Felicity Maynard had had a blazing row with her triplet sisters!

To be fair, the triplets had been doing as Mama bid them, to check that Felicity had packed properly and done her holiday homework. Felicity was famed for her lack of organisation. In the end the triplets gave up, leaving Felicity to incur the wrath of Matey and Auntie Hilda.

Meanwhile, Stephen had marshalled the remaining siblings away to play riotous ball games outside. He knew from bitter personal experience that if the trips were rowing with you or with each other, you got out of the way and quickly! You did not stay to watch or smirk! If Len, Con or Margot blew up, just go!

Felicity gave full rein to her views on older sisters to anyone who would listen. She described the trips as “bossy, overbearing, interfering, arrogant, selfish and that is just their better qualities!”

Unknown to Felicity, Jos Marvel had overheard her rant. She loved a good bit of gossip about the prees! She laughed and laughed, spending more time than usual in the splashery than was required. Then nemesis descended in the form of the Games Prefect, Margot Maynard herself!

“Why are you wasting time in the splashery? Stop that silly giggling Jos and hurry along to Abendessen at once!”

Jos scowled and departed. Margot thought no more of it. Sadly it was to have repercussions. Jos had not liked Margot’s curt instructions at games practice over the past terms. She resented Len’s strictness during prep and she fell foul of Con on several occasions as regarding the library. Why on earth shouldn’t she throw paper aeroplanes in the library? Who cared if she returned a book late? The other girl would just have to wait! Well, if Margot thought she could boss her around like Felicity, she had another thing coming.

Jos Marvel was one of these girls who only ever saw her side of the argument. As a result she was a most aggravating creature to prefects, seniors and staff alike! To her, the prees were interfering busybodies! Well this was the straw that broke the camel’s back! She spent most of tomorrow’s history lesson concocting a wicked plan to get back at the brusque games prefect. Miss Charlesworth was not happy and rained down some extra work on the young madam.

Sadly, this made young Jos more determined.

She glanced out of the window and saw Gaudenz painting some woodwork. Paint! Varnish! All sorts of gooey things! Yes! A plan was forming in wicked Jos’s mind.
Margot Maynard would regret being so bossy with her these past few terms! If the prefects were so keen on manners, well they could learn some respect for her!

Her wicked scheme worked out! Luckily for her, Gaudenz had been taken ill, and using her skeleton key (a gift from her American uncle) she had gained access to his paint shed and appropriated some violent colours and varnish for good measure.

She knew of a deep hole in the grounds of the Chalet School, just in the copse, which bordered on Freuedesheim. It was about ten feet deep and very muddy. It had been cordoned off, as Gaudenz had planned to fill it in before he fell sick. Jos had been fascinated by this hole, wondering if it had been an old rabbit warren. The prefects knew about it, it was out of bounds of course! Over the past few days, Jos had moved the paint to the hole. She had loosened the lids, she looked in the hole, it was nice and muddy! Torrential rain the previous night had seen to that and the walls of the hole were slippery. All she needed now was Margot.

It was dusk. Margot was not on prep duty. Ted, Len and Con had that honour tonight! It was just as well, Margot was puzzling over one of the most difficult biology questions she had ever seen, concerning liver function tests! Oh dear! It would be too easy to call Papa and ask him, but she had to work it out for herself.

Suddenly an urgent knock on the prefects common room door sounded. Rolling her eyes, Margot said, “Come in!”

It was Jos.

“Oh Margot! I..”

“Well, what is it? Spit it out!”

“There’s a little girl fallen down that hole Gaudenz was going to fill in. She’s not from the Chalet School…”

Margot leapt up. “Right!” She was out of the prefects room in seconds and hailed a passing senior. “Jack Lambert! Apparently a little girl has fallen into that hole Gaudenz was going to fill in. Please inform Miss Annersley and Matron. I am going there to see if I can help.”

Jack nodded and sped to do her duty. Margot’s concern was admirable. She had taken Jos’s words on trust and was concerned that some poor child was lost, hurt and frightened. She did not stop to question how Jos knew of this when she should have been getting ready for prep.

Jos was alarmed at the mention of the Head’s name. She had not bargained for this! She had to act quickly! What if Margot waited for the Head? But no! Margot was already heading off in the direction of the ‘black hole’ as it was called. Jos ran after her. She had to get there before Margot realised it was all a rag.

She caught up with the prefect at the edge. Margot was calling out in French, German, English and Italian, but answer came there none. Jos barged into Margot who was taken by surprise!

Wicked Jos wasted no time in pouring a lurid green onto Margot’s red gold hair. This was followed by a violent scarlet, bright yellow and a navy blue. Margot could only splutter and protest in rage; covered in paint and mud, she looked a sight!

