Part three still unlocated

The long weekend that Joey spent in the Tirol provided plenty of opportunities for Jack and Anna. Rosli was often out with the younger children, making the most of the lovely weather, and so they were able to indulge themselves without worrying about having to keep quiet for fear of disturbing anyone. It is true that one passerby stopped in astonishment on hearing the sounds floating through the open windows one lunchtime, but after lingering a few moments, she went on to the village wondering if the sounds were authentic, and deciding that if they were, then she would like to meet the man capable of inspiring them. It was not difficult to find out that Dr Maynard was the gentleman living at Freudesheim, in fact the hotelier’s daughter waxed lyrical about him for some time, increasing the visitor’s wish to meet him. As Jack remained closeted with Anna – actually they were only closeted on one occasion that weekend as they were making the most of the freedom to use various other furnishings – As Jack remained at Freudesheim with Anna for the whole of Joey’s absence, the visitor had to wait until later in the week, but once Jack put in an appearance again, a glimpse of him was all she needed to confirm her decision that she must meet him, and she contrived to way lay him on his way home from the San one afternoon. When she returned to the hotel that evening, she was satisfied that what she had heard had indeed been authentic.

Jo had returned from her trip to the Tiernsee with news that she had found a place they could buy there for their summer home. Over the next few weeks, Jack made a quick trip there to deal with the logistics of purchasing the house, incidentally finding the time to make the acquaintance of Marta Pfeiffen, and a second trip to sign paperwork brought him back into touch with Bettine Tribauch who still lived in Spartz, although their twins had moved to Innsbruck to work. Jack took a keen interest in hearing about how they were getting on and visited Bettine repeatedly for news of them, incidentally providing her with another set of twins in the process.

Despite the pouring rain that kept most of the family housebound during their visit to the Tirol that summer, Jack managed to get out most days and found the holiday provided further opportunities to be reunited with old friends, Luisa in Geisalm, Agnetta in Briesau and Lise in Seespitz, as well as to make new ones, Karin in Scholastika, Johanna a little further away in Umfert, and Colette who was visiting the Kron Prinz Karl for the summer. And a trip to Mayrhofen introduced him to Katchen, who managed to convince him that it would be worth visiting the little town again – and often. On one visit Katchen was not in, but her maid showed great initiative in dealing with the guest in her employer’s absence.

Anna was not quite so impressed with the summer holiday. With the family confined to the house, she was not often alone and it was difficult to get the chance to be with Jack.

“You do not want to be with me any more.” She accused him when she finally met him in the boathouse one afternoon.

“Of course I do Anna.” He protested, trying to pull her into his arms. “I’ll show you how much I want to be with you.”

She dodged away from his embrace. “You are always off with another woman!”

“But I always have been, it has never bothered you before.” Once again Jack reached for her, and this time managed to catch hold of her.

“It is not the others that bother me. You have other women, I have other men, it has always been that way. It is that you are not with me that bothers me.”

“I am with you now.” Jack pointed out pulling her closer to him.

She squirmed in his arms. “Yes, but only …” She paused and her movements changed from an escape attempt to something else. “We will continue this discussion later.” She stated and prevented him from making any further reply.

Some people are just so impatient

The discussion was continued on the day they left. Jack and Anna had got up two hours before the rest of the family to load the car, which Jack would drive back while Jo, Anna and the children travelled by train. As Jack sat on the back seat, trying to fit two cases and a bag of rugs in the floorspace behind the driver’s seat, Anna closed the door then came around to the other side.

“So do you want me?” she asked, sliding onto the seat next to him and pulling the door closed.

“Of course I want you.” Jack answered, turning from his task to face her.

“Are you sure? I do not mind the other women as long as you still want me.”

“I always want you, Anna.” he assured her.

“Always? Even now?”

In answer, Jack pulled a couple of rugs from the bag he had just crammed into place, and drew her down to the seat underneath them.

By the time the rest of the family arose, Jack had finally managed to fit those cases and the bag in their space, having answered Anna’s question to her evident satisfaction.

He was still thinking about that as he drove through the mountains towards Switzerland, and was so involved in his thoughts that he almost didn’t see a car pulled up at the side of the road with a young woman standing looking disconsolately at it. Just in time he spotted it and pulled over, instantly dismissing the memories to focus on the present.

