Post subject:  Reg's confession

I loved you from the moment I saw you. i still remember how you beautiful you looked as I saw you appear on the horizon, the sun shining on your hair, the jaunty skip in your step. You looked so alive. When you come near I saw how perfect your features were. I watched you all those days moving about and helping all of them. Oh I longed to help you. They all seemed to take advantage of you. You were a child yourself but they expected you to take care of babies and run about doing odd jobs.
Next to my Miss , I loved you.
And then I was taken to study. I could see you sometime when I visited your father.
I want to marry you. But it cannot be.
It has to be Len. You understand, don't you?
It was Dr Jack who helped me and made me study medicine and guided me. He expects me to marry Len. I like her but it is not the same. I cannot talk about it now. She is still very young. Dr Jack keeps hinting . He talks about how he had made up his mind about marrying Mrs Maynard when she was only 14 years old. Len is also 14 years now.
I cannot say no.
You understand don't you? Please do not look at me like that. I cannot bear it.

Sybil looked at Reg with contempt and with a toss of her pretty head, went away.

I always felt that Reg would have fallen in love with Sybil and not Len who was just a small kid when he knew her.
Had this idea few days ago. Not very sure about ages when Sybil left for Australia.

Patmac's village boy series showed Sybil and Reg doing things together and having a shared interest in Phobe Peters.

Definately an idea woth developing - maybe Sybil had to go to Australia because she was getting too fond of Reg in Madge's eyes.

A great start (note my unsubtle hint for more)... Sybs may be happily married by the end but you could write us a delicious drabble about an almost unspoken romance between the two of them which ends with great heartache....

Please? It would be lovely to read about a real Reg, a Reg who is properly in love with someone who loves him back. Pretty please? I'm not a fan of Reg but this I would love to read.

On popular demand (If requests from 4 persons can be called popular) here is more.Hope I will be able to complete it.

Sybil was shocked. She had not expected Reg to speak like this. She had never thought of Reg in that way. As long as she could remember him, he was a boy who admired Phoebe. Later when Uncle Jack had decided to help him, she was happy that he had an opportunity. But she had never thought of him. They would come across each other. But they had never played together or rarely talked. She had seen him with Uncle Jack discussing many things or even helping Auntie Jo in the house at times.
What could she do now? He was supposed to marry Len but if he…….No This was not correct. She wondered what to do. To whom could she talk? Auntie Jo or Uncle Jack was out of question. She could not even go to Auntie Hilda or Auntie Nell. Auntie Rosalie would also fail to understand. She would say that She Sybil had encouraged Reg.
She wished her mother was here. At times like these she really missed her mother. She was so far. It was not even possible to call her on telephone.
Sybil walked around the Platz with a worried frown on her pretty face. ”Sybs. Hey Sybs.” hailed a lovely voice. She turned and was dismayed to see her Auntie Jo.
“What’s the matter?” Jo asked noticing the look which immediately disappeared. Something was the matter.
“No. Nothing.” Replied Sybil hastily.
But Jo had not been a Head girl for nothing. She knew there was some problem. “What is it dear. Tell me .I can help you” she said in her golden voice
“No .No one can help me.”
“Nonsense. Try me.”
“But you will hate me”
“No. I will not.”

Hmmm, I wonder. Jo might be the one to speak to - but she is also the mother of the girl Reg is supposed to marry. And she has always seen the worst in Sybil...

Jo was shocked. But she controlled her feeling. A sense of resentment against Sybil arose in her heart which she frantically crushed. The first thing was to console Sybil.
“Come” she said. “Let us sit down here on this stone.” She put her arm around the slim shoulders. ”Do you love him?”, she asked “No” sobbed Sybil.
“Then why are you crying?” demanded Jo “I hope you did not encourage him” “No. I did not say anything. What can I do Auntie Jo? Please do not hate me. It was not my fault”
Jo’s heart melted at the pitiful voice and enfolded her and said “Leave everything to me. I guess you cannot face him now. I will see what to do”
“Now listen to me…….” Jo whispered in Sybil’s ear. Sybil looked startled and then slowly relaxed. What Auntie was saying, was correct.
She nodded her head and went with Jo to wash her face and lie down.

