Madge looked up eagerly as Dr Peters entered the sitting room wiping his hands with a napkin.” What …?” “Quads.” “Wow!!” “But it is kittens this time”, he said. “Nurse!” he shouted as Madge fainted. Madge was lying on the armchair looking out of the window. How could she explain this to Jack .He had left 4 months earlier with Jo in her care. ” Take care of her” he had said “I have to got o this world tour or I would have been here with her. She is no longer young you know” And Madge had promised that she would and now this. She suddenly sat up nearly dropping the tea cup in her hand. What had Dr Peters meant this time? Surely Jo could not have kittens. She looked around the room. It had photos of Joey’s children neatly framed. The first showed Joey’s triplets. She looked again. She closed her eyes and opened them. No she had seen correctly. Len was a puppy dog, Con was a Koala and Margot was a monkey. Stephen looked like a colt, Charles an owl, Mike was a bear cub. Felix and Felicity were lion cub and a fawn. Cecil was a parrot. She looked at herself in the mirror. She looked like herself. She closed her eyes and decided to lie down quietly. This was shocking. She felt a hand on her arm and opened her eyes to see Jem looking at her with concerned eyes.”Oh Jem!” she cried flying into his arms. “Did you ….? How ……? Did Dr Peters…….? What shall I tell Jack?” “Wait dearest. Yes it is kittens this time. You know Jo. You have to be strong for Jo. She wants to abandon them or leave them on the doorstep. We cannot allow that. It is cold outside” “No.No You are correct. I will go to her and explain.” Madge got up and started going out. “Madge. Madge” She could hear Jem calling her. “Madge. Madge. Wake up.” Madge opened her eyes. She was lying on an armchair and Dr Peters was shaking her gently. She looked around wildly. Now Len and Con Margot and all the other kids looked normal in the photos. “Nurse” Dr Peters shouted worried by the wild look in Madge’s eyes “Please bring a glass of water” “Drink this “ he commanded “ Joey is alright. It was nothing. Her stomach was a bit upset but now it is alright. I have told her to rest for a day. It is alright.” Madge slowly calmed down. She recalled her dream and shuddered. It was horrible. She smiled and turned to Dr Peters to tell him she was better now when Matron entered looking excited. “Dr Peters. Joey had kittens!.” Madge promptly fainted. ********************************************************************** Later when Dr Peters was regaling the story to Jem remarked “I told the matron not to name the cat Joey. But they all adore Jo and wanted to have her namesake in the Hospital. |