“Teach you to boss me around Margot Maynard! You and all the prees can start treating ME with a bit of respect! Learn some manners yourself!” Young Jos got carried away with herself and was about to pour an olive green onto Margot when a hand gripped her arm and the paint splattered all over Miss Annersley!

“You little beast! How dare you! Wait till I get out of this!” bellowed Margot.

Jos was not listening. She stared in horror at Miss Annersley’s grim face. Accompanying Miss Annersley were Jack Maynard, complete with doctor’s bag, and Len and Con with ladder and rope. They got the full beauty of Margot’s cursing. Jack peered over the edge and said calmly, “Come along Margot, Miss Annersley’s here, so are Len and Con. We’ve got a ladder to get you out.” Secretly he was flabbergasted at the sight of his multicoloured daughter. The look Jos received from Len and Con as they released their sister was far worse than the one Margot shot at Jos.

“Miss Annersley, I think it would be best if we return to Freuedesheim. It is nearer, and you will be able to change there. So will Margot.” Suggested Jack.

Jos was led into custody back at the Chalet School by Len and Con.

Nemesis arrived the next day. A thoroughly scrubbed and starched Margot gave evidence, as did the whole body of prefects. No, Margot had not provoked the girl, who was a difficult child anyway. Margot was definitely in the clear and held the whole support of the prefects and seniors.

Then with knees quaking, Jos was called in. Her courage failed her as she saw Miss Annersley’s grim countenance, and she wept.

“You may well cry, young lady.”

“Please Miss Annersley, I’m very sorry I splattered you with paint!”

“And what about Margot? You certainly meant it at the time to her!”

Weeping, Jos said, “They are always so bossy! It feels they just treat us like worms. I just wanted to stop that, so I picked on Margot. Not for any reason, she’s just the bossiest. I wanted to show the prefects I won’t be pushed around!”

“My dear girl, don’t you realise their authority comes directly from me? Would you have liked to do that to me?”

Jos shook her head.

“Have you anything further to say?” the rich, kind gentle tones of Miss Annersley seemed to entice Jos to break down.

How many times had this technique been successful? Miss Annersley’s voice was one of her greatest assets as Joey proclaimed. It had melted the heart of every evil girl since Miss Annersley had first come to the Chalet School in the Tirol. It had helped reform the wicked ways of the likes of Evvy Lannis, Cornelia Flower, Joyce Linton, Sybil Russell, Prudence and Priscilla Dawbarn, Emerence Hope, Margot Maynard, Jack Lambert and many more! Would Jos Marvell become the latest to bow down before the Head? Would she reform and become a girl of whom the Chalet School could be proud?

Would she break down in tears in the arms of Miss Annersley, begging for mercy; Pleading for forgiveness and readmission to the school community? Would she be swept off to bed by Matey with a glass of hot milk?

No.

“I’m very sorry if I hurt you Miss Annersley, but I feel I would be lying if I said I was sorry what I did to Margot. I accept that their authority comes from you, but the way they speak to us, all of them, is so nasty. Is it any wonder I feel like this?”

A glint of cold steel clouded Miss Annersley’s eyes. A signal of impending doom.

“I’m sorry too Jocelyn. It has come to this.”

Jos’ heart leapt. Was she to be expelled? Was she to be sent to Freuedesheim to grovel before Mrs Maynard as she probed her character and forced her to read another of her books?

“I have no hesitation in appointing you to be Head Girl of the Chalet School. Helena Maynard will take a short exeat for her exams. Her sisters Margaret and Constance will join her. You will lead the prefects and see how difficult it is to be a Head Girl; You shall also take over Constance’s duties on the Chaletian and Margaret’s duties as Games Prefect.”

Jos couldn’t believe her ears.

The Triplets couldn’t believe it either! They hurtled back to Freuedesheim before Hilda Annersley could change her mind! Felicity was highly jealous and resolved to make trouble!

The school could hardly contain itself! Jos Marvel appointed Head Girl, Games Prefect and Editor of the Chaletian! It had been true! A red faced Jos had been called up to receive all three badges, by a grinning Miss Annersley and other staff. Jos had been told before the whole school, that such a “Strong character to lead the school cannot fail!”

Jos waited nervously in the Head Girl’s chair in the Prefect’s Room. She felt all the trappings of office were too heavy for her. She felt in awe of the wooden noticeboard naming past Head Girls: G V Cochrane, J M Bettany, M C Venables, B R Chester,
C N A Flower, M C Burnett, G Marani. She felt giddy reading the names! She had got to C M Humphries, when the other prefects entered. In fact it was just the one remaining prefect: Ted Grantley.

