A little odd thing that came to me earlier - I rather hoped it might help Elle in her endeavours to have a whole drabble with no horrible deaths in, though it is only small and silly and not very violent.

- X -

Dr Jack Maynard sat alone in his office, musing over a piece of paper containing details of a complicated case that they were battling hard to win, but were rapidly losing. It was a small boy, brought to them almost in his death throes two weeks ago, and since then although they had managed to stop him deteriorating any further, things weren't improving, and he'd spent an uneasy night. His parents were far from rich, though they'd promised to pay whatever was needed to keep him alive, but Jack could have told them already that it was hopeless. All they were doing was throwing money at someone who, realistically, was already dead – at the same time, when he looked into their eyes he couldn't tell them that. He had to keep inventing new things to give them hope, to try and ease their son's pain.

It was interrupted by a short knock at the door, followed by the entrance of Dr David Fellows. This was a new recruit, a year younger than Jack, who had come to the San to start his specialisation in TB. Since he joined some six months ago, he had managed to upset Jack at every turn, from a bad introduction to the growing realisation among the community that he was certainly a rival in the quest to win Joey's affections. And, as Jack himself had to own, he was a serious one.

Dashingly good looking, with dark, curly hair and deep brown eyes which always held a twinkle, he was well built without being too muscular, and had something of the Victorian gentleman about him. It was all too easy to picture him stood in front a fireplace with one hand in his pocket, smoking a pipe and talking about politics to a large circle of acquaintances. More than that, he was always approachable and pleasant, with a joke to share; and, worst of all, he was well read. By pure chance he had studied Napoleon enthusiastically as an amateur, and he had first ingratiated himself with Joey when he mentioned this to her one afternoon while having tea at Die Rosen.

Every knew that Jack hated him, and many guessed that the feeling was mutual, even though he went out of his way to hide it under a friendly veneer. The most awkward person of all was Jem, who was a good friend to Jack but at the same time had to consider that not only was David a member of his staff, he was a potential suitor and as such had to be treated well until they learnt how Joey felt. Stuck firmly in the middle, he had tried to avoid the situation so far, though his own opinion, expressed candidly to Madge one evening, was that neither of them would get very far with a young Miss so determined not to marry!

Now together alone in the room, the two men eyed each other warily, but tried to discuss business. Professionally, Jack was determined to keep his temper, and would have been happy to end the meeting with no more than a sour hint of dislike creeping in, but David was another matter, and he saw his chance to taunt Jack as he had been wishing to do for so long, and didn't dare to in public when Jack was his superior.

“Sorry that I can't stay longer,” he said jovially, as he filed his notepad into his bag and turned around for the door. “Dr Russell has invited me for dinner so that I can get to know Joey better, and I daren't be late though I must of course get ready to look my best. Will you be there?”

“You know I won't,” growled Jack, who had seen David consulting the rota that morning in the staff room, and now understood why he had asked such a particular question about Jack doing the late shift. “Not that it matters. You don't stand a chance with Joey.”

“Well, that's rather up to the lady, isn't it.” He flashed a beaming smile in Jack's direction. “May the best man win and all that rot – though I assure you now that the best man will be me.”

It had been a long time since Jack lost his temper so badly, but at this moment something inside him snapped. Pushing David up against the wall by his throat, he tried to choke him as he jabbed a finger in the most painful place possible to a man's ribs. David visibly winced, but not as much as when Jack started to speak, in a dark, angry voice.

“You stand no chance,” he hissed. “I declared myself to Jem, my friend, long ago and he knows that I will treat Joey honourably and show her the love that she deserves. Joey knows so as well, and she knows me and my family. She's stayed with my sister during school holidays and been on picnics with me. We know each other, and you're just a stranger who she won't even remember in another six months.”

“Why so insecure then?” laughed David, struggling to loosen Jack's arm where it held him. “Know that if she saw you like this she'd never look at you again?”

This was too much, and Jack lost what little self-control he had. Hitting indiscriminately, he managed to wind David, then brought his knee up and listened with some satisfaction to the agonised groan which emerged. He was just contemplating if more damage needed to be done when the door swung open to admit a familiar figure.

“What on earth is going on?” demanded Jem, staring in astonishment at the rumpled, doubled over figure and Jack, who smiled smoothly.

“Nothing at all. Oh, would you mind if I finished early tonight? I've heard that there's to be a dinner party, and I'd hate to let the side down.”

“I'm sure it won't matter for once,” smiled Jem after a moment's thought. He looked again at David, then said, “If that was all, I hoped to talk to you privately about a case.”

Taking the strong hint, David straightened with another high-pitched whine, then grabbed his bag and hobbled away, darting a furious look back at Jack, who was already sat behind his desk again. Much of Jem's admonitions about appropriate behaviour and not giving David the satisfaction went straight over his head, as he smirked to himself. He would win Joey whatever it took, he vowed that; at least, he would make sure that she didn't end up with David. After that it was anybody's guess, for she wasn't famed for talking about the day she could achieve everlasting happiness by getting married. All the same, he'd see off any potential problems, whatever it took to do so.

This title is very misleading! I was expecting Jack to ambush David on his way to dinner and roll him off the edge of the Sonnalpe. Must have been reading too many of Elle's drabbles.

Thanks, Ariel. :)

Oh my goodness! I began this thinking it was set on the Gornetz Platz and that David was bent on seducing a married woman! Thank heaven I was wrong. These eyes that have never needed reading glasses (on account of being shortsighted so I have varifocals now) need a good seeing-to!

My money's on Jack. :D

 Well, that's one way of dealing with a rival!

Thanks Ariel. That made me laugh. Though why I should laugh at such violence is beyond me. Maybe it's something to do with the varifocals that I obviously share with sealpuppy.
