Post subject:  Two go trekking -Rosie and Nell have adventures in the Dales

Once upon a time there were two little girls. They were not ordinary little girls. OH NO. For they were both rather mischievous and bouncy.

It was a sunny spring day in the dales of Yorkshire and the two girls were about to go pony trekking. One, a keen horsewoman, the other, not. But she was happy to give anything a go once, as long as she was appropriately padded up.

The two girls mounted their horses. The small ginger one had been polishing the tack for THREE hours that afternoon as she was keen to point out, before the other caused it to be messy or dirty again (she was just that sort of person).

"Ummm.. Rosie, did I tell you I've never ridden a horse before?" asked Nell, nervously.
"Never mind, Hannah says you'll bounce,"came the response.
Nell's face was a picture.
"Hannah says what?"
"Bounce! But I wouldn't worry, she said I would end up stuck in a tree!" Rosie laughed scornfully. As if.

Nell contorted her face into a grimace and carefully copied Rosie in attempting to get on her horse. Eventually she cheated by standing on an upturned bucket, hoping her companion wouldn't notice.

The pair trotted out into a field, stereotypically bordered with dry stone walls as per Last of the Summer Wine standard (this author does not have much imagination!). Rosie quickly urged her pony into a canter, Nell's seemed to have a mind of its own and slowed down to a walk. Rosie circled back behind Nell and shouted a command in Breton, which spurred her pony into action.

"AARRGGHH!!" came the scream from Nell's direction as the pony careered towards another crumbling wall.
"Don't worry, she'll jump it!" Rosie meant to reassure but even her calm words could not quell Nell's (sorry couldn't help it!) fears.

"THUD!" the pony landed and Nell opened her eyes, disbelieveing that she had made it.
"Waahhoo!" yodelled Rosie, plaits akimbo as she flew over the wall. "Watch out there's another!!"

With a terrible groan (this pony groaned ok?) Nell's horse jumped over the wall, sending the girl bouncing into the wall. Miraculously the wall survived but poor unfortunate Nell bounced into a nearby stream.

"Oops!" said Rosie, gloating rather. Sadly she did not notice the rather low hanging branch across her path. (Yes Rosie, there was a tree in this field). "Oof" she exclaimed as she fell into the tree, dangling by one ankle, shorts torn and mud on her face, unable to right herself or help the spluttering Nell.

So Nell, when do you fancy coming riding with me?

(Bah, 3 hours cleaning tack. What kind of swiz is that anyway? I had a small helper but she got bored and went to play with pigeons/rabbits/lambs/ponies/dogs/peacocks.)

And, er, thank you Hannah! :P

Tee Hee - that was funny. I've been on rides almost as disastrous and though it's awful at the time riders all love to tell the tale of their direst moments. Incidentally I had one just last week when my darling horse spooked (at nothing natch) and fell down onto his knees sending me somersaulting right over his head to land most unceremoniously on my head. Had to buy a new riding hat because of that.
