Anyone may contribute and add as much or as little as they like. The post must follow on from the previous post and relate to the CS in some way. The person who completes the drabble must give it a title and begin a new drabble. Drabbles must be at least a page in length. Have fun.For the purposes of this drabble the school is at Plas Howell and Dr Jack is abroad at a conference.

The gathering crowd looked at each other in amusement. The normally professional and important doctors of the Sanatorium set in the Welsh Hills were behaving like a bunch of school boys. They were standing in a group at the front all clutching tickets with numbers on them, jostling each other and calling out for Jem to get on with it. Jem was to draw the ticket out of the big box in front of him. By virtue of not only being head of the San but also the only married man among them he alone had been excluded from taking part so he must draw out that all important ticket. Whoever had the corresponding ticket would be allowed to ask one of the Chalet School staff to marry them that year. The lucky man would then wait anxiously as the rest alternated between jeering and cheering him to find out the name of the mistress he must first woo and then claim as his bride. This was done by drawing the mistress's name out of another box. "Quiet please" Jem began. The tension mounted........

One doctor, Dr. Laverson, was holding his breath hopefully. He had met the lady of his dreams long ago, but he had been far too shy to approach the self possessed, dignified woman who haunted his dreams continually. He thought of her eyes, her hair, the voice which he knew Joey Maynard proclaimed to be one of her greatest assets. That important lady was here, of course, watching with bated breath, representing her husband who had fled as soon as he knew that the date was coming around.

Madame was also there, sat gracefully at the back of the dais her husband was performing the rite of passage on. She had to come, so that she could start to advertise for the post which would need filling once the doctor acheived his aim. The few members of the school staff which had been able to make it dotted about the crowd of patients and patient's family members, all of them eager to know who would be lucky this year.

Jem called the number. Dr. Laverson felt his mouth go dry, as he raised one hand in the air to claim this as his number. He could feel his heart beating painfully against his chest, and there was a blockage in his throat, as he waited for the name of his lady to be called. He could feel the others around him, cheering him on, calling for Jem to hurry up and pull out a name.

A hush descended over the room as he handed the box to Madame to select the ticket.

Madge closed her eyes as she dipped her hand into the box, lest she should be accused to favouritism. She pulled out the first slip of paper she touched and, with some ceremony, pulled it open to read it out. As she did so, she visibly choked.

"What's wrong, Madge?" called an anxious voice from the audience - Joey, always quick to worry where her sister was concerned.

"It says - it says -" Madge cleared her throat and tried to regain her composure. "It says - Tristan Denny," she said, her voice clear and strong.

There was a stunned silence.

"What" exploded Jem. "Who put his name in there? It says Chalet School Mistresses, I mean we all know Tristian is a little queer but" Up jumped Mr Denny "Libel" he yelled. "Who do you think you are talking about!" "Hush Tristian you know he is only speaking the truth." soothed his sister. Tristian sat down duely squashed but still silently fuming. He had liked Dr Laverson for a long time and had worked hard to ensure every one of those slips held his name. He was not to be out done for up now Miss Annersley rose dignaty incarnate. "I propose we draw another name" she said her clear voice reaching every corner of the room. "It would not be fair to Harry I mean Dr Laverson" and here she gave him a soothing glance. Jem agreed straight away and Mr Denny smirked as Madge once again closed her eyes and drew out a slip.

Hilda Annersley felt her mouth go dry as she waited for the name to be read out - was there any chance . . .she had tried to avoid his eye, but could not resist a sidelong glance at Harry Laverson. Yes! he was looking at her . . .

Madge cleared her throat to read the name as Hilda and Harry locked eyes

"Er... Matey!" Madge read out.

"What?" cried Hilda, immediately distressed. She'd crept into Jem's office the night before and changed every single piece of paper so that it read her own name. It was unfortunate that somehow she'd missed Plato's name, but how had she missed her own?

"Oh, well done, Matey!" That was Joey, Matron's long-time pet. While the older woman still cowed her at times, she was immensely fond of her, and looked forward to undoubtedly holding a place of honour at her wedding, and probably having at least one new goddaughter named after her. "She's one of the foundation stones of the school, you know," she whispered to the young doctor standing next to her.

Matron herself was openly smirking. How fortunate it was that she'd followed Hilda to the Round House last night, and realised what she had been up to! It had taken all of a matter of minutes to take out all of the pieces of paper with Hilda's name on them and filling it instead with her own - although how she'd missed Plato's name she didn't know.

Still - now she could finally take her revenge on Hilda...

Hilda, meanwhile, was striding up on to the Dais, a look of sheer annoyance on her face. Jem was, frankly, embarrassing himself as he rocked with laughter over the whole proceedings. He had heard all three break ins to his study last night, but he had let them get on with it. He was, after all, a respectable member of the community, far be for him to become involved in such childish games. He would be ashamed if Sybil stooped to such levels!

"Madge," exclaimed Hilda. "Can't you see that this is ridiculous? We can't lose Matey, she's one of the founding stones of the school, she scares us all into obedience. What would you do if we had another one of those awful matrons, like Matron Besly? I cannot allow it."

"What are you trying to say?" asked Madge quietly. Hilda turned to face the dais and, in her clear yet queit voice, declared, arms spread about,

"Nobody else can marry Dr. Laverson because I love him!"

