Toothache

#1: Toothache Author: Rachel PostPosted: Wed Apr 13, 2005 10:01 am

She was convinced in her own mind that it was the dripping tap that had awoken her. It dripped with that peculiar intensity that only a solitary tap dripping in the middle of the night can achieve; the type of sound that appears to increase with every droplet, until you wonder how anybody can sleep through such a racket. It was this noise that met her ears when she surfaced from sleep, and she lay there, listening to it in despair. It was only as the hands of the clock crept on that she began to feel a twinge that could only be described as toothache; an ache that filled her whole being with dread and completely took her mind off the sounds emanating from the tap.

By morning, the twinge had developed into a slow steady ache. She managed to choke down enough fruhstuck so as not to arouse suspicion, but if anybody had been paying attention, they would have noticed the unusually bright eyes and the extra wan-ness of face. She struggled through the morning, dreading mittagessen, but knowing there could be no possible excuse for missing the meal. After playing with the food on her plate and hoping nobody had observed just how little she had eaten, she felt a light touch on her shoulder.

“Would you come to my study after mittagessen please?” Miss Annersley was smiling, but her voice was stern.

She made her way towards the study, her foot steps trailing and feeling as though the world was against her. She considered slipping into the dressing up box where she knew the rouge to be kept, but reflected that that had been attempted by others before her and wouldn’t get her out of this predicament.

“How long have you been suffering from toothache?” Miss Annersley was direct in her approach.
“Since last night,” she replied.
“When will you realise that the only thing to do when you have toothache is to visit the dentist? You would save yourself and so many other people such amounts of trouble if you could just face up to things.”
“Yes Miss Annersley,” she muttered.
“Take yourself off to San, get some lotion and I will call the dentist myself to get you an appointment,” Miss Annersley was determined to root out this unreasonable fear all those under the roof of the Chalet School had of the dentist.

She made her way from the study, close to tears but knowing her Head was right. As she shut the door, she missed seeing Miss Annersley smile.

“Dear old Matey,” Miss Annersley said. “One day she will get over this fear of the dentist!”

Rachel, that's fantastic. Perfect to brighten a Wednesday morning!

No wonder everyone's scared of the dentist - Matey has subliminally influenced them!

Thanks Rachel - your drabbles have a very cheery effect.

Must admit I wondered if it was Matey on reading that it was Miss Annersley dealing with the culprit.
