The boy walked down the stone corridors of the San. He could hear crying. The depressing olive green gave way to brighter colours. There was warmth here. There was a small room with large fearsome looking machines and some sort of ventilator, with a huge concertina like rubber attachment. There was a cot. A simple children's mobile hung above the cot. The walls were a warm yellow and there were some paintings of characters from Walt Disney, like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Apart from these and the cot and mobile, there was little to show it was a children's ward.

The boy looked into the cot. There was a red haired baby girl, lying listless and breathing with an unhealthy rasp. She had a high temperature. The boy stared at the poor baby in sympathy. Tears welled up in his eyes. The baby woke. She was in pain. She whined and wailed and held out her arms.

The boy scooped her up in her blankets. With so many babies in the family he was used to looking after them. He sung the baby a lullaby which his mother always sang when her babies were sick. The baby clutched at the boy. He lifted out a toy stuffed rabbit and cuddled the baby, singing different songs. The boys fear for the distressed child was great. He could not seem to help her! Was she going to die? He felt his own tears streaming down his cheeks. The poor baby! She started to cry, he started to cry!

The boy then saw the name attached to the cot. MARGOT MAYNARD. Stephen Maynard screamed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"NOOOOOOOO! MARGOT!!!"

A blood curdling scream made Jack and Joey leap out of their skins!

"MARGOT! MARGOT! MARGOT!"

Jack tore into his eldest son's room to find the boy drenched in tears and sweat.

"Stephen!" shouted Jack.

"Stephen! Snap out of it! It's only a nightmare! It's not real! Stephen!" Jack had to pour water over his son and give him a firm slap, before Stephen recovered his senses. Joey and Jack sat on Stephen's bed, their son between them whilst he calmed down and told them what he saw.

A sleepy Charles and Mike poked their heads round the door, they were quickly sent to bed by Joey, who checked on the small fry. Jack was horrified to hear Stephen give a detailed description of the room Margot was in when she was admitted to the San in Wales. A chill went down Jack's spine. He knew Steve had never ever seen that far inside the San, and Margot was admitted before he was born! So how come he knew? Fear gripped Jack inwardly and he prayed to God this would never happen again. Steve was terrified for his sister, there was only one remedy.

Jack went to Margot's room to retrieve something of hers to give to Steve that night. Anything, an article of clothing, a book, Emerence's clock! He took the valuable item and placed it on the mantelpiece.

"Now Steve! You know how much care Margot takes of that clock! Look at it! Think of her! Imagine you were looking after her as she does that clock!"

The ticking of the jewelled timepiece and the slow moving of the hands mesmerised the boy and he started to feel drowsy. Then Joey came back. Jack explained the presence of the clock. Joey had an idea. Half past nine! The prefects would be going to bed!

Joey rang up Hilda Annersley next door to say she needed to speak to Margot urgently. Margot was just settling down to sleep when Matey roused her.

"Is something wrong with Mamma?" She asked, worried. Where were Len and Con?

"No. it's Stephen, he's had some kind of nightmare fit. Your parents want you to speak to him. Just reassure him Margot. Keep it matter of fact and casual. Don't ask him a lot of questions."

Clamberig into her dressing gown and slippers, Margot made her way to the Head's study where Miss Annersley handed her the phone.

"Steve?"

"Margot, is that you?"

"Yes what's the matter?"

"Nightmare! Horrible nightmare! I dreamt I saw you as a baby when you were ill. Desperately ill and Mamma and Papa did not think you would live. It was so real! I was holding you and singing to you, but you were so ill! I could describe the room, what you were wearing..."

"Yes. Steve. It's all over now. Repeat after me. 'it was only a nightmare. and I am safe and well' can you do that?"

Margot was inwardly frightened at the experience her brother had just gone through.

"Yes. It was only a nightmare and Margot is safe and well."

"Good! Well done Steve! Now you are coming to watch the end of term tennis matches tomorrow aren't you? You did promise!"

"Yes Margot! I am coming to watch the tennis tomorrow."

"Good! Now no more nightmares! Goodnight!"

"Good night Margot. I do love you!"

"I love you too. Goodnight!"

Margot tried to keep the emotion from her voice. She would see Steve tomorrow. Matey gave her something to sleep and Jack sedated Steve at Freuedesheim. Peace and quiet reigned. The nightmare was over.