The silence that greeted this astonishing confession was somewhat amusing to the would be passers by. They did not realise the full enormity of the usually impassive dignafied headmistress's embarrassing declaration. Dr Laverson grinned idiotically and started to move toward her already fumbling with a box in his pocket.

Everyone else was still too stunned to speak apart from Jem who was slowing suffocating in an attempt to restrain his laughter. Just as Dr Laverson reached the dais and went down on one knee a voice from the back of the room cried out "Hang on a minute here, Hilda belongs to me!" Everyone looked at a somewhat irate Nell Wilson. "Did our private commitment ceromonies mean nothing to you, or what about your pledge to put me first before all other or the meaning of these rings." she indicated to the seal ring on her finger, of which Hilda wore an identical one.

Dr Laverson had had enough. He had waited long enough for Hilda and he wasn't going to wait any longer. "Hilda" he began will you do me the honour of becomming my wife?" "Now see here" both Matey and Tristian shouted as one. "Our names were called first. You have to marry me. You entered a leagally binding contract." The two paused for breath, glared at each other and lunged for DR Laverson. The room decended into chaos...

Eventually, the violent ringing of a bell, wielded enthusiastically by Joey, calmed the stentorian crowd, enabling her to speak. "I think, perhaps, Dr Laverson, there's something you ought to tell everyone before someone makes a binding commitment without the true facts being known..."

Dr Laverson paled. How did Joey know? Had Jack retold that drunken conversation? Surely not!

"If you won't tell," Joey said, grinning, wildly amused by the kerfuffle (having already bagged her doctor), "I certainly shall."

Dr Laverson grimaced at her tormentor. "Oh, alright, dash it. My real name is not Henry, but Harriet. And I'm a woman. But I am a doctor, if that helps," she added hopefully.

The instant pandemonium this announcement sparked needed to be seen to be believed. Jem gave up all pretence of dignity as his chair fell over backwards and simply lay on the stage, laughing so hard he cried like a baby. Madge tried to stop Hilda Annersley from embarrassing herself further. Joey rang her bell again, but to little avail.

And, in the midst of it all, Tristan Denny bounded forwards, knocking people aside like skittles, and swung the doctor into his arms. In his booming voice he declared happily,

"I told you that I won the raffle!"

"Good and I thought I was going to be stuck with one of them," said Dr Laverson with a jerk of her thumb towards the others. "I do so love romantic looking men," and she wrapped her arms around Tristan Denny and the two embraced.

"But, but," sputtered Hilda and Matey.

"But that means I'll lose a doctor," said Jem suddenly standing up and no longer laughing.

"That's alright," said Dr Laverson cheerfully. "I'll work at the Chalet School with Tristan. Just think of all the time you will be saved being called out to the school. Matey may be my nurse. I'm sure she's capable enough," she added with a wicked grin.

"Done," said Madge with a sigh of relief. "Now I won't lose any staff."

Nell came up quietly next to Hilda, and slipped her hand into her long-term life partner's. "Hilda, dearest," she said quietly. "I know things haven't been going well for us lately - and I know Dr Laverson is very charming, and rather beautiful and - oh, everything I'm not! But I love you, and she doesn't. Can't we give things another shot?"

Hilda threw Nell off, with an impatient shrug. She was quick to join in the scrum of staff now pleading plaintively that this couldn't be allowed to happen. None of them seemed to want Dr Laverson on the staff. He didn't care; he was too enamoured with Tristan's eyes, his hair, having a very first kiss with her new partner.

Nell slunk slowly back to the corner, where Joey was doing her best to keep out of the excitement (she wasn't to be overexcited for the next few months, insomuchas this was possible with Joey). Her ex-pupil and great friend took her arm in a friendly grasp.

"Ignore Hilda. Jack and I will adopt you instead."

Nell gave a derisive snort. "What! Be adopted by you and be an unpaid drudge. No thanks!" And Nell stormed off.

Just then Jack came over and flung a cheery arm around her shoulder.

"Cheer up!" he said brightly. "You know that Matey comes over once a week, and I've been trying to talk Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot into joining us now and then as well."

"Forget it, Jack. Matey is not enough!" hissed Joey. "You know I never wanted you. All those wretched children (how many do I have again?), those stupid books, that unruly dog the school inflicted on us, and darning your smelly socks week in week out. All I've ever wanted is to live in a community of women. That drippy eldest daughter of mine can stay at home and be responsible if she wants: I'm off to be a NUN!"

And with that she threw her lime green hat to the floor and ripped off her matching dress, quite unaccountably revealing a full habit beneath it, along with a wimple carefully disguised as a set of earphones.

The habit was, of course, a lime green colour, as She had decided to join the order of the Green Nuns, dedicated to St David Bellamy, the famed Biologist, in whose memory the green nuns also wore a clip-on beard. Running to the carpark, she jumped in Minnie, now converted to working on recycled cooking fat from the Chalet School kitchens, and sped down the Golden Valley! Jack gazed at her open mouthed, until the golden voice of Rosalie Dean sounded in his ear. "Thank goodness she's finally gone! That just leaves the way open for you and I, my dear!"
