Skeleton in the Closet

Part 1

It was raining as Joey, Jack, the triplets, Ricki Fry and Emerence Hope walked up the garden path to number 13 Mys Tree Lane, their temporary home for the long half term holiday.

Jack had been called out quite suddenly to a special medical conference in England and the generous invitation had included air tickets for his family and half-term guests, as his hosts were so keen for him to do a presentation on the latest TB research. Anna stayed in Switzerland to look after the babies and the boys were all at school.

Welcomed at the airport by typical English weather, Joey and the girls were not feeling very optimistic about their holiday. The conference was being held in a remote small town, where there was not likely to be much to do.

The house was old and creaky, balancing right on the edge of the town down a long, winding lane. The atmosphere was rather spooky as they all entered the house. Sensitive Con had the feeling someone was watching her as she walked through the front door and into a large sitting room with old, comfy furniture, wooden tables and an eerie alcove to the side.

Margot and Emerence immediately started to explore the house, looking inside doors and cupboards, while Jack helped Joey carried food supplies through to the kitchen. Len and Ricki decided to go and choose a bedroom while the others were busy.

Con looked around thoughtfully, taking in the aura of the place, until Joey popped her head round the kitchen door. “Come and have a look at this! It’s a message left out for us. I’ve no idea who it could be from though – not the letting agent, that’s for sure!” Con took the message from her mother. It was on old yellowing paper in a queer italic script and said, simply: “Every house has a skeleton in its closet”.

Suddenly there was a bang followed by loud shrieks from Emerence and Margot.

Part 2

Len and Ricki rushed back downstairs, bursting into the sitting room just as Jack emerged sheepishly from the kitchen. “Sorry girls, it’s alright. That was me – I think I blew a fuse when I switched that light on. Hope I didn’t scare you too much. I’d better look for the fuse box or we’ll be in the dark tonight.”

“You nearly made me jump out of my skin! Trust you Jack! Look, you’ve frightened Emerence she’s gone all white!” added Joey.

Emerence had indeed gone rather pale. “I’m alright really, it wasn’t the bang - come and see what Margot and I just found!”

“Talk about making an entrance!” said Margot.

Emerence and Margot were standing next to the door of what was obviously a walk-in cupboard. The others all went and crowded round the open door. A chorus of exclamations arose. “That must be what the message was about,” said Con.

Sitting in the cupboard was an off-white, rather thin skeleton, who was grinning back at them, as though amused at the fright they had just had.

“Where on earth did he come from?!” exclaimed Len.

“She, I think you’ll find,” replied Jack, “This house is often rented by doctors visiting the local medical conferences. I expect someone brought her along for a demonstration and forgot to take her home.”

“She isn’t real then?” queried Emerence disappointedly.

“I’m not honestly sure” pondered Jack thoughtfully. “Research doctors do use real ones you know, but it’s far more likely to be a model.”

“What shall we call her”, said Ricki, practically. “At least she won’t need feeding Mrs Maynard!”

“Call her Matilda, after “Waltzing Matilda”. She was found by Emerence and she’s Australian after all,” suggested Con, saying, as usual, the first thing that came into her head.

“The skeleton almost certainly isn’t,” said Len reasonably, “Although she does look like a Matilda somehow.”

“Matilda she is then,” said Joey smiling. “Now what can we call her for short…?” Margot rolled her eyes at Emerence.

Matilda grinned back at them all.

Part 3

By nightfall, Jack still hadn’t located the fuse box, so they had to manage with candles. Luckily Len had discovered a large supply of them stacked in boxes in the dining-room.

They were all tired after their long journey from Switzerland and when Joey suggested an early night for the girls they readily agreed.

The staircase, which was just outside the sitting-room door, led up to a longish landing that had two bathrooms opposite the stairs. A door on the right led into the largest bedroom, which Len, Ricki and Con had decided to share. Another, smaller bedroom was reached by a connecting door. As it could only be reached by going through the first bedroom, Margot and Emerence would sleep there.

