Post subject:  The Error of Her Ways, or An Apology to Abi

It has been brought to my attention that many users wish me to apologise to Abi for a recent furore involving her magic hat. Thus, it is with deep sincerity (and an even deeper hope that I don't malign anyone else during the course of this writing, for this was never my intention) that I proffer this humble apology in the hope of forgiveness.

- X -

The trouble had all started one day when Abi unwisely bought a hat during a half-term trip to Interlaken and decided to show it off to the rest of her form in the common room that evening. It was a marvellous hat, black and yellow, with the interior made of the sort of material that seemed to shimmer all colours of the rainbow at once. The rest stared at it in awe, watching as she perched it precariously on her head and then spun around to show it off.

“That must have cost a fortune!” exclaimed Nightwing, who was massaging her knees in the corner. “Where did you get it?”

“Do you remember that dinky little shop just off the market?” asked Abi, tilting it slightly to one side and trying to find something in which to admire the general effect, though mirrors were conspicuous by their absence at the Chalet School, where the girls were never vain.

“You shouldn't have gone in there,” said abbeybufo strictly. She led them all by the nose, and was often called The Mod because of it. Currently she was sitting on the arm of a chair, waiting for Mary-Lou to arrive so that she could ask for some advice.

Unluckily, ChubbyMonkey entered into their midst unexpectedly, and, catching the last part of abbeybufo's speech she demanded to know what was going on. Recently, she had been demoted from her position as sub-prefect then re-adorned with the laurels a great deal, and this time she was determined to do a good job so that Miss Annersley should have no occasion to demote her again – it was starting to get embarrassing.

They could see by her face that she meant to have the whole story, and so falteringly they told her of Abi's fantastic hat, finishing on the doubtful question of whether she would report them, which could mean big trouble. She promised them that she wouldn't, but that she would have to confiscate the hat – she stared at it rather longingly at this stage – at which many of the Middles looked mutinous, though they didn't dare argue.

That had been the start of the trouble. It had all ended in Miss Annersley's study, where she had had one of her long talks with ChubbyMonkey and had impressed upon her that a sub-prefect was in just as much a position of responsibility as a full prefect and that she had to try harder in the future. She was told that she wouldn't be demoted again (they were all getting sick of trying to remember if she was a sub-prefect or not) but that she was no longer to be trusted and must be watched closely. Further, she was to have Civics with Miss Annersley every other evening for a full month, which it was to be hoped would remind her not to abuse her position of power again.

Lastly, she was to apologise to all of the Middles whom she had upset; though they were also going to be given a lecture on not going into other people's dormitories and cubicles without permission with the intention of regaining certain items of property or otherwise, and especially to Abi, who had been promised her hat back as long as she took it home at the end of term and it wasn't ever seen on school grounds again. Ariel, like any 'bad' Chalet School girl, hated to apologise, but she knew that she must, and so she went to find Abi, who was in the cloakroom getting ready for a walk.

“I'm sorry,” she mumbled, once abbeybufo had made all of the other Middles leave, in a display of tact, even hauling Elle out by her arm, though she muttered something about wanting to see the fireworks. “I promise that I won't steal your things again.”

Then she waited nervously to see if Abi would forgive her.

Go on, Abi - surely you can forgive her?

Abi stared at ChubbyMonkey for a moment, all of what had passed during the last few days flickering through her mind - the way the hat had called to her when she first saw it. The love that had instantly sprung to her heart as she took it into her hands for the first time. The terrible, tearing pain she had known as it was wrenched from her desperate grasp. The tears she had shed in the black corners where no-one could see.

And it was ChubbyMonkey, standing apologetically in front of her, who had caused this needless misery. But the hat was clasped once more between her fingers, its gentle warmth spreading through her, and she knew that it was speaking to her. She lifted her eyes and met ChubbyMonkey's.

"It's ok," she said. "I understand why you wanted the hat - its lure calls to all who meet it. I know you didn't mean to hurt me and I'm just glad to have it back. In other words, I forgive you fully and freely."

A huge grin spread over her face, to be reflected in ChubbyMonkey's.

"Excellent!" said the latter. "Let's go for a walk and try to find Nightwing - I hear she's lost."

And ChubbyMonkey was forever to grateful to Abi for her so unquestioning forgiveness, and for not mentioning the fact she had clearly been crying during Miss Annersley's talk.

Well, Nightwing is still lost, so it may be a long search!

I'm glad that peace and amity are restored, and that Abi can enjoy the hat once more (if only at home).

Very funny - and, I know this wasn't particularly the point, but very nicely written too. :)
