Post subject:  When CBBers go Gathering....

We’ll join the Gather at the Horniman museum. They’re the strange looking group of women in the foyer. One is wearing lime-green socks, and another is sporting a gentian blue jacket so we know they must be Chalet fans.

“Which bit shall we do first?” asks an excited CBBer, bouncing maybe just a little and attracting strange looks from the museum staff.

The general consensus seems to be that the Natural History galleries would be the sensible place to start so the Gather move, en masse, in the direction of the stuffed animals. Not the cute, fluffy, teddy-bear type of stuffed animal – the kind that visited the taxidermist over a century ago.

“Are they actually real?” one CBBer asks in a small voice.

“That one isn’t,” another says, pointing to a very plastic looking dodo.

“I wonder if they come to life at night,” someone wonders, completely failing to notice that behind her a stuffed wryneck is stretching its wings airily, proving that lively exploits are not confined to night-time.

The CBBers wander around the gallery and off into a little side room, where they happen upon a box stuffed full of wine corks.

How much wine have we drunk?

“Enough for a medium sized Gather, I should think,” a CBBer says airily. “There’s only a thousand or so corks in there – we can polish that off in an afternoon.”

The group make its way back into main gallery and admire the magnificent walrus replesendent on his polystyrene iceberg, which bears the legend “DO NOT TOUCH THE WALRUS”. Bravely resisting temptation the CBBers move towards a case containing a number owls.

“Look, there’s Ron’s owl!”

“No,” someone who knew her Harry Potter corrects. “That’s Pigwidgeon, there. Or at least it was.”

“Ooooh look – a Hedwig!” another CBBer says admiring the snowy owl.

“I wonder which one’s Errol…” somebody muses.

Onwards and upwards they go, making their way around the balcony exhibits, which include a rather large amount of formaldehyde. Just when they finish and are relaxing in the book corner, enjoying the peace and quiet of the museum they are disturbed by the first small child of the day:

“MUMMY, there’s a BAT.”

Feeling that the atmosphere is somewhat ruined the group make their way downstairs to the aquarium (where 3 CBBers regress to their childhood and complete the children’s trail) and the music room (where 5 CBBers make a lot of noise, 2 CBBers plot to steal various exhibits, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is played on the thumb piano and the second small child of the day disappears in alarm as a particularly fine hammered dulcimer is admired).

After all this excitement the group make their way to Tesco, adding one member to their number, and purchase wine, with accompanying food, for a picnic. Lots of yibbling in the sun later, the group return to the museum to admire some voodoo altars, spend some money in the shop and buy some ice-cream.

Settling themselves on the grass the CBBers recommence their yibbling until interrupted by small child #3, attracted by the grapes, and small children #4-6squillion, attracted by the bubbles. As the day draws to a close, the gardens grow quieter and most of the small children leave, but the CBBers sit and yibble on. Child #6squillion-and-one shows a CBBer his stuffed snake and child #6squillion-and-two literally runs rings around them to the consternation of his mother. We’ll leave the CBBers there, yibbling in the sunshine, for we have to get home for Dr Who…..