“Not much chance of you two creeping off for a midnight feast then!” was Joey’s verdict.

On the other side of the stairs the landing veered off to the left. It seemed like the landing curved, although really it was just a corner. Two doors here led to the entrances of the other two bedrooms. One must have been a nursery or dressing-room originally, as they too had connecting doors, although unlike the other two bedrooms, they could both be reached from the landing.

A short time after the girls went to bed Joey and Jack crept up to their own bedroom. Before going upstairs, Joey took a quick look around the sitting-room to check no candles had been left alight downstairs. The half-open door of Matilda’s cupboard caught her eye, and she smiled to herself – maybe this holiday would not be as uneventful as she’d first thought. She followed Jack upstairs, leaving the sitting-room door wide open as usual (Madge hated such scattiness, so Joey had always enjoyed rebelling in this little way).

Matilda waited until she could no longer hear people moving around upstairs. Then she climbed slowly out of her cupboard, creaking gently. It was nice to stretch her arms and legs after being cramped in the cupboard all afternoon.

“Gosh,” she thought, as she strolled cautiously around the room, “I really need to do something about this creaking. It makes me feel so old. What I need is some oil, but no-one who stays here ever brings any.”

Matilda tried to make as little sound as possible as she moved around. Hopefully if anyone heard her they would just think it was the house itself making the noise, as it was, after all, rather old.

Feeling a little more comfortable, Matilda wondered what to do next. She thought she may as well go and have a look in the kitchen and see what the visitors had brought with them. Probably nothing very interesting. But there wasn’t much else for a skeleton to do at this time of night.

The night was an especially quiet one and Matilda knew she had to be very careful not to creak too loudly and wake up the visitors. Slowly she moved towards the kitchen, concentrating on her movements, which sounded very loud to her.

In fact it almost seemed as if the creaks were getting louder, the closer she got to the kitchen. Matilda stopped for a moment and listened. There was silence. Then Matilda stepped cautiously forward once more, emitting a creak about twice as loud as her previous step. A creak that sounded suspiciously like that dodgy floorboard at the bottom of the stairs…

Matilda spun round quickly and was horrified to find herself looking at a figure standing in the doorway who was staring right back at her. Matilda gasped in shock.

I like Matilda - as creepy as she is, she comes across as rather nice, too.

Thankyou.

Reading this in a dark room probably wasn't the best thing to do. What could have scared a skeleton?

Part 4

Matilda and the figure stood frozen in a tableau. Then the figure took a step forward, and the floorboards creaked loudly an ominously beneath her. If Matilda had breath she would have held it. Another step brought the figure into a beam of moonlight shining through a gap in the sitting-room curtains. Matilda realised the figure was one of the girl visitors.

Matilda was surprised. Standing only a few feet away, the girl must have seen her but there was no ear splitting scream like that emitted form those two girls earlier. Matilda hated being shrieked at – she was only a skeleton after all, not a poltergeist, and those screams went right through her…

This girl didn’t seem in the least frightened – or even interested. The lack of response was confusing and a bit disappointing, in a way.

Matilda was startled back to reality by the realisation the steadily moving girl was coming very close to her. Matilda quickly stepped out of the way and continued to watch the girl, puzzled.

The girl walked slowly into the kitchen and started rooting around amongst the supplies the visitors had brought with them.

As that was what Matilda had intended doing she followed the girl into the kitchen and sat on a convenient kitchen surface to watch her. No longer worried about being heard (all noise would be blamed on this girl) Matilda swung her legs happily as she watched the girl unload various items and lay them out on the large kitchen table in a neat row. The last item to be unloaded turned out to be a large bottle of olive oil.

Matilda was delighted! That was just what she needed! The girl now turned and made her way out of the kitchen, not looking at Matilda once.

Matilda forgot her puzzlement at the girl’s behaviour in her joy at seeing the oil. She set about the business of trying to get the lid off the bottle.
