Inspired by her comments in the Happy Day thread about her trip to Achensee, I thought I'd give ChubbyMonkey a chance to be rescued properly!

Ariel didn’t know how she’d got into this horrifying predicament, but here she was, hanging desperately to a crumbling cliff edge, far too terrified even to scream for help. What was the German for “help!” anyway? Wet drops landed on her straining hands, and in a moment, rain was falling in torrents. She tried to flick wet hair vainly out of her eyes.

Then, just before she thought she could hold on no longer, a voice exclaimed mildly, in English, “Good lord. Can you hold on for a moment longer, miss?”

“Yes,” she croaked. Relief made her feel suddenly stronger...

In just a few moments, the man had lain down on the ledge above her and spread his coat over the edge. Then a hand, warm and hard, fastened tightly on her wrist. A rope then was slid gently down her back. “I’ve got you safe for now,” he said. “Try to get your foot through the rope and stand on it.” It took several desperate moments before she could make her head move enough to look down; dizzily, but with encouraging words from above, she slid her foot through the noose at the rope’s end. “Good girl,” he said.

This is brilliant, and completely unexpected, thankyou so much! I can't say thankyou enough.

Gradually, he crawled backwards, the rope wound round the hand which was not clutched on hers, and then she could see over the top of the ledge. It seemed like only seconds later that she was lying on the sweet, wet grass, several feet from the edge, shuddering with relief. She could not look up for several minutes, and when she did, she saw her rescuer crouched beside her, coiling up the rope. He was tall, with fair hair darkened by rain, and kind blue eyes. “Oh, thank-you,” she said. “You saved my life!” She sat up, trembling with reaction.

Ok, I confess, I am a spineless jellyfish

He sounds very nice. Do I get to know more about him please?

Thankyou, I'm enjoying this a lot!

It would be no fun not to be a spineless jellyfish in this situation Ariel! *cheers the (assumed) doctor on*

“We should get you out of this rain. My name’s James Gordon, by the way.” He stood and held out a hand: Ariel grasped it, and was pulled to her feet. Then he put his coat round her aching shoulders, and added, “Can you walk?”

“I’ll try,” she replied.

He gave an approving nod, and they walked on down the path together. When she stumbled, his hand was under her elbow to steady her: she could feel its warmth through her cardigan. She managed a few words in response to his remarks, and glowed under his sideways glances of concern.

Oddly, she didn’t mind the walk, despite the pain of her wrenched arms and bleeding fingers, and the pouring rain. And then, when she had almost fallen, he had swung her up into his arms and carried her. When she protested, he said, “You’re only a wee bit of a lassie,” broadening his slight accent, and she subsided, feeling a good deal better for the ride.

Too soon, it seemed, they had reached the lakeshore, and he was asking her where she was staying. “At the Ferienhaus Unger,” she replied.

“Good.” He stopped, and swung her gently to her feet.

I'm glad you're enjoying this... :D

Does James perhaps go by a shortened form of his name, usually?
If so, Ariel had better brush up on her ceilidh skills :)

She only had to walk a few steps before they were both inside the guest house, and her rescuer was explaining to Frau Unger, in fluent German, what had happened. A steam bath was suggested, with which he heartily agreed.

“Um,” he said, turning to Ariel and looking a little sheepish, “Would you like to have dinner with me this evening?”

She smiled. “I’d love to! Thank-you very much.”

His uncertain expression broke out into a smile of his own. “Shall I collect you at half-past nineteen?”

She nodded agreement, and they parted. Happiness seemed to flood her whole being.

Awww, yay, my doctor likes me! I was so sure art was going to imitate life. Though I confess that it would have had to have been more of a steam shower.

Thankyou, this is really exciting!

Dressing after her bath was a painful process, but she did not even consider sending a sincere apology. She was glad that she’d had no previous need to wear the dress that she’d brought more in hope than expectation. James was waiting in the lobby when she descended, feeling rather shy, but his appreciative smile made her feel more confident.

“Feeling better?” he asked. “You look much better, if I may say so.”

She laughed. “You may. But I do feel much better, thank-you.”

Outside the hotel, the rain had stopped, and the evening was clear and pleasantly warm.

At the restaurant, something about her companion’s interest made Ariel talk more than she usually did, and she found the food delicious. She even confessed the inspiration for her trip, and to her surprise, he said, smiling: “I read a few of the books when I was a kid. My sisters were fans. They always wanted to attend the Chalet School – in the Tyrol years, naturally.”

“Me too,” Ariel said, rather surprised. “This is my first holiday on my own, and it’s lived up to all my expectations. I don’t even mind my cliff adventure, now that I’ve met you.”

The evening passed far too quickly, Ariel thought, as they lingered over coffee, and watched the stars glittering over the dark masses of the mountains. “I’m glad I took a few extra days off,” James observed thoughtfully. “Jan – my eldest sister – suggested that I should come up here after my conference in Innsbruck finished.”

“So am I,” she replied. “What do you do?”

“I’m a doctor – well, only a junior one at present. I want to specialise in paediatrics.”

He talked a little about his training, stimulated by her interest, and revealed he was working at a hospital in Exeter.

Glad you're enoying it, Ariel! One more post to go...

At last, they could not legitimately stay any longer: the proprietor, although having some sympathy with the obviously smitten, had to resort to bringing the bill. Ariel and James left, reluctantly, and walked back slowly to the guest house. They stood in the moonshadow of the upper balcony. Ariel’s heart thumped as he took her hand. “I’m going back to England tomorrow,” he said, “but I’d like to see you again. Could I have your number?”

Immediately, she wrote down her mobile number in the notebook he held out to her. Then he kissed her gently. “It’s only Auf Wiedersehen.”

THE END