“Hello Jos! The Abbess has given the others a holiday. She did offer one to me, but I volunteered to help you. If you can’t trust your second prefect, who can you trust?! You’re the boss. What do we do?”

Jos was speechless. “Well…I…er. What does Len do?”

“Sign the book of the last meeting asking if everything was accurate.”

“Er is everything in here accurate?” Jos flicked through the huge volume, which Head Girls since the days of Gisela Marani had used.

“Couldn’t tell you my love. I was sick that day. Suspected tonsillitis. Matey had me locked up in the San!”

“Oh!”

“You could always sign it and put an addendum.”

“What’s that?”

“Just a note to say that to the best of your knowledge and mine, these notes are accurate. Oh and try and learn some Latin. It will help when you take the juniors for prep.”

Horrified, Jos asked, “When’s that?”

“Tonight. Every night. Because it’s just you and me, the juniors and middles do their prep together. Anyway. You’re the Head Girl, you should know the junior and middles subjects inside out, so you can help with any questions.”

“Where will you be?”

“Taking senior prep. It’s for the best. I’ve done the senior work before, you haven’t. You may be Head Girl, but you are only a middle. It wouldn’t be kind to the seniors to put someone who doesn’t know the senior syllabus in charge of their prep.”

Academic work was not Jos’s forte. Indeed her only talent lay in being argumentative.

“Can’t the staff help?”

“Talk sense! They’ve been teaching all day, and they have to plan their lessons for the next day. Hmm. Maybe the Abbess should have made you a teacher!”

Jos shuddered at the thought. Her feelings dropped lower at Ted’s next bombshell.

“It’s not wise for prefects to go running to the staff. The kids lose all respect for you. They will think you can’t control them. In any case, they’ve all gone out to celebrate Ferry’s 30th! That means we’ve got to look after Abendessen too”

And with that, Ted disappeared.

Hehe this is a complete minefield for Jos!

Hope she enjoys her time as HG....and methinks Ted might be more of hindrance than a help.

Poor, poor Joss! What a lot of shocks she's had in a few minutes.

#22: poor Jos Author: PhilLocation: London UK PostPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2005 8:15 am

The bell for Abendessen rang. Jos was chivvying her classmates as they dawdled in the splasheries.

“Come along girls, hurry up!”

She was not expecting the following replies.
“Oh Jos! We’ve always been friends! You don’t have to shout at me!”
“Jos can you take away that order mark Ted gave me?”
“Jos, can I have my money back out of the fines box? Burnie fined me for something I didn’t say!”
“Jos do I have to do my Latin tonight?”

The emotional blackmail levelled at poor Jos was too much. At the top of her voice, she shouted. “Get into the Speisesaal at once, before you all get an order mark!”

“Ooooh! Hoity toity Head Girl!”
“You’re not really a Head Girl Jos, you’re our age!”
“Don’t get any airs and graces Jos!”

Ted appeared in the doorway. Silence fell immediately.

“Come along girls, Karen’s made Pflaumentorte tonight! That’s a real treat is it not?”

The faces of the middles lit up and they joyously filed into the Speisesaal.

At first Abendessen went successfully, until Ted pointed out Felicity Maynard talking with her mouth full in full view of Jos and Ted.

“Jos you’ve got to do something. Bad table manners. You’re the Head Girl. I can’t do it for you. You must show your authority.” Ted muttered. Felicity was gleefully making a disgusting mess, which even sickened her cousin Ailie Russell.

Jos rang the bell. “Felicity Maynard, come here.”

Felicity dawdled up to the prefects’ table, all eyes of the school upon her.

“What do you want?” she said sulkily.

Jos overlooked Felicity’s impertinence. “Felicity, you are aware that talking with your mouth full of food is dreadful table manners. You will take an order mark, and if it happens again, you will be sent to the punishment table for the day. “

Felicity mumbled something like, “Ha! Pot calling the kettle black!”

“I beg your pardon?” said Jos doing her best impersonation of Len at her iciest.

Then in clarion tones, Felicity said, “I’m sure we all remember who was sent to the punishment table for exactly the same thing last term! Well, if the ‘head girl’ can do it, so can I!”

Someone sniggered, Ted shot them a warning glance.

Jos was momentarily thrown! What would Len or Margot do? She put on her ‘Margot’ voice. Jos’s impersonations of Margot often amused her little gang.

“Now see here you impertinent child, you will finish your meal in silence and then report to me straight after prep!”

