"Mary-Lou! Gosh, I nearly didn't recognise you; you're so brown!" Thus Vi Lucy greeted one of her oldest friends at the door of the flat she now occupied. Mary-Lou laughed.

"Verity said exactly the same thing, although she was rather more rude about it - but you can't worry about a little thing like that when you're on a dig, you know. It's enough to have my hair out of my eyes and a bath whenever I can find one-"

"I believe you! Suppose you come in to natter, rather than doing it on the doorstep?"

"Well! I like that!" But Mary-Lou went in gladly, eager to see the place that Vi had already made her own. It was sparsely furnished, but very pretty all the same, and it suited her artistic friend wonderfully. She said so, and Vi smiled.

"Mum and Dad said things, when I moved out of Ju's place - but really, I'm not in any hurry to marry, but I still wanted a home to call my own. I'm making enough to afford the rent, so I'm not really sure what they were fussing about." The next look she gave her friend was a sly one. "And you? No marriage on the cards?"

"Not in the slightest," Mary-Lou replied immediately, but Vi's quick eye noticed that her cheeks were slightly pinker than usual, and after a moment she said, "Well - you remember that singer I wrote to you about? He - asked me, actually. I said no," she added quickly, "but he told me that it was 'sweet' that British girls were so shy!"

"Shy?" Vi repeated, amused. Of all the words in the world to describe her friend, 'shy' was one which had never applied.

"Oh, don't give me that look! I know as well as you do that I'm about as shy as a- a steamroller! But when I tried to explain that the facts of the matter were I didn't want to marry anyone, he said he'd write me a song - as if that was going to change my mind!" She shook her head, and Vi smiled again, this time sympathetically.

"Well, he's not here now - why don't you tell me about the dig? And I'll give you the latest news about Barbara." Mary-Lou's eyebrows rose, and she eagerly demanded more information; and, thus distracted, the two old friends settled in for a good gossip, only stopping when Vi produced tea and a packet of store-bought biscuits.

The two girls fell into a companionable silence as they munched their biscuits, and Vi suddenly noticed that - not for the first time - her neighbour had his wireless on loud enough that she could make out what he was listening to through the walls. She didn't recognise the song at all - something new, then, and decidedly American rock'n'roll.

"That - thoughtless - spineless - Yankee - turtle!" Mary-Lou suddenly spluttered.

"Mary-Lou? What-" Vi began, but Mary-Lou interrupted her.

"Listen!" she hissed.

Vi listened. It was the song, she realised, that was upsetting her friend so much. Mary-Lou's cheeks were growing redder, and sparks were practically coming out of her eyes. "Sorry, Vi," she gasped. "But I can't possibly let him think that this was OK - that it was romantic - that I'd actually..." she trailed off, her anger making further speech impossible. "We'll catch up again later!" she exclaimed, and then was gone, the front door slamming shut behind her.

Vi stayed where she was, sipping her tea. Mary-Lou's poor singer! He probably did think that it was romantic, and was going to be heart-broken when Mary-Lou was finished with him. Actually, heart-broken would be the very least he would be, judging by Mary-Lou's righteous indignation. What Vi wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall when that interview took place!

Her neighbour's wireless continued to blast the lyrics that had upset her friend so much.

Hello Mary-Lou, good-bye heart
Sweet Mary-Lou I'm so in love with you
I knew, Mary-Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary-Lou, good-bye heart

Vi grinned. He was about to find out just how sweet Mary-Lou really was.

Eeek!

Thankyou - poor singer. Fancy thinking you could win OOAO over with a song. You have to save her life at least once first!

I remember that song coming up frequently at the barn dances that happened when I was at middle school - at the time I definitely associated it with OOAO, that being the only other place I'd encountered the name!

Loving this. Please let us see OOAO demolish singer!

Reminds me of when I was at school and the song 'Oh, Carol, I am but a fool...' was in the charts. Idiots used to start singing it as soon as I walked in the sixth form common room. Used to drive me mad!

So I have an added reason for wanting OOAO to get revenge on my behalf!

In my head too, which is good because it's displaced We Three Kings, which has been there for a fortnight!

Thanks, Nightwing. I enjoyed the song but I'm annoyed on Mary-Lou's behalf. I wish we could have found out Barbara's news.

Oh that was fun :) It's also the only other place I've seen the name - I did know a girl called Mary-Lou/Louise, but she pronounced it "marry" rather than "Mary". Can't wait to see what ML does!
