#1: A Good Chalet School Girl (reposted) Author: Xanthe, Location: LondonPosted: Wed May 16, 2007 12:53 am I wrote and posted this in February 2006 but it vanished with the old board. As a couple of people have asked me about it, I thought I would repost it - not least because I thought it was really-truly lost & I have only just discovered a lurking copy of it myself...
I was a good Chalet School girl, and I played the game. I played all sorts of games, not that anyone ever saw. I was a good Chalet School girl, and I prayed to the God who never seemed to hear me when I asked… I was a good Chalet School girl and I worked hard, and I played hard. I was a good Chalet School girl and I had no problems to be solved by judicious application of tea and understanding.
I was a good Chalet School girl, and I still am now. My room is spotless and I never forget to say my prayers. I am a good Chalet School girl, with my fluent French and German, and my love of walking. When I see decorous ‘crocs’ trot past me as I wander through town I find myself looking, wondering how many other people play my games, appearing normal on the outside.
Even now, as I lie on my bed, in my painstakingly, achingly tidy room, empty packet of pills and empty bottle of whisky in the bin, my head going a little fuzzy as I listen to the sounds of people on their way to evensong, I am a good Chalet School girl, wondering if maybe, just maybe, I will be rescued by doctors…

Thanks.
#3: Author: wheelchairprincess, Location: Oxfordshire, UKPosted: Wed May 16, 2007 10:18 am Tough to read but could so easily be true. Who is it? Part of me wonders if it is Verity.
#4: Author: leahbelle, Location: KilmarnockPosted: Wed May 16, 2007 5:30 pm Hard hitting.
Thank you for reposting, Xanthe.
#5: Author: Tan, Location: London via Newcastle AustraliaPosted: Thu May 17, 2007 12:59 pm Wow. Very powerful and moving.
#6: Author: Bee, Location: Canberra, AustraliaPosted: Fri May 18, 2007 10:53 am This made me want to laugh and cry! Thanks Xanthe - it was a bit scary how realistic it seemed! (Realistic in terms of Chalet School, at least.)
Can I ask - did you have any one character in mind when writing it?
#7: Author: Ruth B, Location: Oxford, UKPosted: Fri May 18, 2007 10:54 am Thanks for reposting that Xanthe, very moving.

My idea was really that it could potentially have been an awful lot of people - I didn't really have someone specific in mind...
#10: Author: Gabrielle, Location: Near Paris, FrancePosted: Sat May 19, 2007 11:10 pm I'm really glad you reposted this Xanthe. I liked it the first time and looked for it when it disappeared. It still makes me tear up.
#11: Author: Nicola, Location: DerbyshirePosted: Mon May 21, 2007 8:03 am Glad you found it. I remember it from the first posting, but it's lost none of its power on rereading.
#12: Author: Rosie, Location: Land of Three-Quarters SkyPosted: Mon May 21, 2007 9:58 am What Nicola said.
#13: Author: Elle, Location: PeterboroughPosted: Tue May 29, 2007 11:42 pm That so made my blood run cold and sent shivers down my spine. I can imagin that happening, because so many of the girls would not have been equiped to face life outside of the narrow confines of the Chalet School.
