A first little effort - an idea about an event that contributed to Grizel’s heavy punishment after Vaselining the blackboards in School at. “Go to your room,” said Miss Bettany quietly, “and wait there till I come to you. I am ashamed to think a girl I had counted as a Senior should cause so much trouble by her childishness and impertinence. Go at once!” Grizel went. Only a faint flush of colour on Madge’s delicate cheekbones revealed how upset she was. With a stiff nod to Mademoiselle, she swept from the room and began to walk briskly along the corridor in Grizel’s footsteps. She suddenly glanced down at her hand and hissed in irritation. “Blast it!” she muttered to herself. The whole of her right palm was covered in sticky Vaseline. She waved it ineffectually around then tried to reach for her pocket handkerchief but it was in her right hand pocket. Violent contortions to retrieve it with her left hand only resulted in her blouse becoming untucked and the straining of her neck, which had been stiff since the night spent on the Barenbad alm. Further irritated by the sharp pain, she slipped into the nearest Splashery to wash, only to find it occupied by Amy Stevens, who was rather weepily scrubbing at inky fingers. Madge hurried out again unseen and continued on her way, still holding her right hand as if it were a giant greasy spider that wanted to pounce and with her left shoulder tucked ungracefully up by her left ear. What could she do? Grizel was waiting in her room and she must deal with her at once. To return to her own bedroom would take more than a few minutes and, with Grizel in her present mood, anything could happen in that time. With a final grunt of disgust, Madge wiped her sticky hand down the side of her skirt, ruining the beautiful gentian blue tweed for good. Now she was really angry. She squared her shoulders and opened Grizel’s door. “Punished Grizel was going to be, and nothing could save her.” |