“May I help you at all?” he asked, as he got out of the car.

“We’ve run out of fuel. My husband has walked down to get some more.”

“He could be some time.” Jack told her. “How long have you been waiting there?”

“About twenty minutes,” she replied, “how long do you think he will be.”

“Probably at least another two hours before he can find some place with petrol and get back.” Jack told her. “That’s a long lonely wait on your own.”

“Are you in a hurry? Would you mind waiting around for some of the time?”

Jack looked at his watch. He had plenty of time for the drive, and was not expected to get back to Freudesheim until the following day.

“I have a flask of coffee, if you’d like some.” He offered, and leant into the car to reach it. “Here you are.”

“Thank you.” She reached for the flask, her fingers closing over his, and looked up into his eyes. “Can I offer you anything in return?”

The two-hour wait turned out to be three, but it was neither long nor lonely.

Whilst the others are away at the Gather, Anonybunny shall play...

It was early evening when Jack arrived at the hotel he had booked for the night after stopping there on his way to the Tirol, and the receptionist was just going off duty. She postponed leaving the hotel, however, until she had welcomed Jack back again.

He requested an early morning wake-up call, and this was provided by the chambermaid, although he did not get out of bed as early as he planned, as she improved (in his opinion) on the usual alarm by sliding into the bed and providing a tactile rather than auditory arousal.

Having promised to return to the hotel whenever he was passing, even if he didn’t book a room, Jack finished his journey back to the platz without further incident, and spent the night answering Anna’s question a few more times.

The next day saw Jack back at work, catching up with the correspondence that had gathered during his holiday and dealing with those issues at the San that only he could deal with. By the time he had visited his patients and was reaching the end of the pile of correspondence marked ‘most urgent’ it was quite late, and he was startled when there was a knock at his door.

“Come in.” he called, his attention still on the papers in front of him.

“Dr Maynard?”

“Yes, if you’d like to take a seat I’ll be with you in a moment.” He glanced up with a vague smile and gestured towards the comfortable sofa at one end of the room.

“Dr Jack Maynard?”

“Yes, please excuse me a min…” His words were cut short as her palm contacted with his cheek with a resounding slap.

“What the?” Jack jumped to his feet, finally giving his attention to his visitor, who was clearly very angry.

“How could you?!” she demanded.

“How could I what?” Jack asked bewildered, aware that he had never met this woman before in his life.

“You seduced my sister and abandoned her! You … you … swine!”

Jack took a deep breath, and walked around his desk. “Who is your sister?” he asked, managing to retain his calm.

“Oh so you seduce and abandon and forget her do you?” raged his visitor. “You are despicable!” She advanced towards him her hand raised again.

Jack caught hold of her wrist before she could make contact. “If you tell me who you are,” he said, rationally, “I might then know who your sister is and maybe we can get to the bottom of this.”

She wrenched her arm from his grip as if it burned her, but could not deny that he had a reasonable point. “I am Melissa Davenham. My sister is Delores Davenham.”

“Delores Davenham.” Jack repeated, thoughtfully.

“Yes. My poor innocent sister.” Melissa paced angrily. “I’ve heard that you have a habit of seducing and abandoning women, so maybe you can’t remember her among the multitudes.”

“Actually I do remember.” Jack replied. “And may I assure you that while I might have a habit of seducing women, I most certainly do not abandon them. And in fact, in your sister’s case, it was the other way around.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was the one who seduced me.” Jack told her, a reminiscent smile curving his lips as he remembered the determined campaign Delores had launched during his last visit to England, and its resounding success.

“I don’t believe … Delores wouldn’t.” She faltered. Looking properly at the man in front of her for the first time, she suddenly saw why Delores would have. She shook her head to clear it. “Anyway, even if she did, you still abandoned her!”

“Not at all. She was the one who ended it.”

“Why would she end things with you?” The question was out of her mouth before she realised she’d thought it.

“Apparently, I was a practice run.” Jack gave a wry grin. “She had another target in mind, and wanted to be sure her tactics would work.”

“Another target? Who? And what happened?”

