#1: The one who got away Author: LizB, Location: Oxon, EnglandPosted: Thu Aug 25, 2005 8:53 am In later years he would wonder how he did it. All the data said he didn’t have a chance. Having a sister at the school increased the danger of course – Gottfried Mensch, Jack Maynard – they were among the first to have succumbed. The danger had spread in later years of course, as following the example of their founder, the hunters had not remained at the school, waiting, but had travelled, looking for other opportunities to ensnare their prey.
Water appeared to be a significant factor in increasing the risk of being caught – boat journeys, lakes, even a lily pond had proved to be dangerous locations. Some said that the school’s original site, by a lake, and one of its later locations, on an island, had been selected so that the power of the water could be harnessed – it was certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.
It was not even that he had taken great lengths to avoid it. He had not possessed the charms and amulets that had become available in later years, although they had not been proved to give any protection; he had not travelled to the other side of the earth to avoid it (that was later shown to be an unsuccessful ploy anyway); his immune system did not appear to differ from anybody else’s, but despite this, and despite the sister-factor, he had been there and had come away unscathed.
It was a story that had become legend; that was told in hushed voices in medical schools around the world; told with awe by some and with envy by the others. Even in the school’s records the anomaly had merited a mention, although little was made of it. However after careful perusal of the manuscripts one will find the words:
Miss Stewart would stay in the sanatorium at St Clare’s with Nurse. They hoped she would be well enough to travel by Thursday of next week, when a doctor brother was coming to take her to her home in distant Hertfordshire.
Even now the thought of the danger he had been in and the narrow escape was something to shiver over and marvel at.
