Miss Annersely was sitting in her room with Nancy Wilmot, Joey, Madge, and Rosalie. They were waiting for Cornelia’s children. Cornelia , it seemed had come across some girls who were studying in a school which was closing down. Their guardian was an old man who was a friend of Cornelia’s father. He had appealed to Cornelia to help him. Characteristically she agreed and had written to Chalet school for help. There was no place the previous term and Cornelia had spent 2 months with the girls regaling them with stories about the Chalet school . The girls had come all excited and were now standing in front of the Head’s desk. Miss Annersely looked at them. They looked back with clear blue eyes with no trace of shyness or awe on their faces. “They are very friendly and innocent as babies. There is no trace of malice in them. Of course they speak artlessly. But they mean no harm. They may look like school girls but are as innocent as babies.” Cornelia had written The Head liked what she saw. She liked girls like this. She could shape their character. It was like a clean canvas in front of her. She could paint whatever she wanted. She did not have to make changes. Everything would be new. The school needed pupils like this. “Welcome to Chalet School. I hope you will be happy here. Rosalie here will tell you later about your forms. These girls were sent by Cornelia. You remember her don’t you?” “The American with yellow hair?” “Yes and a ramrod like jaw and a vocabulary you wont find in any book.” said Joey. The girls looked at her in interest. Comprehension dawned suddenly on Helen’s face. “Oh I know you. Miss Cornelia told us about you. You are always there to welcome new girls. You are Jo, the first pupil of the school and an authoress. I love your books. You know Anne, she is Joey Bettany. We have read all your books and we love them.” “You mean the Miss Cornelia’s friend who put snails on the window and in one Sale tried to suppress Bill? “ “Yes, the same one who put flour on some girl’s hair and who always waves her hands while talking and who had fallen in the pond while skating and had bronchitis and was very ill.? “But you do look alright now. It is nice to see you healthy. I hope you do not get cold just standing in front of an open window.?” “Where you really thrown out of the Art Class? I hate art. Can you tell me how you did it?” “Are you still afraid of dentists? Did you really talk slang?” “Hilda. Hilda. Now be quiet. You should not ask such things. Gwen, why are you crying?” “She does not look motherly. She looks and talks like a school girl. How can she mother us?” “Shhh! Do not cry. Did not Miss Cornelia tell us that she is motherly?” Joey had turned pale after 2 sentences. First she was ready to be amused. But now she was feeling sick. Highly strung and very sensitive, this was hurting her. Madge , after one look at her white face and big dark eyes, rushed to her side. Joey had told her a secret this morning and Jack had impresses upon her that she should take care . Hilda , first time in her life look helpless and was slowly turning to a dark shade of purple. Nancy Wilmot sat placidly waiting for the girls to stop. For stop they would at some point. Rosalie turned her face to hide a laughter which was bubbling up. “Tell them to go. Go away. They cannot come tot this school I will not allow it.” Cried Jo and fainted. “Girls wait outside and think of what you have done” Rosalie said gravely and hurried them out of the room and ran to call Matey. Matey , when told about the incident saw the funny side and in few seconds everyone had collapsed. Not so Jo. She was hurried to the hospital where she complacently delivered her quads-2 boys and 2 girls and gave that as an excuse of not having her usual invitation to new girls. She never had new girls to tea again. |
