I've been playing with this idea for a little while. I hope you like it - it may turn out quite loopy!

‘Ohh, bother it! Jack!’ Joey called, and received no reply.
‘JACK!’ It was a clarion call, and Jack, sitting quietly in his study, reading through some papers, heaved a sigh and opened the door. ‘Yes my love?’
‘Bother you, you know I hate it when you call me that,’ Joey grumbled. She looked distracted, and Jack sighed again.
‘What did you need me for, Jo? I am – rather – busy, you know.’
Joey looked contrite. ‘Oh, I am sorry. It’s just, I couldn’t find my lighter anywhere. I can’t think where it has gone.’
Jack reached into his jacket pocket and handed over his silver lighter. ‘Bless me, why didn’t you just go and get a box of matches from Anna?’
‘I didn’t think of that.’ But Joey didn’t care, not really. She lit her cigarette, handed the lighter back to Jack and disappeared back into her writing room, closing the door firmly behind her.
Jack stared at the door with a look that was a mixture of annoyance and amusement. Joey, when she was in the thick of working out the plot for a new story, may as well be on the Moon, he thought as he returned to his own paperwork.

Half an hour later, Joey reached into her cardigan pocket, found once again that her lighter was absent and opened her mouth to call for Jack. Then remembering that he’d not been best pleased with her before, she changed her mind, pocketed her pack of cigarettes and headed for Anna’s domain.
Anna was, as always, extremely busy. With the ninth Maynard child, Cecily, having been born only five months ago, there was always an enormous pile of clothing to be washed, dried or ironed, plus the amount of cooking that needed doing, the cleaning, the stoves and fires to be lit…..poor Anna hardly ever stopped for a rest.
When Joey marched into the kitchen, demanding a box of matches, Anna looked, quite frankly, worried.
‘What for do you need matches, gnadige Frau?’ she demanded, and Joey laughed. ‘Only for my cigarettes, Anna. I have lost my lighter, you see.’
‘Ja.’ Anna removed a box from the drawer in the side of the massive kitchen table, and Joey took them with much relief.’ Don’t worry Anna, I shan’t be using them to set the house alight!’
‘Nein, mein Frau,’ Anna replied, turning back to the bowl of dough she had been kneading, but with a doubtful look on her face. That her mistress was scatty, there was no doubt. Anna could only hope that Joey wasn’t about to set more of her papers on fire, like she had back in Tyrol many years ago.

Nice start.
My SLOC lost his watch last week and found it in his coat lining. Maybe Joey has a similar problem.
