Just a silly little story inspired by the discussion of "current events" in Anything Goes... :D

Jo vaulted through Hilda's office window and landed with a grunt as she narrowly missed crashing into the Headmistress' desk. "I'm taking the steps next time," she grumbled as she righted herself.

"Don't be silly, Joey," Hilda retorted. "If you came up the steps Someone would be sure to notice you - and then we'd never get our hands on them!"

"Sorry," Joey replied, not sounding particularly sorry. She opened her large handbag, making a face when she noticed the damn thing was now coloured green, and pulled out a square package wrapped in brown paper. "You'd think Someone who was so interested in dormitory routines could at least mention there was a local newsagents'. Or a paperboy!"

"Really, Jo," Hilda murmured, her fingers already deftly untying the string around the package. "And what would a paperboy do in winter?"

"Wear nailed boots, like the rest of us," Joey grumbled. "Thank goodness for Winnie Embury, that's all I can say, and thank goodness Someone is forever sending me to see her." She paused, and realising Hilda wasn't particularly interested in listening to her complaints, asked instead, "Are you fine getting them across to Nell?"

"Yes - I think Rosalie's going to be taking a message across to them later, so she can smuggle our contraband across then too." Hilda paused, and glanced up at her friend. "Sorry Jo - we do appreciate everything that you and Winnie do, you know!" Jo flushed.

"I wasn't looking for thanks, Hilda - and I didn't mean to take up so much of your time, either! I'm just fed up over having to give three English Tea's this week - three! As if I wouldn't like to spend time with my own children occasionally!"

And with that remark she vaulted back out of the window, accidentally landing on top of Gaudenz who cried out with a "Oh sh- I mean, Mein Gott!"

Hilda didn't hear any of this, however. She had, by this time, managed to get the package open, and was happily doing the crossword in the Times. It was such a bother that Someone didn't think of these things, but it was always such a relief when she could get her hands on a newspaper!

*wonders how many copies Jo & Winnie smuggle in -- or whether Hilda gets first dibs on every crossword*

Thank you, Nightwing.

Hilda gets first dibs, of course - but Nell doesn't mind as long as she doesn't touch the sudoku (and everyone else pretends not to care  )

As a teacher we get cheap papers and many of us just get them for the puzzles and papers are forever going missing because others take them.

Short but very amusing. I'm off to have a peek around to see if you've written anything else...

I'd be lost without my daily paper so can understand why Hilda was so excited. Only I don't think I am smart enough for the Times crossword.