“I don’t know who they were, but I’m sure her tactics would be very successful, so presumably she is with whoever he is now. Unless he’s the person you need to accuse of abandoning her.”

“Well, perhaps I jumped to conclusions and owe you an apology.” She admitted.

“Perhaps you do,” Jack answered, ruefully rubbing his cheek.

“I’m sorry.” She said abruptly, “I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion. I’m going to have to talk to Delores.” She turned and left his office.

Jack had forgotten the incident by the following week; his memory lapse aided by a very distracting new nurse. So he was very surprised to return to his office at the end of a long day to find it occupied by Melissa.

“Miss Davenham!” he exclaimed.

“Dr Maynard,” she rose to her feet and addressed him formally. “It seems I misjudged you previously. I have spoken with Delores, who has confirmed what you told me, and expanded on some of the details. It would appear I owe you an apology.”

“A letter would have sufficed; you needn’t have gone to the trouble of coming back here.” Jack answered.

Melissa took two steps towards him before she replied. “Perhaps. But after attacking you personally as I did, I felt the least I could do would be to apologise personally.”

“Thank you, I appreciate that.” Jack smiled at her, then appreciated it even more Melissa’s hand touched his arm and she kissed the cheek she had slapped, before proceeding with her apology in a very personal way.

“I hope you have no further complaints against me?” Jack asked, when he had finished accepting her apology and demonstrating his complete forgiveness of her.

“Absolutely nothing to complain about.” Melissa assured him, although it wasn’t long before she started to moan again.

This time, Jack didn’t forget Melissa, despite the nurse’s best efforts, or those of her even more distracting colleague, and when Melissa returned to England, she carried a permanent double reminder of her visit.

Anna was in the hallway when Jack entered the house, as she quite often was. Sometimes it gave them an opportunity for a quick kiss or caress, although on one occasion they had got carried away and it was fortunate Mike made such a clatter as he came down the stairs as they only just had time to retreat in short order into the cloakroom.

She ran her eyes over him with an unmistakeable promise in them, then paused. “You have lipstick on your collar!”

Jack raised his hand to his collar and twisted his head to try to see, but could not. “Where?”

“Just here” her fingertips grazed his neck as she indicated the offending smudge. “You’d better remove it before you go and see her.”

“I will do.” Jack moved towards his study unknotted his tie as he spoke.

“You’d better remove this too.” Anna said, undoing the top two buttons of his shirt.

“Does that have lipstick on it too?” Jack asked, taking a step backwards.

Anna appeared not to hear his question. “You’d better remove these too.” This time it was his waistband she was undoing.

“Surely there’s no lipstick …”

Anna kicked the study door shut behind them. “It is best to be certain.” She told him. “You don’t want to risk missing any do you?”

Jack most certainly did not. Especially as she was no longer talking about lipstick.

Jack returned to Freudesheim after a strenuous day during which, among other things, he had had to deal with two matrons, an extremely grateful mother, and a (future – now) mother, looking forward to a quiet evening. He entered the salon to find Joey in tears.

“Jo, what is it?” he asked, full of concern.

“I … I … I’m just so unhappy.” She sobbed.

Jack put his arm around her shaking shoulders. “What’s making you so unhappy?”

“I can do it any more, Jack?”

“Do what, Jo?” he asked puzzled.

“I just feel so guilty.”

“Guilty about what?”

“About Cecil. Everyone talks about how like Con she is, how they can tell she’s her sister. And she’s not.”

“Of course she is. You’re her mother.”

“But you’re not her father.”

“To all intents and purposes I am, Jo. I promised you and I’m not going to back out on that. It’s my name on the birth certificate isn’t it. And I’ll never treat her any differently from any of our other children. She’s still only little, but I love her and think of her as mine.”

“But I know she’s not, and I feel so terrible about it Jack. How could I have done that to you?”

“Jo, it really doesn’t matter. I told you before, you didn’t do anything so very terrible.”

“Yes, but …… but that’s not it.”

“What else is it?”

“I still want to … want to …”

“You still want to be with him? Or with someone else?”

“Yes.” Jo burst into a fresh flood of tears. “I’m so sorry Jack. I’ve tried to avoid him ever since then and I didn’t answer his letters, but every time I see him … like today all those feelings came back and I wanted to … to do it all again with him.”

