopath.
“You never know Sophie. Sometimes Naturopaths can find solutions doctors can’t. It’s worth a try.”
Sophie agreed. She was living more in a dream than usual and Josette was worried about her. A part of her was feeling guilty that she had been able to have kids but her daughter couldn’t and if she could change it then she would have.
