Post subject:  The Tryst - complete

I must apologise, comedy writing is not my strong point, but a little bunny bit. I must also apologise for not only going against EBD's timeline, but that of one of my own drabbles. I couldn't help revisiting the pairing again

There was a slight rustling in the bushes and then two faces appeared, flushed and streaked with mud but otherwise normal. Seeing that they were still alone and unobserved, Len threw her arms around Reg and kissed him rapturously, eyes shining. Her hair was tousled and her clothes askew, her jumper discarded somewhere in the undergrowth (they would have to come back tomorrow and find it, Reg’s shirt was with it).

“Thankyou,” she squealed, surveying the blank front of the house delightedly. “It was a wonderful idea!”

Len was on holiday for the summer, and Reg had suggested getting away; a few minutes previously they had arrived at Many Bushes, the family house which was rarely in use now. It had been late one night, when Reg was musing on how they could best escape the Platz and the pressures there to behave well, that he had stumbled across the place. He remembered it from when Joey had first come to stay, and as it was deserted for most of the year they could be alone here, as long as they could avoid the piercing eyes of the nosy woman who had moved in when Phoebe sold her house.

“Shall we go in?” he breathed, eyes still wide at his previous experience. He could safely report back to Jack and Joey that the garden, at least, was still in good shape. His suggestion had been received enthusiastically, though, and before he could start to recover himself he found himself being tugged up and dragged along the drive to the front door.

The key grated slightly in the lock when Len inserted and turned it, but she paid no attention to that. With an excited bounce she flung open the front door and turned around to kiss Reg again. He swung her into his powerful arms, showering her neck with kisses as he carried her over the threshold. But before he could suggest that they go and find the bedroom, there was a discreet cough behind them. Swinging around, he nearly dropped Len in shock.

In the doorway stood a tall, dark young man, hair cropped and an uncannily familiar air to Reg’s overall boss, Sir James Russell, about him. With a large thud and a gasp, Len dropped out of his arms, then stood and stared again at this stranger in the house.

“David,” she choked out at last. Then, trying desperately to comb her hair into some sort of order, she turned to Reg, who was bright red and hiding his naked torso as best he could behind her. Thankfully, she had been well trained since an early age, and her manners jumped to the fore as she began to collect herself. “David, this is my fiancée Reg. Um. Reg, this is my cousin, David. What – what are you-“

“Doing here? I came last week with Rix and a couple of, um, guests. We thought we’d have the house to ourselves for a while. Why are you here?”

“We wanted a holiday,” Len stammered, moving closer to Reg as she saw David staring in shock at his chest. “We were going to get away…” She tailed off, then added suddenly, “Mama didn’t tell us you’d be here.”

“We didn’t exactly tell anyone,” confessed a quiet voice behind David, and suddenly another young man appeared, also dark, though his hair curled rampantly over his head and even touched his shoulders. He stared for a moment and then whistled. “You’ve grown since I last saw you. And did I hear you say this is the prodigal fiancée? Nice to meet you! I’m Rix Bettany.”

He extended his hand, and grinned when he saw Reg’s predicament. He seemed to recall being in a similar situation himself one evening when he’d been trying to sneak back into the college grounds with a young lady.

“Would you like to borrow a t-shirt?” he offered casually, making Reg flush once again.

“I think I’ll start taking the luggage upstairs,” he muttered, slinking back to the car they’d come in to pull out the suitcases, fish out some clothes and then go and try and find the bedroom like he’d originally planned. Len, having regained her composure a little, eyed her two cousins speculatively. They hadn’t had very much to do with each other, being stuck in Switzerland for the past few years, and she wondered what they would think of her. Before she could get any further into the horrific things they were going to say about her, though, a honeyed voice from the living room called,

“Who is it, baby?”

“No-one,” said David hastily. He disappeared to go and find the speaker even as another familiar face appeared in the doorway. Len, having had her feet taken out from under her completely, just stared in shock for a moment until Rix told her she was going to start swallowing flies if she stayed like that much longer.

“Sybil,” she gasped. “What-“

“She’s staying with a college friend,” said Rix evenly. “We just failed to mention that would be happening here. But if nobody finds that out, nobody needs to find out just how you and Reg, er, made your entrance.”

Rather hurriedly, Len agreed.

That evening, Con sat alone in her room, admiring the sunset, all of the dusky colours and trying to find the right words to express just how delightful it could be. Her pen poised over the paper, the last three lines of her poem suddenly coming.

They were interrupted by a floorboard just above her squeaking gratingly.

With a sigh, she went to the corner and fetched the broomstick leaning there. She’d only come for a bit of peace and quiet.