She walked briskly to the study and booked a call to Australia. It was urgent. Sybil’s news meant immediate action was needed. She had consoled Sybil and pointed to her how unacceptable such union will be.
She was not going to let Sybil spoil Len’s happiness. She could not tell this to Jack. He had planned and worked so much for this.
Though she was sure that Sybil was innocent and had no such feelings towards Reg. But steps had to be taken to see that there would be no further contact between the two.
The result was that Madge wrote to Hilda and Jossette and Sybil soon left for Australia.

Jossette was shocked. The Head had called and told her that they would leave for Australia. She could not understand why it was so urgent. Her education was not complete and she would miss going to Welsen.
It was so unfair. She wondered what was wrong. Why did not her mother write to her directly? It was on times like this that she hated the fact that she was in a school started by her mother. She, her mother had to write to the Head frequently and thus found it easy to write messages in it.
She went to Sybil to talk. Sybil seemed serious these days and spent days embroidering without speaking to anyone. The only person she spoke to was Mrs. Peters. She was spending the last few days with the Peters.
She sighed and continued with her thoughts. She should take a walk around and try to collect all memories of this place. She love it so and she would be leaving it now.
She must collect addresses of all her friends.
She wondered how the school in Australia would be. She started to feel excited about the whole thing.
It would be an adventure and she would spend some time with her mother after so many years. She now understood how Peggy and Bride must have felt.

Post subject:  Re: Reg's confession

Phoebe Peters was shocked. She recalled the young Reg who adored her. She had been happy to see him follow his dreams. But this was too much. She looked at Sybil who was sitting by the window looking at the beautiful embroidery made by Phoebe. The sunlight shone on her red hair making it glow. She remembered the first time Sybil had sat like this, ages ago, when she had first met Jo and Jo has rescued her cello. It was Phoebe who had inspired Sybil to take embroidery.
Sybil who adored everything beautiful, loved the idea. Now everyone would admire her beautiful things and not her beauty and no one would say that she was proud of her beauty.
She used to visit Phoebe whenever she got time and learned from her simple stitches. To her surprise, she found it easy to pick up. It was very soothing to sit and sew.
Despite difference in their ages, a warm friendship had sprung up between the two. In fact, if Sybil had not met Jo, she would have gone to Phoebe. But now it was too late.
“I do not know what to do.” she said.
“Do you love him?” asked Phoebe
“No”
“But what?”
“I have never been loved like this before. There was such an anguish in his eyes. They will haunt me. I do not understand why I feel so. But I liked it when he said .. what he felt about me.”
“I can understand. You know, when I was admitted in the hospital and Dr Peters took care of me, your Auntie Jo and her friends told me that he loved me. Then I became aware of my feelings. I never thought anyone would love me.”
“But it is wrong. If I say yes, it will hurt Len and Auntie Jo and Uncle Jack. And Reg will also feel guilty all his life. I cannot let all of them suffer. Josette is suffering from my mistake till now”
“You better forget that. I have heard that story and I will say emphatically that it was not your fault. You were a child at that time. You have suffered enough for that.” Phoebe interrupted.
There was a silence as Sybil bent her head on the beautiful colors on her lap. Phoebe sat silently looking at her. Much as she loved Jo she wanted to shake her vigorously now. Her buttering in was having a wrong effect. Had she not taken a decision to send away Sybil, the storm would have died naturally. Sybil was a sensible person. Her heart was not yet engaged.
Phoebe knew how to manage Reg. He had adored Phoebe from childhood and she had helped him a lot during his schooling. Even when they had come here in Switzerland, she and her husband had lent a hand. It would have been easy to point out how unsuitable it would be to marry Sybil.
“Thanks. I feel better now. I wish I had not met Auntie Jo. Everything would have been fine.”
“I am glad, I helped. Did you see the new material I purchased?”
And the talk turned to other things and the pinched look on Sybil’s face disappeared..
****************************************************
Reg was shocked. He had never meant to confess to Sybil about his love. He knew years ago that Dr Jack and Mrs. Jo meant him to marry Len. He liked Len. But he could not forget the image of Sybil from his mind. She was like a goddess, so high above him almost unattainable.
As a youngster, he would imagine himself saving her from dragons and monsters. In real life he had helped and rescued Len. So in a way, he loved Len too.
He sighed and looked at the photo on his table. It was a beautiful photo of the Triplets and Sybil sitting on grass on a sunny day. It had been taken when he had first met the family.
“Dr. Reg, here are the notes which you wanted. Papa gave them to me. “
Reg turned around to see Len standing at the door with a high color in her cheeks. He swiftly put down the photo and took the notes from her trembling hands. “Thanks”, he said “Wont you come in?”
“No. I have to give a parcel to a patient in the hospital. It came to our house by mistake.”
“Give it to me. I have to go to the hospital now. I will take it with me.”
Reg closed his room and left after saying goodbye.
****************************************************
Len was shocked She was glad that Reg had left. Suddenly she felt awkward with Reg. She had been able to see the photo at which he was staring. She blushed. Her heart was beating rapidly. She put her hands on her cheeks to cool them. Her mother had been hinting at it but she had never believed it. She was not grown up. But now she could never face him with the same ease as before. Everything had changed.
She could not meet anyone like this. She had to have time to cool down. She rapidly walked to wards the chapel and entered its cool interior. She sat down and composed herself.
The atmosphere was peaceful and slowly she became normal and soon went home.

