Bruno charged happily along the Platz. He was vaguely aware of something trying to hold him back, but at almost 10 stone Bruno was far stronger than the slight Con Maynard who was trying to hold him back. Further away Len and Margot had given up any attempts to restrain Bruno and let go of the lead, but Con, whose wrist was entangled in the lead was unable to do so.

“Woof!” barked Bruno as he scented a rabbit and turned to chase it, picking up even more speed, eventually pulling poor Con off her feet. There was a loud snap as the lead broke, leaving Con lying on the path watching Bruno charging off into the distance.

Picking herself up Con turned and walked down the path towards her sisters. “That’s the second lead this week,” she said gloomily, “What Mamma is going to say I don’t know.”

“Well, if Mom bothered to take Bruno out instead of leaving it to us, she wouldn’t complain when we come back with a broken lead and no Bruno,” said Margot as she examined the scratches all over her legs and arms.

“Margot!” said Len in shock, “How can you say such things? You know Mamma is busy with her new book, and you know how much knitting that involves, she simply hasn’t the time to exercise Bruno. Oh and don’t call her ‘Mom’, you know how she feels about that.”

“Whatever!” replied Margot, “I refuse to have anything to do with that delinquent dog anymore!” She turned on her heel and stomped back towards Freudesheim.

Len and Con looked at each other, “I think Margot is listening to her devil again,” sighed Len.

Con raised her eyebrows, “Don’t you think she has a point?” she asked in surprise, “Surely you can see that Bruno is a little out of control? That perhaps he needs more exercise?”

“Don’t be silly Con, we just need to be a bit firmer with him, that’s all. Now we had better find him, we are due back at school in an hour.” So the two girls set off in search of Bruno. However their search was interrupted by a high pitched scream of fright.

“Margot!” cried Len and Con together, and they turned and ran back down the path. As they rounded the corner they saw Margot backed up against a wall, being threatened by a huge lion.

“Oh Margot,” said Len, in her best older sister voice, “If only you had come with us, instead of listening to your devil, this would never have happened.” She stepped forwards and tried to swat the lion away from her triplet. The lion looked at her considering and then backhanded her over the nearby cliff.

Con stood there terrified, “Don’t stand there! Do something!” cried Margot, but Con was frozen with shock.

Then, in the distance the two terrified girls heard a pounding noise, followed by heavy panting.

“No,” groaned Margot, “We really don’t need Phil Graves now,”

But it was not Phil. It was…

“Bruno!” cried Con and Margot.

Bruno charged at the lion, and a terrific fight ensued, the lion slashed at Bruno, Bruno bit back, the lion snarled, Bruno growled. The two animals stalked round each other trying to sieze the advantage over the other.

“Growl,”

“Miowww”

“Growl”

“Roar”

Margot and Con grabbed the opportunity to lean over the cliff and reassure Len that Bruno was winning.

“Margot this is all your fault,” snapped Len as she clung precariously to a branch. A loud howl interrupted what was to become the familiar elder sister lecture. Con and Margot spun round to see Bruno deliver a crushing blow to the lion, which shot towards them, they leapt apart as the lion plummeted off the cliff, inadvertently knocking Len off her precarious perch and squashing her beneath him as he fell.

Margot and Con rushed to Bruno, who had collapsed bleeding to the floor.

“Oh Bruno” wailed Margot, “You saved my life, please don’t die!”

But the light was fading from Bruno’s eyes, his tail gave one last mighty thump and lay still.

“Bruno!” Joey Maynard was running towards her remaining triplets, “What happened?”

“There was a lion… Bruno… fought… saved me… Len…over the cliff,”

“Oh Bruno!” cried Joey, neglecting to notice the unfortunate and tragic death of her eldest child, “Well, I lost Rufus, and I have nothing to remember him by, this will not happen with Bruno!” She ripped off her lime green dress, revealing her Chalet School uniform beneath, she ripped this off also, “As well as a Chalet Girl, I was a Girl Guide,” as she revealed her Girl Guides uniform beneath that. She pulled out a pen knife and bent over Bruno’s lifeless body…

If you want to know what happened next read “Joey’s Nose”, I don’t think it has been archived yet.