“Then why don’t you?”

“Jack!” Jo sat up straight, startled out of her tears.

“Well, why not?”

“It would be wicked! I couldn’t do it again! I shouldn’t have done it the first time! And to have enjoyed it and want to do it again …”

“Jo, you should enjoy it. That is where I always failed you. So make the most of it.”

“But how can I do that to you?”

“Do that to me? Jo, I told you I’m not a faithful man. I make the most of every opportunity.”

“But it’s different for men.”

Jack sighed. “Jo, how can it be different for men if it’s not for women? It takes both, you know.”

“Then why do I feel so guilty about it?”

Jack hugged her to him, not knowing quite what to say, then an idea came to him. “Jo, you know I’m going over to England soon for the annual meeting for the two Sans?”

“Yes.” the reply was muffled.

“Well, how about you come with me, and we’ll make an appointment with Sir James Talbot?”

“Why with Sir James. He’s a TB specialist isn’t he?”

“He is, but he has specialised in some other areas, and I think he might be able to help you.” He refrained from mentioning that he had learnt about these specialties several years ago, not from Sir James, but at the hands (and not just the hands) of Lady Talbot. For a moment he was caught up in memories, then he wrenched his attention back to his wife.

“You really think he can help me?”

“I think he might, and I think it’s worth trying, don’t you?”

“If Sir James thinks he can help, then, yes, I will try it.”

And so it was arranged. After half-term, when the girls would be staying with them, they would both go to England.

Wracked by her feelings of guilt, Jo stayed in bed for much of half-term. The triplets and Richenda, who was staying at Freudesheim with them, accepted that Jo was ill, and couldn’t spend much time with them. Jack took the girls into Interlaken one day, which gave him time to keep his regular rendezvous with Annalise, and also to have an extempore encounter with Frau Génin before the girls arrived for their coffee and cakes. The following day Biddy Courvoisier took the girls out to Berne, for which she was richly repaid by Jack (and which turned out to be a more than passing reward).

With the plans all in place for the trip to England, Jack had plenty of work to do at the San in preparation. A few days before they were due to depart he was at his desk quite late, and was startled when there was a knock at his door.

“Come in.” he called, his attention still on the papers in front of him.

“Dr Maynard?”

“Yes, if you’d like to take a seat I’ll be with you in a moment.” He glanced up with a vague smile and gestured towards the comfortable sofa at one end of the room.

“You seduced my sister and left her pregnant! You … you … swine!”

She wrenched her arm from his grip as if it burned her, but could not deny that he had a reasonable point. “I am Alicia Davenham. My sister is Melissa Davenham.”

“Melissa Davenham.” Jack repeated, thoughtfully.

“Yes. My poor innocent sister.” Alicia paced angrily. “I’ve heard that you have a habit of seducing and abandoning women, so maybe you can’t remember her among the multitudes.”

“Actually I do remember.” Jack replied. “And may I assure you that while I might have a habit of seducing women, I most certainly do not abandon them. Your sister was quite happy to leave me when, and in the state, she did.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was the one who wanted the babies.” Jack told her, remembering how Melissa had told him that while she wanted children she did not want the tie of a husband, and that she was well off enough to bring them up herself without a man to bring home the money.

“I don’t believe … Melissa wouldn’t.” She faltered. Looking properly at the man in front of her for the first time, she suddenly saw why Melissa would pick this man to father her children. She shook her head to clear it. “Anyway, even if she did, you still abandoned her and the children!”

“Not at all. She is the one who has barred me from any paternal relations with them.” Although relations with Melissa when he was in England were most definitely not barred.

“Oh.” Alicia paused. “I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion. I’m going to have to talk to Melissa.” She turned to leave his office.

A moment later, she was back. “I can’t wait to talk to Melissa, first” she said, closing the door behind her. “Let me hear your explanation of what happened.”

“I thought I had explained.” Jack could think of far better ways to spend an evening than talking about what he’d done with Alicia’s sister.

“You only told me in outline. I’d like some details.” She insisted. And she was in fact so insistent that by the time she left his office although she didn’t know much more about Melissa, she had gone through all Jack’s details three times. He hadn’t had to talk much either.