This is really good, Phil. Poor Stephen. How scared he must have been. No wonder Jack is concerned, too. How could Stephen know the details of the room?

Despite hot milk from Matey, Margot did not sleep well. One of her earliest memories was of her lying in her cot with lots of machines around her. There was only the stuffed rabbit for company. She would gurgle to the rabbit and stroke it. She then remembered someone, she always assumed it was Papa come in to lift her up and cuddle her. She remembered staring into her father's eyes! Her father's fair hair, so like Steve, so like Papa he was! He seemed younger, but then he was eighteen years ago. But this was a boy's face. Maybe it was David Russell? No, this was an older boy of about fifteen. Margot woke in the night! It was Steve! How in the name of Heaven and Earth could her brother aged fifteen be where he was those sixteen and a half years ago? She leapt out of bed to say her prayers fervently!

How often in her early girlhood had she dreamed of the boy who came to comfort her? How strange was it that afterwards, all she could remember in her baby years was that she was getting better! After the boy had come, she had turned the corner and survived! Had Stephen saved her life?

She lay back in her bed and thought of her troubled relationship with the Stephen. She was the youngest triplet, Mamma's first three. Then Steve came. He was a determined young man, but very placid. He instantly took a shine to Len, he was fond of Con, but he didn't really hav much time or her imaginary people, but then did anyone in the family? He preferred realistic events and stories! He tended to see himself as equal to Len and this annoyed Margot. The triplets were the oldest and should be obeyed! He resented her bossiness. She was not an easy sibling! For example, the brother most like her, Mike, was frequently at odds with her. Her scolding of him brought accusations of the 'pot calling the kettle black.'

Responsible Stephen was pushed to his limits by her bossiness. On one occasion he had dunked her in the pond at Plas Gwyn and on another, she and Steve had rolled on the floor fighting like cats before Auntie Madge of all people!

No, she was not an easy sister to get along with! She loved and cherished her family, but at the same time was jealous of her siblings and felt like fighting her corner for some time with Mamma and Papa. After this nightmare of Steve's she was thinking, "Does he really care about me after all I've done to him?"

She knew the answer to that!

Margot barely said a word as she led her tennis team out. Steve was still a little shaken by his experience. Joey sat him ina chair in the shade. Margot was terrible in the warm up practice and kept skying her balls. A sharp word from Miss Burnett soon set her straight! Steve watched his sister belt ball after ball into the oposition's court.

However, the dream disturbed both Maynards, and unbeknown to them, their father...

Jack spoke to an old friend from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

"Oh really Alan! you have ballooned in size!"

"Well Jack, all we do is sit down, listen to people and take notes and the Royal College serves up the best meals out of all the Royal Colleges in London! Delicious roast beef and the horseradish sauce!"

"Yes thank you Alan!"

Alan the psychiatrist was right. the Royal College of Psychiatrists canteen like a meal at the Savoy and a five star eating experience! Jack Maynard also knew if Alan was on the subject of food, he would never stop.

"What's the matter, Jack?"

Jack Maynard outlined the dream Stephen had and Margot's own dream about being rocked to sleep by a boy.

Alan ruminated, Alan wheezed, Alan groaned, Alan rumbled until Jack came to a halt.

"Jack my boy, do you know there is a good fifty percent of our brains we do not use? And there here been other cases of regressive dreams where people have to all appearances gone back in time before they were born?"

"But that's..."

"The Buddhists believe in reincarnation."

"I don't believe I'm hearing this!"

"Jack you musn't be ashamed! Regressive dreams do happen! There are recorded cases of reincarnation. it is highly possible that young Stephen had such a strong dream about Margot that he felt he was there and indeed he was! It sounds like a one off Jack; And the net result is, your Margot did survive and get better."

"I've been going barmy about this! I thought this didn't happen! I thought it ungodly! I thought they were ill!"

"Of course you did Jack! You are an excellent father and a wonderful clinician! From what I have seen of Stephen and Margot they are in perfect health. This is just a one off! Something unexplained! Move on from it Jack! Steve and Margot are unharmed!"

Jack started to calm down.

"I do know one cure for your own worries Jack!"

"What's that?"

"A nice three course dinner!"

Jack rolled his eyes in despair. Still, he did invite Alan round and would have to give him soemthing in return. Maybe Alan was right. Steve and Margot were in good health. Perhaps he should put it down to one of life's mysteries.