Joey actually did quite well there - considering it was the man who was semi-engaged to her eldest daughter she suppresed her initial feelings and tried to think of a solution that would help all. Madge calling and insisting on her two eldest girls accompanying her to Australia is seen in a different light.

I'm so glad that Sybil genuinely doesn't seem to be romantically interested in Reg, because it sounds as if she'd feel obliged to get out of Len's way even if she did like him. & how sad that she never thought anyone'd love her, but it's not surprising after she was made to feel so guilty after Josette's accident.

Post subject:  Re: Reg's confession

Reg was wondering what to do. He could not concentrate on his work. Sybil’s lovely face continued to haunt him. His encounter with Len had also disturbed him. He wanted to talk about his feelings with someone. He looked at the photo for inspiration. He recalled the time it was taken. Miss Phoebe, he still thought of her as Miss Phoebe, would help him. She would understand and tell him what to do.
He went to her house and sat at her feet as he used to do years ago. “Help me “, he said.
“You have to decide whether to follow your heart or your head. You had made this decision once.”
He remembered. It was when Dr Jack had offered him to give him education and fulfill his dream of becoming a Doctor. He was needed at home and his going away would mean hardship for his family. But they all had agreed and he had let his heart rule his head.
Now it was opposite.” I am grateful to Dr Jack for giving me an opportunity to become a Doctor. He helped me all through out my career. I would do anything for him. Even if it means marrying his daughter.”
“If that is the reason why you are marrying Len, I will ask you not to do it. You are insulting her. Marry her if you have any feeling for her. Do not marry her out of a feeling of gratitude. She will not like it. Nor will Dr Jack. At least be honest.” scolded Phoebe.
“I’m sorry. I did not mean it that way .I like Len, admire her she is adorable. I want to protect her, but Sybil ……….”
“Now do not think of Sybil. If you have decided, stand by your decision. You will not regret it.”
“Thanks Miss Phoebe. I have decided. I will let my head rule my heart.”

I've always said that that passage of EBD's in which we're told that Reg likes all the triplets but Len's his favourite reminds me of Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice feeling obliged to marry one of the Bennet girls and just trying to decide which one! If Reg thinks that Jack and Jo want him to marry Len then I can see why he'd feel obliged to do what they want, but it's very unfair on poor Len.

After 10 years
Excerpts from Sybil's letter to Betsy Lucy
.................. Do you know who I met yesterday? It was Reg. Reg you know who was engaged to Len. They broke it up, he told me. He came here to seek me. It was a shock. he has changed so much.
Do you know , he had said once that he loved me? I am glad now that Auntie Joey had interfered and sent me here. Otherwise I would not have met my dearest husband.
He told me about Len. I was happy for her. She deserves happiness. She was such a motherly and elderly person as a child. Taking care of her sisters and other siblings and her mother. In addition she had to be good in everything because she was her mother's daughter.
She is now the youngest in the family. Her husband is 25 years older than her. Even her step children are older than her. They all pet her and see that she has no responsibilities.
She is allowed to pursue her studies and teaches in local school. They all adore her.
Reg said there was a big problem when those two broke the engagement. Uncle Jack was very keen on the marriage. They all were pressurizing Len and it was during that time her Professor helped her and supported her.His name if you please is Prof. Bhaer. No not Fritz. That would have been too much.
Reg is now happy. He is settling in Australia and will join the Flying Doctors team.

Try as I might, I cannot like Reg. Hence th edelay in completing the drabble.Sorry
