… Dr. Graves rose again.

“I understand that there is still one more prize to be given,” he began. “Many years ago, Mrs. Maynard,” he turned and bowed to Joey, who gave him a wide grin, “established what is known as the Josephine Maynard Prize, which is given to the girl who most fulfils the ideal the pupils of the Chalet School always have held before them. I understand that it began as The Margot Venables Prize, but the girls themselves have insisted that the name of the donor be given to it.

“It is not by any means awarded every year, but this year it has gone to one girl for whom everyone concerned, Staff, prefects and Mrs. Maynard herself, voted with one accord! I will now call on that girl to come and receive from Mrs. Maynard herself the prize she has so richly deserved.”

He paused before speaking the name, and Prudence, who had contrived to behave like a Christian being all these past weeks, suddenly forgot herself and forestalled him.

“Mary-Lou Trelawney!” she shrieked. “Well done, Mary-Lou!”

“ME?” Mary-Lou gasped, going first white and then red. “But it couldn’t possibly be me!”

- Coming of Age of the Chalet School

Prudence Dawbarn’s career at the Chalet School has been an eventful one. She and her twin had kept the authorities on constant tenterhooks with their various alarms and excursions through the years.

This however was the high point. Despite behaving very well … for her… all throughout the coming-of-age sale, she decided to open her big mouth and forestalled Dr Graves.

“Ummm… no,” stammered Dr Graves. “It’s not Mary-Lou.”

Prudence was bright red. Dr Graves was in a quandry. The rest of the school was stunned. Mary-Lou kept silent deciding whether to throw a tantrum or wait to see if the real winner could be bribed. It was slightly unfortunate therefore that Joey was less circumspect.

“WHO!!” she shrieked. “WHO … HAS … WON?”

Dr Graves took a step back from the wrath on her face. He caught a glimpse of the fear in Jack Maynard’s eyes and finally understood how it was he ended up with 11 children after only wanting one.

He held the envelope in trembling fingers and took a deep breath. “Be a man,” he thought. “Grow a pair.”

“The winner,” he said. “Is…”

:D :D :D Unlike Joey, some of us have 'issues' when screaming with laughter! Might need a 'cross your legs' warning if this goes on!

But if they all voted for the same person then Joey must have voted for them and know who it is!!!!

If we assume that Mary-Lou didn't vote for herself, Dr. Graves was taking a bit artistic license there (in the original where Mary-Lou DID win).

Maybe she did vote for herself? After all if she logically and honestly thought that she was the best person for the job, then being ML she would do so (although her reaction suggests that she didn't). After all, it wouldn't be cheek ...

“Phyllis Amberley,” Dr Graves concluded.

Who? was on the mind of everyone present.

Even Phyllis wondered who she was.

Joey gasped. Then her eyes narrowed as she looked over the ranks of the girls. They rested on Phyllis and she glared.

Somehow Phyllis stumbled onto the stage to the scattered applause of some girls who would clap at anything. Similar to those who thought the Nativity plays were touching.

Suddenly Joey leaped to her feet. “No!” she screamed. “Not possible!” She started storming all over the stage like a demon demented and reached out to strangle Phyllis who stumbled backwards.

Fortunately Miss Annersley grabbed her in time. “Joey,” she whispered frantically. “Control yourself! She’s a child.”

Joey gulped. “But it’s my prize,” she whimpered. “I choose the winner.

Dr Graves decided to be the man. “Phyllis congratulations!,” he said handing over the prize. “Take it and run,” he added in a whisper.

The rest of the girls surged around to congratulate and her and to Mary-Lou’s credit she dug deep, found her better self, hugged Phyllis and didn’t rip the cheque out of her hands. Meanwhile Joey was still sitting stunned on stage mouthing the word “recount” “recount” over and over.

So how did Phyllis win? Well quite simple really.

Mary-Lou voted for her. For fun.

And the school was so used to doing what OAO did that they did to. Subconsciously. While they wanted to write down Mary-Lou they wrote down Phyllis instead.

Is that believeable?

Well, I dunno, reader.

Is it believable that two girls would find out they were related simply because their names were similar?

Is it believable that out of the thousands of streets in all the cities in all the world a girl would be able to pick out the godmother she has never met before? And finally is it possible that Miss Annersley really doesn’t need glasses?

In that context may I humbly suggest that allowing dear sweet little Phyllis who is never heard of again throughout the entire series, is not completely out of the realm of possibility.