Felicity seemed quite unruffled. “OK.” She paused to whisper, “That really wasn’t a good impression of Margot. You haven’t quite got the glare right, and Margot always stands with feet slightly apart when she’s blasting you!”

“Slang as well! Oh dear, I don’t envy young Miss Maynard when she comes in for a prefects meeting!” uttered Ted.

Prep was no better. Every prank under the sun seemed to be played on poor Jos! Someone had set off a firecracker near a junior, reducing the child to tears. A mouse was let loose in the prep and several girls screamed. Others played noughts and crosses right under Jos’s nose as she walked around the desks. Then Felicity started throwing paper aeroplanes and singing.

Something in Jos snapped. Grabbing Felicity, she took her straight to Miss Annersley’s office with the words “It’s a Head’s Report for you, young lady!”

But Miss Annersley was not available. Neither was Miss Dene. In panic, Jos went to the staffroom. Empty. She dragged Felicity up to Matron’s room, but this was deserted too.

Suddenly below, she could hear a riot in the prep room she had just left. It sounded like a real free for all!

“Felicity, telephone your home! I want to speak to your mother!”

Felicity gleefully obliged and used the phone in Matron’s office, Jos anxiously awaited.

Felicity grinned as she heard her sister answer. “Len, it’s Felicity! Jos can’t cope!” and she laughed at the glaring Jos.

“Please Len, you’ve got to come back! I’ll say I’m sorry to Margot, I’ll say I’m sorry to all of you!” begged Jos.

Jos was so distressed, she would have dressed in sackcloth and ashes in public to do penance before the prefects.

What she heard next terrified her. A crowd of bloodthirsty middles were racing up the stairs, chanting such slogans of revolution as “Down with the Prefects!” “Scrag Jos!” “Let’s scrag the Head Girl!” “Tyrant!” “Traitor!”

“Please Len! You must send help!” shrieked Jos.

Len laughed and put the receiver down.

The Middles were upon her, and carried her downstairs to a kangaroo court in her own classroom!

“We find you guilty of being bossy, interfering and nasty. Have you anything to say before sentence is carried out?” someone in a gruesome paper mask asked.

Sentence was to be a bucket of icy water, which was going to be poured over Jos’s head!

Before Jos could reply, the triplets entered with Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, Matron,Ted and some seniors.

“Hooray! It’s Miss Annersley!”

There were cheers from the Middles and they all respectfully stood to one side for their Headmistress, and smiled like angels at their prefects as if they were favourite aunts.

This had all been a beastly trick, but it had worked!

“Miss…Miss Annersley, I want to resign as a prefect and as Head Girl! I was not able to maintain discipline and respect. I haven’t looked through the work for the Chaletian, and I haven’t even made the games lists out yet! I’m so sorry I was rude to all of you! I was nasty to my classmates, I was horrid to the prefects! I thought you had to be nasty to be a prefect. Margot I am so sorry! You might have hurt yourself when I pushed you into that hole!”

The Middles were dismissed back to prep.

Margot came forward and unbuttoned her games prefect badge from Jos. “Yes.” She said in such a calm gentle voice! “I could have been badly hurt. I could also have caught a heavy cold with all that mud, rainwater and paint. You now know what it is like to be a prefect. We knew you would try and use your powers as a prefect in a way in which you see us; as bossy bullies. You wouldn’t listen to us or to Miss Annersley. We had to make you understand that the prefects at the Chalet School don’t rule through fear or tyranny. We are not a bad bunch! We are actually quite friendly and human.”

Len came forward, “We had to make you reform Jos. People are not always right about everything and it takes time to grow up to be a suitable age to become a prefect.”

Con finished this off, “Just one thing Jos, if we have to speak to you on some problem again and you don’t understand why we are telling you off, just ask! We are here to explain things!”

“Just don’t go throwing paint over prefects in any more man traps.” Said Margot.

And so Jos Marvel the Penitent, repentant sinner was the latest reformed miscreant of the Chalet School.

It had seemed so amazing! It had appeared that with the connivance of Ted, the seniors and the middles and the juniors, an entire campaign of civil disobedience had been started to give Jos a much needed taste of her own medicine. Ted and the seniors had organised the revolution, on Miss Annersley’s written instructions, and Felicity was the signaller to announce when Len and Miss Annersley were due to return. Felicity had known very well the staff and prefects were all at Freuedesheim drinking Kaffee.

Joey Maynard was the only one disappointed. She had dearly wished to lead the revolution! However Jack had put his foot down at this. They were after all, trying for quads! At least she would be able to put it in one of her books! Jack realised he would not get any sense out of Joey that night, and “dosed her” for the umpteenth time in her life.
